“It’s been a good thing,” said Hackel. “That’s been our whole approach this year. We’re not going to look back and go forward from where we’re at.” Hackel coached football in Detroit Lakes for 16 years coaching the freshman teams and helping out the varsity with two-a-days. He was also a player for North Dakota State University. “Working with those guys, I learned a lot from them,” he said. After four years as an assistant in the Frazee program the opportunity arose to take over for Jim Jacobson. “Our big thing right now is to get the kids to compete and get an opportunity to win games,” said Hackel. “It’s been a long time where we’ve had games we’ve

“We’re pretty solid all the way across,” said Hackel. “Our first line looks pretty solid but we get into games and we’re playing both ways, so we’ll have to see how much endurance we have and how much wind we have in the fourth quarter to compete with those teams.” With many players who saw time on the field last season, this year’s early going has been centered around new schemes on both sides of the line of scrimmage under a new coach. “Embrace the process and if we can compete in some things, that’s what I’m looking for...to see which kids are stepping up in each game,” said Hackel “We’re going to do a lot of growing and one game isn’t going to define our season. It’s a process.” Hackel’s process is about looking at what can be changed in the now and how can it affect the team positively in the weeks to come. “Slow and steady wins the race; we’re just going to kind of keep working at it,” he said. “We can always change what’s going forward. We can’t go do anything in the back. We can learn from it but now what do we do with it? We can’t look forward at what’s to come if we don’t take care of what’s here in front of us.” Frazee did not get any help from the schedulers facing Perham on the road in week one and Barnesville in the week two opener. Those teams combined to go 17-5 last year.

been in.” Frazee was 1-8 in 2016 with a first round playoff victory in 2015. Both of those seasons saw close, tough losses that could have made a difference had the outcomes reversed including a six-overtime loss to Osakis for a fifth straight loss to open 2015 and a 26-25 last minute loss to Breckenridge to start the 2016 season. “We’ve got to turn those on our side with a W and that helps build our program,” said Hackel. Getting back to varsity action has been a process that involves both the excitement of the return of Friday night lights and trepidation of starting from scratch. “There is some excitement,” Hackel said. “They’ve also been tentative. But our whole approach is we’ve got to play through it.” Frazee has only three players with varsity reps after playing a junior varsity schedule last season in juniors Luke Tweeton, Brett Graham and senior Gabe Drewes. Early in the season, Hackel is taking a running by committee approach giving kids the opportunity to step into team roles. “We’ve got a lot of kids that have to prove themselves yet,” he said. The coaching staff got their first look when Frazee hosted a preseason scrimmage with United North Central, New York Mills and Wadena-Deer Creek. The brotherly duo of junior Cole Fleisher and sophomore Broden Fleisher are vying for the quarterback position. Despite being related, the two have contrasting styles under center. “We’ve got one kid who can sit in the pocket and throw and one with a little more athletic ability out of the pocket,” said Hackel. “At first, it’s a situational thing. They have confidence and hopefully they can do all of it.” Frazee’s defensive starting unit has impressed early on and will be a benefit in games if the Hornets can run balanced time on both sides of the ball.

Raiders season dependent on new faces at skilled positions
N

ew faces at skill positions will likely determine the fate of this season’s Lake Park-Audubon Raiders football team for head coach Brian Robertson.
Senior captain Ryan Voge steps into the starting quarterback role with part-time experience from last season under center. “Getting a chance to start last year has helped him as a leader,” Robertson said. Junior Grant Briard is one of the Raiders’ tri-captains and could see some time under center if needed. Senior Parker Christianson will line up at full back behind Voge with junior captain Ben Rabideaux at tailback. The duo will be replacing departed seniors Carter Raaen and Jack Osborne, who handled much of the rushing of the load last year. Former pass threats down the field in Grant Pederson at receiver and Marcus Dickelman-Stassen at tight end will need to be replaced also. Rabideaux made an early impact in the backfield last season, but his play was cut short with an injury in week four. OPEN TO THE PUBLIC

