Exciting time for regional football fans BY ROBERT WILLIAMS
rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com
The opening game of the football season brings a fresh buzz on Friday nights and in this region of the state that excitement stretches from the local gridiron to the professional stage. This story was written hours before the final Minnesota Vikings preseason game versus Tennessee, where Adam Thielen of Detroit Lakes is making a big push for the No. 5 receiver spot for the Vikes. Thielen, who went from undrafted rookie from Division III Minnesota State Mankato has consistently been the fifth-best receiver on the team this offseason. Saturday, he also showed that he could be a nice Plan B at punt returner. He showed excellent shiftiness and speed while returning a punt 75 yards to the Kansas City 5-yard line, according to a Sports XChange Vikings team report. On the college level, DL’s Joe Mollberg is the opening day starter for the University of North Dakota at San
Jose State, in a game also scheduled for this evening. Mollberg started the majority of games last season for North Dakota and got the nod to start under center from first year head coach Bubba Schweigert in mid-August. A pair of Lakers make their freshman debuts at Concordia College Moorhead under Head Coach Terry Horan in quarterback and all-time Laker leading scorer Michael Herzoz and Kirby Siewert. Herzog should have a year to get up to speed behind three-year Cobber starter and senior Griffin Neal. Siewert is battling for a spot on the defensive line. Certainly for Detroit Lakes football fans, there are big games featuring recent alumni to tune in to, or hit the road to see these players on a national stage. This year’s local high school scene features a lot of talent, as well. Jordan Harms and Ben Ellefson lead a poEXCIT tent offenING TIMES sive attack TO PAGE in Hawley 3 for a

3 Nugget team that is smarting from a loss at Metrodome 2 FROM PAGE in the state semifinals to Chatfield. That loss has fueled the Nuggets to get in the weight room over the summer and the team’s goal is certainly a berth in the state final. Having made two consecutive trips to state, Hawley’s core group of players know what it takes to win those big games in November. Ellefson will stay close to home next season as a football recruit for North Dakota State University. While both divisions of the Heart O’ Lakes Conference annually sport a highly competitive race for the title, the Classic Division features some powerhouse teams that should make Friday nights in Classic play just that...an arena for classic games. Barnesville is coming off a 10-1 season and that lone loss came when Trojans had their season ended by Hawley 42-21 at Fargodome in the section final. The Breckenridge Cowboys are always in the mix and defeated Hawley in a defensive battle winning 7-6 in Hawley for a share of the Classic crown. Coming back to the Heart O’ Lakes this season is Frazee just in time to battle with what should be a tough running game to stop with a big and experienced line opening holes for a lot of talent in the backfield. In the Northern division of the HOL, many teams are rebuilding after losing big-time players and loads of seniors making for an open battle for the title that has been mostly in the hands of Perham or Detroit Lakes. Park Rapids got in the mix last season sharing the title with the Lakers. The Mahnomen Indians are riding a winning streak that has brought two consecutive state championships. Winners of 28 straight games, the second-longest in school history, Mahnomen has not lost since the state finals in 2011 to Dawson-Boyd. That game is the only loss in the past 42 football games for the Indians. There’s little reason to think Mahnomen will not make another appearance in the state playoffs. It will take a monumental effort by another Section 8A team to dethrone the machine in Mahnomen. Finally, on a personal note, this year marks my own return to the sidelines in Detroit Lakes. I played on a 10-1 team in 1988 that lost to a highly skilled team from StaplesMotley that starred Arden Beachy. Beachy went on to play at North Dakota State University and is currently a Lakewood Health Systems physician and head basketball coach in Staples. Having covered Perham football for the past four seasons, I’ve made a pair of trips back to Mollberg Field, which was named such my senior year of high school. Those trips always felt a little strange covering the away team and I look forward to watching the Red and White play this year from the home sideline.

