Scoring a strength for Lady Hornets BY BRIAN WIERIMA
bwierima@dlnewspapers.com
Despite losing their all-time leading scorer and one of their best defenders, the Frazee girls’ basketball team’s expectations remain as loftier as ever. Gone is Alexis Tappe’s 1,600-plus career points, but Frazee head coach Dave Conzemius will be able to lean on another Tappe to lead the Lady Hornets for the 2013-14 season. Senior Taylor Tappe was named Heart O’Lakes All-Conference Honorable Mentioned as one of the Lady Hornets’ top forwards. But this season, opponents will have to contain Taylor Tappe as Frazee’s main ball handler from the point guard position, which will help give the offense more consistency. “During the summer league play, we started to realize Taylor could bring the ball up the floor well,” Conzemius said. “She has great experience, since she’s been playing varsity since her freshman season. “But Taylor is so unselfish and didn’t hesitate taking on the point guard duties after we asked her to.” The Lady Hornets will not have a problem ringing up big numbers on the scoreboard, with a nice contingent of offensive talent back. Junior Kennady Barlund returns
after averaging 7.2 points per game and will have an expanded scoring role. “Kennady is a great shooter and can shoot the three well,” Conzemius said. “She also can pull up and drive to the basket, as well.” Junior guard Josi Tappe returns her 8.3 ppg from last season. Although she wasn’t a starter last season, she still earned All-Conference honors and will be a huge boost from the perimeter. “Josi has unlimited offensive ability,” Conzemius said. “She can create her shot off the dribble and when defenses start double teaming her, she will be able to find her teammates.” With those three players forming a solid nucleus, Conzemius will have the luxury of playing up to five other players consistently. “All eight players can hit their shot anytime,” the Frazee coach said. Three other good perimeter shooters include junior Mandy Donahue, sophomore Whitney Janu and junior Katie Smith. “Katie gives us a high-energy defensive player and Whitney will be our tallest player at 5-11,” Conzemius said. “Then we have the Oswald twins (Hailee and Madison) who are sophomores. Hailee can be one of our best outside shooters, while Madison is
a great ball handler and can back up Taylor.” With points not being much of a concern, defense and rebounding will key the Lady Hornets’ success. The defensive side of the floor will be a work in progress, along with rebounding. “We need to work on our defense, but that is correctable,” Conzemius said. “But I know we’ll be able to score.” With the notion of losing Alexis Tappe, some outsiders may feel Frazee will be under construction, but Conzemius doesn’t think his team will fall back any steps. “A lot of people don’t expect us to do much this season, but I think

Frazee matmen gear up for another run BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
The 2012-13 season produced the Frazee wrestling team’s 10th trip to the Class 1A state finals, coming up just short to Jackson County Central for championship honors. But don’t fret for the Hornets, too much, as Frazee is primed for yet another run, with their first six wrestlers returning. It will be quite a start for the Hornets, who will have six quality wrestlers to start off matches, which will lead into a bit more inexperience in the latter weights, but with good potential of having a nice lead as a cushion. “We’re hoping to get the other team in a big hole, with our experienced (lighter) weights,” said Frazee head coach John Barlund. “We have some good talent in our lower weights who did well on the JV last year, but we’re just a little inexperienced there.” But teams will have to deal with an onslaught of bonus points headed by Frazee’s first six wrestlers, which included freshman Tanner Reetz (113), sophomore Grant Jepson (120), junior Byron Byer (113), sophomore Ethan Byer (113), junior Austin Skillings (126) and senior Hunter Sorenson (138).
The majority of those half dozen Hornets have individual state experience and which is key to Frazee’s No. 2 Class 1A state ranking according to The Guillotine, behind No. 1 JCC. “We do have a good kid at every weight, though,” Barlund said. “We have kids who are good at pinning their opponents, with the two Byer kids very good with their pinning moves.” The Hornets have a total of six wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight classes.
They include Reetz (sixth, 113), Byron Byer (sixth, 120), Jepson (10th, 126), Skillings (fifth, 138), Kody VanDenEykel (seventh, 182) and Garrett Malstrom (sixth, 285). In a change to the conference tournament, the Heart O’Lakes and MidState will combine as one conference tournament, which will be held in Staples Jan. 24-25, as an individual bracket format.

