WELCOME TO THE LAKES AREA! We trust that your time here, whether just visiting, vacationing or a life long resident, is an enjoyable one. Berean Baptist is a local, independent, congregation of like-minded Bible believers.

SCRIPTURAL POSITION The Word of God is the only inspired revelation from the Lord to man. Jesus Christ is the only Son of God, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died an atoning death for the sins of all men, ascended to heaven, and will come again for His own. Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life. Salvation is in faith in Christ alone, not the church and/or it’s ordinances. There is a coming return of Christ and judgment of the world. “Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12

WORSHIP Our worship services follow the direction given in I Timothy 4 to be diligent to

the reading of God’s Word, exhortation in God’s Word and teaching of the doctrines of God’s Word.

SUNDAY SCHOOL Berean keeps a year round schedule of Bible classes for all ages from adults to preschool and also a staffed nursery. Each class is geared toward learning more of Christ and His Word.

SUNDAY EVENING Berean has a Sunday evening service year round. The last Sunday evening of the month is “fellowship” night with a “kettle blessing” following the evening service. You are encouraged to come!

TRUTH TRACKERS Every Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm is a time for children ages 5 to 12 to learn more of the Lord and His Word including crafts, music and games.

BEREAN BAPTIST BIBLE INSTITUTE Our satellite Bible Institute is now enrolling for the fall of 2016.

Christian Fellowship Church was founded in 1968 as a place where Christians from all denominational backgrounds could join together in worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ in a family atmosphere. Meetings tend to be informal, using a blend of contemporary and traditional music, and teaching focusing on the full Word of God and its application to life. We Believe: 1. The Bible to be the inspired and infallible authoritative Word of God. 2. There is one God, eternally manifested in the persons of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. 3. In the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, in His vicarious and atoning sacrifice through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension, and in His personal return in power and glory upon earth.

5. The gospel includes holiness of heart and life, healing of the body, and a personal experience with the Holy Spirit, whereby the gifts of the Spirit become active in the life of the believer. 6. A life awareness of the presence of God’s kingdom here on earth today, and faith in the complete restoration of the kingdom of God upon the earth. 7. In the bodily resurrection of believers at the end of time: the just unto eternal life, and the unjust into eternal damnation. 8. In the spiritual unity of all believers in our Lord Jesus Christ. Visitors are welcome at all meetings. Even if you are not currently involved with another local congregation, please come, and enjoy some Christian Fellowship!

4. Regeneration and conversion through faith in Jesus Christ is absolutely essential for the salvation of lost and sinful humanity.

(218) 473-3111 Pastor Anna M. Larson WORSHIP: 10:00 a.m. SUNDAY SCHOOL: 10:15 a.m. - September thru May

“Come and see what God is doing!” Circles of Faith is a congregation of the United Church of Christ, a Protestant denomination formed in 1957 through the merger of the Congregational Christian Church and Evangelical & Reformed denominations. The UCC is a welcoming, justiceminded Christian community: - We are a people of the continuing testament. God is continually revealed: in the Bible, in stories throughout the ages, and in our stories and our faith-in-action. - We are a people of extravagant welcome, extending hospitality as a sign of God’s inclusive love. We are the ones who affirm, No matter who you are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here! - We believe the church’s mission is to change lives – individually, globally, systemically. To do this, churches need to be places of vitality in worship, learning, and advocacy. We work to make transformation possible, yet trust in God’s grace. We’re not a perfect church, but we do try to live faith-

CHURCHES OF THE LAKES 2016

fully. We cannot do it all, so God’s work is done in cooperation and collaboration with folks of other faiths. One place of vitality at Circles of Faith UCC is worship together at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday mornings. During the school year, children begin in worship and then leave for learning in Sunday school while adults sing, pray, and learn in the service. On many Sundays, there is hearty fellowship for all following worship! Another place of vitality at Circles of Faith is special opportunities of study throughout the church year for folks of all ages. And we reach out around the globe and locally to embody God’s transformational love. We do this in deed and indeed through our offerings and through special service projects. “Come and see what God is doing at Circles of Faith UCC!” Come back again! And if you don’t have a faith home, we hope you’ll consider Circles of Faith UCC, where God is still speaking.