GRAND FORKS – For the second year in a row, a University of North Dakota football coaching staff had a decision to make at starting quarterback between Joe Mollberg and Ryan Bartels. On Wednesday, first-year head coach Bubba Schweigert tabbed Mollberg as his starter for the Aug. 28 season opener against San Jose State. Both sophomores, Mollberg and Bartels split action last season. Mollberg made seven starts and threw for 1,729 yards. However, he had 13 interceptions to only seven touchdowns. Bartels passed for 1,396 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions. “We chose Joe to take command of this thing,” Schweigert said. “All of our decisions we look at what’s best for the team. At this point, with (Mollberg’s) skill set, knowledge of the offense and performance in fall camp, we feel that’s what’s best for our team.” Mollberg, a Detroit Lakes, Minn., native, said he’s feeling comfortable in new offensive coordinator Paul Rudolph’s offense. “I’m ready to take on this role,” Mollberg said. “This is what I’ve been working for the last two, three years. I feel like the team is following me, and they’ve got my back. I’m excited to prep for San Jose (State) starting on Saturday.” Schweigert said both Mollberg and Bartels have improved from spring ball to fall camp. “It was a good competition,” he said. “We split the reps, and I’m proud of all of our guys. They worked hard. We felt Ryan made strides, too. They’re better players than they were a year ago.”

Detroit Lakes native Joe Mollberg grabbed the starting duties at quarterback for the University of North Dakota. North Dakota opens their season on the road at San Jose State. Mollberg said his biggest improvement from last season is his understanding of the game and grasp of the offense. “You have to command the huddle and the line of scrimmage,” he said. “From spring to now, I’ve made strides but I have to keep going and keep growing.” Schweigert released a depth chart for the first time Wednesday. In a bit of a surprise, senior Jer Garman was slated as the No. 1 running back. Transfer Cedric Simmons was No. 2. “I don’t think we have a guy in our program who’s going to get 25 to 30 carries a game,” Schweigert said. “We like what Cedric is doing. He brings a different style of runner to us. We like what Jer brings as more of a scat back. Adam (Shaugabay) is good in goal-line situations.
“The challenge we’ve made to all of our running backs is to be complete. Who can run, block and catch? That’s the guy who will emerge as the guy and get the most reps.” Schweigert’s newly released depth chart also highlighted a number of true freshmen. “There’s at least six guys who we are going to have on the trip (to San Jose State),” Schweigert said. “We’ll use them and work them into the rotation. We’re going to take our best talent and get them on the field.” True freshmen in the two-deep depth chart include wide receiver Brandon Walker, cornerback Chris Carter, wide receiver Dev Ferguson, center Jake Francis, kicker Reid Taubenheim, defensive end Drew Greely, defensive end Brandon Dranka and safety Josiah Montague.

nior and steps up behind center for his final campaign. Tanner Bachmann and Austin Torma also bring a ton of talent to the Hornet offense. Tanner Bachmann is the best returning wide receiver, but is also a strong runner and will be lined up in the backfield giving Rader the luxury of moving him around the formation. Torma adds more versatility at the fullback position and gives the Hornets the option to play smash mouth football. “He’s carrying 230-pounds of attitude with him. He’s going to be able to bang the ball.” Riley Utke, Colton Olson, and Matt Daggett are all surehanded options at the receiver position. Daggett was injured with a broken foot in last year’s home opener after making his first reception and will be primed to get on the field this year. The right side of the line is huge, along with experience at center, and will present big problems for opposing defenses. Calvin Streeper is a twoyear starter at center “He’s a straight-A student, which is what I really like. My centers are usually guys that are pretty bright. They can
serve as our eyes on the offensive line.” Roger Thorp, a 265-pounder, is trimmed down from 300 pounds last year and will start at guard. “He’s moving well.” Garrett Malstrom, state wrestling heavyweight runner-up, will line up at tackle. Both lineman bench press over 400-pounds. “From the center to the right, that line is going to be as solid as anybody.” Malstrom and Thorp are animals on defense also. In eight games, Malstrom had 107 tackles, 4.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss and one forced fumble at linebacker. Thorp is a two-way starter on both lines and had 33 tackles last season. Frazee has seven seniors. “We’re short, in that respect, but the kids that we have are good.” Frazee is right on the bubble between class sizes that qualify for Class A or 2A football. “It is what it is. We’re going to line up and play ball.” Frazee will look to improve on a successful 7-3 season last year making it to the Section 8 semifinal losing to Barnesville 41-0. The Hornets have not been
to the state tournament since 1990. Frazee opens the year hosting Park Rapids Area Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. The Panthers # 1 2 3 5 9 12 15 19 20 22 25 27 28 30 31 33 36 38 42 45 51 52 54 55 56 58 59 60 61 62 63 64 65 68 70 72 77 78 82 84 85 87 89

