It’s that time of year again! That’s right, the Detroit Lakes 78th Northwest Water Carnival takes place July 12-21 this year, and admirals Matt and Amy Boeke couldn’t be more excited. As this year’s admirals, the Boekes are involved with the planning of anything and everything that has to do with the water carnival. Amy, a Detroit Lakes native, is no newcomer when it comes to the Water Carnival. While she has lived here her entire life, her husband Matt, who is originally from Owatonna, has been here for nearly a decade, as he moved here in 2003. The two settled in Detroit Lakes. Amy became a kindergarten teacher at Rossman Elementary, and Matt became assistant vice president at First Security Bank. The Boekes have two children. Their oldest, Mya, is 5, and their youngest, Jay, is 20 months. Matt said that the two got involved with the DL Jaycees, “to be part of the community, give back to the community and to meet people.” Although Matt admits the planning process of this year’s Water Carnival can be a bit much, he said, “It’s been time consuming, but a good commitment to venture into.” When asked what they look
Amy and Matt Boeke are heading up this year’s Water Carnival celebration as admirals of the annual Detroit Lakes event. forward to the most at the Water Carnival, the two had to stop and think. In fact, Matt’s initial response was “all of it.” “The culmination would just be Bash on the Beach with John Michael Montgomery playing, that’s always fun just to see 3,000 plus people from the community down having a good time and listening to great music on the beach,” he added. “I think the kids events are always fun, especially having kids that are at an age where they are remembering from year to year what the Water Carnival is all about. It is kind of fun to think of the water carnival as kids events,” Amy said. Amy also spoke positively about the parade, adding that it is “a great way to wrap (the Water Carnival) up.” Although the admirals did have a lot of work to do this year, they feel the other Jaycees helped immensely. “It’s been very helpful to have
the number of Jaycees that we do and the strong group that we do to help us out. It’s really been a team effort, and we had a lot of really great people who have stepped up to help out,” Amy said. “With 80 plus members, it’s been great this year to share the workload, and everybody’s stepped up and done a great job,” Matt added. The Boekes have high hopes for this year’s carnival. “We just hope the community comes out and supports not only the Water Carnival, but come down and has a great time. The community is the reason we put it on so we hope they sure enjoy it and come down to participate,” Matt said. General buttons and brochures are available at several area businesses as well as the chamber of commerce. The Home Brew Contest takes place at Zorbaz and will feature samples from locally made beers and from distributors.
Teams of five compete in bed races in City Park July 17. This year there will be more challenges to the competition to keep it even more exciting and an even playing field.
Beds: Not just for sleeping BY HALEY FOSTER
hfoster@dlnewspapers.com
The Northwest Water Carnival Bed Races are back for their fifth year but count on some new challenges to the course this time around. “Hopefully this year we’re going to have some good challenges at the end,” organizer Eric Rotter said. Teams of five will be competing on make-shift beds on wheels for competition, prizes and charity. The race takes place at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, in the City Park. This year proceeds go to a literary foundation through Imagination Library. This program gives children that are registered one book every month from the time they’re born until they’re 6. Each team has four people to push the bed, and one rider. The rider must remain on the bed at all times. Once a team is assembled, they get to work on constructing their beds. Rotter said he is very excited for the race, but more specifically, the final portion of it.
“As you run down at the half way point, you have to complete a challenge. We’re trying to come up with some good ones to kind of stump the players a little bit and even out the playing field,” he said. The goal is to make it “so you don’t always have to be the fastest running team. You gotta also have to fastest mind,” he added. There will be multiple awards given at the race. For example, a grand prize award for the winners, a fundraising prize for the team that collected the most money
for charity, an award for the team with the best theme or team spirit, and a reward specifically for kids competing. Rotter said he wishes everyone competing the best of luck, but he urges participants not to forget that this is also a fundraiser. “We want people to not only come and have fun, but to also be able to raise some money to help out the charity for the Imagination Library.” For more information or to register, go to www.dljaycees. com, click on Water Carnival events and then Bed Races.
Home brew winner will be on tap at Zorbaz BY HALEY FOSTER
hfoster@dlnewspapers.com
The 78th Northwest Water Carnival is all about having a good time. You can do just that Thursday, July 18, from 6:30-10 p.m. at Zorbaz for this year’s Home Brew Beer Tasting. Besides the samples for those taste-testing, the grand prize winner will have their brew professionally brewed at a Minnesota brewery and have it on tap at Zorbaz for a period of time as well. For just $5, you can drink samples from various beer distributors in partnership with Zorbaz and the homebrewed beer of the contestants as well. There will be around 40 different kinds of beer to sample this year. The Home Brew Beer tasting is going on its sixth year and Chairman Kyle Imholte said he is really looking forward to the competition. “Last year we had over 20 entries and we’re hoping to get even more than that,” he said. It is free to enter the beermaking contest and contestants may enter as many recipes as they so choose. “People can bring one,
two, three types of beer or however many they want to enter. We just ask that it’s equivalent to a six pack,” Imholte said. There are “local celebrities” judging the contest, which consist of anyone from past Water Carnival admirals to a city official to Zorbaz bartenders. Each person that enters a beer gets a prize of free Zorbaz bucks as well as other things. Top-level prizes for the top three or four contestants will also be offered. This year the winner of the brewing challenge gets to go to Third Street Brewery in Cold Springs, Minn., bring their recipe and make a batch of their winning beer. From there, the brewery will then keg the batch and it will go on tap at Zorbaz until the beer runs out. “Come in, drink the distributors’ beer for free. It’s usually a lot of fun,” Imholte said. Last year around 200 people showed up to watch the contest and sample the beers. Imholte said he hopes that not only will more people come out, but more brewers will enter their recipes for a chance to win as well.