Fly Girls have state meet in their sites BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
For four out of the last five years, the Frazee Fly Girls Dance Team has boasted state tournament berths in Jazz, but last year, the High Kick squad made their first appearance. It’s a trend Frazee Dance Team coach Theresa Fett wants to continue. “I feel these teams are better than last year,” Fett said. “The more experience the dancers have in the state meet, the less the nerves they have.” There will be some new dancers on the high kick team, but after strong showings in junior varsity in 2012-13, the inexperience should not be a problem. The Fly Girls do have four seniors returning with vast seasoning and all will hold the leadership role on both teams. The seniors include Hailey Jutz, Ashley Laine, Cheyanne Hart and Becca Sorlien-Riewer. “Hailey has been on varsity since her eighth grade year and is very talented, while Ashley is a powerhouse and strong leaper,” Fett said.
“Cheyanne has been dancing on varsity since her freshman year and has a lot of studio dance experience. Becca is also continuing to grow as a dancer, while all bring something different to the table.” The High Kick team will have an entertaining theme which is entitled “Taking Care of Business.” “They will be dressed like nerdy secretaries and dancing to some lively music,” Fett included. The Jazz theme will be more serious, which a tint of darkness to it. It’s entitled “A Little Party Never Killed Anyone”, which is spawned out of the “Great Gatsby.”
The keys will be to polish up every week and continue to progress in their scores. “We want to be in the top three in the section for both teams (which means a state berth),” Fett said. The Fly Girls will have 24 dancers on High Kick and 13 on Jazz, with youth coming up through the ranks in sophomores Jaden Ketter and Sarah Wendt and freshman Kaitlyn Borah. “We have strong numbers out for JV, so there are no worries of having to have to rebuild,” Fett said. Julie Wake is a new assistant dance coach, along with Kelsey Hoff.

Laker gymnasts have high hopes this season BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There will be some crazy depth for the 2013-14 Detroit Lakes gymnastics team, with the majority of the gymnasts still underclassmen. Even though the Lakers will employ a very youthful lineup each night, the majority of the gymnasts have strong veteran experience, along with topend skills, which will make them a favorite in each of their meets. “I will have to be creative setting the lineups and what gymnast will compete in what event, but that’s going to be fun,” said DL head coach Steve Zamzo. “My challenge is going to be able to get all the gymnasts competing in meets.” The Lakers will have at least a dozen gymnasts who can compete on the varsity level and not just perform, but perform well. There will be a handful of consistent contributors who will also go all-around, led by freshman Molly Lyngaas, who finished sixth overall in the Class 1A state all-around meet last year, while taking seventh on vault, 10th on bars and 14th on beam. “Molly will be our top all-around gymnast,” Zamzo said. “We’ll also have three juniors who have been competing on varsity since seventh grade being important contributors.” Those juniors include Hannah Okeson, Allison Berg and Katie Crawford. Berg had a solid 2012-13 season and capped her season by taking 29th in the state meet on vault. Crawford will also be one of DL’s all-around performers, as well as eighth graders Emma Disse and Alexis Ostlie. “We will be still mixing and matching our gymnasts with their events, since we have 12 who have varsity caliber talent,” Zamzo said. The schedule will also give the Zamzo and his coaching staff the ability to fully utilize all their gymnasts. There will be two meets schedule for Dec. 7, where the regular varsity will compete in the St. Cloud Apollo
DETROIT LAKES GYMNASTICS team: Row 1: Mathia Olds, Claire Nelmark, Hannah Okeson, Allison Berg, Katrina Okeson, McKayla St. Claire, Molly Lyngaas, Cassidy Ziegler, Jordyn Peterson, Hannah Brady, Brooke Saunders. Row 2: Cortney Stiyer, Cora Okeson, Emma Disse, Lexi Yliniemi, Leah Chavez, Katie Crawford, Amy Waller, Kayla Wendt, Danielle Kulka-Fain, Britian Holter, Johanna Jernberg, Alexis Ostlie meet, which attracts some of the best teams in the state, while the normal junior varsity squad will travel to the Morris meet. There will also be a couple of meets where the junior varsity will compete against the other teams’ varsity. The Laker lineup will be billowing with talent, which also includes freshmen Johanna Jernberg, Leah Chavez, senior Claire Nelmark, seventh graders Cora Okeson, Lexi Yliniemi, sophomore Jordyn Peterson and freshman Mathia Olds. The Lakers also will have a couple of Frazee gymnasts on the team, after the joined cooperation between the two schools. They include freshman Cassidy Ziegler and senior Hannah Brady. As per every season, as well, the grand rivalry between the Lakers and Perham will heat on. With the big turnover on the
coaching staff and the transition of new Yellowjacket head coach Jenna Schmitz from ousted Charlie Fleck, this rivalry remains strong and even more interesting. But it’s not one in which Zamzo and the Lakers will think has changed because of the changes in Perham. “Charlie is a great gymnastics coach and he knew how to get the most out of his girls,” Zamzo said. “But Perham will still be very good and Jenna is a very capable head coach. “They won’t give up anything to us and we are not taking anything for granted.” Alexandria also enters Section 8-1A, as the Cardinals also will prove to be tough contenders for state berths. The Lakers will open their season in the Jackie Mann meet in Perham Saturday and open their home schedule Dec. 14, with Park Rapids visiting the Flyers Gymnastics Facility.
The 2013-14 Detroit Lakes gymnastics schedule: November 30 at Perham December 7 at Morris (JV team) 7 at St. Cloud Apollo (Varsity) 10 at Bemidji 14 Park Rapids 20 at Perham January 3 at Fergus Falls 4 at Fargo North 7 Little Falls 11 at Moorhead 14 Moorhead 16 at Park Rapids 17 Perham 25 True Team TBD 28 at Park Rapids February 1 Bemidji 15 Section meet TBD.