The Frazee football team continues the resurgence of the pride instilled in teams of the past having recorded seven consecutive winnings seasons with 2014 looking to be another as the Hornets return to the Heart O’ Lakes Conference for the first time since 2006. Frazee tied as runners-up in the Northstar West Conference last season with Red Lake County behind Mahnomen, the two-time state champions. Getting Mahnomen off the schedule is a plus, but the HOL Classic Conference will provide stiff competition, as well, namely, last year’s co-champions Hawley and Breckenridge. Barnesville also returns to the Classic this season adding more punch to an already competitive conference. The Hornet offense returns its top rusher in Hesston Bachmann, who rushed for over 1,200 yards last season. “He’s a dangerous athlete; he’s proven that since he’s been a sophomore,” Head Coach Jim Rader said. Hesston lined up at wing his sophomore season, was the starting tailback as a ju-

First year head football coach Brad Dunham takes over the helm at Lake ParkAudubon, having been an assistant under former head coach Jed Swegarden for the past seven years. Dunham has a group of players who resemble the most successful Raider team in recent history, the 2008-09 team that made it to the state semifinals. “I think we’re built a lot like the ’08 team,” said Dunham. “We’re fast, not a big line with talented running backs.” Senior Tim Brekken will head the offense at the quarterback position. “He’s got some speed and he’s a very athletic kid,” Dunham said. “We just have to work a lot harder than the other teams,” Brekken said. “We’re going to be a lot smaller; we’ll be fast.” In the passing game, Brekken will target three receivers, one from each class. “We’ve got Brady Mann, who has good hands. Mitchell
Hall, a sophomore who has pretty good hands and they’re both pretty quick,” said Brekken. Mann is the senior leader at wideout. Hunter Christianson, a junior, will also be a steady target for Brekken. Dunham will use a steady, attacking, offensive philosophy. “We’re going to be happy with runs giving me threefour yards, passes, give me five-six yards,” he said. “If we can do that up and down the field consistently, I’m happy with that.” The running game should shine for the Raiders with the senior duo of Taylor Briard and Tory Haglund returning with plenty of experience. “If we can block and give them two seconds, we can get around ‘em,” Dunham said. Most of the line will be bumped up from last year’s junior varsity team. “Our linemen have speed,” Dunham said. “We’re not the biggest, we’ve got some height, but they understand the concept of blocking and the scheme, so I think that’s going to work out really well.” LP-A lost 14 seniors to graduation last season and return with eight upperclassmen on the roster this year. “I’m happy with the numbers we have right now,” said

NUGGETS
The Hawley Nuggets look to make their third straight trip to the state AA football tournament and eyes are on the title game. “It’s definitely one of our goals going into the season, but, there’s obviously a season before that, so we just want to take it one at a time and just try to do the best we can and get better for state, hopefully, down the road,” senior Ben Ellefson said. Ellefson is headed to North Dakota State University next season, but he’ll try to get Hawley its first non co-op team title in school history before he heads off to college. Ellefson can play multiple positions on offense and showcased that ability last year. Opponents can expect much of the same in his senior year. “So far in practice I’ve moved around a little bit,” he said. “I guess we’ll see what happens in games.” Last season, Ellefson recorded 34 receptions for 613 yards and nine touchdowns, 48 carries for 347 yards and seven touchdowns and had 46 tackles, four interceptions, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery at linebacker. He earned all-section and conference MVP honors, along with scholarships to Wyoming, North Dakota State, South Dakota State, Army, New Mexico and Fordham. Under center will be fellow senior and returning starter Jordan Harms, who will benefit from a two tight end set when needed with Ellefson and Dawson Tusow bookends on the line. Dillon Omberg, Anthony Loegering, and Anthony Logan are projected to fill out the backfield. “We should have a much more aggressive and effective passing game to complement our varied running attack,” Head Coach Peder Naatz said. Hawley fans and opponents will have to get used to hearing the phrase, “Harms’ pass complete to Ellefson.” While Hawley’s home field is under construction, the Nuggets will play home games at Moorhead’s new turf field, Concordia and the Fargodome. The varied home sites will allow a bigger crowd to witness what should be an electric year on the field for a core group of seniors. Last year’s 10-2 squad advanced to the state semifinals losing to an athletic Chatfield team, the eventual state champions. “Losing to Chatfield last year put a bad taste in our mouths, because they were a lot bigger than us,” Ellefson

