“I’d love to defend my title, but qualifying for the U.S. Am is a big thing for me, my biggest accomplishment, yet. ” — Beau Hanson
Hanson qualifies for U.S. Am, will not defend P-P title

here are very few things which would have prevented Frazee’s Beau Hanson from trying to defend his 2012 Pine to Palm championship, one of them happened Aug. 29, at the Fargo Country Club.
Shooting a one-under par 143 in two rounds of play, Hanson won the qualifying tournament and earned a berth in his first U.S. Amateur Championship Tournament. Hanson now advances to the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass., Aug. 12-18. “I’d love to defend my (Pine to Palm) title, but qualifying for the U.S. Am is a big thing for me,” Hanson said. “It’s my biggest accomplishment, yet.” Hanson’s qualifying rounds included playing the same front nine at the Fargo Country Club four times during the Aug. 29 rounds. A slow start, which included four bogeys and two birdies on his first nine, was overcome after he was able to settle in and tie for the lead after the first 18 holes. “I thought I was going to shoot 90 after the first two holes, where I even topped a ball,” Hanson said. “But then I got into a groove and settled down.” Hanson will still play his qualifying rounds at the Pine to Palm, with the goal of still being able to medal. But he will forego any match play if he qualifies. 4
Beau Hanson has been a mainstay at the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament, but will miss match play and the right to defend his 2012 title after qualifying for the U.S. Am.. “I don’t want to take a spot away from anyone, so I just want to go out and try to medal,” the Frazee golfer said. Hanson won the 2012 title after beating University of Minnesota’s David Haley Jr. 4 and 3, thus earning him a free berth into the 81st Pine to Palm Golf Tournament, which starts Monday, Aug. 5, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 11. The U.S. Am starts Monday, Aug. 12, which is one day after the Pine to Palm finals.

The Frazee native played for the Odessa (Texas) College men’s golf team, which had a dominating season and finished as NJCAA National runner-up. The Wrangler men’s golf team won their regional tournament, the Texas State championship, the District II title and the WJCAC banner. Hanson was a regular starter for the Odessa squad, which enabled him to log in the most golf rounds of his career in that amount of time. “At first, I was just trying to get better

David Haley Jr. was the 2012 Pine to Palm runner-up. He was one of several University of Minnesota Gophers playing. and make the team,” Hanson said. “My game has improved a lot and I was able to play as a starter on the team for most of the season.” The competition Hanson played against was the best he’s faced, so being consistent in each and every tournament was vital. “Any one team has a chance to win every tournament,” Hanson said. “Everyone is so consistent on that level. There’s a lot more pressure to produce.” The Texas courses are also longer than Hanson was used to playing in Minnesota, so his length has increased. His putting also had to be more accurate, since the courses in Texas are much harder and the greens much faster. “Most of the fairways here are not tight, but longer,” Hanson said. “My long game is much better and I improved my short game, as well.” Hanson’s approach last year during the Pine to Palm was to be confident and aggressive. His goal was to make as many birdies as possible and put the pressure on his opponents. 6
It worked to perfection and continued through to the finals against Haley, as Hanson birdied the first two holes in the championship match to gain the early edge. He will take a similar approach at the U.S. Am and use his practice rounds as a serious tool. “My ultimate goal is to win it all,” Hanson said. “But the first step is to qualify for match play. I’ve proven I am pretty good in match play, so I will need to develop a game plan during the practice rounds.” Field to be deep as ever Much like last year, this year’s Championship field will feature some top young golfers, coming from Division I and II colleges from all over the U.S. There will be nine of the 11 U of M Gopher golfers competing, according to head coach John Carlson, while there will be plenty of other college colored golfbags scattered around the course during the Pine to Palm week. “It’s going to be another strong field in all the divisions,” said first-year

Pine to Palm committee chairman Jim Bruflodt. “We have been around 470 to 480 golfers for the last few years and should be around that number again.” Other division champions expected back to defend their titles include MidAm’s A.J. Greff, Senior’s champion Scott Linnerooth and Super Seniors’ Chuck Renner. Jake Miller was the 2012 Flight Medalist, as well. Bruflodt also assures the field the greens which were affected by the rough winter will be more than ready to take on the wear and tear of Pine to Palm week. “The committee purchased a new seeder for the greens and that should be a big improvement, I see the greens being more than ready by the time the tournament rolls around,” the new chairman said. Otherwise, the tournament will have the same tradition and feel to it, something which has been felt 81 years ago. The tradition continues starting Monday, Aug. 5. ❖