Bring out the entire family out for fun BY HALEY FOSTER
hfoster@dlnewspapers.com
The 78th Northwest Water Carnival’s Family Day takes place on Sunday, July 14, this year. Family Day, a Water Carnival favorite, will be returning with both new and old events and activities. Family Day starts with Young Life worship in the Pavilion followed by activities such as a free family picnic, the traditional ship building contest, face painting, sand treasure dig, water walking balls, hula hoop con-test, fishing extravaganza, trolley rides, toddler trot, sand castle contest, watermelon feed and music for the kids by Tim Eggebraaten. The Fishing Extravaganza is new this year and takes place from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. during trolley rides. It is recommended that kids and their families bring their own fishing poles, however if you do not own a pole there will be limited gear available at the extravaganza. Bait will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own. “It’s mainly designed for the kids, but parents can join if they’d like — but they need a fishing license to do so,” Chairman Jake Judd said. If parents want to just watch their kids fish, no license is needed. Here’s how the extravaganza works: you catch a fish, you win a prize. There

Below, the Fly-In and breakfast takes place at the airport, where people can check out home-built aircraft. will be Jaycees there to help the kids and ensure their safety. MinnAqua Intern Kyle Quietschreiber will also be there to offer assistance. The MinnAqua program is run through Minnesota’s Department of Natural Resources and supplies in-
terns who in turn provide fishing and aquatic resources education to youth and families across the state. Trolley rides are also a new event to Family Day. This year free trolley rides will be given to children and their families around the park, Washington
Avenue and the beach area. “Just show up and jump on the trolley and we’ll go for a little ride and hit the siren and the bell,” Chairman Kyle Imholte said. He said he felt that the reason Jaycees decided to make this event a part of Family Day was because “a lot of kids see the trolley and they get excited about it just like a fire truck and they want to ride on it. So, we thought let’s have it for Family Day.” Being that Family Day is a free day for the community to show up and bring their kids, the Jaycees felt this would be the appropriate setting to showcase their fairly new trolley (it was rebuilt last year), all while allowing kids and their families a relaxing, fun ride around downtown. The annual Sand Castle Contest will also be held on Family Day in front of the Pavilion. There are three separate categories for contestants: families, individual adults and individual kids. Two types of sand castles are allowed during the competition, classic sand castles or building shaped sand castles, and free form sand castles. Free form castles include mermaid sculptures and other unique creations made out of sand. Participants will need to supply their own tools. Miss Northwest and Miss Teen Northwest will be judging the contest.
Fly-In features home-made aircraft; start with waffles BY HALEY FOSTER
hfoster@dlnewspapers.com
If you like classic cars, airplanes and breakfast foods, you are in luck. Chairman Dennis Jacobs said a great way to start the 78th Northwest Water Carnival off right is at the Fly-in and breakfast held at the Detroit Lakes Airport on Saturday, July 13, from 8-11:30 a.m. Going on its fourth year during the Water Carnival, the Fly-In is sponsored by the Lakes Area chapter of the Experimental Aircraft Association. This year’s Fly-in includes, but is not limited to, home-built and experimental aircraft and classic cars from the surrounding area. There will even be a hot air balloon on display this year. At the fly-in, you will get to see a variety of planes and learn about how they work. There will be around 75 to 100 aircraft available for viewing. In many cases, the very pilots who fly them have built these unique
aircrafts. This is fairly new to the show. “The theme for this year is local talent and homemade or experimental aircraft,” Jacobs said. Recreation and military planes will also be on display. There will be a delicious breakfast held during the Fly-In, featuring waffles by Dad’s Belgian Waffles. Breakfasts are $6 for ages 13 and up, $5 for ages 6 to 12, and children 5 and under eat for free. Anyone 18 and younger interested in flying or aircraft are more than welcome to sign up for plane rides during the fly-in. This year, Jacobs said they hope to have around 300 to 500 people at the fly-in. “We would love to see everybody from Detroit Lakes come out.” If you are interested in aircraft and aviation, or classic cars, feel free to stop by. You can admire the planes and cars, ask questions and enjoy a tasty breakfast.

John Michael Montgomery headlines Bash BY HALEY FOSTER
hfoster@dlnewspapers.com
Music will be heard throughout Detroit Lakes as the town celebrates the 78th Annual Northwest Water Carnival. There will be two large music events taking place at this year’s Water Carnival. Dance on Detroit will be held in the Pavilion on Tuesday, July 16, at 7 p.m. Performing at Dance on Detroit will be Doc and the Scrubs and the new Miss Northwest 2013 showcasing her talent. The big event for music this year is Bash on the Beach featuring country singer John Michael Montgomery. Bash on the Beach takes place Saturday, July 20, starting at 11 a.m. and continuing with various acts throughout the day. The Jaycees knew that they wanted to host an unforgettable bash. So how did they decide on John Michael Montgomery, you may ask? Well, Admiral Matt Boeke said, “We wanted a big name that would draw people in. John Michael is known for great shows, and we were fortunate enough to book him.” John Michael Mont-gomery has had quite a few hits over the years including “Sold (the Grundy County Fair Incident),” “I Swear,” “I love the Way You Love Me,” “Life’s a Dance,” “Letters from Home” and “Be My Baby Tonight.” He has sold 18 million albums and 36 hit singles. He has also had 15 No. 1 hits and 18 Top 10
