Steam Threshers

REUNION FOCUSES ON GAAR SCOTT ENGINES

E

very labor day since 1954 the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion has taken place in Rollag. This year will be its 60th reunion of the show and will be featuring Gaar Scott Engines. It all started in 1940 when local thresher men, the Nelson boys, fired up their family’s Gaar Scott engine, which has been in the Nelson family since 1926, to thresh with steam again for old time sake. The Nelson Gaar Scott is credited to be the engine that started the reunion. As it was fired up for a day of threshing in 1940 friends, family and a few spectators were attracted to the scene. The Nelson family continued the event once a year until 1954, when Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion met formally for the first time and invited the public. Since then the show has grown to include hundreds of demonstrations and exhibits that spread over 210 acres. The show attracts thou8 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2013

sands of spectators and volunteers every Labor Day weekend. The Nelson Gaar Scott has been operated every year since 1926, with the exception of a few years before and during World War II. It leads each parade and does the whistle signals prior to each parade. Various forms of entertainment are available each day of the reunion including music, parades, camping, hundreds of different types of machinery for one to observe, with tractors, steam, gas, and horse powered contraptions, a pioneer village, and train rides just to name a few attractions. Camping is on a first come first serve basis; this includes a $35 camping fee that covers the duration of your stay. There is also a gate fee. This can be covered in various ways. There is a season pass that covers all four days that costs $20 or the cost is $12 per day. Children 14 and under are free with a paid adult. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

Crazy Daze

GET READY TO SHOP: DOWNTOWN SALES GALORE

F

or amazing deals so good that some might even call them insane, come shop ‘til you drop at Crazy Daze on Aug. 6 from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. This annual event brings the community together to enjoy the beautiful summer weather and to experience the thrill of the hunt while supporting some of the local businesses of Detroit Lakes. Come early to check out the best deals before they’re gone, or swing by during your lunch break for a stroll downtown. A visit to Crazy Daze at the end of the work day is also the perfect way to unwind with some retail therapy. Stores will be clearing out their stock to make room for new fall inventory, selling older summer items with huge discounts. The 800 and 900 blocks of Washington Avenue will be closed to motor traffic, and the streets will instead be filled with people eager to finds some bargains amidst the clearance racks and tables. 10 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2013

According to Carrie Johnston, president of the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce, 30-40 stores are usually represented, and shops within the mall often hold sales indoors as well. Crazy Daze has been an area tradition for decades and is sure to offer something for everyone. From clothing and luggage, to books and lawn décor, you might even get a jump start on finding a new school wardrobe for the kids. Food vendors are available to fuel hungry shoppers, and the selection has expanded in recent years. In past summers, face painting, inflatable bouncy games, and other fun activities have been provided to keep kids entertained. A committee is also working to secure some great musical performances to enhance the fun Crazy Daze atmosphere. For more information about the event or to reserve vendor space, contact the Detroit Lakes Chamber of Commerce at 218-847-9202. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

Families Forever

BEAUTIFUL GARDEN, BEAUTIFUL QUILTS TO SHOW

T

he Families Forever Garden Quilt Show and Tea is back and looking for quilts and donations. All proceeds from the show go directly to the Families Forever scholarship, in honor of Mary Disse Ballard. The show, which is Aug. 17, is from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. at 4020 4th Street in Lake Park, hosted at the home and garden of Peggy Stellmach, Mary’s sister. Families Forever consists of two scholarships. One goes to a Miss Northwest contestant in the amount of $500. The other scholarship is for a Lake ParkAudubon senior girl. This year the scholarship was $1,500. While there, one can enjoy the musical talents of Harpist Tami Jensen. Tami, a former member of the Celtic band Northwind Crossing, volunteers to play each year during the show. Quilts will be accepted until Aug. 16; they must be turned in that day at Peggy’s house. 12 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2013

Those attending the show will be the judges of the quilt contest. It is strictly a people’s choice competition, so anyone from a beginner to a long time expert has an equal chance of winning if the people voting fall in love with a quilt. Prizes will be awarded to the top five quilters in the contest. Aside from the quilt show portion of the event, there are some new additions to the garden as well. Stellmach has increased the amount of hardy hibiscus, added a small herb garden with fennel, lemon basil, regular basil and two different types of parsley. She also grows lavender, rosemary and oregano. If you are interested in entering a quilt, donating prizes, or wish for more information on this year’s garden quilt show go to http://quiltsandtea.weebly. com/. It is $5 to get into the quilt show, and a limited amount of lunches may be purchased for an additional $8. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