“It was a fast 10 years, that’s for sure.” — Bob Gorden
Gorden ends Pine to Palm chairman 10-year reign Bruflodt 1st 2nd generation chairman

or the last decade, summers for Bob Gorden were as busy as any time of the year.
First, Gorden has built such a storied high school boys’ golf program power, that the Lakers have extended their season to mid-June, as they consistently played their way to the state meet and a couple Class 2A championships. After that, it was time for Gorden and his wife, Diane, to get elbow deep in Pine to Palm registrations as acting tournament chairman, a position he has held since 2003 – until this year. After 10 years as the Pine to Palm chairman, Gorden has passed that torch to fellow committee member Jim Bruflodt. “It was a fast 10 years, that’s for sure,” Gorden said. “But during that time, golf really consumed Diane’s and my life. I just love the game of golf and our course (the Detroit Country Club), it’s been very important to me.” After taking over for Gordy Grabow as chairman in 2003, Gorden certainly has made his imprint on the 81-year-old golf tournament. The most noticeable mark he will have left is seen when the golfers turn on their computers. Online registration is now responsible for up to 80-90 percent of registrations, which has taken the onus of paperwork 8

Gorden ended his time as Pine to Palm chairman after 10 years. almost right out of the equation. “Online registration speeds up the process,” Gorden said. “We no longer have to stuff envelopes and run checks to the bank. It’s not as taxing now.” Another big change or changes came with the addition of the Mid-Am and

Super Seniors divisions. The Mid-Am came first and has enjoyed progressive growth in its four years of existence, as has the Super Seniors. “I thought it was a good move for the tournament,” Gorden said. “Giving those players their own tournament where

they can play golfers their own age has worked out well. “The Mid-Am (45 and older) is a good transition from playing Championship to Seniors (55 and older).” With the 32 divisions, including name and numbered flights, the field for the Pine to Palm has consistently topped the 400-plus mark through Gorden’s tenure. That, of course, makes for some serious work of getting everyone their tee times and having them all finish their rounds each day. Obviously, it’s not a one-man show. “The people on the committee have just been fabulous and each and every one does their job,” Gorden said. “The biggest thing we do is we always worry about the golfers.” Both the Gordens have taken over the awards portion of the tournament and Bob wants to become more involved in rulings. Although he has stepped down as chairman, Pine to Palm loyalists will still see plenty of the Gordens around during tournament week. Recalling some of his most memorable moments during his 10-year tenure, Gorden listed off Chris Braaten winning the title in 2004 and thus becoming the first DL native to do so. The range of golfers have also been evident, with Todd Hillier becoming the oldest Pine to Palm champion in 2010 and immediately followed by the youngest golfer to win the championship the next year in Connor Holland. “I’m still waiting for one of my former high school golfers to win it, though,” Gorden added. Time will tell on that one, but one can be assured Gorden will be around as a committee member when it does happen. Bruflodt first 2nd generation P-to-P chairman The first job Jim Bruflodt ever had during the Pine to Palm Tournament was picking up litter and paper as a kid. The first championship match he witnessed came in 1962 when Bob Finseth topped Pat Shansesy 3 and 2. His biggest influence for the tournament was his father Paul Bruflodt, who was tournament chairman from 1968-1973. 10
Jim Bruflodt (top) becomes the 10th Pine to Palm Chairman. His father (right) Paul Bruflodt was the chairman from 1968-73.
“One thing I remember was that all the golfers were characters and mostly just weekend golfers,” Jim Bruflodt said. “Times have changed.” When Bruflodt was asked to be on the committee by then chairman Leo Eilertson as one of the head rangers, that’s when he realized how important the committee really was. “They are all good at their jobs,” Bruflodt said. “Now as the chairman, I will rely on the committee. There isn’t enough time in one day for one person to run the entire tournament.” The days of when everything was done by hand are becoming more rare, as technology is taking over. But there still are lots of questions to be answered, either by phone call or email. “The thing about nowadays is people want an answer right away,” Bruflodt said. “Now, there are more demands and they can be answered quickly.” Bruflodt is more than experienced and confident taking over the chairman position from Gorden. “The biggest thing I learned from Bob is to think on your feet,” Bruflodt said. “I do have a good management background and learned how rather than overreact,

react.” Also being a second-generation chairman is also a privilege for Bruflodt. “I’m proud of the fact that I’m the first father/son chairman,” Bruflodt said. “There never was any set goals to carry on the legacy of my father; I just wanted to be a part of this tournament.” Challenges in which Bruflodt has already hit include the green damage which occurred during the winter and completing last-minute registrations. “The committee purchased a new seeder for the greens and that should be a big improvement, I see the greens being more than ready by the time the tournament rolls around,” the new chairman said. The biggest goal Bruflodt wants, though, is to make it through his first year as chairman running a successful tournament. “As chairman, I need to keep everything running and I have the committee to help me to do that,” Bruflodt said. “I hope when everything is said and done, that my dad will be proud of me for the job I’ve done.” The Pine to Palm Golf Tournament kicks off Monday, Aug. 5, with qualifying at the Detroit Country Club. ❖

