Making it anew Home features one-of-a-kind elements
T
he Johnson family cabin on Floyd Lake may be small, but it is packed full of personality and special touches. Julie Johnson grew up coming to her grandparents’ Floyd Lake cabin, and though her grandparents have since passed away, she said she “obviously wanted to be on this lake.” Her parents and aunt and uncle live on Floyd Lake just down the shore from her. In September of 2009, she and her husband, Bud, purchased their cabin from one of Julie’s other uncles and have since turned
it into their own weekend haven. They live in Eagan during the week. It started out with a kitchen remodel and progressed into gutting the cabin and making improvements throughout. The Johnsons knew they had to put in new air conditioning and a furnace, but when they went to do the duct work under the house, there was mounded dirt under it from when the footings were dug. Julie said she and her mom had to go under the house in the crawl space and shovel the dirt out.
That was the beginning of the project that would take longer than originally planned. “My dad was in construction and he was our general contractor,” she said. Julie and Bud come to their two-bedroom, one-bathroom cabin every weekend. They have two grown sons — one lives in Fargo and one in Ohio — who come visit often as well, so they have a guest bedroom and two plush futons in the living room for extra sleeping space. During the remodeling project, Julie said they bought as many American-made products as possible. They also kept the work local — the small amount of work they weren’t already doing themselves. Julie said she’s very much in favor of reusing items she finds, and many are connected to the cabin or family members. For instance, the canoe coffee table in the living room is filled with sand from the beach and several fishing lures that were once Bud’s father’s. Julie created the mirror in the master bedroom with a frame made of small birch tree slices. The “Johnson” sign above the door was created with pictures from the Johnson cabin and shore – like a fish hook for “J” and swimming noodles for the “H.” Many of the lamps throughout the house were old, but the Johnsons rewired them, made new lamp shades and decorated them to make them anew. “I’m into remaking things,” she said.
TOP The living room features a rowboat filled with Bud’s father’s fishing lures, extra sleeping space for visitors and refurbished lamps. ABOVE Julie created the dining room table herself after a couple painting attempts. LEFT Julie also created the living room fireplace with stones from Floyd Lake.

A couple focal points in the house include the living room fireplace and the dining room table, both of which Julie made herself. “All of the rocks are out of the lake,” she said of the fireplace. Julie set the rocks on the back of the wall surrounding the fireplace and then piped the grout between them with a cake decorating bag. She then took a small wire brush to polish each small rock. She said the tedious work was like cleaning teeth. At the base of the fireplace, she planned to pour epoxy to look like lake water over the rocks – which worked perfectly. Her son suggested they put a few minnows in the “water,” but she wasn’t sure they would keep, so they bought fake ones and five minnows can be found after a careful

ABOVE LEFT Julie has started a gnome garden to entertain her young nieces and nephews when they visit. search in the base of the Johnson fireplace. Above the fireplace hangs a mantle made of a birch tree -- Julie says she’s very into birch trees and dragonflies, many of which can be found throughout the house and property. The kitchen table, which seats 10 comfortably for all the family that comes to eat with the Johnsons, was also a project Julie took on with a vision in mind.

LEFT The guest bedroom shows pictures of the Johnson boys growing up and as adults, always fishing from the dock on Floyd Lake. BELOW The Johnsons ended up gutting the existing cabin and redoing the inside to fit their needs. This is the master bedroom.
ABOVE Above the door that heads out to the lake, the Johnsons have their namesake displayed, photographed using items from the cabin, like a bobber for the ‘O’ and fishing rods for the ‘N.’ Their son created the pictures and gave them the sign as a gift.
She found a square table in the house that her aunt always used but it wasn’t as big as she needed. No problem. First, her husband and dad built a new base for the table because the bottom portion of the legs was in bad shape. Next she expanded the size of the table and got to work on the tile she had envisioned for it. “I’m an artist by trade. I get these visions at night,” she said, adding that she usually has to enlist her husband and/ or father to make those visions come to life. She purchased white bisque tiles that had only been fired once so she could paint them. She numbered the back of each tile to make sure they stayed in the same order as they would when affixed to the tabletop. She painted the tiles with various colors by splattering them here and there. She then had the tiles fired, but they didn’t turn out the color she had hoped. (You are unable to tell the color the tile will be as you’re painting it,” she said.
10 FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2013
The colors all look the same gray color until fired. It’s not until it’s fired that the true color will show.) The man who fired the tiles for her said she could paint over them and fire them once again if she didn’t want to start from scratch – though his wife offered to buy the tiles from Julie because she loved the look. Julie gave it another shot, though, and painted them one more time. This time, it turned out perfectly. The uniqueness of the cabin contents assures there will never be another like it. Julie said she’s done with the interior of their lake home “unless my husband let’s me go up,” she said with a laugh, meaning building a second level on the house. “We hope to move here someday, so every time we come up, I slip something else in (the car),” she said.

