Water Carnival FRIDAY, JULY 8 - SUNDAY, JULY 17, 2016

Meet the 2016 Admirals Anna Schumacher

aschumacher@dlnewspapers.com

The Northwest Water Carnival in Detroit Lakes will be celebrating its 81st year this July, and admirals Chris and Alyson Larson are confident that it will be a blast. With the help of their fellow Jaycees, they’re bringing back favorite carnival activities and planning new events for the ten day long celebration of the community.

Meet the Larsons

Detroit Lakes couple Chris and Alyson Larson have been married for eight years. They moved to the area in 2011 when Alyson took over the position of pharmacy manager at CVS Pharmacy in Detroit Lakes. Chris Larson works as a crane operator and instructor for the

North Dakota National Guard in Fargo. Three years ago, they decided to join the Jaycees to get more involved in the community. “We were looking for a way to meet people of our own age when we moved into town, and it was recommended by a neighbor that we should check out the Jaycees,” Alyson Larson said. “It’s been a great way for us to meet people, meet the community, meet the businesses.” “We’ve had a great time. We went from having a lot of free time to not so much, ” added her husband, Chris. As admirals, the Larsons are responsible for organizing events, booking entertainment and finding venues for the various happenings during the carnival. Other mem-

bers of the Jaycees are appointed as chairpersons for specific events, while the Larsons are in the background offering support for anyone who requires it. During the Carnival, the Larsons will be present for almost all the events. “Once it starts, we’re there to make sure it continues to run smoothly. Event chairs are named for each specific event. We’re right there to back them up if there’s anything they need,” explained Alyson.

Why they were chosen

Every year at the closing of the Northwest Water Carnival, usually right after the big parade, the current Jaycee president selects the next year’s admiral or admirals. “It’s a big honor to be asked, so we were very excited when they asked us” said Alyson Larson about the couple’s appointment to the position. The Jaycees, when they chose the Larsons, must have taken into account their obvious ability to work together as a couple. Being in charge of the water Carnival appears to have been a fun and time consuming undertaking for the pair. Chris admits that it has been a busy year but also that they’ve had plenty of help. “Everyday it gets a little more busy,” he said. “We have a lot of good help and a lot of good people. Everybody takes their piece of the puzzle; it’s not all just us.” Alyson, too, has noticed that the Carnival has become a very big part of their lives. “I don’t know what we’ll talk about as a married couple when Water Carnival is over,” she joked.

Chris and Alyson Larson were chosen as co-admirals for the 81st Annual Northwest Water Carnival, which opens this Friday, July 8 and continues through Sunday. July 17.

Keep the old, bring in the new

In addition to the usual Water Carnival events, Chris Larson has come up with a new way to begin the Carnival: a Kickoff Party. The free party will be held in the Lakeside parking lot at 7 p.m. on June 8. It will feature live music by area musicians and promises to be great fun. Leighton broadcasting will also be holding a Wefest ticket qualifier during the party. On that same morning, the Larsons will be up bright and

early for the 5 a.m. “Kegs and Eggs” event with the hosts of KFAN Power Trip Morning Show. It’s a sports-centered talk show based out of Minneapolis that will feature an interview with a Minnesota sports icon. Saturday, June 9 also holds lots of fun activities for participants. The morning will be oriented around fitness activities including paddle board races, Maniacs in the Sand, and Beast on the Beach, a strongman competition open to all. A admirals to page 6 

Water Carnival parade back on route by Kaysey Price

Parade to page 14 

After being forced to alter the usual route in 2015, due to a major road reconstruction project on Washington Avenue, the Parade of the Northwest will be back on track once again this year, with kids and parade participants alike doing their best to put the “water” into the Water Carnival by shooting water guns at each other. At right, Detroit Lakes Police Sgt. Robert Strand takes aim at the DL Jaycees Trolley, which has been a staple of the water carnival parade for several years. The parade route will begin at the The Center (formerly the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center), then move down Summit Avenue over to Willow Street and then south on Washington Avenue toward West Lake Drive, ending near Zorbaz.