“We’ve got a lot of juniors that had some time last year,” Robertson said. “Hopefully, that helps us this year. The Raiders have only seven seniors in Josh Rivers, Christianson, Voge, Alex Strehlow, Oskar Anderson, Justin How and Will Hannesson meaning some sophomores and that junior class will need to be effective to put wins up. Anderson has stepped up in practice after missing a lot of last year with an injury. Junior Shawn Skjold came out for football for the first time in 2017 and is expected to play, possibly start in the backfield. Last year’s team team relied a lot on Raaen and the backfield to eat up yards. LP-A did have some success throwing the ball for 200 yards against Red Lake County and nearly pulled off a big upset of Mahnomen falling 40-34 late in the game at home. “Late in the season, we sort of lost our ground attack and that is tough,” Robertson said. The year ended in a first round playoff loss to Pelican Rapids at home 34-8 in a 3-6 campaign. Ada-Borup/Norman County West and Ottertail Central will likely be at the top of the section with the rest

of the field of seven teams a toss-up until the season unfolds. “We’re just trying to get that change of mentality, finish the job, no excuses,” said Robertson. Raider players are now in their third season under Robertson where familiarity with schemes on both sides of the line of scrimmage can help dictate success. The Raiders went to team camp in Duluth along with preseason scrimmages where Robertson and his staff saw big holes made by the offensive line that were not there a season ago. “Our lineman were talking and figuring out things on their own,” said Robertson. “They still look for guidance from time to time, but the third year now, running this offense, especially on the line, it’s 11 moving parts.” LP-A has gone through a big change in the past three seasons morphing from a spread offense looking to throw the ball to a run-first mentality. Team goals are “This spring we set realistic goals, things we haven’t done in the past few years like get above .500,” said Robertson. “They want to win at least five games and I think that’s a realistic goal.” The Raiders were two plays away from that last sea-

son so the jump to reaching that mark will come down to simple execution. “We haven’t won a playoff game here in four years,” Robertson said. “Get a taste of that, winning in the playoffs, advancing and we talked about the top two dogs in our section. We’ll see how our season plays out but likely you’re going to get to the semifinals and face a state-quality team. I think that gives them an idea of how good you have to be.” The Raiders have one new coach in Connor Walselk joining Robertson, defensive coordinator Alex Becher, assistant and junior varsity coach Wayne Otto and Cole Wixo. Otto brings a tough-minded mentality to the staff and is doing much with skills and helping change the culture. The coaching staff attended a coaching camp and took away from it aspects on how they can inject a culture change team-wide and that is striving to get the players be a part of that change. “Until they start policing each other the change isn’t going to happen,” said Robertson. “It isn’t like there hasn’t been success here. We want to close that gap on those close games.”

