Greetings: On behalf of the Detroit Lakes City Council and all the citizens of Detroit Lakes, I would like to extend a warm welcome to our city. The city is built on Detroit Lake, and located in the beautiful western Minnesota lake country 40 miles east of Fargo-Moorhead. A high-energy community, Detroit Lakes is a thriving business and industry hub with a strong economic base focused on strong steady growth. We have a good mix of industrial and manufacturing, service businesses and retail. We are known for our top-rated schools, regional healthcare services and our revitalized downtown district.

We enjoy a tremendous quality of life here in Detroit Lakes with numerous recreational facilities and opportunities. The Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center features a state-of the-art fitness center and the Historic Holmes Theater; Detroit Mountain Recreation Area is a top-notch winter ski area with year-round mountain biking; and the beautiful Detroit County Club, one of the oldest municipal courses in the state, is open to the public. The new normal
Despite ongoing COVID concerns, 2021 saw the return of many local festivals and events By Vicki Gerdes | Editor, Guide to Becker County After more than a year of canceled or postponed events due to COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, the lakes area slowly began to return to a ‘new normal’ in the summer of 2021. The lakes area once again played host to a wide variety of entertaining opportunities for enjoying the arts, the outdoors and of course, all the region’s beautiful lakes and rivers, from the Northwest Water Carnival to the Street Faire at the Lakes, Tuesdays in the Park and the Becker County Fair. Most summer festivals and concerts saw near-record attendance, and Detroit Lakes’ 150th birthday festivities were 6 | 2022 Guide to Becker County
a big hit, as well, with the 150 Sails Up public art project, Heritage Fest and more drawing crowds to enjoy all the community had to offer. February’s Polar Fest was “super-sized” this year, with 17 days of winter fun serving as the finale to the city’s Sesquicentennial. Regardless of the season, there are always trails to be found at local parks and nature preserves like Sucker Creek and Dunton Locks, for hiking, cross country skiing or simply enjoying nature up close and personal. There are also lots of quaint shopping boutiques and stores as well as coffee shops for you to stop, rest and meet some friends for a hot cup
of java, espresso or an iced beverage of your choice — and our local restaurants have some pretty tasty food, as well.
A winter wonderland
During the winter, a village of fish houses takes over both Big and Little Detroit lakes, and snowmobilers will find over 250 miles of groomed trails winding their way through the woods and fields of Becker County. At the 200-acre Detroit Mountain Recreation Area (detroitmountain.com), located just a few short miles southeast of Detroit Lakes, guests can enjoy a full range of winter activities, from downhill

shortly after Friday turns into Saturday at the stroke of midnight, when anglers can get onto their favorite lakes once more — and legally keep the northern pike, walleyes and sauger they catch. Spring months can also find lakes area residents and visitors looking through the treetops for that one-of-a kind bird. The Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds, which turns 25 this year, is scheduled for May 19-21. Visit the festival’s Facebook page, call 800-542-3992 or contact the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce at dlchamber@VisitDetroitLakes. com for the latest information on this popular event. Summer, which doubles the population of Detroit Lakes each year, brings iconic celebrations like the Northwest Water Carnival (dljaycees.com/ water-carnival-3), which has been hosted by the Detroit Lakes Jaycees for over eight decades, as well as the Becker County Fair (beckercountyfair.com), celebrating its 128th anniversary in 2023, and the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament (pine2palmgolf.com), established 90 years ago.
and cross country skiing to tubing, fat tire biking and even a visit to their terrain park to try out your best snowboarding and skiing tricks. Maplelag Resort (maplelag.com), located between Callaway and Richwood, offers almost 45 miles of cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails, an ice skating rink and sliding hill. Many of those trails remain open after the snow has melted, for mountain biking enthusiasts to enjoy. Other area resorts offering snowmobiling, ice fishing, skiing and snowshoeing activities during the winter months include Rainbow Resort near Waubun (rainbowresort.com), Pinehurst Resort outside Naytahwaush (pinehurstmn. 8 | 2022 Guide to Becker County
com) and Ice Cracking Lodge & Resort (icecrackinglodge.com) in rural Ponsford.
Fishing openers, bird watching and more
Once the ice is off the lakes and the snow has melted, area anglers begin to turn their thoughts to the annual Minnesota fishing opener, which will take place on May 14 this year. Will the weather be friendly for anglers to catch their fill? Will the boat motor start? Will the pike and walleyes bite? Is there enough bait? Those questions will once again be on the minds of anglers and bait dealers as they ready for the season. Most answers won’t be known until
The return of WE Fest
The granddaddy of all Minnesota music festivals, WE Fest returned to Detroit Lakes and the Soo Pass Ranch last year after a one-year absence, and new owner Matt Mithun is planning a renaissance for the 38-year-old country music festival that includes a return to its roots as a locally owned and operated event. “We want to kind of bring back that personal touch...to make it a community event again,” Mithun said. “The partnerships and interaction with the community are a very important part of it (the festival).” Mithun’s family has owned the 400acre ranch just south of Detroit Lakes for most of the festival’s 38-year run at the site, which made it a natural fit for him.