Every year the Water Carnival’s Parade of the Northwest floats by, supporting Detroit Lakes area businesses and handing out candy to kids. This year will be no different — except for the new surprise entry according to Katie Palmer, co-chair parade coordinator. “We’re very excited about it,” she teased, keeping mum about any details. This year’s parade also boasts more business floats, which means more hands to dole out candy to the youngsters. “We do have a lot of local businesses this year,” Palmer said. There will be mobile exhibits, Palmer confirmed, reminding kids and parents to only grab candy that lands near them and not to run into the street. There will also be water guns to cool off parade-goers in the hot afternoon heat as the parade marches down Washington Avenue on Sunday, July 19. Last year’s parade was a little chaotic with Washington being under construction, but this year it’s back to the same route as before with the action starting at The Center, then moving down Summit Avenue, over to Willow Street and onto Washington Avenue, where it will end just past Zorbaz. “Last year we had about 126 entries. This year we’re hoping to have just as many back. We’ve had a couple new ones add. I haven’t had anybody tell us that they’re not returning, so expect a parade at least as big as last year’s,” Water Carnival Admiral Aly Larson said. Some of the classic acts returning this year are the Kracker Jack Drum-

Bash on the Beach Craig Morgan returns to DL to headline water carnival’s biggest event BY VICKI GERDES

vgerdes@dlnewspapers.com

Music is a big part of the Northwest Water Carnival, as evidenced by the fact that its biggest event, the Bash on the Beach, has featured legendary headliners like Sawyer Brown, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Blackhawk and John Michael Montgomery. This year’s Bash, set to take place Saturday, July 16th, will feature another iconic country music chart-topper: Craig

Morgan. “Chris (Larson) and I are big fans of country music,” says Aly Larson, who along with her husband, is serving as co-admiral of the 81st Northwest Water Carnival. “Craig Morgan has a list of hits behind him as well as a new album, just released this month! “His show will be full of songs we all know, like ‘Redneck Yacht Club,’ ‘That’s What I Love About Sunday,’ ‘International Harvester,’ ‘This Ol’ Boy and likely some new music off

his current album,” she added. Another reason why Morgan was attractive to them, she added, is that Morgan is a U.S. Army veteran. “He (Morgan) is a big supporter of military and first responders,” Larson said. “This struck a chord with us, as Chris is in the military and was able to attend USO concerts while deployed overseas. Craig Morgan has done multiple USO tours, giving troops a taste of home while they are away from their families.”

Craig Morgan (at left) will be the headliner for the 2016 Bash on the Beach. He is set to take the stage at around 9:30 p.m. Last year’s Bash concluded with a little fireworks display (below).

Morgan, who is currently on tour promoting his recently released album, “A Whole Lot More to Me,” and its first single, “I’ll Be Home Soon,” last appeared in Detroit Lakes in 2009, when he made his WE Fest debut (he also performed at Shooting Star Casino early that same year). Visit his website at www.craigmorgan.com for more information on the man and his music. Bash on the Beach favorites Tim “Off Duty” Eggebraaten, a northwestern one-man-band — who serves as Detroit Lakes’ police chief when he’s not performing — and Troubadour, a Fargo-based country band, are scheduled to open the concert. Eggebraaten will perform at 6:30 p.m., followed by Troubadour. Morgan is set to take the stage at approximately 9:30 p.m., says Larson. “Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce (700 Summit Ave.) or on

Also performing as part of the July 16 Bash on the Beach concert will be (clockwise from upper left) country music band Troubador from Fargo and Detroit Lakes singer, songwriter and musician Tim “Off Duty” Eggebraaten, who will also perform at the DL City Park during Family Day festivities on Sunday, July 10.

All seats are general admission. “Some people do bring chairs; however, the majority of the crowd stands,” Larson said. Food vendors will be available outside the gate, and the Jaycees will be serving beer and mixed drinks inside the venue throughout the evening. “Don’t forget to bring your ID!” Larson said. “We will card EVERYONE, regardless of age… We also ask that people do not bring backpacks and large purses, for security reasons.”

More music

Earlier on July 16th, DL resident Dave Herzog’s steel drum band, Island Time will be performing during the Chili & Salsa Cookoff at the DL Pavilion. The cookoff starts at 8 a.m., with the public tasting of said chili and salsa to get underway at 11:30 a.m. (which is also the approximate start time for the band’s first set). Cookoff contestants will prepare their chili on their own outdoor grills. All food must be prepared on site. Teams are encouraged to compete for the fantastic cash prizes for Best Chili,

Drop like a stone, then soar like an eagle Skydiving is back at the Detroit Lakes airport BY NATHAN BOWE

nbowe@dlnewspapers.com

Lots of people are willing to take that big leap of faith — skydiving has proven to be a popular water carnival event. “We are offering tandem jumps on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (July 8-10). Right now our schedule is booked but we will be opening up another five to 10 slots here in a few days after I hear back from another instructor,” said Jason Hanson, an instructor with Skydive Fargo. “Walk-ins are welcome as well, as we predict a few last-minute cancellations.” A tandem jump is where a student wears a harness and is connected to a U.S. Parachute Association-rated tandem instructor for the jump. The student and instructor jump from around 10,000 feet above the ground (about two miles) and freefall for around 30 seconds before deploying the parachute at around 5,000 feet above the ground, he said. “The speed in freefall will be around 120 mile per hour,” Hanson added. “From there they will have a parachute ride lasting about five minutes before landing softly in the grass back at the airport.”