Nuggets working out kinks before early test to open season BY ROBERT WILLIAMS
T
rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com
he Hawley Nuggets football team has the preseason sense of urgency but are dealing with a key injury under center as they head into the 2018-19 season.
“Our seniors and upperclassmen know there’s a sense of urgency and they’ve been doing a pretty good job of keeping that mindset going and having it permeate through the ranks,” head coach Peder Naatz said. The quarterback position is going to be fluid until midway through the season with senior Chase Libak getting the nod while regular starter Jacob Vetter eases into the season after a serious knee injury last year. The Nugget coaching staff is taking a sensible approach to getting Vetter back up to full speed. “He’s healed but they want us to wean him into it,” Naatz said. Vetter’s playing time has been discussed between his doctor, physical therapists, the coaching staff and Vetter’s parents. “I think it’s sometimes tougher when you’ve got kids that get hurt - it’s tougher on the parents because they love watching him play and seeing your kid miss out on something he loves, that’s no fun as a parent,” said Naatz. Vetter’s injury was not typical football knee trauma. He suffered a broken tibial plateau, plus an ACL tear and a torn meniscus. The break had to heal before the ligament surgeries could be completed five weeks later. “Otherwise, he’d probably be full go right now,” said Naatz. “He’s just chomping at the bit to get back and
trying to do as much as he can.” Nugget fans can expect to see the senior signal caller by game two or three with playing time increasing as he gains comfort and mobility. Libak took the job prior to the season with a willingness to learn and the understanding that the team needs him there rather than his usual top receiver position. “He’s a phenomenal athlete and catches everything under the sun,” said Naatz. “We talked with him before the season and we need to get through the first three or four weeks and get through it healthy. Wins and losses aren’t that crazy important right now. As long as we’re full speed ahead once we get to early October, that’s what we’re hoping for, just to survive the first half of the season.” Libak has the characteristics of a senior leader being an emotional and vocal guy in the huddle. “He knows what to say and when to say it,” said Naatz. “You’ve got to step up and do what you can to help the team.” Hawley cruised through last season’s schedule going 9-0 while outscoring their opponents 450-110, including four shutouts. Nugget rivals Barnesville snapped the run in the Section 8AA final at Fargodome 24-14 with Vetter out in the second half. That loss did not sit well over the offseason. “They have a really bitter taste from last November with Jake not being able to play at full strength and not at all in the fourth quarter,” said Naatz. “They don’t want to exact revenge, they want to get out there and play. The better they play the better off they’ll be
and more confident they’ll get.” Naatz and the Nuggets are accepting challenges early in the season, something the head coach desires to help his team improve and get them to stick their noses into some more adversity. “If we can get into some less than fun circumstances game-wise and they have to battle through some of that stuff early on, that is just going to make them that much stronger when we do get Jake back,” he said. The Nuggets will get a stern conflict week one on the road against new co-op Class 1A powerhouse Mahnomen-Waubun. The Thunderbirds will have a game in hand after opening at Ada-Borup/Norman County West in Zero Week. “It’s going to be a heck of a test, for sure,” Naatz said. “They’ve got a lot of things to figure out themselves up there, but with the loads of talent they have in their upper classes, especially their senior class with the two schools combining, they’re going to be set and have a game under their belt and we won’t. We’ll have to figure out a lot of stuff at our scrimmage.” 001767635r1

Naatz views the big matchup as a solid learning experience for the entire group on the sideline. “I think it’s good to have a test right away, it holds us coaches accountable, as well,” he said. Hawley returns both tight ends, a center and one tackle, so the interior of the line is going to need to get up to speed quickly while the corps of running backs looks to replace last year’s leader lost to graduation Donnie Loegering. Senior Trayton Cossette has drawn the assignment as the feature back and has some similarities to Loegering’s style of running. “Cossette’s just a firecracker, instant speed and he’s got some great moves,” said Naatz. “He has a little different skill set, but also very similar.” Cossette is not as big as Loegering but is faster. He also has an assortment of blocking backs to aid his quest for yardage. Senior Gunnar Lawson will line up at fullback in conventional sets with Matt Thompson expected to replace him when the Nuggets spread out. Thompson is a 247-pound tight end that Hawley plans to use in the backfield to bust open holes in opponent’s defensive lines. “He’s going to be very effective doing our kick-out
blocking,” said Naatz. Senior Brendan Flores and sophomore Justin Koski have also been getting reps with the ball at halfback. “We’re just trying to get enough reps for these guys so that they’re comfortable with their assignments,” said Naatz. Vetter, Libak and Lawson have been named captains with Noah Glad expected to be named the fourth later in the preseason. “It’s not so much the football stuff, it’s the mindset and the mentality and having the right attitude and those four kids are just awesome in that regard,” said Naatz. Defensively, the Nuggets came into the season ready to play at the second level. “Our secondary started communicating right away,” said Naatz. “We didn’t have to talk about the little things; they just started doing it right away.” Four starting seniors and five to six players are interchangeable in the secondary on a defense led by Lawson calling the plays at the linebacker position. While the Nuggets have, perhaps, a few more holes to fill than normal, Hawley joins Barnesville as the favorites in Section 8AA despite some unknowns prior to week one.

“It’s kind of a crapshoot around here,” said Naatz.