Seniors: Levi Liebl, Gabe Large, Anthony Sanchez, Kurt Francis, Jake Refshaw, Kaleb Gieseke, Luke Warnsholz, Dylan Reitan, Jon Hoffner, Micah Londo.
Mahnomen lost Lefebvre to a torn meniscus right before the season started. He may miss the season. “That is a huge blow for us as he was one of the top players in class A football.” Lefebvre rushed for two scores and threw for a touchdown in the state title game. Mahnomen opens the season at Pine River-Backus, 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 29.
INDIANS
For the two-time defending Class A state champion Mahnomen Indians, a simple axiom summarizes their preseason. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it. “It will be much of the same for our football team this year,” Head Coach John Clark, Jr. Much of the same is holding the longest active winning streak in Minnesota high school football. The Indians have won 28 straight games en route to two straight consecutive Class 1A titles. Mahnomen holds the record for most state championship appearances with 12, plus 21 state tournament appearances, which is third alltime behind Cretin-Durham Hall (23) and Totino Grace (22). The Indians are also chasing one of their own marks for consecutive wins. From 1990-93, Mahnomen won 44 straight games, a mark the Indians can get to within two of with another 14-win season. Mahnomen is tied for third overall with Stephen-Argyle Central in accumulating seven state titles. Winning tradition breeds intra-team competition and Mahnomen players are ready to get after it. Those returning to the starting lineup and more so, those ready for their first cracks. “We return a lot of talent and experience,” Clark, Jr. said. “Our younger players are eager for their turn to shine, as well. It will be important to not look too far ahead and focus on improving each week. It should be a fun season.” It’s hard not to have fun when wins have come like clockwork.
Mahnomen will employ their usual running attack and will do so behind an experienced line with four returning starters. The defensive line returns four of five starters also making for a stiff wall in the trenches. Defense and ball control is a patented way to win football games. “Our experience should also be a strength for us.” Experience has passed to underclassmen, as well, with new players hitting the varsity field this year already poised with past game time. “Our younger players have seen a lot of playing time the last couple of years so we that should help with their confidence from the start. Although, we don’t have the overall speed we’ve had in the past, we have good depth in the skill positions.” The Indians’ depth will allow for a continual attack. “We should be able to have fresh legs running the ball behind our line.” The second level on defense is one area the state champions will need to get up to speed on the fly. “We do have holes to fill. Our Linebackers and secondary people will be starting for the first time. They will have to mature and develop as the season progresses. The strong defensive line should help make their transition easier. “I don’t think our defense will be as dominant early on like last year but we expect them to be pretty darn tough at the end of the year. We are pretty thin at some positions so developing depth as the season goes along will be another key.” Tom Pavek returns at quarterback, but will start the season minus one weapon – receiver Kody Lefebvre.

TITANS
The Norman County East/ Ulen-Hitterdal Titans have a quarterback battle to command under center with a onetwo punch ready to move the ball in the backfield. The Titans are the benefactors of nine returning starters, including running back Hunter Thompson, who ran for nearly 1,000 yards last season. Fellow senior Patrick Busby should challenge the 1,000-yard mark, as well. The offensive line will be centered around the experienced Noah Stene, Mason Okke and Jordan Halvorson. “We will be returning a lot of starters from last year’s team, so we are expecting good things both offensively and defensively,” Head Coach Dustin Flaten said. “We will look for Thompson and Busby to be handling most of our carries this year but Matt Lee and Isaac Kraft will be getting a lot of touches also.” Junior, Colby Neset and sophomore Brett Braseth are in a heated competition for the quarterback position. “Both are very capable of leading our offense at that position,” Flaten said. Win-E-Mac won the North Tri-County Conference last year with a 7-0 mark, but will battle to retain supremacy after losing starters to graduation. Waubun is on the upsurge in the conference and is favored early, with section juggernaut Ada-Borup always in the mix. NCE/U-H and Waubun meet up at Fargodome Sept. 27 in a crucial matchup. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo left the Tri-County and will play in the Top of the State Conference this year. Prior to last season’s 3-6 mark, the Titans were 5-5 in 2012-13 and posted their last season mark above .500 in 2011-12 going 6-3, but lost their opening playoff game in overtime to Hillcrest Lutheran Academy 20-14. Since the schools created the co-op, a playoff victory has been elusive. The Titans ended last season on a three-game skid and will look to turn that around right away. Section 6 - Nine Man football has been in the hands of Ada-Borup every year since the 2008-09 season other than one hiccup when the Cougars lost to Nevis in 2012-13. Despite some growing pains this year for the Cougars the road to the state playoffs runs through Ada-Borup. NCE/U-H opens the season at home in a non-conference game versus Sacred HeartClimax-Fisher, at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 28 in Ulen. NCE/UH defeated SH-C-F 49-6 in last year’s opener. SH-C-F is in the second year of a co-op between the three schools.

