A longstanding and beloved summer tradition in Detroit Lakes, the Northwest Water Carnival would have celebrated its 85th season in 2020 were it not canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. Normally a 10-day event, the Water Carnival is a celebration of the Lakes Area’s finest feature -- water. The many games, competitions and other events that are always a part of the Water Carnival all feature water in some way, with most taking place on the water, in the water, or right next to it, on the City Beach. Those who partake in a Water Carnival event can expect to get wet, at least a little. Even the pinnacle Parade of the Northwest has water as a central feature, with squirt guns and water balloons frequently aimed at both participants and paradegoers. The Water Carnival is organized by the Detroit Lakes Jaycees, a nonprofit group of young individuals working to benefit the community. “We try to put on as many events as possible to engage the community, which, therefore, allows us to use any money for a variety of services which are used to help families in need, fund scholarships, provide free events for the community to enjoy, etc.,” says Kate Spaeth, current President of the Jaycees. “Although we were not able to hold the Water Carnival this year, this event is a true testament to how devoted our members are. They will give all they have to make sure that everyone has a wonderful time, even though the 10 days will bring us all to an understandable state of exhaustion. I am very proud of all of our members volunteering their time and taking pride in what they do.” Spaeth says she’s heard great things from the public about the Water Carnival, with some people even planning their summer vacations around it because it’s become such a tradition for them.

Boasting a wide variety of international, national, regional and local music, theatre and dance performances, the Historic Holmes Theatre promises some great options for fans of live entertainment. Located in a historic school building that has been converted, this performing arts and events center is now home to an art deco theatre, large ballroom, art gallery, creative space and what may be the world’s largest penny floor. Also known as the “Off Duty Chief,” performer Tim Eggebraaten worked as the Chief of Police in Detroit Lakes for over five years (after nearly 20 years with the department) before retiring in 2016. It was during his time as an officer, in 2003, when he began professionally performing as a oneman-band, though he’s been singing his whole life and playing guitar for more than 30 years. At first, Eggebraaten played occasional night and weekend gigs, as a hobby. But later, he was booked up for shows all over the region and became one of Detroit Lakes’ most well-known and beloved performers. Today, Eggebraaten is focusing on professional speaking, combining his music with stories and life lessons to help others find their “Rhythm of Life.” He says his love of entertaining will keep him on community stages as the “Off Duty Chief” for as long as he can do it. Audiences say Eggebraaten’s shows are “unique, personal, authentic, fun, energetic, funny” and more. The variety of music he plays appeals to many different age groups and musical tastes, and he often ad-libs and injects lyrics about people or situations happening in real time. The result is a fun atmosphere and enjoyable show. “Thank you to everyone who voted for me,” says Eggebraaten. “To be nominated with the caliber of talent in the category was an honor. The other entertainers are my role models and all play an integral part in the live music scene in Detroit Lakes! We are fortunate to have so many incredible venues and talent in our community.”

Marshmallow is a non-profit animal shelter in Detroit Lakes that also serves as Animal Control for Detroit Lakes, Frazee, Lake Park, Audubon, Waubun, Callaway and Mahnomen, boarding any animals picked up by animal control officers or police departments within those communities. Marshmallow also takes in animals found by citizens within Becker County, as well as animals that can no longer be cared for by their owners. “The animals have a safe place with us until they are claimed, adopted, or transferred to a foster-based rescue,” says Cassi Ohman, shelter manager. “We typically take in close to 500 animals per year.” Run by a board of directors, Marshmallow officially became a 501(c)3 nonprofit in 2008, two years after taking in its first rescue. The shelter currently employs two full-time and five part-time workers, and also has volunteers. People who have adopted animals from Marshmallow comment on the facility’s cleanliness and the “awesome care” provided to the animals there. As one of the shelter’s regular volunteers, Rowan Wendiger says, “When it comes to us, family extends beyond human. The animals are our families.”
“There is so much interconnection between complete strangers because of the animals they now have, or have once fostered or with which they have spent time,” Wendiger adds. “It has built a web of unending support and ties to one another that being stronger in numbers is not only helpful, but is unavoidable. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and in our experience it makes a village when taking care of these animals.” Ohman says the adoption process “can be time consuming,” but adds that, “We have often heard how much it is appreciated that we take our time in finding the animals the right home, not just the first home. We look for the best fit for each animal, even if it means waiting a little longer.”

A friend of mine had just been hired at Lakeside 1981, and I decided to give them a try, as well. “It was not what I expected, with linen tablecloths and a higher-class menu, which included steak, lobster and flaming dessert. I thought to myself, "this is not for me.” “But, I stayed — and I was able to see the transformation of Lakeside 1981 as Chet Collins bought it and slowly started to change things for the better. Hoffman’s Meat Market has been in business for 41 years, selling a large selection of meat products and also offering deer processing. Owner Randy Gravelle has been at the helm of Hoffman’s for the past decade. Anywhere from eight to 12 employees work with him, depending on the time of year. “Customers are always telling us we have the best steaks, hamburger, sticks and jerky,” Gravelle says. “We sell a lot of burger, sticks and jerky all year ‘round.” Hoffman’s also sells pork, poultry, sausages and other choice meat products. The business supplies hamburger to Sunlite Bar & Grill, which has won Best Burger 4 years in a row! “We take pride in the consistency and quality of our products,” Gravelle says.
A non-profit store that benefits the Boys & Girls Club of Detroit Lakes, the Boys & Girls Club Thrift Store sells a mix of new products, truckload sales, and, of course, thrift items. The store has been in operation for 10 years, and celebrated a move into a bigger, more functional space in 2020, the former Kmart building. “We have the unique opportunity of offering high quality used goods to our customers while helping children in the area,” says a statement from the store. “It is a win’win!” Customers of the store often comment on how large it is, and how big of a selection it offers. The store employs 34 people. “We really appreciate how supportive the community is, both from a donation standpoint and how loyal our shoppers are,” the statement continues. “The benefit to all of the kids who attend the Boys & Girls Club is unmeasurable and so valuable to the community.