Roles change for young Lakers Team will be experienced for 2013-14 season BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There will be plenty of experience back for the Detroit Lakes boys’ basketball, but not necessarily in the same roles as they held for the 2012-13 season. Gone are the Lakers’ two leading scorers in 2013 seniors Kirk McLeod (411 points) and Derek Long (386), making some big holes to fill for the incoming 2013-14 squad. “We have four to five quality experienced players back, but they will be in new roles this year,” said DL head coach Robb Flint. “If you can have three to four players who can put up 20 points in a game, you have a pretty good team. “I don’t see that from us, yet.” The Lakers, who finished 14-13 last year, have goo athleticism back in junior guards Ryan Cihak and Jackson Lyngaas. Cihak finished last year with 285 points, while Lyngaas dumped in 201. “We’ll be looking at those two to be scorers for us and we have better depth with Connor Johnson, Christian Hedstrom and Corbin Duncan seeing time last year,” Flint said. “We have some decent shooters, but not as quick and explosive to the hoop as we were last season.” Trey Lyngaas and junior Sam Champa each will be DL’s frontcourt contributors, with Ben Hokanson bringing size (6-7), but inexperience. The Lakers will also have some bigger bodies in the middle with Nick Nordmark and Briton Thompson bringing some much needed muscle. That will key DL’s rebounding, in which is a focal point for Flint. “Rebounding will be a big deal for us, we are not overly athletic to out-

The Lakers will be contenders in the Mid-State Conference along with Crosby-Ironton, while Thief River Falls returns all its players from a strong team from 2012-13. Sartell is the defending section champion, while Fergus Falls is also a contender.

Improvement expected by Lakers DL’s offensive attack should be more potent BY BRIAN WIERIMA brianw@dlnewspapers.com
Detroit Lakes head girls’ basketball coach Mike Hoganson wants to flip what the 2012-13 season produced – namely, the Lakers’ 10-15 record. If the Lakers are able to pile up at least 15 victories in what is deemed as a “very challenging schedule”, good things are happening in DL. The Lakers are poised to be a very competitive team when they tip off the season Tuesday, with Mid-State Conference foe Pequot Lakes comes to town. “The chemistry in this group is spectacular, they really enjoy playing the game of basketball together,” Hoganson said. “Last year, (assistant coach Tim) Swenson’s defense was fantastic. “This year, we want to take it to the next level and have our defense create some offense.” The Lakers’ schedule includes two games apiece against teams who were near the 20-win mark in 2012-13, including section favorite Fergus Falls, Thief River Falls, Moorhead, Mid-State’s Staples-Motley and Pequot Lakes. Add in section newcomer Albany, which reached the 20-win mark last year, the Lakers will have to be on their game every single night. “It’s a very tough schedule, but I like that because it does prepare us for playoffs,” Hoganson said. There is plenty of experience returning in all aspects of DL’s game. The Lakers will be a very versatile group, led by senior Trisa Hutchinson, who has “evolved” from being strictly a post player to more of a wing/post. “Trisa has such good post moves, but now she has developed a good perimeter shot and she moves down the floor well,” Hoganson said. “When she’s playing the three (post), we can really get up and down the floor well.” The development of junior point guard Kyley Foster also will be vital to the team’s success and if her summer season indicated, DL should be in good hands. “Kyley has added good growth to her game over the summer,” Hoganson said. “She is a good enough athlete to push the tempo and now, she can penetrate the lane better and finish well. “Her point guard game is wellrounded.”
DETROIT LAKES GIRLS BASKETBALL team: Row 1: Danica Greer, Kyra Vagle, Halle Jordan, Kyley Foster, Hailey Jorgenson. Row 2: Trisa Hutchinson, Grace Swenson, Brooke Olson, Shay Nielsen, Lauren Lies The Lakers will also have the benefit of having some size and strength in the middle in the form of senior Brooke Olson (6-foot-2) and junior Shay Nielsen. Both will be go-to offensive options, as well as being strong on the boards. “Brooke now has a 15-foot jump shot, so adding a perimeter shot makes her that much better,” the DL coach said. “Shay is also quicker and is getting off the floor better, she is elevating much higher.” Senior center Lauren Lies also will be a solid contributor in the paint from her wing/post position. Adding depth in the backcourt and at point guard is junior Hailey Jorgenson, who will also add longrange shooting from beyond the threepoint arc. Sophomore Kyra Vagle also possesses good aim from three-point range, while sophomore forward
Grace Swenson will play the three or four position, but is another post player who can step out and drain shots. Guards junior Danica Greer and sophomore Halle Jordan provide backcourt depth, as well. One loss already is to junior center Annie Mettert, who tore an ACL and be lost for the season. “Our rebounding should be strong, which will help get us in our transition game,” Hoganson said. “We should be a more up-tempo team and would like to reach up in that mid-to-upper 50’s in scoring this year consistently.” The Lakers will also host their own Holiday Tournament, which is Dec. 2728. DL girls’ hockey taking steps of progress BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
The road through the 2012-13 season was a bit more bumpy than usual for the young Detroit Lakes girls’ hockey team, but it should help ensure a smoother one for this upcoming season. Although this year’s version of the Lakers will be young, but last years’ experience many of the youthful skaters picked up should pay off for the 2013-14 campaign, which starts Saturday at 2 p.m. when DL hosts Fergus Falls inside Kent Freeman Arena. “We were younger last year and we struggled knowing where we needed to get better,” said DL head coach Gretchen Norby. “These girls had a good offseason and worked on their game, I have definitely seen improvement in these younger girls.” The Lakers will return three seniors in Alexis Fritz, Annika Anderson and Sydney Haman. Norby will be looking to the senior trio to provide that leadership every young team needs. One area Norby is comfortable with going into the season is on the defen-