The section title has been elusive for teams other than the Ada-Borup cougers in Section 6 the past six seasons. The Waubun Bombers feel 2014-15 is the year they make a push for a state appearance.
Bombers led by 1,000-yard rushing duo BY ROBERT WILLIAMS
rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com
The Waubun Bombers look to break the hold on Section 6, 9-man football that has been under the grip of rivals AdaBorup for half a decade. “Ada-Borup has had a stranglehold on the Section,” Bombers’ Head Coach Paul Clark said. “No matter what they lose, they always seem to come up with a group of great athletes. I would put them as a top contender this year as always, as well as Norman County East/Ulen-Hitterdal, Fergus Falls Hillcrest and Nevis.” Ada-Borup has won the section title five of the last six seasons, including knocking Waubun out with a 17-8 section final victory at FargoDome last year. Ada-Borup is under a new head coach Paul Tinjum and
will need to retool after losing their top three offensive weapons. Waubun had a successful 7-4 campaign in 2013 and return two 1,000-yard rushers in fullback Ryan Weber and quarterback Jordan Spaeth. “Not many schools our size can say they have that kind of yardage coming back.” The senior duo will be the backbone of the Bombers’ option offense. “It makes coaching a lot easier when there is experience at those two positions. They obviously had great seasons last year; we are hoping for more this season from them. “We had a strong finish last year and we return a lot of players that played significant minutes for us last year,” said Clark. “We had a good turnout for summer workouts, including a great

Lakers coming off a record breaking year BY ROBERT WILLIAMS
rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com
The Lakers come off a 9-2 season and a trip to the state quarterfinals in Class 4A having lost a number of key contributors from last year’s team, most notably at the quarterback position. Last season, Michael Herzog amassed a career total of 326 points to move past former all-time leading scorer Todd Steinmetz’ 278, while the Laker senior also left as DLHS’ second all-time leading rusher with 3,158 yards, which trails only Corey Brogren’s 3,933 yards. Herzog’s 601 rushes is also a Laker all-time record. To say there is an opening behind center for Detroit Lakes is an understatement. The task in 2014 was earned by senior Christian Hedstrom, who did see playing time at the position in 2013 filling in for Herzog, as DL’s scoring leader nursed a repaired ACL in his knee. Also lost to graduation was senior running back Jarett Nosal, who was a horse in the backfield. Filling big shoes is the name of the game in high school football and it is happening in every practice with every team. There are plenty of players who have waited their turn to get on the gridiron and while that is a wild card in the preseason, that’s why kids play the game. This year’s backfield will be by a committee of seniors with Sam Champa, Forrest Schleske and Parker Jackson getting the ball early with a number of other potential backs getting touches. Multi-sport star Ryan Cihak will make plays on both sides of the ball. “We’ll find a way,” Head Coach Flint Motschenbacher said. “We may not be pound, pound, but we’ll find a way.” DL will throw when necessary but there won’t be a ton of surprises when the red and white line up with the ball. DL has a proven system that works. “We’re really greenhorns… I think the potential is there. It’s just a matter of putting it together and finding out what our niche is going to be on offense.” The offensive line returns the core in the middle and early season success will depend on the defensive play as the offense formulates a strategy with all the new faces. “Hopefully that’s going to be our strength – the front seven.” DL suffered a key loss on the line when two-way starting lineman and state wrestling heavyweight James Huwe injured the meniscus in his knee and is questionable for the opening game. “We had some depth in the O-line but we kind of took a hit when we lost James. There’s a chance we might get him back.” Huwe may be able to play