Typically 10 minutes of paperwork and 15 minutes of training is all that is required for someone to enjoy a tandem jump — making it perfect for someone’s first skydiving experience. “All of our tandem instructors are USPA-rated, which requires a minimum of three years in skydiving and 500 freefall jumps,” Hanson said, “although all of our instructors have over 1,000 freefall jumps and over six years in skydiving.” The price for a tandem jump is $250, with $10 from each jump being donated to the Jaycees. Video options are available at additional cost. Licensed skydivers will also be present conducting “fun jumps,” typically jumping in groups of four. So there will be plenty of parachutes to watch. This is the second year that Skydive Fargo has offered skydiving in Detroit Lakes as part of the Northwest Water Carnival. “We’re a nonprofit, we’re not a business,” explained Hans Nielson, treasurer of Skydive Fargo. “We exist because there’s people who want to skydive in the greater Fargo-Moorhead area.” The group has grown over

All that is

A popular feature of last year’s 80th Annual Northwest Water Carnival was tandem skydiving, in which a seasoned skydiving instructor takes the plunge in harness with a first-timer, to help make the experience a safer and more enjoyable one for those who have never tried it before. the years to the point where it now owns two airplanes and a hangar. Because it’s a nonprofit, not a business, the $50 cost of membership in the group is included in a skydiving session, which is considered training, he said. There are 50 or 60 committed skydivers in Skydive Fargo who pay the $50 annual mem-

bership fee. “One of the reasons tandem is so appealing is there not a lot of training required beforehand,” Nielson said. “Most of it is familiarization. The instructor is in charge of everything during the jump.” Weight limit is around 235 pounds, he said. Weight higher than that tends to mean that a person is out of shape, and

more likely to sprain an ankle or otherwise hurt themselves upon landing. Those who embrace the sport usually move on to do solo skydiving, which requires six hours of instruction prior to the first solo jump. Skydiving becomes more affordable the more you do it, said Nielson, who is also a freefall coach.

Carnival was all smiles as “We liken it to golfing or getshe took the plunge from ting into motorcycles – there’s 5,000 feet up in the air. an initial outlay for the sport. None of us are rich guys, we just really enjoy the sport,” he said. Skydiving is surprisingly safe, and that’s because those who practice it are all about planning, notification and communication, he said. “In reality, it has to be planned better than rock climbing, it’s a little more serious – skydiving has an amazingly good safety record, which people don’t seem to understand. Statistically speaking, you’re more likely to die in a car accident on the way to the airport than get killed skydiving.” Prior to a skydiving event, “we issue a notification to airmen – anyone flying to Detroit Lakes can see there will be skydiving that day, so all airplane (traffic) will be off to the left the radio all the time.” The event in Detroit Lakes side of the runway, and we’ll run our stuff to the right side worked out quite well last year, of the runway – we spread out, Nielson said, and “we’re hopWaterCarnivalJuly2016_Layout 1 6/29/16 4:36 PM Page 1 and our pilots are talking on ing for good weather” this year

also a deal-breaker. That’s because visibility is key to safety in skydiving. “We have to be able to see the land before we jump,” he said. “And we need

visibility for other aircraft. It’s common sense. If cloud cover is over 60 percent, we may not be able to jump. We like clean, sunny days.” Wind is fine as long as it’s a steady breeze of 20 mph or less. Some wind actually helps provide a softer landing, he said. But wind gusts are a problem. They make for an inconsistent, unreliable jump. “You can’t land where you want to at the time you want to,” Nielson said. On Saturday morning the EAA Young Eagles are hosting a fly-in and pancake breakfast at the Detroit Lakes-Becker County Airport, “which makes for an awesome Saturday morning,” Hanson said. Also for water carnival, there will be $40 helicopter rides offered one weekend at the Becker County Fairgrounds, said coadmiral Chris Larson. “We’re excited, there will be some things in the sky.”

Palmer said also expect to see the beauty pageant queens waving from their classic automobiles and to hear the police cars, fire trucks and EMT vehicles blast their horns for that true parade experience. As for other new aspects to the parade, Perham is working on a new trolley, which may be ready come Water Carnival time. Palmer is also new to the parade organization, joining the Jaycee’s and accepting the parade co-chair coordination position this year, but she said she is eager to put on a good show for parade-goers. “I’m just really excited to be helping with this. I’m really excited to be on the other side of things,” Palmer said, mentioning she is thrilled for her kids to see this year’s floats. Those who wish to have a float in the parade can sign up online at dljaycees.com