While the windows make it unique from the outside, it’s the view from the inside that makes it a sight to see. “When we designed this, we’re at the lake, we want to see the lake, not a wall,” Marti Peterson said. And the lake you will certainly see. The entire lake side of the house is made up of windows. The ceiling is filled with sky-
lights. And the house is filled with space. In 1991, Marti and Randy Peterson built a cabin on the property, and three years ago they tore that down and built the house that now exists on the land. Take a few steps in the door and a spacious kitchen and dining room show that the Petersons like to entertain. “You can never have enough cupboards,” Marti said with a laugh. “I do like to cook and it’s a fun thing to come down here.” The Petersons live in Fargo and visit their Cotton Lake home on the weekends.

Also open to the kitchen and dining room is the sitting area with a fireplace and TOP Marti said she worked with a landscaper to have natural looking plants and grasses, with pops of color. television. Marti said there was going to be a three-season porch on the front of the house facing the lake, but instead they decided to enclose it and fill it with windows and skylights instead. The master bedroom also faces the lake, and the windows are just as large as in the living room, letting the sun pour into the room. Marti said she didn’t want a chest of drawers taking up space in the room, so the oversized headboard is filled with drawers on the back side. Upstairs, there are bedrooms for their kids, who still come to the lake house often, and plenty of spare room for watching television and relaxing, complete with their own wet bar and kitchenette area. Despite the spacious four-bedroom, five-bathroom home being classy and tastefully designed and decorated, Marti said it’s still filled with comfort and a laidback feel. “Come in, put your feet up and not have to worry about you can’t put your feet on it. I wanted it to be comfortable.” Marti said she came up with ideas of what she wanted in the house, and then was told what could or could not be done. “Great people guided me along,” she said. “I knew what I like. It’s just over my head. I definitely needed help there.” The stained glass window above the front door is a replica of what is seen out the living room windows. Marti said when she looks out the windows, she sees the lake, the dock and the island, and so the speciallymade stained glass creation depicts that as well. ABOVE The living room features plenty of views of Cotton Lake. Most people around the lake know the house with the circle windows.

Contemporary meets antique in this home
F
or Bev Jacobson, life is a matter of black and white with a splash of accenting colors here and there. Walking through the twin home she and her husband, Jim, live in near Little Floyd Lake, it’s clear she likes things black and white – in a very classy way. “I love to decorate. It’s my passion,” she said. A couple years ago, the Jacobsons decided they wanted a larger home for when their children and grandchildren come to visit.
The upstairs of the twin home had been a model home in the Sunrise on Little Floyd development. While she was off visiting family, her husband found the new home and said they needed to take a look. They liked the extra space and built the basement under it for even more space. The open floor plan upstairs is both welcoming and spacious. Hardwood floors cover the living room, kitchen and dining room. “I’ve always liked the foyer,” she said of the open space.
The upstairs, which also includes the master suite, features large windows, letting the sunlight pour in. “We really like the big windows. We get to see the sunrise and the sunset with the way the house is built,” she said. Bev said her taste in decorating has been described as a mix of contemporary with antique. “It’s kind of a mismatch really,” she said with a laugh. Downstairs, there is a sizable living room, a black and white bathroom and two spare bedrooms. Bev said they plan to put in a fireplace as well but haven’t gotten to that part quite yet. “The lower level is nice for when we have company,” she said. They have four children and 10 grandchildren between the two of them. “That’s why we moved into a bigger place.” She said the downstairs has a nice view of the pine trees on the property, as does the patio out back.
ABOVE The kitchen and dining room are open to the living room as well for an open floor plan upstairs. LEFT The Sunrise on Little Floyd development also features a clubhouse commons area that will be a part of the Damien home Tour as well. It hosts a swimming pool and restrooms, and the day of the tour, there will be refreshments available there.