on the knee, depending on a further diagnosis and the star senior’s pain tolerance. “Everything is really a work in progress. We’re really inexperienced at some spots but they’ll get better. That’s our goal is to be good football team by the end of the year. Our goal is to get better each day and each game.” That has been the case for DL the past two seasons with a combined record of 19-3 and this year’s squad will retool to try to duplicate that success. The Lakers broke a 10-year state playoff drought the last two years, with back-to-back
trips to the Class 4A state quarterfinals. 2013 was a year for school records. Motschenbacher catapulted past former mentor Rick Manke on the Laker all-time win list last season. Motschenbacher’s all-time record now stands at 122-46, while Manke registered a lofty 116-31 record. The Lakers open up at home versus Fargo North, Friday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. at Mollberg Field. DL won last year’s opener at North 35-20. “It was a tough game for
three quarters and then we finally got going. We got it figured out and started playing in the fourth quarter.” With an experienced coaching staff and players hungry for playing time, this year’s football team should find ways to adjust on the fly and continue the competitive legacy of Laker football. One game to watch is the battle for the paddle with Perham during week seven on Friday, Oct. 10 in Perham. Since reinstating the highway 10 rivalry three years ago, the road team has won each contest.
That game has typically been a factor at the top of the Heart O’ Lakes Conference - North standings. DL shared the title last year with Park Rapids, both with 5-1 marks. The Lakers were the 2012-13 champs with a 6-0 mark. Detroit Lakes 2013 Season stats: 9-2.

Blaine Gorton, right, returns as the starting quarterback in Pelican Rapids. The Vikings need to replace departed running back Ryan Bruggeman, who put up huge numbers in 2013-14. That job falls to Gauge Lee and Nick Thompson and a trio of returning lineman. of the areas that the coaching staff will need to focus on early in the season. “We are optimistic that we can have a very good football # 1 2 3 7 11 12 13 16 17 18 19 22 27 28 34 44 50 51 52 53 54 55 57 58 59 62 64 65 67 70 74 76 78 80 83 84 87

PELICAN RAPIDS
Dave Haugen enters his 19th year as head coach in Pelican Rapids coming off a 6-4 season that landed the Vikings in third place in the Heart O’ Lakes Classic Conference standings behind co-champions Hawley and Breckenridge. Haugen is 93-76 overall and returns six starters on both sides of the ball, with 14 total returning letter winners. Offensively, Pelican Rapids will be led by returning starting quarterback Blaine Gorton. “It’s always good to have your quarterback returning,” Haugen said. “Blaine played very well in a lot of ways last year. If he can build off of his experience and successes from a year ago he’ll have a very good senior season.” The big hole in the offense is the absence of senior Ryan Bruggeman, who had a monster year running the ball in 2013. Bruggeman was the Heart O’ Lakes Most Valuable Player. “We didn’t graduate a large senior class but they filled vital roles. Some roles were easy to see and some were pretty subtle so we’ll need to find players to fill those roles.” Those replacements in the backfield all have good speed. Combined with a line that can get outside and add to the overall team speed, Pelican Rapids should be able to move the ball. Gauge Lee started alongside Bruggeman in the backfield last year and also started at defensive back. “Gauge has good speed and we’ll rely on him on both sides of the ball.” Nick Thompson started on offense and defense last year and is slated as the fullback and linebacker this year. “I expect that his experience will carry over to this season allowing him to play more aggressively and be a good leader for us.” Three seniors anchor the offensive line: Thomas Brynildson, Daniel Halbakken and Peter Svare. “We expect them to do a great job on the line of scrimmage and establish the running game for us.” According to Haugen, depth is going to be an issue. Developing players that can have the potential to back-up at several positions will be one