Thunderbirds loaded with talent
Mahnomen-Waubun football co-op produces state title hopes BY ROBERT WILLIAMS
W
rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com
hile the winter and spring sports teams already combined between Mahnomen and Waubun high schools, the football teams embark on their first season together this fall and combine for a load of talent on both sides of the ball.
Armed with 16 seniors, the Thunderbirds also have a wealth of experience. That many upperclassmen is something new for either program prior to this year. “I don’t think we’ve ever had 16 seniors,” said head coach John Clark Jr. “The best part of it is they’re all versatile; they’re great athletes that can play a number of positions. That’s the hard part right now, figuring out the best one for them.” Both returning starters at the quarterback position are back for their senior seasons in Mahnomen’s Jon Starkey and Waubun’s Parker Syverson. Both players have proven to be game-changers and will give opposing defenses massive headaches. “We’ll kind of be a two-headed monster,” said Clark Jr. “Starkey understands the game so well and what we’re trying to do on offense. He’s been a waterboy and running quarterback drills with us since fifth grade. He probably knows it as well as I do.” Syverson gives the Thunderbirds a wildcat option

with his athleticism and the duo will likely create multiple offensive sets depending on who is under center. Both players can line up as running backs also, so rather than missed time from the other QB being in formation, they’ll likely both be in the backfield often. “Parker is so athletic and he can do so many things; it’ll be interesting,” Clark Jr. said. “We’re going to have different packages as the season goes along. We’ll see what works best against each team.” With Starkey the likely opening snap starter and Syverson at fullback, the Thunderbirds have even more talent elsewhere in the backfield in seniors Jayden Heisler, Tayvis Zima, and Izaiah Asher. If that is not enough, senior Chandler Toczek is back after missing two seasons with injuries. “All he’s done is lift weights, get stronger and faster and he’s a little bowling ball - he’s going to be an X-factor,” Clark Jr. said. The Thunderbirds will look a bit different than what either program’s fans are used to seeing. The offensive versatility will showcase more emphasis on the passing game while the standard protocol of running the ball down the opponent’s throats will still be in play. It will be far more difficult to stack the box against this offensive unit. “We’re going to be able to spread you out and definitely throw the ball more than we ever have,” Clark Jr.

said. “I’ve never seen a group of backs like this since I’ve been coaching.” The extensive stable of backfield talent transcends the breadth of the roster as both Waubun and Mahnomen played the past few seasons being one or two injuries away from the season being in peril successfully and healthwise as numbers were barely enough to keep freshmen and lower grade players off the field and away from potential injuries. One of the weaker points of both clubs was on the line. According to Clark Jr., the Thunderbirds are a little thin at the backup positions but nothing compared a team that finished the season with 22 players last year. Mahnomen captured its eighth straight Section 8A championship last year. Waubun, the two-time section champs, were defeated one game short of the final at Nevis in a defensive struggle. The co-op gives the coaches and players reason to think beyond the section final this season. “The kids understand with the athletes we have and the senior class coming back that they have one goal and I truly believe it’s a realistic goal, but at the same time, it takes a lot of luck and hard work to get there,” Clark Jr said. “Hopefully, they understand that and are not looking too far ahead too fast.” Keeping the team level-headed is one of the stressed points of the coaching staff because that goal is a state

championship. Waubun’s last sniff at a 9-man title was 2016 and a state semifinal appearance at U.S. Bank Stadium. The last state title came in an undefeated 30-0 Mahnomen run that produced back-to-back Class A titles 2012-13. Bringing together two highly successful programs has taken some time to get used to and the former Bombers are making the adjustments from 9-man to 11-man football. “I think they’re still getting comfortable with each other, obviously,” Clark Jr. said. “A huge part was coaches getting on the same page and terminology. They’re always little differences in how you run a defense and philosophy and things like that. Communication is going to be key for the coaches. That’s a work in progress too. It’s going to be fun process.” The entire coaching staffs from both programs remain
giving the players plenty of options for instruction in practice and during games. “One key part we were adamant about with the co-op was we’re not doing it to save money,” he said. “We’re doing it to increase participation so coaches shouldn’t lose their job. All the coaches are back.” The new-look Thunderbirds will be tested early in a Week Zero game between two of the best Class A teams in the area. The Thunderbirds face the other new co-op in the area Ada-Borup/Norman County West Friday, Aug. 24 at 7 p.m. in Ada. The Section 6A Cougars were 12-1 last year and made a run to the state semifinals. Adding NCW players will only bolster their roster’s adaptability just like the Section 8A Thunderbirds. “That’ll be a very fun rivalry going forward here,” Clark Jr. said “I think there is a lot of mutual respect for the programs.”