sive side of the ice. Fritz will return experience, along with sophomore Chandra Johnson, freshmen Emily Schiltz and Jamie Bollig. “I have good confidence in our defense, because we have a pretty good core,” Norby said. The Lakers are a bit shorthanded at goalie, but do have good experience back with the return of junior Veronica Badurek. Sophomore Haleigh Wenger decided to skate out instead of taking on goalie duties, thus adding depth to the forward attack. “We know what Veronica brings to us and I have seen much improvement and a better glove from her,” Norby said. “But being short in goalie now, there is always fear of injury or illness.” The big area of improvement needs to be scoring, an aspect the Lakers struggled with last year. Offseason work included a shooting challenge set up by Norby, but also working on the fundamentals to help create space for gaining better scoring opportunities, with the next step of

burying those chances in the net. The Lakers do return their secondleading goal scorer from last year in sophomore Hailey Sonstegard, who had eight goals, along with Haman (seven goals) and junior Emily Seebold (five). “The passing has been better and they are starting to play with their heads up, so they can see the ice,” Norby said. “Hailey Sonstegard has a heck of a shot and I think junior Randa Larsen can score some goals. “We will be playing three lines consistently, so there should be some spread out scoring.” Norby believes her team can contend with Alexandria and Fergus Falls in Section 8-1A and they will get their shot at both early, with the Otters coming in for the season opener Saturday and the Cardinals visiting Friday, Nov. 15, at 7:15 p.m. “Our eventual goal is to get back to state,” Norby said. “But it’s a grind of a season and these girls better be disciplined. My goal and the goal of the coaches, is to get better each week.” The Lakers’ assistants will be Jeff Norby and Bruce Raboin, while for-
mer longtime Laker girls’ head coach Dan Maloney returns to coach the junior varsity. The 2013-14 Detroit Lakes girls’ hockey schedule:

Lakers to feature new scoring lines There will be some new scoring blood on the Detroit Lakes boys’ hockey team this season, while Laker head coach Chris Denardo will keep working on the defensive side of the ice for the 2013-14 season. After some record-breaking marks set on the Bantam level last season, sophomore Jon Richards will take it to the next level as a varsity center. Richards is ranked as a top 50 sophomore and will join 2012-13 secondleading scorer junior Ryan DeConcini on a line which could potentially be a potent one. “Those two played Bantams and PeeWee hockey together, so they have that chemistry already,” Denardo said. “We’ll add (senior) Wilson Lysford, who was out last year with an injury, with them to form a pretty good line.” The Lakers will consistently use three lines and each will bring something different. DeConcini will provide varsity experience and a tendency to find the net after he had 15 goals and 14 assists last season. On the next line, senior Casey Paskey returns to provide a physicality as a strong defensive center, who will have an advantage of playing with DL’s fastest skater in junior Johnathan Hallisey. “Hallisey is our fastest player on the ice and senior Taylor Johnson also will provide some speed and grit on that line, as well,” Denardo said. “That line should be pretty fast.”
After missing the majority of the season with a concussion, senior Brandon Olson returns to center his line. “Brandon is also gritty and likes contact,” Denardo said. “He’s a player who grinds it out and will provide physicality to the game.” Junior Sam Boomgarden will provide size and physical play to Olson’s line, while other players who may see action include seniors Jake Fritz, Brady Crawford and center Joe Solberg. “Brady is one of our feistiest players and will be a penalty killer role for us and Joe is our biggest player and probably one of our smartest. He doesn’t make mental mistakes in the defensive zone.” Sophomore center Jake Anderson also will give the Lakers good size. Defense will be a focused point for the Lakers this season, after the team struggled in that aspect a year ago. Returning will be senior captain Michael Herrmann, along with senior teammates Dylan Bremseth and Ben Nelson. Juniors Cooper Heimark and Dahlen Olson will also be looked upon to provide defensive depth, along with sophomores Andrew Dahl, Josh Bollig and junior Tanner Steele. “I want to see improvement on our defense and I do feel good about our guys back there,” Denardo added. For the last three seasons, junior MacKenzie Steele has been DL’s goalie and for the first time, will have some

competition pushing for playing time. MacKenzie Steele certainly has plenty of minutes logged in after he basically played every minute the last two years. Sophomore Austin Fritz will be in the mix for playing time between the pipes, which will be a positive factor for Steele. “It’s good for Mack to have a few nights off and it’s also good to have someone pushing him,” Denardo said. “It looks like Mack also has some more confidence this season.” The Lakers will once again have one of their most competitive schedules. “We will be tested right away,” Denardo said. “I would like to see us win the Mid-State Conference and have a top four seed in the section.” Warroad and East Grand Forks will once again be favorites in Section 8-1A, as well. “It will be key for the guys to stay focused and not get too down if we drop a game or two,” Denardo said. The Lakers did suffer through some major injuries last season, which led to an 11-15-1 season, but the challenges the team faced and still able to win in double digits, showed how well the squad played. “It’s a testament to the players last year to finish as well as they did,” Denardo said. “It was the hardest schedule a DL team probably has played and with all the injuries we had, we didn’t have the same lineup all season.”
The Lakers open the season with a home tournament and will start against Achiever Academy, a prep school based out of Eagan, Thursday, starting at 7:15 p.m. DL will also face Grafton, N.D., Saturday at 3 p.m. The 2013-14 Detroit Lakes boys’ hockey schedule: November 21 Achiever Academy 23 Graphton, N.D. 26 Fergus Falls 30 Warroad December 3 at Northern Lakes 6 at Prairie Centre 10 at Park Rapids 13 at Bagley 20 at Wadena-Deer Creek 26-28 at Eveleth-Gil. DL Dance Team has a new home BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
The Detroit Lakes Dance Team will have another target to shoot for this season after being added to the Northern Lights Conference, after many years of trying to find a home. The Northern Lights Conference is made up of Mid-State teams (StaplesMotley, Wadena-Deer Creek, CrosbyIronton, Pequot Lakes and Park Rapids), along with several other northern schools. The conference championship will be decided by preliminary meets for each Jazz and Kick, with the final meet in each in January, with scores from all events added up to determine the victor. “We’re very excited for the additional level of competition and recognition being in a conference will bring,” said DL head coach Britton Ramsey. Another change in the Dance Team world will be the state meet process, which will act more of a playoff format to resemble other sports in the state. The Minnesota Association of Dance Teams passed a bracket format for the state meet, but yet has to be passed by the MSHSL. Potentially starting next season, the state meet will have the top six teams advancing from the sections to a headto-head matchup bracket. The match ups will be based on coaching seeding. With changes looming in the air for Dance Team competition, the Lakers will also be in the midst of some changes, as well. “We lost four seniors last year in addition to some turnover, so this year is a rebuilding year for us,” Ramsey said. “We have seven returning varsity members out of 22 on the kick team this year. We had bigger numbers coming out as a whole, a lot of interest from the younger girls to be involved. “We are rostering 22 for varsity and 20 for junior varsity, but largely inexperienced. Our focus is to create a positive atmosphere for the rookies so they can grow with our program.” The Lakers will have one senior and second-year captain Karissa Berg to lead this year’s team. Berg will bring the hard-work men-
tality to the younger dancers and will be helped by a solid group of juniors. “(Juniors) Kalley Waller and Megan Vogt are two of our best kickers on the team,” Ramsey said. “Other dancers back that we expect big things from are sophomores Sadie Boeckel, Tatum Doppler and freshman Maddie Ramsey. “We have junior Hanna Vogt and sophomore Ally Rousu back from taking a year off and they add a lot of talent to our team. We have a lot of ability within our rookies this year, which is really exciting to watch them push themselves.” The Lakers will be employing a “fun, positive atmosphere” and will go with a hip-hop themed for the high kick team. “It’s a crowd pleaser by design, rather than choreographing something based off points from a score sheet,” Ramsey added. “We want people to want to watch us, and be a part of what our team’s doing.” The Jazz team will employ a lyrical style love story theme. “The emotional element is key, in addition to hitting all the skills,” Ramsey said. “We really want to draw our audience in to the story we’re telling so the dancers have to try to connect emotionally to the song.” With the good team chemistry and dedicating which is being shown by the Lakers, hitting the details will be key to progress through the season. With the themes fitting each team well and the dancers hopefully connecting with the routines, the rebuilding process could be a quick procedure. “We need to work on awareness of our placement and the technical elements of our choreography,” Ramsey included. “Our girls are working on becoming stronger and better conditioned, but we still tend to lose kick height half way through so we need to keep that consistent. “Being that we only have one senior this year I would expect big things from this group in the next few years. The girls love the music, so they are having fun on the floor which really helps keep them stay pumped up. “For jazz our strength is the variety between the girls. I can have some girls
showcased doing extensions and another group doing turns at the same time.” Ramsey is hoping for a big crowd for the Lakers’ season and home opener Saturday, Dec. 7, so her teams can showcase what they have to offer. The meet starts at 12 p.m. with eight teams competing.