Hawley (Minn.) High School football coach Peder Naatz remembers the brother of a player screeching his car within 8 feet of Naatz during a postgame radio interview, glaring at him, saying a few words and flooring the car in reverse to shower Naatz in gravel and rocks. Two years later, the same person mocked Naatz’s heritage from the sidewalk as he drove by. All because Naatz didn’t play the man’s younger brother in the first half of a game due to in-school behavior issues. “We were trying to make sure our kids were toeing the line in school and setting a positive example for others and he fell short,” Naatz said. This comes with the territory of being a high school varsity coach. With the whistle around the neck comes the second-guessing of every decision, the yells from the crowd, a yearly hope of a contract renewal and the reminder of every mistake. That’s why they get paid the big bucks. Only, they don’t. Naatz made $4,998 last season. Hawley went 10-2 and lost in the Minnesota Class 2A state semifinals. Between 100-plus hours of watching film and 216 hours of practice, Naatz estimated he worked more than 500 hours outside of his regular job for the football season. Moorhead head boys hockey coach Jon Ammerman wasn’t exactly sure how much money he was paid for coaching the Spuds in 2013-14, his first season as coach. He doesn’t care that the $4,961 came out to $6.79 an hour for the roughly 730 hours he put in the 18½ weeks. According to Moorhead athletic director Dean Haugo, pay is based on experience, length of season, number of students, liability, spectator interest (pressure), equipment and preparation time. Those hours don’t include summer camps, the three overnight trips Moorhead took and the youth hockey meetings. Ammerman still didn’t care. “I’m teaching and coaching at the high school I graduated from,” Ammerman said. “I feel extremely fortunate.” Brad Strand made $6,581 to take the Fergus Falls High School girls basketball team to the Class 3A semifinals and a third-place finish in the state last season, losing two of the 32 games his team played. If there’s anyone who can do the math, it’s a math teacher like Strand. He broke it down to 747 hours of work during the season, and around 250 in the offseason for the basketball season. That’s $6.60 an hour. “I have always told my wife that when I start coaching for money then I better hang it up and let somebody else do the job,” Strand said. “It is all about the relationships that are built, because we definitely spend a great number of hours together. I have been a head coach for 24 years and it has really been a great experience. I wouldn’t trade all the hours that I have had the opportunity to spend with the kids I coach for anything.” Mahnomen High School’s football team has the longest active winning streak in the state of Minnesota at 28 games, including two Class 1A state titles. Indians coach John Clark Jr. got about $4,000 per season for that. Is it worth the sacrifice of having Thanksgiving dinner at Old Country Buffet because the Indians are at state? To people like Clark Jr. it is. “Wasn’t bad, but not the same as mom’s cooking,” Clark Jr. said. “I love the kids first and foremost. I really enjoy watching them grow as athletes and people. I think the only way you coach is if you have passion for the game. Other than that, we coach because we’re downright nuts.” Naatz coached a football game the same week he buried his father. His reason why didn’t sound nuts at all. “I coach because I know what athletics can do for a person,” Naatz said. “The thrill of seeing kids have success is a great feeling. That success doesn’t necessarily mean winning. They can be successful if they’ve earned a spot on the special teams, been moved up to varsity during the season or for the playoffs as a freshman. “It can mean earning a letter, making a good play or even properly executing a block that leads to a gain. There are thousands of little examples of successes each year and to see them happen is pretty cool.”

There is a fresh look in Perham as the Yellowjackets have a lot of holes to fill on both sides of the ball. Perham will feature a third quarterback in three seasons as Mason Malikowski takes over under center following in the footsteps of talented leaders Eli Beachy and Perham record holder Jordan Hein. Nearly all the skill positions will see new players handling the ball, but Perham has a history of competitive play and will be in the running of the Heart O’ Lakes Northern Conference.

YELLOWJACKETS
After consecutive state tournament appearances 2011-12, the Perham football team was bounced in the section semifinals last year by Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton and also lost a core group of seniors at critical positions leaving this year’s squad in an underdog role. Perham lost 18 seniors to graduation. “It will be a changing of many guards for us this year,” Head Coach Mike Jordahl said. “We do have a bunch of
great kids coming in though.” Gone are starting quarterback Eli Beachy (561 yards rushing, 420 passing), and starting running back Payton Jordahl (952 yards, 14 touchdowns). Two of those touchdowns were on defensive fumble returns which Jordahl recorded in back-toback games last year. Jordahl is the only player in recorded Perham football history to return more than one fumble for a score in a season. The only other season where two fumbles were returned for touchdowns was in 1961. Perham will need to replace
