Holland appreciates Sweet 16

Kretchman makes another comeback, plus 2 holes BY BRIAN WIERIMA

brianw@dlnewspapers.com

When Connor Holland won the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament in 2011, he became just the third 17-year-old golfer to do so in its 79 year history. Flash forward to the 82nd Pine to Palm Golf Tournament at the Detroit Country Club and Holland appreciates how difficult it is to win the elusive golf title. “I haven’t made it past the first round since 2011,” Holland said. “It’s a super tough tournament, one in which any of the 64 players can win it.” But Friday saw Holland back in the Pine to Palm sweet 16, after he had to earn a hardfought 1-up win over Mike Balzer. Holland shot a three-over par 145 qualifying score and he finally was able to break a two-year drought of making it out of the first round with a 2-up win over Fargo’s Andrew Passanante. But this year’s run is much different than his championship trail from 2011. “In 2011, I was playing very well all week,” Holland said. “This year I found I can grind out some rounds. I am drawing off those experiences.” Friday’s round against Balzer was an even match, with Holland building a 2-up advantage, but seeing it dissipate back to square by hole 15. Both notched a birdie on 16, with the turning point coming on an eight-foot par putt on 17 to give Holland the lead. He went up and down on 18 to secure the victory and his second trip to the field of 16. Holland, who plays for the NDSU men’s golf team, will face Moorhead native and University of Kansas sophomore Ben Welle in the morning round. Welle was a 3 and 2 victor over John Sund Friday. One golfer who is the epitome of grind has been Fargo Davies’ graduate Tanner Kretchman. The newest guard for the Minnesota State University Moorhead Dragon men’s basketball team, had to scratch back into his match on the back nine, much like Thursday’s match in which he drained five straight birdies to erase a three-hole deficit for the win. But this time around, Kretchman needed 20 holes to finish off Perham native Taylor Cavanagh, who held a 2-up lead at the turn. “I wasn’t playing that bad on the front nine, he was just playing that good,” Kretchman said. “I was in the fairway for the most part and gave myself an opportunity; I just played well down the stretch.” Kretchman kick started his

The two went halves on 17 and 18 to force extra playoff holes, where each had eagle putts on the first hole, but settled for birdie. On the second extra hole, both were in the trees off the drive, but Kretchman was sitting better. He took advantage of his advantageous shooting lane, whereas Cavanagh had

to shoot twice for the green to finish with bogey. Kretchman was able to chip on and sink his par putt for the win. “It’s been tiring and stressful the last two days,” Kretchman said. “That takes a lot of out of you. I know getting off to a good start is always good and I’d prefer not have to come back on the back nine always. “But if that’s the way it has to be, that’s fine, too.”

Zach Israelson rolls a long birdie putt on the par three 14th green during his Friday match against Matt Bekkerus. Israelson won the match 5 and 3. The No. 64 seeded Kretchman will face Michael Kosiek, who beat Adam Gronaas 1-up Friday. The local connection for the Pine to Palm is down to one, with Detroit Lakes High School senior Ben Mallow playing his way into Saturday’s round. Mallow controlled his match against Dylan Baker Friday, winning 3 and 2.

“It seemed I made a lot of up and downs to save holes and I don’t know if that frustrated (Baker) or not,” Mallow said. “I didn’t play anything special today. I got away with some stuff, but I did make a few sands shot to save par, though.” Mallow’s opponent will be CHAMPIONSHIP to page 3 ➤

Cavanagh burns his way to Mid-Am Final 4 BY BRIAN WIERIMA

brianw@dlnewspapers.com

In most matches, Jay Olafson’s game Friday would have been good enough to advance him to the Pine to Palm Mid-Am semifinals, but unfortunately for the twotime champion, his quarterfinal match-up with Perham’s Bob Cavanaugh was not that match. Cavanagh won the battle of the birdies in the Mid-Am quarterfinals to beat Olafson 6 and 5, after he finished with a six-under par score. “Everything was going well for me,” Cavanagh said. “My short game was good, my putting, and my driving. I was up and down out of three bunkers. “It was one of my better rounds in quite some time.” Olafson shot well, too,

making four birdies, but it wasn’t good enough to quell Cavanagh’s hot streak. Cavanagh was good right out of the gates and held a 4-up advantage at the turn. By then his stroke was on cue and he rolled the rest of the way. This is Cavanagh’s third Mid-Am tournament, with the rest of his time over the last 20-plus years playing in the championship field. He made the semifinals last year, as well, and looks to better that this time around. “I just need to get better every day,” Cavanagh said. “I know I probably won’t match what I did today, but I am definitely going to try and keep it going.” Cavanagh’s next opponent will be medalist Scott Uithoven, who beat Marc Redman 1-up Friday. In the upper bracket, de-

fending champion Perry Piatz downed Keith Aasen 1-up in 19 holes, while Kent Spriggs toppled Tim Carlson 5 and 3. The semifinal foursome will tee off at 12:49 p.m. on the first tee.

There will be one potential repeat Pine to Palm Senior champion left, as 2012 champ Scott Linnerooth played to the semifinals Friday. Linnerooth will face Larry Olin in the final four showdown, after he downed Tom Thompson 2 and 1. Olin beat Rick Samson 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals in upper bracket action.