That we tend to remember misdeeds years (and sometimes even decades) after the original offense says something important about us. That is, we are deeply imbued with a sense of morality, and when we have committed a serious offense, especially one which hurts another person, we may have trouble getting over the shame and humiliation, even long after the other person has forgiven us. But what good is holding onto all of that shame and humiliation? We may never forget the wrong committed, and the other person probably won’t either, if it was something serious, “But if we walk in the but we should try to find it withlight, in ourselves to forgive ourselves. as he is in the Jesus died for all of our sins, even light, we have the ones we can’t seem to forgive fellowship ourselves for, and not forgiving with one another, and ourselves is tantamount to not the blood of trusting that God has forgiven Jesus, his Son, us. An Open and Affirming Congregation We believe we are called by God to worship, to educate and to serve. As we live out our mission, we seek to unite individuals in worship, to nurture the development of individual and community faith, and to encourage service to others. In these and many other ways, we seek God’s vision for our future while attempting to honor our heritage of more than 140 years of faithful ministry. This congregation is a diverse gathering of people. We strive to adhere to the essential truths of the historic Christian faith while at the same time recognizing that God is still speaking. We also recognize that faith is personal in nature, thus we endeavor to remain open to God’s moving, growing Spirit in our midst. Therefore, we respect individuals as they faithfully raise questions and grow spiritually. For this reason, people of various reli-

gious, social and personal backgrounds are welcome in the life of this congregation. We celebrate being part of the United Church of Christ, and the local church autonomy that is ours. We elect our leaders and call our own minister. All decision making processes rest in the membership of this congregation. We believe this enables us to be acutely responsive to the moving of God’s Spirit around us and within us. We believe that, by God’s Grace, we have lived this faithfully since 1872, and by God’s enduring Grace, we continue to do so. For this we are truly grateful.

OUR MISSION: Inspire the World with the Inclusive Love of Jesus.

WELCOME TO FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH PAGE: Our goal at First Baptist is to proclaim the Word of God in a relevent uncompromising Christ-centered manner so as to help believers grow in their faith and to lead unbelievers to a knowledge of the saving power of Jesus Christ.

WHAT WE BELIEVE: Purpose: A phrase that well represents our purpose is “Great Commandment PassionGreat Commission Focus.” Our vision is to work together with a great commandment passion (Loving God – Deut. 6:5;Luke 10:27) to fullfill the great commission (Making Disciples – Matt. 28:19,20). We want to develop biblical churches that are spiritually alive, culturally relevant, unified in spirit, mobilized for ministry, expressing compassion for the whole person, sensitive to the needs of all people, and aggressive in evangelism and church planting throughout the world. Ultimately, here at First Baptist, we want to be a church that is producing mature, healthy followers of Jesus Christ. We invite you to come worship and grow with us! Affiliation: We at First Baptist Church of

Detroit Lakes are a part of a national association of churches called the Conservative Baptist association of America, or CB America. Our regional (geographic) fellowship is called the North Central Conservative Baptist Association or NCCBA. It includes the states of North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. Doctrinal Statement: We believe in the accuracy and authority of the word of God (the 66 books of the bible) for all matters of faith and practice. We believe in the one true God who eternally exists in three distinct persons; the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe all people are sinners by nature and by choice. We believe that God offers forgiveness and salvation to anyone who turns to Christ believing in His substitutionary death on the cross, His burial, and His bodily resurrection. We believe that baptism by immersion is an act of obedience that follows salvation. We believe that Jesus Christ will come again to first take up (rapture) His people. He will also judge and rule on the earth. In His time He will create a new heaven and new earth.

* Communion is the 1st and 2nd Sundays of the month

You’re invited to join us at First Lutheran Church in Audubon! If you’re just visiting the area or live around here, you are welcome to join us. At our Sunday worship, we hear the surprising Good News of God in Jesus the Messiah: “while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” God never waits for us to clean up our act before reaching out to us in love. Jesus came “not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” You can worship among people who care about each other and about you, in a judgment-free zone. We sometimes joke that if the preacher doesn’t show up, we can probably muddle through, but if the organist isn’t here, we’re sunk! All joking aside, the preaching doesn’t focus on telling people how to live. Instead, we hear where the Bible meets us in the reality of our life today here and now, as the Spirit of God is alive and well and at work in whatever’s happening in our lives, good, bad, or ugly. And the lively music will leave the gospel tapping in your toes all week! Our congregation is full of sinners and saints, who are focused on being God’s mission to our little corner of the

CHURCHES OF THE LAKES 2016

world. We feel a special calling to the young people in our community, and offer a Wednesday after-school program for elementary-aged kids during the school year. In this “On God’s Wings” program, we get to spend time with the kiddos, sharing stories from the Bible, singing, doing activities, and hosting a meal each week for the children and their families. We have women’s and men’s groups that gather for fellowship and Bible study, a joy-filled group of quilters who meet together weekly, and a group of youth engaged in being the church. Our people see beyond the walls of the church building, knowing that the Word of God is not simply a story to learn, but a message of forgiveness and salvation that transforms us daily, brings new life, and sends us out into God’s world to share this good news, in word and in deed. Whether you can only drop by a time or two, or are looking for a church family, you are invited to join us. Pastor John E. Merseth Sr. SUMMER WORSHIP: 10:00 a.m. SEPTEMBER THROUGH MAY Sunday School & Bible Study 9:30 a.m. Worship 10:30 a.m. (Our worship service can be seen on you tube under Immanuel Lutheran Audubon MN)

