Perfect timing For

40 years, Sandi and Terry Kemmer knew what they wanted their first-built house to look like. It wasn’t until 2005 though that they finally built that dream house. In the early 1970s, The Forum of Fargo-Moorhead newspaper would publish house plans, and then people could send in $1 and a self-addressed stamped envelope and have the plans sent to

them. The Kemmers found a design they loved and sent away for it. They held onto those plans in a three-ring binder with various other house plans and ideas they liked that they had found over the years. “As it was built, we kept downsizing and downsizing,” Terry said with a laugh. “We love it – totally,” Sandi added.

So they had the house plans they loved, but the next step was finding a place they would want to live after retirement. When they were first married, the Kemmers were both teaching in Ulen-Hitterdal. They would come to Detroit Lakes a lot to enjoy their weekends and summer. So after 40 years of moving around, they ended in Mayville,

N.D., before retirement and decided Detroit Lakes was the spot they wanted to retire to and build the home they had held onto for 40 years. After being completed by Christmas of 2005, the couple used the house as a weekend retreat for several years before moving there permanently two years ago. Entering the front door, the house

looks like any other typical home with a formal living room and entryway to the den/spare bedroom and master bedroom and bathroom. From there though, be prepared to be wowed. The great room and kitchen are open to vaulted ceilings, with an upstairs loft. The built-in fireplace and shelves in the great room also house a hidden television for a more formal set-

ting when desired. The kitchen, complete with custom-built cabinets that have a few perks of their own, includes a narrow spice cabinet on one side with a wine fridge on the other. Sandi’s favorite part of the kitchen isn’t even in the kitchen. Next door is the walk-in pantry — a pantry that seems endless.

“We just really like it,” she said. And for good reason. With floor to ceiling shelves on one side and space to stack larger items on the other side, just about anything for the kitchen can be found in the pantry. The main level also includes a guest bedroom and a bathroom. The master suite includes doors off the bedroom to the deck and an allglass block walk-in shower. And speaking of that deck, Sandi said they use it year round. Their Timber Creek addition house abuts the woods, and their deck is perfect for enjoying the serene lot. She said that they eat most meals on the deck, and she even has pictures of the grandkids bundled up in coats and blankets in March around the table on the deck. The south side of their home, the side with the deck, is filled with large windows to soak in the sun. The grandkids — six of them under the age of 10 — not only get fun adven-

There are two guest bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs as well. One of the bedrooms has a special cubbyhole in the wall where the younger grandkids can be found playing - and hiding. off the loft. Even though they held onto their plans for 40 years, while they were building, their contractor suggested changes here and there to enhance the house, which they loved. For instance, the master bedroom was supposed to be open with the 18foot ceilings as well, until the contractor suggested putting in the loft instead of wasting the space with an open ceiling. The Kemmers went with his idea and are happier with the play area for the grandchildren. While the Kemmers love the home

they have after waiting 40 years, they said they aren’t opposed to selling it eventually and building a new one either, somewhere closer to their children and grandchildren. And when that day comes, there are pieces of this house plan they will take with them including the pantry, surround sound, deck to the south and a walk-in shower. And yes, they still have their threering binder and a perfect plan saved for the next house. Follow Pippi Mayfield on Twitter at @PippiMayfield.

Perfect patio

High ceilings give an open and grand feeling to the Johnson home located on North Shore Drive Story by Pippi Mayfield Photos by Brian Basham

Stepping into Jeff and Ardis John-

son’s North Shore Drive home, it’s hard not to notice the high ceilings, giving the house an open and spacious look to it. The 12-16 foot ceilings (various heights in various rooms) throughout the house give way to large fans throughout and a beautiful chandelier in the formal dining room. Elegant and ready for special dinners, the dining room will impress most any guest. The home, built in 2009, was modeled after “a plan we saw in Florida with an open floor plan,” Jeff said. They brought the plan home, tweaked it to their liking and built their striking brick home on North Shore Drive. To showcase Detroit Lake, the south side of the Johnson’s home is filled with windows, overlooking the lake and the ducks that tend to gravitate to their boatlift. As guests enter the home, a comfortable living room with fireplace welcomes them. Off to one side is an open kitchen, and to the other is the master suite.