Lakers ready to surprise this year BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
With good experience back, some top-notch talent and solid team chemistry, the Detroit Lakes boys’ swimming and diving team will need one more aspect to tie it all together for the 2013-14 season. Versatility will be a facet Laker head coach Rian Heimark will be focusing his team on for the season, meaning more swimmers competing in more events. “We need to find some guys who will swim all events,” Heimark said. “We are not as well-rounded as we have been in the past.” It’s a trait which can certainly be addressed, as DL enters the season with solid leadership at the top with seven seniors. Michael Richter comes into the season in the “best shape of his life” and will be looked upon to be a leader. He will be one of the Lakers’ allaround swimmers by taking on the butterfly, breaststroke and the freestyle events. “Michael has done an excellent job training in the weight room and he is very motivated after just missing
out on state last year in the relays,” Heimark said. Seniors who did compete in the state meet in the relays were Austin McCullough and Isaac Clem, who each return as senior captains, as well. Clem will be returning to the team around midseason after nursing an injury, while McCullough will be one of DL’s leading sprinters. Junior captain Jared Olson also has a hunger after missing state in the 200 individual medley last season by .2 of a second. “No doubt, state is in his sites,” Heimark said of Olson. “He was able to go on one of the relays, though.” Sophomore Caleb Howard will also be a main point contributor. The Lakers will also be heavy senior laden, which includes diver Jacob Kempenich, Austin Nelson in the breast and freestyle; Diego Erickson and Austin Savig in the sprints. The Laker diving team will consist of four, including Kempenich, along with freshman Zane Freeman, eighth grader Austin Gedrose and sophomore Andrew Holzgrove. Sophomores who will see varsity time include Ethan McCullough and Jake Anderson, who has qualified for

sections the last two years. Other freshmen who also swam in the section meet include Spencer Heimark and Brady Labine, with eighth graders looking to make an impact include Quinn Bakken, Elliot Musielewicz and Connor Haugrud. With many of the section teams losing an abundance of seniors and the Lakers losing two, experience potentially might tilt to DL this year. “We’ll see what the boys can do this year and I will be pushing them to their limits and see what they are capable of doing,” Heimark said. “I have some high expectations for these guys.” The Lakers open the season Saturday in the Fergus Falls Invite and will have their home opener Friday, Dec. 13, against Thief River Falls.

Early snow gives Laker skiers a full season BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
For the first season in a while, the Detroit Lakes boys’ and girls’ Nordic skiing teams will have a good chance of finishing a full schedule, after several seasons of low amounts of snow. The Lakers will be looking to progress through the months of December through January to set up their Section 8-1A meet Feb. 4, at Camp Ripley. One Laker skier who will be looking to return to state after a year furlough is Berit Ramstad-Skoyles, who took a year off as a foreign exchange student to Chile, South America.
“Berit is excited to get back into it and jump right in,” said DL head coach Dan Josephson. “She has skied four times the last two years, so it may take a little time to get back to where she left off.” Ramstad-Skoyles has already qualified for the state meet three times and will use the regular season to get her skies back underneath her and try for No. 4 in sections. Senior Lyndsey Baker will also be back after skiing last year, while Madeline Lembke, Sydney and sophomores Bridget Bergen and Haley Groth will pick up seasoning as the year progresses.
“We will have a difficult time filling out a full varsity team early on, but will be able to as the season goes on,” Josephson said. The Laker boys will be top-heavy with three experienced and skilled skiers in seniors Zach Foltz and Anthony Myer, along with leading skier from last year in sophomore Austin Askelson. “Our top three will be neck-andneck and if we can get some good points from our No. 4 skier, that will move us around in team placings in meets,” Josephson said. The Lakers will open the season Dec. 14, in Bemidji and have their

