Grandstand and Big Tent events set to entertain Anna Schumacher

aschumacher@dlnewspapers.com

The Becker County Fair will be kicking off festivities on July 27th this year and promises to be a great deal of fun. In fact, fair manager Bob Sonnenberg says it will be the “best fair yet”. Grandstand events for this year include the annual Miss Becker County Fair pageant and two demo derbies. There are also multiple performances that will

be going on during the fair under the Big Tent. Grandstand events will begin on July 28 with the crowning of Miss Becker County Fair at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the pageant are $8.00. The next night, Friday the 29th, the ever popular demolition derby for compact cars, vans, compact trucks, and chain and go pickups will be going on at 7 p.m. On Saturday, July 30, a demolition derby for stock cars and welded hard cars

will be held at 7 pm in the Grandstand. For both demolition derbies, adult tickets are $8.00 and tickets for kids 12 and under are $5.00. Every night after the Grandstand events, there will be a button drawing for lots of great prizes. Buttons can be bought for $2 from a board member or from the fair office during the fair. This year’s biggest prize are tickets to WeFest. Grandstand to page 8 ➤

Getting ready for showtime

Owners have sweat equity into these babies Keith Sonnenberg, vice president of the Becker County Fair and reigning manager of the barns at the fair, has just started receiving numbers for animal showings at the 2016 fair and said with good humor, “It’s going to be a barnful this year.” Sonnenberg has already received entries for about 90 head of beef, 70 head of dairy, almost 70 hogs, 60 poultry, 50 sheep, and a whopping 190 rabbits. And he’s still waiting for more! With this many entrants, it’s sure to be

a tough competition for animal showers highlighted by excellent showmanship and well cared for animals. Showing animals is not as easy as one may think. Most showmen have to decide on what species of animal they are going to show in October, get a hold of an animal by February and then prepare for the fair until July. Julie Yliniemi, leader of the Height of Land 69ers 4-H club, said that the work varies from species to species but is time consuming no matter what kind of animal is being shown. For example, poultry must originate from a certified hatchery to prevent the

Becker County Fair 2016 spread of disease. Horses must be vaccinated against various diseases to be considered for competition. To help competitor’s get ready for the County Fair, 4-H will be hosting a workshop for those showing market animals on the Saturday before the fair. There are three sections of competition: 4-H, FFA, and Open Class. Members of 4-H and FFA compete within their clubs that are usually reserved for young people, while Open Class competition is for anyone residing in Becker County or adjacent counties. Preparing animals for showing takes dedication and a lot of hard work. Showmen must feed the animals according to what they want their animals to look like for their competition class, horned animals have to be dehorned, animals’ fur

and hooves must be clipped down to certain standards, and animals have to be taught how to be led in a showing. And all that work is just preliminary! In the week leading up to the fair, animals must be tattooed or tagged according to their competition class, weighed in to be placed in a weight category, and given a final grooming and washing session. Sound like a lot of work? It is. Sonnenberg estimates that most showmen will spend an hour or two a day preparing their animals in the winter and spring months and then around three hours a day in the weeks leading up to the fair. But all the work that showmen put in to get their animals ready for the fair is for good reason. Yliniemi stresses that taking care of

these animals helps kids in 4-H to “develop life learning skills like responsibility and how to fill out paperwork”. Besides gaining valuable life skills, competitors also get a shot at moving on to the state level. The top two in each competition class move on to compete at the Great Minnesotan Get-Together: the State Fair. Showmens’ chances at moving on to the next level depends on the competition at the County level. Considering the sheer number of competitors, any animal and showman pair moving on to state will be welldeserving. Barns will be open at the County Fair each day of the fair, with competitions taking place at their designated times. For more information on the schedule, please visit beckercountyfair.tripod.com.

animals are shown in three sections of competition: 4-H, FFA and Open Class. Owners prepare to show their animals long before the Becker County Fair even begins, feeding them according to what they want their animals to look like for their particular competition class, dehorning them, clipping hooves and fur and working with them on how to be property led for show. Barns are open at the fair every day fo the fair, with competitions taking place at different times and days.

Once again, the Becker County Fair will be holding two nights of demolition derbies. The derbies prove one of the most popular events at the fair, pulling in big crowds every year. Co-chairs of the derbies, Travis Schauer and Matt Moore, hope that this year will be just as successful.

The first derby begins at 7 p.m. on Friday the 28th in the Grandstand. There will be around 20 entries for the compact car derby, and 5 to 10 entries for the van and compact truck group. The chain-and-go pickup derby, which is a team event, will be held that night as well. On Saturday night, again at 7 p.m., the second night of demolition derbies will begin. The 4-H club makes its beauty mark on the fair Mattie Hjelseth

mhjelseth@dlnewspapers.com

Members of the 4-H club in Detroit Lakes are rolling up their sleeves to help get the Becker County Fair all prettied-up. Fair Beautification, a project the 4-H’ers are working on, are helping the fair board make the grounds more aesthetically pleasing this year. Donna Geiser, a 4-H coordinator, says “it’s a good mesh between 4-H and the fair board to help each other out and make the fair better, for not only 4-H but also the public.” Many members of the 4-H club are painting trash cans and fences as part of community service to make the fairgrounds shine.

Kids to parents, all the way up to grandparents, are joining in on the action. 4-H is the only organization, other than churches, that involves everybody; it is a “family affair” said coordinator Julie Yliniemi. Members of the club say they enjoy being in 4-H and having their favorite project for the fair. Geiser says her favorite part about the club is how the 4-H program is “so family orientated.” A four-year member of the club, Faith Christensen can’t choose her favorite thing about being in the program, saying her favorite is “everything, just being at the fair the whole week.” While her brother Blake, who is the president of 4-H, says his favorite

Members of the 4-H are painting their trash cans, getting ready for the Becker County Fair. Faith Pijlaja, below, paints a pig on her teams trash can for the Fair Beautification project. The project is designed to help make the fairgrounds more appealing to fairgoers, as they paint their own designs and styles on the cans. Project coordinators called this a “family affair”, as people of all ages got involved in the painting.

Becker County Fair 2016 These helpers include bussers, cooks, dishwashers, or order takers. The profit from the kitchen goes back into the 4-H program to help with expenses for the members and their projects. It just got approved that the 4-H kitchen will be serving three different family and cafeteria-style hot meals each day during the fair. While Thursday they will be serving pork, Friday is turkey and Saturday is roast beef. Yliniemi excitingly says “make sure to come and check it out!”

part about holding the title is “getting to teach other people about what to do and how to do things so they learn.” Yliniemi says her favorite part is “seeing the kids learn and grow in their projects, and how the program is teaching them (the members of 4-H) life learning skills that they can take in their future.” The 4-H club also has a food stand committee. This food kitchen is a volunteer project where “everyone helps”, depending on the age Yliniemi says.