“For sure, this is my biggest win.” — Beau Hanson, 2012 Pine to Palm champion
Hanson takes 80th P-P title Frazee golfer tops Haley Jr. in finals
E
STORY BY BRIAN WIERIMA • PHOTOS BY BRIAN BASHAM
ver since he was caddying for his father in the Pine to Palm as an 11-year-old aspiring golfer, Frazee’s Beau Hanson has been creating memories of the prestigious golf tournament held at the Detroit Country Club in Detroit Lakes.
But on Sunday, Hanson made a memory that trumps them all. A 30-foot birdie putt on hole 11 keyed a 4 and 3 victory for Hanson over University of Minnesota senior and Hilliard, Ohio native David Haley Jr. in the 80th Pine to Palm championship match. “It feels great to win it,” Hanson said. “It’s been a dream of mine ever since I was a kid. The Pine to Palm has been my favorite tournament and it’s great to win it.” Hanson’s road to the championship match was a long and arduous one, but his consistent play through the entire week was the main factor for making it through one of the toughest fields in tournament history, which saw a 147 qualifying cut mark. It all came together Sunday against Haley, who also was playing good, consistent golf. A quick start in the form of two wins on the first two holes, set the tone, as Hanson found shots to get out of trouble the entire match. Haley found trouble early, after he hit the right bunker on the first hole, while Hanson made birdie. 12

The Frazee golfer made par on the second to go 2-up, after Haley left his shot out of the rough on the deep end of the green. But that didn’t affect Haley, who made several comebacks throughout the tournament. “I was down before to some good golfers through the week, so I knew I was still capable of coming back,” Haley said. The Gopher golfer cut the deficit in half with a par on four, after Hanson three-putted for bogey. But hole five typified Hanson’s game throughout the match, after he found the right side bunker, while Haley was in the left rough, shy of the green. Hanson made a beautiful recovery out of the sand, landing his ball within 10 feet of the hole, while Haley left his birdie putt short to put the score back to 2-up. “I’ve been working a lot around the green and in the bunkers, so it worked out well this time,” Hanson said. A hiccup on hole six by Hanson on a missed five-foot putt halved the hole, as Haley won seven and eight with a birdie/ par to even the match. But the next three holes were the deciding factor in the match, as Hanson’s irons and putter put some separation between himself and Haley. Hanson almost drained a 45-50 foot eagle putt, as Haley pushed his past the hole and finished with par. A chip within three feet of the cup on 10 by Hanson put him 2-up, which led into the key 11th hole. Eyeing down an uphill 30-foot putt for birdie, Hanson was money, as Haley’s 10-foot attempt was once again short. “That putt was big,” Hanson said. “I knew I had to make it and I put a good stroke on it, along with a good line and it went in.” If a clutch birdie putt like that wasn’t enough, Hanson verified he was fighting hard for the championship, after making a fabulous chip out of the rough pin high and landing it about two feet from his target. Haley made a nice attempt out of the trees, but he ended up three-putting to give Hanson a 4-up advantage. “He played well today and I didn’t play as well as I should have,” Haley said. 14
The two Pine to Palm finalists shake hands after Beau Hanson (left) won 4 and 3 over David Haley Jr. in last year’s championship match. “I wasn’t driving well and I missed some putts I normally make.” Haley did show off his woods by almost driving hole 13 for the eventual win, but it was too little too late, as they halved the par 3 14 and Hanson winning the 15 after the senior Gopher hit a tree, thus losing a stroke. The match ended 4 and 3. With the DCC course being Hanson’s home turf and the Pine to Palm being his favorite tournament, his approach to the championship match was much like any other he played in. “I was pretty casual and I approached it like any other tournament,” Hanson said. “I was practicing my putting 25 minutes before the match like I always do. I wasn’t feeling nervous at all.” It showed, as Hanson repeatedly was able to bail himself out of trouble when he had a rare errant shot. Even with the lead, he kept his head. “I wasn’t going to get too far ahead of
| The Pine to Palm GOLF TOURAMENT — August 5-11, 2013
myself after I built a lead,” Hanson said. “I just wanted to keep it going.” Hanson was a 2 and 1 victor over Eden Prairie’s Max Rosenthal in the morning semifinal match, while Haley beat South Dakota State’s Lukas Davison 1-up. Growing up on the DCC golf course and now becoming a part of its storied history, makes this victory the biggest of Hanson’s career, which even tops his 2010 Class 1A state championship. “For sure, this is my biggest win,” said Hanson, who will be attending and playing golf at Odessa College, Texas. “My mom and dad are pretty proud, too.” ❖