time, from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on into the fall months. Detroit Lakes boasts 412 lakes within 25 miles, including two inside its city limits — Big and Little Detroit — as well as a mile-long city beach that is one of the community’s biggest summer attractions. In addition, Becker County boasts more than a half dozen golf courses, with most of them within a 20-minute drive of Detroit Lakes. As previously mentioned, nearby Dunton Locks and Sucker Creek provide opportunities for hiking and exploring, as do the Tamarac and Hamden Slough national wildlife refuges. Maplewood and Itasca state parks are also just a short drive or bike ride away.
History buffs may want to stroll through the Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Detroit Lakes (at the junction of Washington Avenue and Highway 10), which contains plaques and monuments celebrating area war veterans past and present; the Grand Army of the Republic Park located just a couple blocks north of Highway 10 on Washington Avenue, which is one of just a handful of GAR parks still in existence across the USA; and Oak Grove Cemetery, located just north of town on Highway 59, which boasts a Civil War monument erected more than a century ago. miles north of Detroit Lakes, offers opportunities for guests to sample a variety of vintages while relaxing in the bucolic setting. The winery has live music every weekend through the summer, and also hosts several fun events including the Summer Solstice Festival, Toast to Tamarac (a benefit for the nearby refuge hosted by the Friends of Tamarac); and the Grape Stomp, which has become a fall tradition. Visit richwoodwinery.com or check out their Facebook page for updates. Labor Day weekend brings two popular area events, the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion (Sept. 2-5), which has been bringing steam engine lovers and old-school farming enthusiasts to the tiny community of Rollag (rollag.com) for more than six decades, and the Laddies Loppet Mountain Bike Stage Race at Maplelag (maplelag.com), which will celebrate its 31st anniversary on Sept. 3.
Fall festivals & leaf peeping
Speaking of Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, the nature area typically plays host to well over 3,000 area grade
school students between September and May. The refuge’s environmental education facility, the Discovery Center, offers indoor and outdoor learning opportunities with experienced and well-trained volunteers from the Friends of Tamarac. Tamarac also hosts annual events like a fall festival, where guests are invited to explore the confines of the refuge by bus, by car or on foot, as well as to participate in a series of organized, environmentally-themed activities for the whole family, all free of charge. Food, memorabilia and other goods are available for purchase at the festival site as well as in the gift shop at the Visitor’s Center. In addition, fall brings the 26th Annual Dick Beardsley Run (Sept. 10) and Damien Fall Home Tour (Oct. 1) in Detroit Lakes, along with Lake Park’s popular Pumpkin Fest and the Hairy Man 5K in Vergas, an homage to the legendary, Bigfoot-like Hairy Man that is said to wander the Vergas trails at night. There’s also Leaf Days at Maplewood State Park, along with many other opportunities for viewing the area’s beautiful fall colors in September and October.
As fall gives way to winter, the Historic Holmes Theatre’s (dlccc.org/holmes-theatre.html) new season ramps up with its annual Holmes Art Show in November, which brings dozens of area artisans to the Holmes Ballroom during the day, while offering a variety of live music in the main theater at night.
Spend your holidays at the lakes
Come Thanksgiving weekend, Holy Rosary Church in Detroit Lakes hosts its annual Community Feast on Thanksgiving Day, which is also the opening day of Lake Park’s annual Parade of Trees at the American Legion, running through the following Sunday, Nov. 27. That weekend is also typically the ski season opener at Detroit Mountain. December brings a plethora of seasonal celebrations both public and private to the lakes area, with events like Rock & Roll Christmas at the Holmes and Advent Mini-Concerts at First Lutheran Church, among many others. As the local Chamber of Commerce likes to say, it’s all here, all year.