Dear Reader: Immanuel Lutheran Church is a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod with its main office in Mankato MN. There we have a member owned College: Bethany Lutheran College, and Bethany Lutheran Theology Seminary. We live in a sinful world where much is taught and believed that is contraire to God’s Word. So what is different about Immanuel Lutheran Church and the ELS synod? We still teach the true Word of God from the Bible, administer the sacraments rightly, and follow what God says, not the opinions and thoughts of man. The Holy Scriptures are without error in everything, and are true and reliable. As it says in 2 Timothy 3:16, “All scripture is Godbreathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting, and training in righteousness.”

God still loves you and me. He sent His only Son into the world to save sinners, to be our Savior. He lived the perfect life and died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. By faith in Christ we now have forgiveness of all our sins and have the sure hope of heaven when we leave this world. If these important thoughts make you think about God’s Word and His Church come and join us, we would love to have you. We also have Sunday School and Bible classes, confirmation, youth group, and choir. May God bless your Day!! Pastor John Merseth

If we look into our own hearts we soon see that each of us is guilty of sins against God in thought, word, and deed. You see Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned, and fall short of the glory of God.” But thanks be to God there is good news!

WHAT WE BELIEVE

The women’s ministries have always been active in the church and continues to be so. In the past, the WMS has made bandages and sent supplies to Tandala Hospital in the Congo, encouraged and supported the wives of the missionaries that we support as a Church, and they have been making walker bags and lap blankets for the residents of our local nursing homes. They meet the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 9:00 a.m.

We believe the Bible, both the Old and New Testaments to be the inspired word of God and the only true and infallible guide for faith, doctrine, and life. We are members of the Evangelical Free Church of America. For a complete statement of faith, you can go to our website at www.lakeeuniceefchurch.org

During its 123 years of existence, Lake Eunice Evangelical Free Church, the Bible has been faithfully taught in all its truth and fullness to the glory of God. The purpose of this church is to spread the gospel both here and overseas and to instruct young and old alike in the truth of the word of God. Our goal is to raise up mature and faithful believers in Jesus Christ.

You will find the people at Lake Eunice to be warm and friendly and very welcoming of visitors. You are only a stranger until you walk in the door at Lake Eunice! You will find Lake Eunice to be a growing and active congregation with lots of opportunities to become involved.

Things we don’t know There is very little that we know with certainty. We often think we know why others do what they do, but when we reflect honestly about how unsure we often are of our own motives, it should be obvious that we don’t really know the motives of others. Lund Church is located just a dozen minutes (9 miles) north of Detroit Lakes on County Highway 21 (Richwood Road). Our building is air-conditioned and wheel chair accessible. Come to the country and be refreshed by the fellowship of a friendly congregation with a big heart. Our worship style is traditional. Our emphasis is simple: reading, preaching, teaching and living what the Bible says. Our mission is “To joyfully share God’s Love through worship, fellowship, and service while living in God’s grace.”

The congregation has a rich heritage celebrating our 130th year of ministry. We honor God’s will for us revealed through the Scriptures. In our desire to remain faithful to the redemptive power and transformational truth of God’s word, the congregation joined with the vibrant association of Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC), committed to the core belief that the canonical Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments are the inspired Word of God and the sole authoritative source and norm of our proclamation, faith and life.

We try to follow faithfully God’s Commandments and the Church’s teaching in our worship and in our daily lives. Most Holy Redeemer Church was built in Ogema in 1914 with Father Hugo Fell, O.S.B. as the pastor. Stones for the foundation were hauled gratis by farmers coming to town. Several other Benedictine priests

followed. In 1973, during the pastorship of Father Blaise Berres, O.S.B. a new church was built. The church hall with classrooms and an office were added in 1993. Since 1994 the parish has been faithfully served by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. We are a welcoming community and encourage people to visit.

Gifts

of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit serves as a guide and helper to all. What gifts does the Holy Spirit bring? Various theologians describe them as such.

Wisdom: This is a person’s ability to value spiritual things over worldly possessions. It helps one desire items that bring people closer to God.

