A Year Like No Other Paused by the pandemic, social activities look a little different these days; Find out what events are happening around Becker County at dl-online.com or visitdetroitlakes.com

By Vicki Gerdes | vgerdes@dlnewspapers.com

You may have noticed that this year’s Guide to Becker County does not include a Calendar of Events, or the winners of our annual photo contest — because we didn’t have one. These changes, as is the case with so many things that happened — or didn’t happen — in 2020, are a direct result of the coronavirus pandemic. State-issued pandemic safety guidelines are ever-changing, and this means that most of the popular events taking place annually in the lakes area are in a state of limbo as this edition of the Guide goes to press (which is why certain events have no dates listed). Be 6 | 2021 GUIDE TO BECKER COUNTY

sure to check out our website, dl-online.com, or the calendar of events at the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce website (visitdetroitlakes. com) for updates as the year progresses. But just because there is a dearth of scheduled events doesn’t mean nothing is happening. Winter, spring, summer or fall, the lakes area plays host to a wide variety of entertaining opportunities for enjoying the arts, the outdoors and of course, our beautiful lakes and rivers. There are also lots of quaint shopping boutiques and stores as well as several coffee shops for you to stop, rest and meet some friends for a hot

cup of java, espresso or an iced beverage of your choice — and some of them have some pretty tasty food as well.

A winter wonderland

During the winter, a village of fish houses takes over both Big and Little Detroit lakes, and snowmobilers will find over 250 miles of groomed trails winding their way through the woods and fields of Becker County. At the 200-acre Detroit Mountain Recreation Area (www.detroitmountain.com), located just a few short miles southeast of Detroit Lakes, guests can enjoy a full range of winter activities,

from downhill and cross country skiing to tubing, fat tire biking and even a visit to their terrain park to try out your best snowboarding and skiing tricks. Maplelag Resort (www.maplelag. com), located between Callaway and Richwood, offers almost 45 miles of cross country skiing and snowshoeing trails, an ice skating rink and sliding hill. Many of those trails remain open after the snow has melted,l for mountain biking enthusiasts to enjoy Other area resorts offering snowmobiling, ice fishing, skiing and snowshoeing activities during the winter months include Rainbow Resort near Waubun (www.rainbowresort.com), Pinehurst Resort outside Naytahwaush (www.pinehurstmn.com) and Ice Cracking Lodge & Resort (www.icecrackinglodge.com) in rural Ponsford.

1: Stores around the county have stayed open during the pandemic, for the most part, but with expanded health and safety rules in place -- such as the use of face masks. 2: Businesses have gotten creative and added new services in order to serve customers best during social distancing. Hub 41 restaurant, for example, started offering curbside pickup and delivery during the statewide shutdown last spring. 3: Volunteers and charitable endeavors were crucial during the statewide shutdown in the spring of 2020. Pictured here is Detroit Lakes Police Chief Steven Todd delivering a box of essential items to the home of a highrisk community member. 4: School classrooms have at times sat empty during the pandemic. At the time of this publication in February 2021, however, all students in the Detroit Lakes School District were back to fulltime, in-person learning. 5: A group of local Tai Chi students began meeting for lessons outdoors.

which will take place on May 8 this year. Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz will be paying a visit to our neighbors in Otter Tail County for the 2021 Governor’s Fishing Opener weekend, which takes place May 6-9. Will the weather be friendly for anglers? Will the boat motor start? Will the bass and walleyes bite? Is there enough bait? Those questions will once again be on the minds of anglers and bait dealers as they ready for the season. Most answers won’t be known until shortly after Friday turns into Saturday at the stroke of midnight, when anglers can get onto their favorite lakes once more — and legally keep the northern pike, bass, walleyes and lake trout they catch. Spring months can also find lakes area residents and visitors alike looking through the treetops for that one-of-a kind bird. The 23rd Annual Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds, which was postponed from 2020 to 2021, is tentatively scheduled for May 20-22. Visit the festival’s Facebook page, call 800-5423992 (toll free) or contact the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce

at dlchamber@VisitDetroitLakes.com for the latest information on this popular event. Summer, which doubles the population of Detroit Lakes each year, brings iconic celebrations like the Northwest Water Carnival (www.dljaycees.com/ water-carnival-3), which has been hosted by the Detroit Lakes Jaycees for over eight decades now, as well as the Becker County Fair (beckercountyfair. com), celebrating its 127th anniversary in 2021, and the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament (pine2palmgolf.com), established 89 years ago.