AUDUBON
The City of Audubon is located on Highway 10 approximately 40 miles east of Fargo, ND, and 210 miles northwest of Minneapolis, MN. Situated in the southwest corner of Becker County, it developed as a result of the 1871 expansion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Established in 1872, Audubon was settled mainly by farmers of Scandinavian descent. The town was named after the great American naturalist and artist, James J. Audubon. During an early tour of the “Audubon’’ branch of the NP line, a passenger, Audubon’s niece, commented on the beauty of the lily- covered prairie and asked that if a railroad station were ever built there, that it be named after her uncle. While searching for a township name, the Audubon name suggestion seemed to stick, and on Jan. 2, 1881, it became the official town name. Today, Audubon is home to Lake Park-Audubon Elementary School, Team Industries, Orton’s convenience store, Aurochs Veterinary Service, JCS Cabinetry & Design, Country Wood Products, FM Recreational, TBS Express, P51, TK Auto, Keller Diesel, RZ Customs, Auctionblock LLC, and Audubon Upholstery. Audubon also maintains a post office, a co-op elevator, the Audubon Liquor Store, and a meat market, Audubon Meats, Inc., as well as three churches: First Lutheran, Immanuel Lutheran and Church of the Living God. CALLAWAY
Callaway is located about 12 miles north of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59, approximately 45 air miles east of Fargo. It’s situated in Becker’s northwest corner, along the Soo Line Railroad’s “Glenwood route’’ — a section of track between Winnipeg and Minneapolis. The small farming communities of Richwood and Westbury lie within a 5 mile radius of Callaway. As the Soo Line pushed northward in 1903, the Callaway community developed. Callaway’s rich farmland attracted many early Scandinavian settlers who were interested in farming its fertile tracts of land. Today, agriculture remains Callaway’s main economic resource, but the city is also home to an Event Center, as well as both Beautiful Savior Lutheran and Assumption Catholic churches, a volunteer fire department, Lions Club, post office, municipal liquor store, Midwest Bank branch office, Native Harvest, Noah’s Insurance, On the Go Convenience Store, Cenex Harvest States elevator and Anderson Ag Services. Population: 178 (2020 Census) City Government Meetings: 2nd Tuesday of each month, 6 pm, City Hall Mayor: Gretchen Stalboerger Clerk-Treasurer: Shelly Dillon, 375-4692, callaway@arvig.net Public Works: Matt Dillon Council Members: Cliff Bryngelson, Emily Annette, Julie Molacek, Kenneth Blattenbauer Fire Chief: Keith Heinlein The Callaway Fire Department serves Richwood, Holmesville Townships and portions of Riceville, Callaway and Hamden townships.
DETROIT LAKES
Detroit Lakes was originally home of the Sioux, until the Chippewa pushed them westward. During the mid 1800s, Detroit Lakes was a favorite resting place for travelers of the Red River Oxcart Trail, a 400 mile path from Winnipeg to St. Paul. For many years, the resting place was called “Ga-ia-wa-wan-gag’’ : a Chippewa name meaning, “Lake in which there is a crossing in a sandy place.’’ Settlers, having trouble pronouncing that name, preferred a traveling French priest’s description of the sandy place; he called it “Detroit,’’ using the French word for sand bar. The name stuck. Today, Detroit Lakes — which turned 150 in 2021 — is an important agricultural area; it is also the center of a thriving “412 Lakes’’ tourism district. Besides providing a strong educational system for its residents, Detroit Lakes is home to many different churches, two industrial parks and a variety of retail businesses. Detroit Lakes service organizations include: American Legion (and Auxiliary), Eagles, Jaycees, Kiwanis, Lions, Masons, two Rotary clubs (meeting at breakfast and noon), Shriners, and the VFW and its Auxiliary. FRAZEE
The city of Frazee is located at the junction of Highway 10 and Minnesota State Highway 87, approximately in the center of Becker County’s southernmost border; it is approximately 10 miles southeast of Detroit Lakes; 55 miles east of Fargo, and 195 miles northwest of Minneapolis. Frazee was settled in 1868, earning it the distinction of being the first area settled in Becker County. When the Hobart Depot and Weymouth Hotel moved to Frazee in 1874, the city of Frazee developed quickly. (It was said the food at the Weymouth was so good, that the NP Line scheduled regular stops to partake in its culinary delights.)