Understanding: A gift of comprehension, understanding is the ability to ab-

sorb the meanings and teachings of the Church. This gift also helps people to be more tolerant of and sympathetic toward others. Having understanding means being able to recognize when others need compassion or assistance.

Right Judgement/Council: A person who has received this gift knows

the difference between right and wrong. This is essential for avoiding sin and leading a life that mirrors that of Christ. The gift of council also inspires people to encourage others to do what is right.

Courage: Being faithful requires courage, especially when

a person’s beliefs may not be accepted, and may even be feared, by others. Courage allows one to stand up and defend his or her faith and be firm in decisions as they pertain to religion.

Knowledge: The gift of knowledge guides a person on the path that will lead to God. Knowledge assists as the faithful look to avoid any obstacles that would derail their efforts.

Reverence: Also known as piety, this gift is confidence and obedience in God. It also makes a person want to serve God and others. Reverence fosters a greater respect for the Church and its teachings.

Wonder and Awe: This gift makes the magnificence of God that much more apparent. A portion of this gift is fear; not a fear in God, but a fear of offending him through sin.

We all know that work can sometimes be mind-numbingly boring, difficult to the point of frustration, and stifling to the soul. But, it can also Work hard be exciting, provide a sense of accomand cheerfully plishment, and allow us to serve God by at whatever serving our fellow man. So, how do we you do, as ensure that we have more of the latter though you and less of the former? There is considwere working erable evidence that what makes workers for the Lord happy is a sense of agency, the sense that rather than they are effective at what they are doing for people. and that it is worthwhile work. What this really boils down to is doing something that you are good at. So, if you’re in a job Colossians or career that you don’t feel particularly 3:23 suited to, you’re probably not feeling great about your work. In that case, you should probably either retrain for a different job or work on the skills that will make you more effective in your current job. God has given all of us specific talents, and if we can incorporate those into our work we are bound to be happier and more effective. But, even if you aren’t particularly good at what you do or happy where you work, do your best to put on a happy face each day at work. Sometimes happiness at work, like happiness in life, is just a choice that we make. - Christopher Simon

We try to faithfully follow God’s Commandments and the Church’s teaching in our worship and in our daily lives. St. Benedict’s Church was built in White Earth in 1939, replacing the church that was at the Mission site built in 1881. Father Justin Luetmer, O.S.B. was the pastor at that time and the church was built with the help of a donation from his

mother who was a widow. The objective was to provide a more convenient location for the Indian parishioners to worship. The same church is still being used today. St. Benedict was served by Benedictine priests until 1983. Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate currently serve the parish today. We are a welcoming community and encourage people to visit.

Prayer

Five Types of

There is no limit to the kinds of prayer which are possible, since prayer is any genuine attempt to communicate with God, but there are five types of prayer which seem to be virtually universal.

Thanks: The first type of prayer is the prayer of thanks. Many of the faithful start and end each day by thanking God, and there is always something to be thankful for, including our very existence.

Confession or Contrition: A third type of prayer is the prayer of petition, the prayer which asks for God’s help. These prayers are sometimes thought unnecessary, since God presumably knows better than we do what we need, but it certainly feels right to ask God for help.

Petition: A person who has received this gift knows the difference between right and wrong. This is essential for avoiding sin and leading a life that mirrors that of Christ. The gift of council also inspires people to encourage others to do what is right.

Praise: A fourth prayer is the prayer of praise, where we extol or exalt God, typically for his goodness, power, or wisdom.

Meditative Prayer: The last type of prayer, which is often overlooked because it is more akin to meditation than to prayer, is when we simply feel ourselves in the presence of God who cares for and about us. The sense that there is a Supreme Being who is not indifferent to our suffering should become a way of being in the world, and something which we should strive for constantly. CHURCHES OF THE LAKES 2016

Seventh-day Adventist church is a Protestant Christian church that believes very strongly in the shed blood of Jesus Christ. We believe Jesus lived, died and rose again that we might have eternal life if we accept that sacrifice that He has made for us. God loved us so much that He gave us His only begotten Son that we might have eternal life. Because of that great love for us, we as Seventh-day Adventists have a desire to take the gospel to the whole world and let others know how they too can experience that love and have eternal life. The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to proclaim to all people the everlasting gospel in the context of the three Angels’ messages found in Revelation 14:6-12. Seventh-day Adventist churches literally circle the globe. Of the 238 recognized countries by the United Nations we have a presence in 216 of those countries. We have a network around the world of churches, hospitals, clinics, universities, colleges, and schools from pre-k through high school. The Seventh-day Adventist church was officially organized in 1863 and is recognized as the fastest growing Protestant church in the world today. Having grown from 5 million members in 1985 we now exceed 19 million members. As a local church we belong to the ministeri-