strong start wasn’t needed for A.J. Greff all week, after he made bogey on the first hole in all four of his Pine to Palm Mid-Am matches at the Detroit Country Club.
But none of those bogeys mattered to Greff, who played all the way to his first Pine to Palm championship, after winning the Mid-Am title match over Fargo’s Kent Spriggs 3-up.
“It was a good omen,” Greff said of his auspicious starts to all of his Mid-Am matches. “But it feels great to win the championship, because it’s been a long, grueling week.” Greff, who was playing in his third Pine to Palm Tournament, rebounded on hole two with a par to bring the match back to even with Spriggs. With a par win on hole four and a pair of birdie victories on five and seven, Greff was able to make the turn 3-up. “After that, I was just trying to keep the ball in play,” Greff added. “I was aim-
ing for fairways and greens and usually had just two putts on the greens.” Greff was consistent, shooting one over on each the front and back nine holes, while staying out of trouble to not allow Spriggs a chance to rally back. “I also have to give kudos to my caddy, Larry Wenaas, who gave me some very good reads on the course,” Greff said. Greff preceded his Pine to Palm MidAm championship with a Seniors title during the KX Amateur Tournament in Fargo earlier in the summer. ❖

“I had some good shots and made serval shots close to the hole.” — Scott Linnerooth
Linnerooth secures first title in Pine to Palm Seniors
A
STORY BY BRIAN WIERIMA • PHOTO BY BRIAN BASHAM
string of wins on holes nine through 12 secured Scott Linnerooth’s first Pine to Palm Senior’s championship Sunday at the Detroit Country Club. Linnerooth made three birdies and a par during his streak to take a commanding 4-up lead on runner-up Spencer Clark, to eventually win 3 and 1. The golfer from Bozeman, Mont., is a 31-year Pine to Palm competitor and before this tournament had not won a title or even medalist honors. He did both this week, after earning co-medalist laurels, along with Fargo’s Tim Rubis, with an even par 71. “It feels good,” Linnerooth said of his Senior’s sweep. “It was a great time playing with Spencer and the consolation group we played with today. “It’s also a bonus I don’t have to qualify next year.” Linnerooth started his Senior’s trek with a 2 and 1 win over Lute Simley, then defeated Don Nelson handily 5 and 3. The showdown of the co-medalists went down Saturday, as Linnerooth defeated Rubis in a close match. In the title match, Linnerooth broke a tie after eight by winning nine, 11 and 12 by birdie, while making par on 10 for a 4-up margin. “I had some good shots and made several shots close to the hole,” Linnerooth added. “My putter also was working out well this week.” Defending champion Rob Harris was beat by Clark in the semifinals. ❖ 20

Super Seniors is Renner’s again
Arizona golfer takes 2nd consecutive championship
B
STORY BY BRIAN WIERIMA • PHOTO BY BRIAN BASHAM
esides one glitch showing up on Chuck Renner’s Pine to Palm Super Senior’s resume’, the three-year-old division has literally belonged to the softspoken golfer from Phoenix, Ariz.
That one glitch came in the inaugural year of the Super Seniors, as Renner was defeated by Detroit Lakes Paul Krueger in the championship match. Since then, Renner has won all three medalist honors. Now add the last two Super Seniors championships to his Super Senior domination list. Renner exacted revenge on Krueger Sunday by winning 4 and 3 to complete his back-to-back medalist-championship sweep at the Detroit Country Club. “It is totally unexpected,” Renner said of his dominating success in the Super Seniors. “All I was trying to accomplish was my two goals, which is make good decisions and good swings.” Renner accomplished both consistently and he successfully made a calculated gamble early in the week and won. After earning the right to forgo qualifying by winning the 2011 Super Seniors championship, he decided to go for the medalist three-peat instead. Mission accomplished. Renner won the medalist honors by shooting a one-under par 70, then proceeded to make his way through bracket play with a 3 and 2 win over Dr. Rick Render (his 2011 championship opponent), a 2-up victory over Conrad Lopes and a win over two-time Seniors champion Joe Mayer in the semifinals. Renner started early in his championship match with Krueger, by placing his wedge shot from about 89 yards out to within six feet of the cup on hole two. Things continued well for Renner and by hole 12, he had a 6-up advantage. “Paul wasn’t his usual self,” Renner
Chuck Renner of Phoenix, Ariz., putts during his Pine to Palm Super Seniors championship match with Detroit Lakes’ Paul Krueger. Renner won 4 and 3. said. “It wasn’t the usual Paul Krueger kind of round and I just happened to be playing extremely well.” Krueger was able to make birdies on 13 and 14 to cut into the deficit, but Renner
finished off the DL golfer by hole 16. “I shot 2-under, so this is one of the best rounds I’ve played in a while,” Renner said. “It’s nice to accomplish my goals, although it’s quite unexpected.” ❖