Experienced Titans ready for return to top of the section BY ROBERT WILLIAMS rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com
T
he Norman County East/Ulen Hitterdal Titans are eager to get back to the state tournament under 2017 District 9 West coach of the year Dustin Flaten after suffering season-ending losses the past two seasons to section rivals Nevis. “Team goals are set high; the last five years we’ve been in three section championships and it’s no different,” Flaten said. “They want a chance to go to state and show what we can do.” Nevis edged the Titans 20-18 in a tight game at Fargodome in the Section 6, 9-man final last season and NCE/UH has not been to state since a semifinal finish in 2014. Getting back over that playoff hump is in the eyes of the players as the season progresses. “We definitely think so, all of the seniors think that,” starting senior quarterback Tate Maesse said. “A section championship is definitely what we’re reaching for and we all know we can do it too.” The quest for state will come without one of the
Titans’ key players on both sides of the line of scrimmage. Senior Sunny Resnick will miss the season after surgery in mid-August to repair a torn ACL suffered in the American Legion baseball season. Resnick was a regular running back and the defensive leader on the 2017 squad. He was the leading tackler on defense and also recorded seven interceptions. “All our camps this summer he was in on every tackle; it’s going to be a blow to miss him,” Flaten said. Without the bruising Resnick in the backfield the Titans are adjusting and going with team speed as an antidote. “Sunny was one of our best running backs last year,” said Maesse. “He’s a tough loss on offense and defense. With him out, we have more speed on the outside and are able to pass more than in past years.” Senior Steffen Sather has moved to running back to replace Resnick from a receiving position and both Flaten and Maesse are high on his potential contributions. “One guy who is going to open a lot of eyes is Steffen Sather,” Flaten said. Hopefully, he can be a nice D005754793

complement to Noah Klemetson.” Klemetson, along with fellow backfield mate Tate Hoseth, are two of the Titans’ returning all-district players from last season. Klemetson and departed senior Kyle Syverson provided NCE/UH with a solid one-two punch and now as the lead back Klemetson will look for this year’s mate in the always punishing run-first offense of Flaten’s. Klemetson will also be making a defensive contribution at his usual spot of linebacker after giving Flaten some much-needed flexibility on the D-side last year. “Hopefully, we’ll have him back at his natural position at linebacker,” said Flaten. Klemetson led the team in tackles as a linebacker his sophomore season. “Last year, we knew we needed help at the D-back position and he did a great job for us,” Flaten said. “Offensively, he’s going to get the bulk of the carries for us and when we go spread he’s going to be our first or second target there too.” Sather is the fastest player on the team and the Titans want to get him into open territory in both running and passing situations.

