By Marie Johnson mtjohnson@dlnewspapers.com It’s one of the most anticipated events of the summer. From heart-racing rides to mouth-watering food, barns full of animals to tents full of entertainment, and kids games to ag awards, the fair encompasses everything a good community celebration should. Now in its 126th year, the Becker County Fair is a time-honored tradition that takes place every summer at the fairgrounds in Detroit Lakes. Typically held in July, it’s happening later than usual this year, August 7-10. Fair Board President Keith Sonnenberg said the later date was necessary in order to keep all the same great rides and concessions as before, without having the fair fall on the same busy weekend as WE Fest. “The carnivals go from Memorial Day to Labor
Day, and somehow everything got pushed back a week this year,” Sonnenberg says. “So we were a week later, which would have landed on WE Fest, so we moved back one more week.” The later date may conflict with some kids’ schedules, such as those who are starting football practices, or are heading back to college, but Sonnenberg thinks the overall impact should be minimal. “I’m hoping for a very good fair,” he says. “A nice, warm fair.” This year’s fair will feature all the same rides, foods, games, exhibits and shows as always, plus some new additions. Sonnenberg says there’ll be a few extra rides for kids this year, as well as four or five additional games for people to play. There’ll be some new food options, as well, and at least as many 4-H exhibits as last year, if not more.

The Animals Fun new ways to see, pet and learn By Marie Johnson mtjohnson@dlnewspapers.com
There will be some new opportunities to see, pet and learn about animals at this year’s fair. In an effort to more actively inform the public about farm animals — their anatomy, their behaviors, what it takes to care for them, etc. — 4-H kids will be offering short demonstrations about their goats, pigs, cows, ducks, rabbits and other critters, at various times throughout the fair. “We’re setting up an area within the fairgrounds where kids can bring an animal out (of the barn) and demonstrate... how to give a chicken a bath, for example, or just to let people touch or pet the animal. People can ask questions… it’ll be open-ended,” says Gina Schauer, a program coordinator for Becker County 4-H. “We’re trying to find more ways for
our youth to interact with the general fairgoers,” she explains. “We’re trying to get people to know the animals a little bit more than just by walking through the barn.” Offering demonstrations is a voluntary activity for the 4-Hers, so there’s no set schedule or definite number of demonstrations that will be offered. Fairgoers should just watch out for them as they walk around the animal areas. Also new this year will be an ag education booth manned by Minnesota Ag Ambassador Myla Lewis, offering information and interactive games to kids and other fairgoers. Located behind the DNR Building, Lewis will be at the booth on Friday, Aug. 9 (Kids Day), at 1:30 p.m. At press time, games weren’t set in stone yet, but it was likely there’d be some sort of scavenger hunt for kids, with posters • FREE Tank Delivery • FREE Tank Maintenance • 25 Feet of FREE Copper Tubing • FREE Tank Leasing with Yearly Minimum Gallons • Competitive Pricing • 24-Hour Emergency Service

spread out around the fair. “Again, providing more of that interaction with the people that come to watch the fair,” says Schauer. According to Leigh Edwards, who is also a program coordinator for Becker County 4-H, the local 4-H program has “grown exponentially” in recent years. Because of this, the number of animal and other exhibits entered into the fair continues to grow, as well. It’s expected that the barns will be full again this year. The fair schedule calls for rabbit
judging on Wednesday morning, with poultry judging that afternoon and the swine show that evening. A market goat, sheep show and lamb lead will take place Thursday morning, followed by an open class beef show. A horse show, dairy goat show and open class dairy show will all happen Friday morning. Saturday morning, there’ll be a round robin showmanship contest and livestock auction. See the schedule for specific times and locations.

2019 FAIR From Page 1
Also new this year will be the addition of live 4-H animal demonstrations, such as how to brush a horse. The demos are designed to help fairgoers learn more about farm animals and what it takes to care for them. 4-H organizers say they’re trying to find more ways for 4-H youth to interact with other fairgoers. As always, there’ll be plenty of entertainment going on under the Big Tent and at the Grandstand, with live music, shows for kids, demo derbies, Becker County Sheriff K9 demonstrations, and lots more. There’ll be Automotive Barrel Racing, too — a new thing that fair organizers think will go over well here. Taking place at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7 at the Grandstand, Automotive Barrel Racing is a lot like traditional barrel racing, but with automobiles instead of horses. There’ll be two or three barrels set up around the track, and vehicles will have to make multiple turns around the barrels, as fast as they can while being timed. Different classes of vehicles will be racing, Sonnenberg says, including “some demo cars, people who bring their cars off the street… any kind of car. It’s at the demo derby track, a nice, flat track.” He says the Fair Board heard about Automotive Barrel Racing after another fair in southern Minnesota tried it. They thought it’d be a good fit for the Becker County Fair, since there are always such big crowds at the demo derbies here. Most of the entries in the barrel races will be local.