Vast in size, the bathroom boasts a walk-in shower, large whirlpool tub and his and hers sinks. Guests will have to see the bathroom to appreciate the remarkable size of it. On the other side of those grand windows, the Johnsons have a patio fit for entertaining. A couple different tiers allows for various seating areas, flower beds and the center piece, an outdoor fireplace. The Johnsons said they like to light the fireplace when family and guests come, and their grandchildren especially like making s’mores around the fire. And outside, there’s even a taste of Florida with a light-up palm tree on the patio. Above a second detached garage, there is an “extra sleeping space,” Jeff said, though it isn’t completed yet and won’t be included on the home tour. The Merseth home shows off great windows in a great room Story by Pippi Mayfield Photos by Brian Basham

A GREAT HOME

20

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 14’

Great room Great fireplace. Great win-

dows. When Joe and Karen Merseth built their home in 2006, they designed it to be easily accessible on the first floor and the perfect second floor for when their family comes home to visit. Though hidden initially when coming in the front door, the gem of the house lies in the living room. Though cozy for visiting, the room boasts a stately stone fireplace and grand windows. But it’s the nearby den where the Merseths spend most of their time. “We spend a great amount of time (in the den). We designed the home for us,” Joe said. After living in several different homes over the years, Joe and Karen said they knew what they did and didn’t want in a new home. n FACING PAGE The great room is cozy with a fireplace and large windows to enjoy the outdoors indoors.

“We had a basic floor plan and tore it apart,” Joe said. “We’ve built four homes, so we’ve had some experience.” They hired Don Tietz to build their home and are pleased with the result. They built in the Timber Creek development off South Shore Drive because “we always liked this neighborhood,” Karen said, adding that there are lots of young families in the development. They built the first floor of the house to be handicapped accessible — “if it’s for us or whomever,” Joe said. The master suite has plenty of space, including a small outside patio. The bathroom boasts a whirlpool tub, walk-in shower and

his and her sinks with ample counter space. The kitchen and dining room are open with an island, and the main level also includes the master bedroom and bathroom. The laundry room and guest bathroom are also on the main level. Upstairs, the loft is open to the living room, showing off more of the windows. Joe has an office upstairs, along with two guest bedrooms and a bonus room above the garage, constructed with the grandkids in mind. A great place for the Merseths to gather is the Family Room Over the Garage (referred to as the “FROG” room in the Merseth home). It is an open room with a television for movie time, couches for relaxing and toys for when the grandkids were younger. Because of roof lines, the only window in the large room was a small one facing the street. Though cute, it did little for brightening the room. So Joe proposed the contractors put in a skylight. He said that Tietz told him that if you’re going to do skylights, do them right. Instead of one, there are three skylights, allowing natural light to pour into the room. Unless it’s completely dark outside, there’s no need to switch

Lodge at the lake

After

six houses and six children, Lisa Jasken Peterson knows her way around a house. And she knows how to design a house that’s accessible, good for large groups and still has a clean, fresh look to it. Walking through the front door of her and her husband Ben’s Muskrat Lake home, the first thing any guest notices is the cabin.

28

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 14’

The Jasken Peterson house highlights a unique lodge inside their spacious living quarters Story by Pippi Mayfield Photos by Brian Basham

The Muskrat Lake Lodge is an enclosed four-seasons sunroom made to look like an old cabin the rest of the house was built around. “This was a big deal,” she said of the sunroom. Whenever the Petersons are entertaining, Lisa said that the kids and wives are usually in the kitchen and the men are in the Muskrat Lake Lodge.

The kitchen: Another must in a house that Lisa designs is a large kitchen. “We absolutely love it, my whole family,” she said. Since they entertain a lot — kids and adults — “this is the place everyone usually goes.” Knowing that, the open space, large kitchen and having everything on one level are the major things Lisa takes into con-

sideration when designing a new house. She also picks and chooses where to spend the money when building a house. She said she never puts extra money into granite countertops, for example, because she sees it better spent on a bigger kitchen or somewhere else in the home. She said when she designs a house, it’s both for her family’s needs and for resale. Working as a realtor, she knows what will sell and what people are looking for. Though they