The return of WE Fest

The granddaddy of all Minnesota music festivals, WE Fest, returns to Detroit Lakes and the Soo Pass Ranch on Aug. 5-7, after a one-year absence. New owners Live Nation and their Minnesota-based partner, Matt Mithun, are planning a renaissance for the 37-yearold country music festival that includes a return to its roots as a locally owned and operated event. “We want to kind of bring back that personal touch ... to make it a commu-

nity event again,” Mithun said. “We definitely want to hire locally. The partnerships and interaction with the community are a very important part of it (the festival).” Though details were still forthcoming as of the publication of this magazine, Mithun noted that the Soo Pass Ranch would be undergoing a few upgrades in anticipation of WE Fest’s return. “There are a number of things we want to do to enhance the site,” he said, adding that they plan to make improvements to the buildings, the site layout, and the overall concert experience. “There are some things we’ll be doing for 2020-21, and some for 2021-22. I’ll be happy to share more of those details as we develop them in the coming months.” Mithun’s family has owned the 400acre ranch just south of Detroit Lakes for most of the festival’s 37-year run at the site, which made it a natural fit for him to partner with Live Nation, the festival’s new owners, to handle the production side of the three-day annual event.

Our caring, professional staff provide rich learning experiences that spark curiosity, encourage healthy lifestyles, support academic success and foster good character and leadership. The Club continued offering critical and beneficial services and programs to this community throughout COVID closures. • 40 members received full-day virtual learning support • 42,000+ FREE meals and snacks were served curbside • 200 families received wellness checks • 159 school-preparedness bundles were distributed • 99 children received educational kits • 287 kits for in-home activities were distributed • Much more!

“My dad bought the Soo Pass 35 years ago, just a couple of years after the festival started,” Mithun said, “so we’ve been involved with it for a long time. Festival headliners Blake Shelton, Dierks Bentley and Florida Georgia Line were announced shortly before this edition of the Guide went to press. The festival website, wefest.com, will have all the latest additions to the music lineup, as well as available concert and camping ticket options for visitors to choose from. “We’re very excited to be having another festival, and we look forward to welcoming people back,” Mithun said.

Explore the lakes area and its history

August is also slated to mark the return of Detroit Lakes’ annual Street Faire at the Lakes (Aug. 13-14), after a one-year absence. In addition, there endless hiking, biking, swimming, boating and of course, golfing opportunities available for visitors at any time, from Memorial Day to Labor Day and on into the fall months. Detroit Lakes boasts 412 lakes within 25 miles, including two inside its city limits — Big and Little Detroit — as well as a mile-long city beach that is one of the community’s biggest summer attractions. In addition, Becker County boasts more than a half dozen golf courses, with most of them to be found within a 20-minute drive of Detroit Lakes. As previously mentioned, nearby Dunton Locks and Sucker Creek provide plenty of opportunities for hiking and exploring, as do the Tamarac and Hamden Slough national wildlife refuges. Maplewood and Itasca state parks are also just a short drive or bike ride away. History buffs may want to stroll through the Veterans Memorial Park in downtown Detroit Lakes (at the junction of Washington Avenue and Highway 10), which contains plaques and monuments celebrating area war veterans past and present; the Grand Army of the Republic Park located just a couple blocks north of Highway 10 on Washington Avenue, which is one of just a handful of GAR parks still in existence across the USA; and Oak Grove Cemetery, located just north of town on Highway 59, which boasts a 10 | 2021 GUIDE TO BECKER COUNTY

And be sure to check out the Becker County Museum at 714 Summit Avenue (www.beckercountyhistory.org) — where you can view the plans for the new museum building, scheduled to begin construction this spring, then explore all of the museum’s historic artifacts and interactive exhibits on display. Richwood Winery, located just to the east of the tiny hamlet of Richwood and 17 miles north of Detroit Lakes, offers opportunities for guests to sample a variety of vintages while relaxing in the bucolic setting. The winery has live music every weekend through the sum-

mer months, and also hosts several fun events including the Summer Solstice Festival, Toast to Tamarac (a benefit for the nearby Refuge hosted by the Friends of Tamarac); and the Grape Stomp, which has become a fall tradition. Dates for these events in 2021 are still to be announced due to the pandemic; visit richwoodwinery.com or check out their Facebook page for updates. Labor Day weekend brings two popular area events, the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion (Sept. 3-6), which has been bringing steam engine lovers and old-school farming enthusiasts to the tiny community of Rollag (www.rollag.com) for more than six

decades now, and the Laddies Loppet Mountain Bike Stage Race at Maplelag (maplelag.com), which will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2021, after the 2020 event was canceled due to COVID-19.