DL matmen to boast a well-balanced lineup BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
After going through some growing pains last season, the Detroit Lakes wrestling team will be reaping some of those benefits of their younger wrestlers seeing action during the 2012-13 year. That, coupled with a strong offseason by many of their wrestlers, the Lakers look to be a well-balanced squad throughout their lineup, with a strong middle and a bookend heavyweight. “We hope to be in the hope again in the section,” said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. “If we can develop and improve during the regular season, we should be in the top four again.” The Lakers return two state wrestlers from last year, with state placer junior Parker Jackson back in the 152-60 weight range and sophomore heavyweight James Huwe capping DL’s matches. “James had a great offseason and earned All-American honors (in Greco-Roman) this past summer,” Ullyott said. “Parker also had a strong offseason wrestling, so both are ready to go.” But throughout the Laker lineup, DL will have solid seasoned wrestlers, who will be looking to limit bonus points taken on them, instead picking them up. Starting out at 106-113, each of eighth grader Braydon Ortlof and junior Tyler Bellefeuille have experience. At 113-20, eighth grader Payton Jackson returns with good mat experience, while freshman Cory Puttbrese will be in the mix, as well. The 120-26 weight divisions will be occupied by eighth grader Austin Baker and freshman Trey Greer, with both making varsity debuts, while freshman Marcus Jaskens has some mat seasoning in those weights. Freshman Sean Lundeen is a transfer from Jackson, where he wrestled some varsity at 120-26. In the 132-38 classes, juniors Luke Payne and Logan Twigg have several years of varsity action under their belts, with eighth grader Cameron Erb looking for time, as well. Sophomore Dylan Skoda will be a contributor at 138-45, while weights 145-52 is loaded with experience with juniors Nathan Francis, Bryant Swiers and Luke Eggebraaten solidifying those slots. “Luke is back from an injury which kept him out last year and we are expecting him to be a contributor,” Ullyott said. Varsity newcomer freshman Jordan Mackner will join Jackson at 152-60 weight divisions, while the 160-

Row 2: Tanner Schnathorst, Dylan Skoda, Manny Plaza, Logan Twigg, Jacob Hanson, Marcus Jasken, Jordan Mackner, Rayn Jacobson. Row 3: Kirby Siewert, Parker Jackson, Nathan Francis, Jarett Nosal, Luke Eggebraaten, Cole Hegg, James Huwe, Brandon Dahring. 70 classes will have lots of competition between senior Jarett Nosal (captain), sophomores Rayne Jacobson and Manuel Plaza. “Jarett has been wrestling varsity since his freshman season and he has tremendous athletic ability,” Ullyott said. “He’s ready to take the next step.” In weight classes 170-82, senior Cole Hegg is back after being a regular on the varsity mat the last couple of seasons, with junior Tanner Schnathorst and eighth grader Jacob Hanson looking to gain some experience. The Lakers are well seasoned from 182 through 195 with senior Alex Weber, Mike Renteria and Kirby Siewert making the team a formidable one right in front of Huwe. “Alex had an injury last season and Kirby also missed the entire season with an injury,” Ullyott said. “Kirby should be a tough 220, because he has good size and strength.” The Lakers will miss a couple of important cogs from last year, with Jeff Gailfus moving out of town, while senior Brandon Dahring out for the year with an ACL injury. “Those are two big holes to fill,” Ullyott said. “Brandon will still provide his leadership by being a student/ coach for us this year, though.” The Lakers have only two home matches this season, due to some cancellations and not hosting a DL tournament. They will be at home Dec. 17 for a dual with Mahnomen/Waubun, while hosting a triangular with Fergus Falls License #BC002500

Raiders to climb the ladder in 2013-14 Bryant takes over coaching duties BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
After coming off a 4-22 season and transitioning with a new head coach, the Lake Park-Audubon boys’ basketball team will be looking to progress through the 2013-14 winter season. New head coach Anthony Bryant is very familiar with the Raider basketball program, though, after coaching the LP-A girls’ basketball team the last several years, and his goal is to improve on the boys’ team this season. “With a strong crew of returning players, the boys hope to be competitive in the conference and section,” Bryant said. The Raiders do return seniors Jordan Stockert, Dalton Kohler, Izzy Pearson and Steve Wavra. “Jordan is a strong presence in the post,” Bryant said. “Dalton has a soft outside touch and Izzy runs the show at the point. “Steve does a great job running the 1-3 positions and Tim Brekken is a returning junior with varsity experience at the guard position.”