A former chief of police in Detroit Lakes, Tim Eggebraaten has been "off duty" since 1992, and has been taking his musical talent to the streets ever since. Eggebraaten makes multiple appearances all over the area every year. He'll be performing under the Big Tent on Friday, Aug. 9 at 7 p.m.
“It’s definitely a brand new thing around here,” Sonnenberg says. “We’re not charging, it’s an open gate. So we’ll see how it goes.” The fire department will be on hand in case of any vehicle fires or flips. Other entertainment this year will include live music for all ages by local favorites Dan Holt, Mike Hokanson, Tim Eggebraaten, the Kris Frost and Kim Softing Band, Bruce Nelson, Ethel Duenow and the Minnesota-based 34th Infantry Division Band. For kids, there’s a stunt juggler, ventriloquist, and “George of the Jungle” shows. The tractor parade will return for its 11th year, with this year’s featured tractor being the antique Massey-Harris tractors. The tractors will leave Adkin’s equipment, on Richwood Road,

BECKER COUNTY FAIR AUGUST 7-10, 2019
The Exhibits From flowers to fine arts, cattle to needlework By Marie Johnson mtjohnson@dlnewspapers.com The Becker County Fair is the penultimate place for locals to show off their gardening, homemaking, sewing, animal care and other skills — and for the best of the best, it’s a direct route to competition at the Minnesota State Fair. This year, as in the past, exhibit entries will span a wide and diverse array of categories, from fruits and vegetables to fine arts, cattle to needlework. Fairgoers will see displays of original artwork and photography, homemade bars and cookies, floral arrangements, patchwork quilts, clothing and much, much more — all products of the imaginations, hard work and dedication of local folks of all ages, especially kids in 4-H and FFA. Leigh Edwards, a program coordinator
for Becker County 4-H, said the 4-H Performing Arts Show will be returning to the fair this year, after a hiatus. As many as 15 kids will be performing under the Big Tent at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 10, for this talent competition. Performances could include singing, dancing, speech or drama, among other possibilities. “It’s the first year in awhile that we’re offering this,” Edwards says. “It used to be done in the past but it kind of fell by the wayside, but now we’re trying to reinvigorate it. This is judged like anything else and the kids have the chance to go on to the State Fair.” Fairgoers who like to see this kind of local talent in action may also be interested in attending the 4-H Fashion Revue, which also takes place on Saturday under the Big Tent, starting at 12:30 p.m. Edwards describes the revue

as a fashion show, with kids who’ve made their own clothing or put together unique outfits for the fair modeling their creations in front of an audience. For most exhibit divisions, Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Ribbons are awarded to the exhibits judged to be the best in their class. Some divisions offer
additional ribbons and other prizes. See the schedule of events for additional information on exhibit entries and judging times, or see the 2019 Becker County Fair Premium book (available in print or online at www. dl-online.com — click on the “Extra Extra” link).

ANIMALS From Page 2
The livestock auction, which starts at 9 a.m. in the Amanda Foltz Arena, will be immediately followed by a fun new event, Schauer says, which will give 4-H kids a chance to see their parents in action in the ring. “We’re doing Adult Showmanship after the auction,” Schauer says. “4-Hers can nominate their parents or other adults to show their animals (beef only in this first year). That could be entertaining to watch.” The event is a fundraiser for the livestock program. Kids pay $2 to nominate an adult, and adults can only get out of it by donating $5. Another entertaining animal event to watch this year, Leigh says, will be the Drill Team routines at the Horse Arena on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 11:30 a.m. Two local teams of five and six kids
each will perform musical routines on horseback. One team has a 1980s theme, and another a patriotic theme. Both teams are very good, according to Leigh: one of them won at the state level last year, and the other is new but both teams got the highest points in their class at a recent regional competition. “We’re really hoping people will see it,” she says of the routines. “It’s like a dance routine, but on horses, so they run with them, they do patterns… It’s really entertaining. It’s so cool.” For those who look forward to visiting the Children’s Barn every year, the barn will be open from about 8 a.m. every morning until about a half-hour after the last grandstand event closes, every day of the fair. Fair Board President Keith Sonnenberg says the barn’s floor will be cemented this year, so fairgoers can more easily get around in there, especially people with strollers.

Their FAIR share of fun Favorite memories from fairgoers
So much to remember about the fair back then, as it was the highlight of our summer. Mr. Paulson, our next door neighbor, always entered his flowers and came home with blue ribbons. My grandmother entered her canned jam. I would become an expert at throwing dimes on the small plates and won two parakeets — which I named Nip and Tuck.
Being a local native of DL, the fair was so exciting — the barns, the bingo, the milk booth, the DNR Building…

Their FAIR share of fun Favorite memories from fairgoers
I grew up in DL. I couldn't wait for the carnival to come into town so I could ride the Tilt-A-Whirl.
Growing up in Detroit Lakes...the fair marked the end of the summer and was where we ran into friends from school that you maybe hadn’t seen all summer. And that got me excited for school to start. Now, having a child of my own, I see the fair means the same thing to him… Wonderful memories at the fairground!