Fall festivals & leaf peeping

Speaking of Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, the nature area typically plays host to well over 3,000 area grade school students between September and May, though most of these activities were suspended in 2020 after schools shifted to online and hybrid learning plans in the wake of the pandemic. The Refuge’s environmental education facility, the Discovery Center, officially opened to the public in July 2015, and offers both indoor and outdoor learning opportunities with a staff of experienced and well trained volunteers from the Friends organization. Tamarac also hosts annual events like the fall festival, where guests are invited to explore the confines of the Refuge by bus, by car or on foot, as well as participating in a series of organized, environmentally-themed activities for the

whole family — all free of charge. Food, memorabilia and other amenities are available for purchase at the festival site as well as in the gift shop at the environmentally friendly Visitor’s Center, which was renovated in 2014 to incorporate geothermal heating and solar power. In addition, fall brings the 25th Annual Dick Beardsley Run and Damien Fall Home Tour in Detroit Lakes, along with Lake Park’s popular Pumpkin Fest and the Hairy Man 5K in Vergas, an homage to the legendary, Bigfoot-like Hairy Man that is said to wander the Vergas trails at night. And that’s not even mentioning Leaf Days at Maplewood State Park, along with the many other opportunities for viewing the area’s beautiful fall colors in September and October. As fall gives way to winter, the Historic Holmes Theatre’s (www.dlccc. org/holmes-theatre.html) new season ramps up with its annual Holmes Art Show in November, which brings dozens of area artisans to the Holmes Ballroom during the day, while offering a variety of live music in the main theater at night.

Spend your holidays at the lakes

Come Thanksgiving weekend, Holy Rosary Church in Detroit Lakes hosts its annual Community Feast on Thanksgiving Day, which is also the opening day of Lake Park’s annual Parade of Trees at the American Legion, running through the following Sunday, Nov. 29. The day after Thanksgiving, the shopping extravaganza usually referred to as Black Friday is actually “White Friday” at Detroit Mountain, as the winter recreation facility begins another season. The following Monday, Detroit Lakes is all set to open its holiday shopping season with Santa’s Grand Parade of Lights. December brings a plethora of seasonal celebrations both public and private to the lakes area, with events like Rock & Roll Christmas at the Holmes and the New Years Eve Bash at the Detroit Lakes Community & Cultural Center among the usual holiday fare. As the local Chamber of Commerce likes to say, it’s all here, all year.

AUDUBON

The city of Audubon is located on Highway 10 approximately 40 miles east of Fargo, ND, and 210 miles northwest of Minneapolis, MN. Situated in the southwest corner of Becker County, it developed as a result of the 1871 expansion of the Northern Pacific Railroad. Established in 1872, Audubon was settled mainly by farmers of Scandinavian descent. The town was named after the great American naturalist and artist, James J. Audubon. During an early tour of the “Audubon’’ branch of the NP line, a passenger, Audubon’s niece, commented on the beauty of the lily- covered prairie and asked that if a railroad station were ever built there, that it be named after her uncle. While searching for a township name, the

Audubon name suggestion seemed to stick, and on Jan. 2, 1881, it became the official town name. Today, Audubon is home to Lake Park-Audubon Elementary School, Team Industries, Orton’s convenience store, Aurochs Veterinary Service, JCS Cabinetry & Design, Country Wood Products, FM Recreational, TBS Express, P51, TK Auto, Keller Dieseland and Audubon Upholstery. Audubon also maintains a post office, a co-op elevator, the Audubon Liquor Store, and a meat market, Audubon Meats, Inc., as well as three churches: First Lutheran, Immanuel Lutheran and Church of the Living God. CALLAWAY

Callaway is located about 12 miles north of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59, approximately 45 air miles east of Fargo. It’s situated in Becker’s northwest corner, along the Soo Line Railroad’s “Glenwood route’’ — a section of track between Winnipeg and Minneapolis. The small farming communities of Richwood and Westbury lie within a 5 mile radius of Callaway. As the Soo Line pushed northward in 1903, the Callaway community developed. Callaway’s rich farmland attracted many early Scandinavian settlers who were interested in farming its fertile tracts of land. Today, agriculture remains Callaway’s main economic resource, but the city is also home to an Event Center, as well as