Pearson has good seasoning at the point guard position and will be looked upon to dish out the assists, while Brekken is a “standout defensive player” and Wavra adds a 15-foot jump shot. In the frontcourt, the Raiders will be led by the 6-foot-5 Kohler, who can also hit shots from the perimeter. Freshman Mitch Hall will also give the Raiders another outside shooter. “Our guards all have the ability to knock down the outside shot,” Bryant said. “Jordan and Dalton are tremendous rebounders who will look to keep the other team off the glass.” The Raiders will also have solid depth coming off the bench in sophomore Lane Ulmer, juniors Tory Haglund, Justin Hanson, Roman Frederick and Sam Whitehead. Offensively, the Raiders will be stronger with a half-court scheme, with Kohler and Stockert in the post and the athleticism of Pearson, Brekken and Wavra giving them the ability to run the floor.

LP-A to bring in experience
Chemistry will be strong for Mystix
There will not be any wide eyes due to playing on the varsity level for the Lake Park-Audubon girls’ basketball team, after they return four of their top five scorers from a year ago. The Raiders also boast six seniors on the roster with good experience, with five being starters in forwards Bailee Bartunek, Breann Hogie, guards Lindsey Olson, Jennifer Hamre and Sarah Swenson. “We go about seven or eight deep, so we do have good depth, as well,” said first-year head coach Brad Dunham. “We will be concentrating on defense, because it’s such a strong unit, along with rebounding. “We hope our defense can create some offense.” Rebounding will be a strength with the return of Bailee Bartunek, who was one of the state’s leading rebounders in 2012-13. Bartunek will play a high-low position on offense, with the guards feeding her the ball on the post, but also having the ability to dribble outside and drain the 15-footer. “We won’t have to just rely on Bailee for offense, though, because we will be able to utilize everyone,” Dunham said. The backcourt will be strong with Hamre, Swenson and Olson, all who can shoot the perimeter shot well, thus keeping defenses honest and spread out. Up to 3400 Gallon Capacity
3 Trucks To Serve You
Junior Megan Hilfer will also be a backcourt contributor, as will junior Jess Swegarden, who will return after the holiday break due to an injury. Freshman post Madelynn Thompson will be Bartunek’s replacement when the senior needs a breather. Senior Breann Hogie will also be counted on in the frontcourt, while other contributors will include sophomore Carli Raaen, junior Kayla Olson, senior Hailey Morrow and junior Laina Nelson. With the good experience back, Dunham wants the girls to focus on the one game at a time approach. “We just need to make sure we do the small things right,” Dunham said. “We are a veteran team, but they are a very coachable group.”

A close-knit group has formed strong chemistry, which will be a strength for the Lake Park-Audubon/ Hawley Mystix Dance Team for the 2013-14 season. The Mystix team is starting afresh with new uniforms, new dance themes and a new attitude to go along with it. “There are a lot of new changes for the positive,” said first-year head coach Jenna Normandin.

The LP-A/Hawley squads of Jazz and High Kick will be focusing on the technical aspects of their routines, which will be headed by three seniors in Kari Olson, Paige Giere and Shelby Doyle. Juniors include Bobbi Jo Babler and Emily Siiro. There is also a strong contingent of eighth graders through sophomores, as well. All the dancers will also be performing on both teams. “I think that’s an advantage for the girls, everyone is helping each other and every day they are working hard,” Normandin said. “They are like sisters and the chemistry is strong on the team.” For each meet, the Mystix set three goals to reach. If the goals are met, it’s deemed a successful meet, Normandin said. The state meet is also a long-term goal and with the work the team has shown, it is obtainable. “They have improved so much already, so there’s always a chance we can make it to state,” Normandin added. “We’ll see how bad they want it.”

The middle of the lineup for the United Clay Becker wrestling team will be its strength for the 2013-14 season. Leading the way will be senior Mason Swegarden, who will be wrestling at 160 pounds for team duals, while 152 individually. “He has intentions of making it to 145 for sections,” said UCB head coach Nick Paur. “Our goals are to win a few duals and send a few weights to state.” Sophomore captain Jonah Lange will be wrestling at 170-182 after working hard to become a stronger grappler. Junior Nick Wamre will join Swegarden at 145-160. “Nick will work in wherever he is needed,” Paur said. “He will wrestle mostly opposite of where Mason does.” Freshman Riley Byklum will be at 106-113, while sophomore Jerrett will add talent to the 126-138 classes. “We do not have a lot of depth, with guys moving around each other to help out at the different weight classes,” Paur included.