Forest Rally

100-PLUS MILE RACING EVENT PART OF SERIES

T

he 2013 Ojibwe Forests Rally is once again part of the Rally America National Series. After a brief hiatus in 2011 and a successful return in 2012, the Ojibwe Forests Rally is poised to be back to its former glory this year. The 100-plus mile, timed car racing event, which twists and winds through the north woods of Norman and Becker Counties, has been added to the Rally America national series. Headquartered in Detroit Lakes, the race will be held Aug. 23-24, with weeklong events leading up to the race itself. The Ojibwe will be event No. 6 on the National schedule, which has races from Oregon to Maine to Missouri. New additions this year include a new location for the SuperSpecial on Saturday morning and the 2013 VIP Special Package. This year the SuperSpecial will be racing at the Buffalo River Race Park just east of Glyndon. 24 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2013

Last year’s Ojibwe Forests Rally, which was a regional Rally America event, had 31 racing teams entered with 14 finishing the race in its’ entirety. Organizers expect 60 teams entered in the 2013 national rally. Volunteers are a crucial part of making this weekend possible so as a reward all volunteers will be entered in a drawing to ride along with a driver on the practice stage. Volunteers also get to be closer to all the action, get free swag and see parts of the rally not everyone is able to. Sponsors and partners for this year the Holiday Inn on the Lake, Quizno’s, and Dock’s all in Detroit Lakes. Gorilla Offroad and Muscatell Auto Group will also be participating in the rally again this year. For more information, to register as a volunteer, view this year’s rules and regulations, or to register as a competitor, go to http://ojibweforestrally.com/. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

Tamarac Refuge NIGHT LIFE ON THE REFUGE INCLUDES OWLS, WOLVES, MORE

A

ugust is the month to prepare for the cold months ahead. Spend some time in nature to rejuvenate your spirit before the frigid temperatures arrive. Experience some vibrant early foliate color with native sumacs and observe the beauty of late summer flowers including yarrow, goldenrod, hoary alyssum and woodland sunflower. Sample some late summer cuisine with raspberries, gooseberries, elderberries, pin cherries and chokecherries that can all be found and picked south of Cty Hwy 26 in the visitor area. See you on the refuge where the blacktop ends and the backwoods begin!

Wildlife watching Here at Tamarac, wildlife is left undisturbed as they care for their young. Portions of the refuge are closed to the public during this crucial time, but many viewing opportunities still exist. The most optimum times for viewing wildlife occur around sunrise and sunset. But sometimes even an afternoon visit can be rewarding to the quiet, watchful observer. To increase your chances of seeing wildlife, take a drive on the Blackbird Wildlife Drive. This five mile drive follows the edges of lakes, marshes and meadows. If you feel inclined to exercise, hike the twomile long Old Indian Hiking Trail and experience the beauty of the maple basswood forest. Another option is to venture out on the new North Country Trail which traverses 14 miles through the southern half of the refuge. tamarac | to page 28 DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

tamarac’S WILD NIGHtLIFE On a sun-filled afternoon Tamarac will receive many visitors seeking to find wildlife in the great outdoors. However, just because we go to sleep at night, doesn’t mean all of Minnesota’s wildlife does the same. The evening in a forest is a thrilling new world with a unique set of sights and sounds. In fact some of the prime wildlife viewing, or listening opportunities exist in the hours of darkness. Here are some wildlife calls and sightings that can be found on the refuge when the sun sets. • Loon Calls: There is probably nothing more distinctive in the northern wilderness than the call of the loon. The loon has four basic calls. The tremolo, which sounds like quivering laughter, is a sound of alarm and aggression. This is also the call a loon performs when flying. The “wail” is the long lonely call used to communicate over distance. The “yodel” is used by males to guard their territory. Finally the “hoot” a shorter call, is used to communicate with the young. • Wolf Howls: Wolves are some of the most social and vocal mammals. Howling is used to identify one another, celebrate a successful hunt and find other pack members. The low pitch and long duration of a howl are well suited for transmission in forest and across tundra. Because wolves range over vast areas to find food, they are often separated from one another. Howling serves as the glue that keeps a pack physically together. Wolves are sometimes even responsive to a human howling. • Owls: The word owl comes from the old English word ule, which means to howl. Minnesota has twelve different owl species that are active in the darkness of Tamarac’s forests. Owl calls can be heard on the refuge that range from rapid whistles, long piercing screeches and gentle softer hoots. The two most common species on the refuge are the barred owl and the great horned owl. The barred owl has a call that sounds like it is saying “who cooks for you?” While the great horned owl call is from 3 to 8 hoots, most often six. It is called a “hootie” or hoot owl because its call is a deep who–who HOO-HOO. Because these creatures are active mainly by night, counter to our diurnal activity, they are often misunderstood and considered evil — blood sucking bats, the Big Bad Wolf. Though these are fascinating creatures that have adapted themselves to the night in order to reduce overall competition for resources among other species; it allows animals with similar food sources, such as hawks and owls, to live within the same habitat.