In the lower bracket, Rick Johnson ended Rob Harris’ quest to become a two-time champion with a 2 and 1 victory. Harris already had clinched his second consecutive medalist honor earlier in the week. Johnson will face Jim Brothers, who outlasted John Hagge 1-up in a closely contested match. The Seniors will tee off at 1:51 p.m. on both tee one and 10.

For over 20 years, Detroit Lakes’ Steve Sundby enjoyed the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament as a volunteer, running the ball spotter crew throughout the week. For his efforts, Sundby was awarded the Rutledge Award in 2008, which honors those

who have put in longevity, promotion, service and sportsmanship. After retiring his Pine to Palm duties three years ago, Sundby was able to experience the tournament from the other side as a player and it’s paying dividends. win 3 and 2. The retired DLHS teacher found himself down three holes at the turn, so he started to put some urgency in the back nine and it started early. “I had a sand save on 10 and made a short, downhill putt which helped me gain some momentum,” Sundby said. “I was driving the ball so well on the back nine and I just took it one hole at a time.” The two halved the hole on 11, but Sundby was able to take birdie on 12 and took par on 13 for the win. He went for back-toback wins on 14 and 15, while a tie on 16 ended the match. “It’s a dream come true to play in the Pine to Palm,” Sundby said. Next up for Sundby will be Super Senior co-medalist and three-time champion Chuck Renner, who was a 6 and 4 winner over Lance Brown. “I’m just going to have to play my game against Chuck, who I’ve played with a bit this summer,” Sundby said. “I can’t get wrapped up in what Chuck is doing, because then I could be in trouble. He is a good golfer.” In the bottom bracket quarterfinals, Don Bradford beat James Wolff 3 and 2, while Dr. Lynn Marr down Ronald Vincelli 2 and 1. The Super Seniors semifinal tee time will be at 12:47 p.m. off of tees one and 10.

45th Annual Ironman Classic Ironman Golf Course • August 14-15, 2014 THREE WAY PLAYOFF-A FIRST AT THE IRONMAN JUNIOR CLASSIC It was an exciting finish in the final round of competition of the Ironman Junior Classic at Ironman Golf Course. The Championship flight of the Boys 8 & 9 Year Old Division provided some drama as three juniors, Hunter Hanson(Detroit Lakes, MN), Saylor Kuenzel(Grand Forks, ND) and Jack Randall(Lawrence, KS) came in tied for first with a two day- 9 hole total of 82. A sudden death playoff with 3 participants began on the first tee. Local favorite, Hunter Hanson, saw his chance at the title slip through his fingers when his tee ball went out of bounds. Saylor Kuenzel made an easy par, forcing Jack Randall to make a short putt under pressure. Jack’s putt slid by to give Saylor the title; however, a putt of similar distance on the second playoff hole allowed Jack to secure 2nd place. Hunter Hanson settled for 3rd. Satchel Tickel and Tyler Burnside battled it out for 18 holes in the finals of the match play for the 13-16 year old division. Satchel got the win and the title of champion on the 18th hole after being down two after nine hole of play. In the First flight of the Boys 8 & 9 Year Old Division, Nolan Eckman(Bloomington, MN) shot a two day total of 89 to edge out Nolan Witham(Roseville, MN) by one stroke. Detroit Lakes’ Aiden Lunde came in 3rd with a 96. In the Championship flight of the Girls division, Riley Crothers of Bismark shot another 51 to secure the 1st place trophy with a two day total of 102. Detroit Lakes’ Abby Larson shot a 52 to vault from 4th to 2nd place with a 106. Kay Pederson of Lake Park, MN came in 3rd with a 107. The First flight of the Girls division had the two lowest rounds of the tournament for the girls. McKenna Mallow of Detroit Lakes shot the low round of the day and the tournament for the girls, a 48 to secure second place with a two day total of 117 after a disappointing first day round. Unfortunately she couldn’t catch Falyn DeBoer, also of Detroit Lakes, who shot the second lowest score of the tournament, a 49 for a two day total of 107 and the first place trophy. Mia Tickel secured 3rd place with a 17 stroke improvement on her first day score and a two day total of 123. The heat was on in the afternoon as the Championship flight of the Boys 10-12 year old division had some fierce competition. Four golfers shot rounds of 69 to remain at the top of the leader board. Unfortunately for Brady McGarry of Grand Forks, it was not enough to grab a trophy with a two day total of 110. Brandon McGarry of Grand Forks snuck into third with his 69 for a total of 106. He won a tie breaker with his lower Friday score over Koby Kuenzel who shot a 72 today. Parker Bartels of Oxbow came in second with his 69 added to yesterday’s score of 35 for a total of 104. “The quiet assassin” Scott Boehning shot 33-69 for a total of 102 and the first place trophy. In the First flight of the Boys 10-12 year old division, Matthew Tobkins of Detroit Lakes ran away with the title with a great score today of 72. His two day total of 114 gave him a 20 stroke victory over Jake Green (Detroit Lakes) and Carter Tickel (Hawley, MN) who tied with two day totals of 134. Jake received the 2nd place trophy due to his lower Friday score of 81. Carter came in 3rd. It was a great day of good sportsmanship amid the rivalries and new and renewed friendships. We look forward to the 46th annual Ironman Junior Classic next August!