2018 “He has hands like nobody I’ve ever seen,” Maesse said. “He’s very athletic.” Knee injuries are nothing new to Maesse who played with one last season and is wearing a brace this year. “It feels better; I feel like it’s safer to run on,” said Maesse. Maesse has the luxury of two tall receivers on the end of the line in six-foot-seven senior Kale McCollum and six-foot-five Hunter Cromptom. “McCollum’s struggled until this year with hands and we’ve always wanted to play him at tight end. We put him down at guard for a while but he’s shown he can catch the ball,” Flaten said. Maesse is excited about both options in the passing game. “Crompton is tall, fast wide receiver who can catch too,” he said. “It’ll be fun to have some targets to throw to.” However, Maesse and opponents of the Titans know what to expect first from NCE/UH and that’s a punishing run game. “Flaten has that mentality that we’re going to do this and do it crisp and clean every play,” said Maesse. “If that doesn’t work, we’ll switch it up. That’s just how we roll.” McCollum, a three-year defensive starter, will con-
tinue to be a defensive stopper in contain defense. “He spreads the field, contains and sets the edge at the D-end spot,” said Flaten. He’ll be joined by Riley Resnick, a six-foot-three, 245-pound junior on the line. “He’s a beast and tough to handle,” Flaten said. “He gets his motor going, contains his gap and can chase things down.” One change this season is the loss of the rivalry with Waubun after the Bombers joined with Mahnomen and moved to Class 1A. Replacing Waubun will be Park Christian, a team that did not field a varsity last season due to low roster numbers and fear for the safety of the players. The Falcons played two varsity games in 2016 before head coach Lawton Burgstahler pushed to forfeit the remainder of the season and move to a junior varsity schedule, according to a report by Chris Murphy of the Forum of Fargo-Moorhead. “Obviously, with Waubun going with Mahnomen it waters down our section a little bit,” said Flaten. “This year we have an opportunity and we need to take advantage of it. We’ve been knocking on that door; we’ve been there. I think it’s time for these guys to say we’re going to bust through that door. We need to keep playing better.”

The Titans were 9-2 last season with one of those losses coming to Waubun. With the Bombers gone and Nevis having a lot of positions to fill after last year’s trip to state, the Titans are the favorites in the sixteam section. “The team that scares me is Win-E-Mac,” Flaten said. “They started coming around last year and I think they’ve got some guys back. I think they can be up there.” For the seniors on the team with big dreams this year, the grind is still in its early stages and the task at hand is more the basics than thoughts of the playoffs. “It’s just improving every day and working hard, getting these younger guys some experience on the field,” Maesse said. The Titans open the season Thursday, Aug. 30 against the Ponies of Warren-Alvarado-Oslo in Warren.

he can make the throws.” The team has put work in to balance the attack on offense; last year’s passing game was not a strength. “There is just a lot that goes into it, growing pains with the pass game,” said Omang. “Getting that system in and the mindset, it just takes more time than running the ball every time.” In Omang’s third campaign he now has players who have been in the system two seasons and familiarity throughout the program is going to benefit the Lakers. “That makes a big difference,” said Omang. “People talk about the playbooks a lot. I think it makes more difference in the weight room, the culture, the philosophy, all that stuff is even bigger. We’re all on the same page.” 001771175r1
The Lakers battled the injury bug early in 2017 and got off to a 1-5 start as an all-sophomore backfield tried to get up to speed. “The hard part last year was we had those injuries right away and had to go to the young guys,” head coach Josh Omang said. “Sometimes that works itself out. Now, we have guys back there that have done it before and they know what they’re doing.” Leading the way will be the duo of Isaiah Thompson and Gabe Hanninen. Thompson can break a game open in one carry and was a threat on special teams highlighted by a four-touchdown performance, including a kick six, in a win at Park Rapids. Hanninen was successful in short yardage and has shown signs in the preseason he is ready to get involved in the passing game also. The all-junior backfield also includes Reed Mace, an
explosive runner when he gets to the edge. He is also the backup quarterback this year. Jackson Fields and Jackson Rhodes will also get touches in the running game. Six-foot-three, 190-pound junior Max Gunderson takes over at quarterback and will get his first career varsity start in week one. “There’s going to be a little learning right away, but by the end of the year he should be where we need him to be,” Omang said. “He worked hard and he’s a really coachable kid. He asks good questions. Gundy can do everything; even at that size some people will look at him and don’t think he’s a running threat. Certainly, he had a solid year running the ball last year at JV and