al alliance and work closely with other churches and organizations in helping our community. We have a Community Service Center with a Thrift store next to the church at 404 Richwood Road. The thrift center funds are used to provide life style seminars such as Stress relief, total lifestyle management in our “CREATION” Seminar, Money Management, Family Life, etc. This center works through the Department of Human Services and other agencies in the area to provide assistance to those in need with clothing and household items. Another ministry that we have locally is the Adventist Christian School that provides Christian education for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. The school has been operating since 1915 and is open to anyone that would like to send their children. The school engages the students in various classroom and outdoor activities, which function as an integral part of the overall preparation of the student for a life of service for God and their community. We want to invite each of you to come and experience for yourself our Church, School, and Community Service Center. We are open for all people and would love to have you come and worship with us. If you have further questions please feel free to contact us through the different media outlets listed above. Pastor Fred Crowell

Holy Spirit

The

Misconceptions abound concerning The Holy Spirit. Unlike the Father and Son, who are visualized more easily thanks to the physical attributes ascribed to them by historians and writers, The Holy Spirit tends to be more difficult for even the most ardent faithful to understand. It’s easy to think of the Holy Spirit as a mythical force or something completely intanCHURCHES OF THE LAKES 2016

gible. However, the Bible states quite simply that the Holy Spirit is a divine person with a mind and emotions. The Holy Spirit is a person just in the essence of God the Father and Jesus Christ. John 15:26 says the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and is fully God. He is eternal, omniscient and omnipresent, has a will, and can speak. He is alive. The Holy Spirit is equal

in all ways to God the Father and God the Son. When one prays, he or she also should speak to the Holy Spirit and ask for guidance. The Holy Spirit is instrumental in telling people’s hearts about the truth of Jesus and serves as a teacher and mentor. The Holy Spirit provides the spiritual hug that many people desire and can keep followers on the right path. PAGE 41

Rev. Tim Cook WORSHIP: Sundays at 10:45 A.M.

CHURCHES OF THE LAKES 2016

Please join us each Sunday this summer to hear The Lord’s Word, to listen to wonderful music from talented musicians and to enjoy refreshments. The Hattie Goodman Chapel, known as “Shoreham Chapel,” located in Shoreham Village, at the intersection of County Road 22 and North Melissa Drive, between Lakes Melissa and Sallie, began their services June 5, 2016, and will continue through September 4, 2016. Sunday Service begins at 10:45 AM. The Shoreham Chapel is nondenominational and open to all. This Chapel has occupied a special place in the hearts of Minnesota lake country vacationers and residents since the turn of the century. In 1902 the chapel was built by Fredrick Goodman in memory of his wife Hattie. In those years pastoral duties were shared by several ministers until Rev. Gary Danielson started officiating in 1960, and then retired in 2006. On October 14, 2008, Pastor Danielson went on to see His Lord. Pastor Tim Cook is now the chapel’s inspirational leader, known for choosing a theme each summer. The chapel has indoor plumbing along with an area for gathering which includes

the following: a handicap ramp for entering the chapel, a complete kitchen and a bathroom. The chapel is also available to rent for weddings, funerals, baptisms, etc... For more information, please call Bill Schuett at 612-396-3021 or Jean Rolle at 218-847-7138 If you are in the area on a summer Sunday, we invite you to come and worship with us!

CHURCHES OF THE LAKES 2016

For 131 years Zion Lutheran has based its beliefs on three basic principles: Scripture, faith and grace. The scripture is the only source of knowledge about God and His will for us. Grace tells us that as human beings, we cannot earn God’s love, forgiveness, or everlasting life. IT IS A GIFT OF HIS LOVE. Only by faith in Jesus Christ do we receive forgiveness. Through faith in Him we come into a relationship of peace with God. Word and sacrament are the means of grace for our forgiveness and salvation.

MINISTRIES

Our worship service consists of confession, hymns of praise and thanksgiving, scripture readings, prayer, and fellowship. Other everyday ministries designed to help us grow in faith and reach a personal relationship with God are available.

• Outreach: Visitation, Hospitality, Prayer, Publicity and Caring Hearts Ministry • Womens Groups: Womens’ Missionary League, Guilds, Bible Study, Altar Guild, Quilters, Office Helpers • Social Needs: Various groups such as Elders, Stewardship, Men’s groups, Youth, Music, offer opportunities to serve others or to be served in time of need. Many opportunities and spiritual blessings await you at Zion! We welcome all who wish to participate in our worship services and other ministries.

• Education: Bible study for all ages, Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Confirmation Classes, and Library resources