The combination of the depot, a lucrative flour mill, and a booming logging industry, Frazee was Becker County’s largest city until the logging “boom’’ fizzled out at the turn of the century. At its peak, however, Frazee’s population climbed a little over 2000 in the late 1880s. Today, Frazee is home to many businesses. OUTLYING COMMUNITIES HITTERDAL, located in Clay County, was incorporated as a village on April 1, 1918, and separated from the townships on May 3, 1919. It is named for a valley and lake in southern Norway. Among the first settlers were several people named Hitterdal. The town was named for Bendt O. Hitterdal, the original town proprietor. The post
office began in 1887; M. J. Solum built a hardware and implement store on the first lot after the townsite was platted in 1896. ULEN, also located in Clay County, was named in honor of Ole Ulen, its first settler. The city of Ulen was established on part of his homestead and was incorporated as a village on Nov. 12, 1896. The post office was established in 1884. WAUBUN, a city in Mahnomen County, has an Ojibwe name, meaning “the east,” “the morning,” and “the twilight of dawn.” It is spelled waban in Baraga’s Dictionary, and wabun by Longfellow in “The Song of Hiawatha,” with definition as the east wind. The city was incorporated as a village on Dec. 18, 1907. When the Soo Line built through the county in 1903-4, the general manager, Pennington, and his chief engineer, Thomas Green, named the stations as they moved the line north; all towns on the reservation had to have Indian names. The post office for this community was established in 1905 as Bement, changing to Waubun in 1906. PERHAM, located in Otter Tail County, is named after Josiah Perham, the first

President of the Northern Pacific Railroad. The railroad arrived in Otter Tail County in 1871. A mercantile store was erected on the north side of the tracks the next year and Perham has been prospering ever since. Perham currently boasts of a state- of-the-art community fitness and recreation center; a 27-hole, championship golf course. It is also the center for surrounding agriculture and tourism. VERGAS, located in Otter Tail County, is known as the “Home of the Loon,” the Minnesota State Bird. There is a giant 20 foot replica of the State Bird erected on the shore of Long Lake, in the center of City Park, which is also home to a public beach and picnic area. There are 25 lakes within a five-mile radius of Vergas. The community’s present name comes from one of four in the “V” series used to designate Soo Line sleeping cars that traveled between Minneapolis and Winnipeg. The post office began as Candor in 1904, the railroad station was Vergas, and the townsite was Altona, all names changing to Vergas in 1903. The community has a well- known bar and grill, a café, grocery store and a supper club just outside of town.

Home & Community Based Services
MnCHOICES Assessment: A person of any age with a disability or in need of long-term services and supports may request an assessment. MnCHOICES uses a person-centered approach to help you make decisions about your long-term services and supports. It assesses your general health, your ability to take care of routine daily tasks and any help you may receive from family and friends. This assessment is free with a certified assessor and when complete, you will receive a community support plan. The community support plan provides a summary of what the assessor discovered through the assessment process and identifies next steps based on your needs. This assessment determines eligibility for many programs including PCA. Developmental Disability Services: County funded services such as respite care and employment support are available for qualifying individuals in addition to case
management and other state and federally funded programs. All services promote self-sufficiency, independence, and community integration to people with developmental disabilities or related conditions. Eligibility for these services is determined with a MnCHOICES assessment. Long Term Care: People with disabilities or older Minnesotans who need certain levels of care may qualify for waiver or Alternative Care programs. These programs are available to people who choose to reside in the community and meet eligibility criteria. Eligibility is determined by a MnCHOICES assessment. Services for Seniors: Case management is available for qualified seniors to help them stay in their homes as long as possible and provide support if facility care is needed. Eligibility for these services is determined through a MnCHOICES assessment.