Regardless of the one-of-a-kind items throughout the house, Carolyn said it’s a house to feel comfortable in. “It’s very well lived in. We have five grandsons.” In the backyard of the house, the Heitkamps enjoy a pond and manmade stream —they pump the water up from the pond to run back down the stream and into the pond. They also have a patio area and fire pit to gather around. “You won’t see another one like it,” Carolyn said of the Heitkamps’ house. She said she had been asked to be on the Damien Home Tour in the past but declined. She agreed to this year though. “I like the idea of what they do with the money,” she said of the organization.

tepping into the stunning great room of Jocelyn and Wayne Tang’s log home, anyone can see the true greatness in the unique wood throughout. Built in 2006, the Tangs had the Floyd Lake log home built with red oak D-logs, meaning the logs are cut in the shape of a capital D. The logs are flat on the inside of the house and rounded on the outside. The flooring was created from reclaimed barn wood. typical smooth boards that line floors in many homes. “My favorite thing in the house is the creaky floor,” Jocelyn said. A company in Menahga provided the logs for the home, the barn wood on the floor came from Fergus Falls, and an Audubon man did all the iron railings in the house. Some of the knotty alder kitchen cabinets have pieces of stained glass windows that came from an old church in North Dakota.
The great room also boasts a grand, rock fireplace. Downstairs is also the master suite with its own deck, a bathroom and the laundry room. Jocelyn said she and her husband drew up the plans themselves of what they wanted their home to look like. In the end, she said it turned out just like they had hoped, except she wishes she had more closet space. “You can never have enough closet space,” she said. Upstairs there are two spare bedrooms and a bathroom – decorated with antique-looking gates — for when their grown children come to visit. There is also a sitting area in the loft, overlooking the living room and a great view of the lake. Jocelyn describes the 2,400-square-foot home as cozy. While it may be fairly sizable, the wood gives it a homey feel and look.

Perfectly cozy
Sisters prove lake living can be affordable
H
aving property along West Lake Drive in the family since 1972, sisters Sonja and Sandra Taves eventually retired from their jobs in Fargo-Moorhead, sold their home there and remodeled their lake home, moving there permanently a couple years ago. When they rebuilt in 2003, they knew what they wanted in the house, but they weren’t necessarily allowed to do it all, thanks to a small lot and city ordinances. So instead of a larger footprint, they built up-
wards. They built a second story, and kept the costs minimal to provide a livable lake house without a bunch of debt tied to it. Sonja said they were debt-free after selling their Moorhead house, so they wanted to stay that way. For instance, they laid the flooring themselves. And the countertops, they said, didn’t have to be granite. The dining room chairs were picked up at a motel liquidation sale and then refurbished. The table is about 100 years old.
“We wanted it cabiny, old farmhouse, mostly lakey,” Sonja said of the feel to their home. And, they agree, they can always do more in the future if they want, but this way, they have no debt. The cozy but very light and comfortable house – it’s 1,200 square feet — has a fireplace in the living room, two bedrooms, office space and a bathroom upstairs and plenty of patio space to watch the sun rise over Detroit Lake. “It’s an oversized fish house,” Sandra said with a laugh. Sonja said it’s also considered the lighthouse because it’s so much taller than the other houses around it. In fact, when Sandra lays in bed on the second level and look out the window, it looks like she is floating on the lake because that’s all that can be seen out the window. The sisters used a couple of the windows from the old cabin as doors to their kitchen pantry and bathroom closet. FACING PAGE the kitchen and dining room of the taves home is bright and colorful and the perfect size for two. toP the taves home features a rock fireplace in the living room and a view of Detroit Lake. rIGHt When they wanted to make home improvements, the sisters couldn’t expand the footprint, so they built up. FAr LEFt the stairwell is open and light, showing the amazing height of the house. Sonja said the house looks like a lighthouse because it’s taller than most of the houses in the neighborhood. ABoVE Light and airy, the sisters’ upstairs bedrooms have the lake home feel in both color and in view of Detroit Lake. LEFt the sisters used old cabin windows for closet doors. While it’s a fun look, Sonja joked that it gives them incentive to keep the closets clean, too.
Sonja said her father purchased the cabin in the 1970s and remodeled it in 1980. It had been a part of the Willow Haven cabin court. Sonja said it took a while for them to agree to be on the Damien Home Tour. “We said no to begin with because it’s so small.” But the Damiens wanted to show some affordable houses too, not just unobtainable houses for many, she said. So they changed their minds and agreed. “We love it,” Sonja said.