The Lakers are coming off a first losing season since 2009 after posting a 4-6 mark in 2017. After a 1-5 start, DL won three straight games culminating in a big 41-40 playoff victory on the road at Willmar before falling in the section semis at Fergus Falls. “We’ve got to get back there and get the job done,” Omang said. “It’s a good group, they’re excited and work hard. They want to be good too. They know what it’s about, all this stuff.” Omang gestured to the photographs of past Detroit Lakes championship teams in the weight room office. “They want someone to look at their picture, like these in here, not be the forgotten group,” he said. Team goals were already set prior to the season. Coach Omang and assistant Vern Schnathorst meet with the players, beginning in the winter season to discuss coming season. “They have to come up with their goals, but they have to come up with the everyday steps to get them too,” said Omang. “We can’t just let them say, ‘here’s our goal and that’s it.’ We talk about how are we going to do that? How do we know if it’s working?” Red zone efficiency is just one of areas the team has set numbers to hit and aiming to make the big play and protecting and taking the ball away are two other difference-making areas the Lakers want to excel at. “We want to win explosive plays and the turnover battle,” said Omang. “I believe in that one because you can go back and see that.” Game experience is high on the defense with a full secondary returning and both sides of the line should be improved. “I think our depth issues are more so at linebacker,” said Omang. “We’re really solid there but we need some depth.” Senior Charles Barnett is just one of the Laker wres-

tlers, including Thompson, Noah Olds, Andreas Barnett, Andrew Annette and others making an impact. “Those kids are tough,” said Omang. “They’ve done a lot of damage themselves in the state tournament and sections. I like those guys. That’s the whole idea of multiple sports. We love that. They’re grinders; they work hard and are not afraid to get in there.” A big addition to the DL defense will be the return of Hall of Fame coach Flint Motschenbacher, something Omang is excited about. “I have a great relationship with Flint; Flint is awesome,” Omang said. “He is the, if not, one of the best defensive coaches in the state. I’m not a big ego guy. For me, it’s a no-brainer if you can get somebody with that experience and knowledge on your staff.” The Lakers open the season against a familiar nemesis in the Rocori Spartans in Cold Spring Thursday, Aug. 30. “It’s not going to be easy,” Omang said. “They’ve been on top of the section and we haven’t beaten them in five years. It’s all on us. It doesn’t matter who they have as far as their roster or coach, it’s going to be just like when people used to play us.” Rocori is led by three-year starter and UND commit at running back Matt Koshiol and a new head coach in James Herberg, the defensive coordinator who took over for Mike Rowe, now the superintendent in Henning. “The times that we’ve played them, since I’ve been here, we haven’t take care of the ball,” Omang said. “We’ve had really good games with them, it comes down to those one or two mistakes.” The Spartans own the last four section titles since DL’s last championship in 2013. A road victory in week one would be a huge start to the season.

Yellowjackets ready for more in 2018 T
The Perham Yellowjackets were on the brink of making their first state football tournament since 2012 when they advanced to the 2017 Section 8AAA Championship game. However, the result from the championship game is something they hope to reverse in 2018. The Yellowjackets were thumped by Pequot Lakes 56-22.
The Yellowjackets return several key players from last year’s team and should boast the explosiveness that they had in 2017. The Yellowjackets tied for second with a 5-2 record in the Midwest District, Red Division. They averaged 33.3 points per game last year, which ranked second in the division. Quarterback Jenson Beachy and the Yellowjackets re-wrote the record book in 2017 and hope to do much of the same in 2018. Beachy finished the season with 2,370 yards passing and 23 touchdowns. Beachy holds three of the top five spots for passing yards in a game. The current record is 435 yards which he put up in a 40-6 victory over Park Rapids. Several of the offensive weapons return in 2018. Zach Peterson and Ty Moser return to the backfield. Peterson rushed for 361 yards, while Moser finished with 341 yards. Moser led the team in receiving with 39 receptions for 769 yards. Josh Jeziorski is back at wide receiver as well. Colton Kostynick, Dawson Stevens and Jon Enomorado return to anchor the Yellowjackets line, while
Jeziorski and Dawson Kellogg return to key spots defensively as well. Noah Rooney and Colton Hackel are two key newcomers to the team and are expected to make an impact on offense right away. Perham head coach Kyle Knutson said the team’s goals are to be competitive in the Midwest District and to advance through the Section 8AAA playoffs. After the Black and Gold Scrimmage in Perham, Knutson said their quarterbacks looked sharp. Beachy, Finn Diggins and Hackel saw time at quarterback. They followed it up with a strong scrimmage at the Barnesville scrimmage fest with Hawley, Park Rapids Area and Barnesville. “We saw some guys playing hard and that’s a reflection of how they have been practicing. They have been practicing very hard and we are happy with that,” Knutson said. “Offensively, every quarterback made great reads and that’s important in the offense that we run.” Knutson listed Pequot Lakes, Dilworth-GlyndonFelton and the Yellowjackets as early Section 8AAA favorites. “We get a chance to play a game the first week this year and we are excited about that,” Knutson said. “We are going to prepare for it and we are going to make it count.” Knutson said he has been proud of how the kids have been competing at all levels.