haven’t been in this house a year yet, Lisa said she plans to keep it for quite a while. “When I design a house, I live in it (the plans) for two weeks to make changes and get it figured out. Then away we go,” she said. “My brother and I have built houses together for a while.” The Peterson’s 4,000-squarefoot home has an open floor plan with most of the space on the main floor. “Everything has to be super open,” she said. “There are lots of different entertaining spaces.” Off one end of the main living space is the master bedroom and bathroom. Usually a house is built so that you enter the master bedroom and then the bathroom from there. Lisa switched that up for this house though. She said she has the bathroom first because with a large family, the master bathroom is utilized as well and this way the bedroom can stay private. “We obviously like the lake view but also the privacy,” she said was another reason for the switch. A patio off the bedroom overlooks the lake. Over the master bedroom area is a loft that houses an open living space with a television and craft table and the teenager bedrooms. There is an outdoor balcony from the loft, which Lisa said they can watch the sun set from the patio downstairs, then run upstairs and see 15 more minutes of sunset. On the other side of the house is the younger kids’ wing. Not interested in a basement, Lisa said she likes the separated area — which includes a pocket door to close off the area if desired — for the kids. This wing includes a bathroom, two bedrooms and a small living room. She said the bedrooms aren’t overly big because she doesn’t want the kids and friends holed up in their rooms anyway. them. Lisa said a large laundry room is also important to her because with a large family, so much time is spent doing laundry. Above the garage is a “bonus room,” though it’s an apartment Lisa’s daughter and her husband inhabit. She said that since her children are spread out in age, she wanted to be able to not only help out her daughter and new son-inlaw but also give her children a chance to have a close relationship with each other. Outside, the special touches keep coming. Since they sold their playground with the last house, Lisa had a slide attached to their patio area that ends in the yard. They also have a fire pit and outdoor seating on their patio. Though she has maybe moved through several houses in the past, this one is different, she said. “The trees on this lot were just waiting for this house to be here.” And she has no intention of leaving them for quite a while. A work of art

Upon

entering Jerry and Mary Schutz’s home, anyone can see it’s a light and open home but not nearly as sizable as many houses on the Damien Home Tours. But this one has something more unique to offer. “We think the reason people will like this is the art,” Mary said. Seven years ago, the Schutzes purchased their home as an investment property. They rented it out for sev-

eral years, and then last year sold their home on Pickerel Lake and moved into Detroit Lakes after they had the rental remodeled. The floors are lined with hickory and porcelain tile. “It’s practically brand new,” Mary said of their house after the remodel. The house has an open floor plan with a fireplace in the living room and a patio out back to enjoy morning coffee.

As beautiful and simple as the home is though, visitors’ eyes are easily drawn to the artwork. “We decorated to highlight the art,” Mary said. Jerry is an architect, and Mary is an interior designer so there is plenty of taste for art. Both also create their own art, though Jerry practices his skills more often, Mary admits. Both say there is no rhyme or reason behind what art they have bought

And the pieces weren’t researched or thought of as an investment either. “We bought them because we like them,” Jerry said. Not only are the walls lined with pieces of artwork, the couple has created new pieces of art with existing pieces. For instance, Jerry took a large piece of mosaic work that was in-

tended to hang on the wall and instead turned it into a coffee table for the living room. They started collecting art in the mid-1970s and have been finding pieces ever since. When they first started out though, they couldn’t afford much — even of the more affordable pieces. Their first piece of original art they purchased was a painting by Lula Brown, priced at $150. Jerry told Brown that he loved it but could only afford to pay her $50 a month for three months. He said if she held it and would accept the payments, he would come pick it up in three months. She said no, take it now and send her the payments. Some pieces over the years they have paid a little more for, but some pieces have been quite a bargain. The second

picture they ever purchased was a farm scene by Helmeke. They bought it in 1975 for $27. Later, they were offered $1,000 from a collector, sight unseen, for the painting. There is a story behind every piece of art in the Schutz home, and Mary and Jerry are happy to share each one. For the home tour, the Schutzes have put together a handout with each piece of art listed, who the artist is and a short sentence about where they acquired it. Over the years they have collected a lot of artwork from Montana artists, where they once lived, and from Fargo artists. When they travel, they make sure to tour museums, and trips to Europe presented the best viewing because of the impressionist art, a fa-

es. After selling his architecture business in 1997 and moving to Detroit Lakes, Jerry took up painting. More than a dozen of his pieces grace the walls. He also turns wooden bowls, urns and plates, which are also on display throughout the house. Mary has several of her pieces on display as well, along with a carved head she created. When the Schutzes moved from their Pickerel Lake home into town, they also downsized the art collection by about 50 pieces, giving their kids first pick and then giving the rest away. Since moving to a smaller space and being retired with a smaller income, they tend to not buy as much art as they used to. “Which is hard for us,” Jerry said with a laugh.