DETROIT LAKES

Detroit Lakes was originally home of the Sioux, until the Chippewa pushed them westward. During the mid 1800s, Detroit Lakes was a favorite resting place for travelers of the Red River Oxcart Trail, a 400 mile path from Winnipeg to St. Paul. For many years, the resting place was called “Ga-ia-wa-wan-gag’’ : a Chippewa name meaning, “Lake in which there is a crossing in a sandy place.’’ Settlers, having trouble pronouncing that name, preferred a traveling French priest’s description of the sandy place; he called it “Detroit,’’ using the French word for sand bar. The name stuck. Today, Detroit Lakes is an important agricultural area; it is also the center of a thriving “412 Lakes’’ tourism district. Besides providing a strong educational system for its residents, Detroit Lakes is home to many different church-

es, two industrial parks and a variety of retail businesses. Detroit Lakes service organizations include: American Legion (and Auxiliary), Eagles, Jaycees, Kiwanis, Lions, Masons, two Rotary clubs, and the VFW and its Auxiliary. The City of Detroit Lakes turns 150 years old in 2021, watch the www.dl150.com website for updates and event information through the year. Frazee was settled in 1868, earning it the distinction of being the first area settled in Becker County. When the Hobart Depot and Weymouth Hotel moved to Frazee in 1874, the city of Frazee developed quickly. (It was said the food at the Weymouth was so good, that the NP Line scheduled regular stops to partake in its culinary delights.) The combination of the depot, a lucrative flour mill, and a booming logging industry, Frazee was Becker County’s largest city until the logging “boom’’ fizzled out at the turn of the century. At its peak, however, Frazee’s population climbed a little over 2000 in the late 1880s. Today, Frazee is home to many businesses. Daggett Trucking, the Frazee Municipal Liquor Store, Frazee Event Center, Ketter’s Meat Market, O.K. Lumber, Frazee Family Foods and Seip Drug are just a few examples of Frazee’s thriving business district. The city of Lake Park is located on Highway 10 approximately 35 miles east of Fargo and 215 miles northwest of Minneapolis. With gentle rolling hills and an elevation of 1270 ft., Lake Park is a fertile farm area producing grain,

potatoes, and livestock. Lake Park was named for a beautiful lake which used to be located on the original townsite. In the early 1870s, this lake was drained, however, to allow for the building of the NP Railroad. Although the lake was lost forever, the railroad stimulated Lake Park’s growth as settlers took advantage of its easy transportation to the region. Today, Lake Park is home to many area businesses. Besides a health clinic, community cooperative, hair salon, grocery store, laundromat, municipal liquor store, bank, city center, and public pool, the Lake Park community includes a variety of churches, including St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Lake Park Lutheran Church and Eksjo Lutheran Church. TWO INLETS

Two Inlets is located on Becker County’s eastern border. Nestled quietly in Becker’s forest district, it is approximately 10 miles north of Osage and 12 miles northeast of Ponsford on County Road 44. The community of White Earth is located within the White Earth Indian Reservation. It is located approximately 22 miles north of Detroit Lakes at the intersection of County Road 23 and Minnesota Hwy. 224. The village of White Earth is governed by a community council. WAUBUN, a city in Mahnomen County, has an Ojibwe name, meaning “the east,” “the morning,” and “the twilight of dawn.” It is spelled waban in Baraga’s Dictionary, and wabun by Longfellow in “The Song of Hiawatha,” with definition as the east wind. The city was incorporated as a village on Dec. 18, 1907. When the Soo Line built through the county in 1903-4, the general manager, Pennington, and his chief engineer, Thomas Green, named the stations as they moved the line north; all towns on the reservation had to have Indian names. The post office for this community was established in 1905 as Bement, changing to Waubun in 1906. PERHAM, located in Otter Tail County, is named after Josiah Perham, the first President of the

Northern Pacific Railroad. The railroad arrived in Otter Tail County in 1871. A mercantile store was erected on the north side of the tracks the next year and Perham has been prospering ever since. Perham currently boasts of a state- of-the-art community fitness and recreation center; a 27-hole, championship golf course. It is also the center for surrounding agriculture and tourism. VERGAS, located in Otter Tail County, is known as the “Home of the Loon,” the Minnesota State Bird. There is a giant 20 foot replica of the State Bird erected on the shore of Long Lake, in the center of City Park, which is also home to a public beach and picnic area. There are 25 lakes within a five-mile radius of Vergas. The community’s present name comes from one of four in the “V” series used to designate Soo Line sleeping cars that traveled between Minneapolis and Winnipeg. The post office began as Candor in 1904, the railroad station was Vergas, and the townsite was Altona, all names changing to Vergas in 1903. The community has a well- known bar and grill, a café, grocery store and a supper club just outside of town.

OUTLYING COMMUNITIES

HITTERDAL, located in Clay County, was incorporated as a village on April 1, 1918, and separated from the townships on May 3, 1919. It is named for a valley and lake in southern Norway. Among the first settlers were several people named Hitterdal. The town was named for Bendt O. Hitterdal, the original town proprietor. The post office