elican Rapids is coming off a 4-6 season and a road playoff victory in Lake Park to build upon after snapping a losing streak that went 20 games last season. Head coach Dave Haugen’s club is ready to continue building on last year’s positives.
“We did have some positives and as a group they had success as junior varsity kids,” said Haugen. “That doesn’t always carry over, but it’s still a positive thing. They know what it’s like to win and they understand that feeling. It gives them a little bit of confidence going into things. With our varsity wins last year, it gives them the attitude that we can do this and win some games.” Last year’s Vikings had a big threat in the passing game in split end Jacob Gottenborg, who is currently seeing playing time at Valley City State University as a freshman. Replacing his abilities up the field will be difficult. “The reality is no,” said Haugen. “When you’re stepping in as a true freshman and getting playing time right away, those guys are tough to replace.” In those shoes will be a pair of experienced upperclassmen in seniors Hayden Christenson and Eli Sytsma at the split end and tight end look. “Hayden and Eli have been on the field for varsity football,” said Haugen. “They’re seniors now so you expect them to pick up a little more of the load.” The Vikings have a pair of options at quarterback with senior Damien Britten and sophomore McHale Korf. “They both have different things that they do very well and you can kind of run the same stuff with both of them,” said Haugen. “One will tend to maybe execute some aspects better than the other but both bring a lot to it.” Each player will likely be on the field at the same time taking over another skill position when not under center with juniors Matt Osborne and Matt Ziebell doing a lot of the work at running back. Many of the same names will be other side of the line
of scrimmage until younger players make a push for more playing time.n the o It’s a ton of two-way guys,” said Haugen. “I was really pleased with our linebackers so far in scrimmage - playing both fast and aggressive.” The backfield mirrors the linebacking corps in Osborne and Ziebel backing up the defensive line. “They’re hard running backs, both strong and physical, pretty good qualities to have in a linebacker,” Haugen said. Backups will be a few juniors and sophomores and a lot of moving pieces if injuries arise. Players like Britten give Haugen some versatility being able to play both on the line and at linebacker if needed. “We’ve told the guys to learn a bunch of stuff,” Haugen said. “It gives you a lot of options and it gives us a lot of options and so far, they’ve been doing a good job. We’ve had a really willing attitude. Tell me what to do coach and I’ll go out there and I’m going to do it. The kids get along and enjoy being out here just playing football.” Pelican’s captains are center and defensive lineman Tucker Fladmark, nose guard Zane Brosowske and Christenson at split end and safety. The line will be the spot to watch for improvement over the season with a lot of new faces up front and losing a player to moving and a few summer bang-ups have the Vikings in need of players stepping up to move the chains.

“We had some offseason injuries that eliminated, one way or the other, potentially three starting lineman,” said Haugen. It’s a toss-up on if the running backs outweigh the line as a group but Haugen has some players ready to get after it up front. “They’re a bit tenacious and you go with how much can we accomplish with quickness and technique? We’re going to find out,” he said. The Vikings have a tough schedule right off the bat with games against Pillager and Breckenridge. “That’s true for most teams,” said Haugen. “There’s probably nobody sitting there saying we’re home free and it’s going to be a piece of cake. That’s how it should be. It’s a day-to-day thing and keep getting better. Let’s keep adding and building on that.” State semifinalists from a season ago Ada-Borup/Norman County West and typically tough Ottertail Central will be the teams to aim for in the section. “We’d like to get enough wins so we can get into that four, five seed,” said Haugen. “If we can pick up a home playoff game it will have been a good regular season.”
