“Looking back, it really means a lot more to me winning the Pine to Palm...” — Jon Trasamar

I

t was quite the golf year for University of Minnesota graduate Jon Trasamar, who started his senior Gopher season by dominating the 81st Pine to Palm Golf Tournament field and capping it with a Big 10 Conference championship. Those two bookend accomplishments framed a senior season in which Trasamar couldn’t have asked to go any better. It started last August when the Gopher became only the third Pine to Palm competitor since 1985 to claim both the medalist honors and championship, when he defeated Detroit Lakes native Robert Wagner 2 and 1 in the title match. Then came the college fall and spring seasons, where eventually the Gophers claimed the Big 10 championship, something which the team was building for all

year. “Last year, we took second in the Big 10 tournament, so we knew we had to get it done this time around,” said Trasamar, who was the lone Gopher captain. “It was a good year and bookending that with a conference championship, that was the highlight of my career.” Trasamar had a jumpstart to his college fall season by winning medalist and championship honors at the 81st Pine to Palm. He shot a two-day low of 6667 for a nine-under par 133. He then proceeded to tear through match play and the eventual coveted Pine to Palm championship, joining only Andy Doeden (2001), Mike Podolak (1993) and Jim Sorenson (1985) to win both medalist and the title since 1985. “I was just focused all week and I came out ready to go,”

Trasamar said of his run in last year’s tournament. “I was focused on every round. Looking back, it really means a lot more to me winning the Pine to Palm, and it’s pretty cool to have my name up on the board.” But for the second year in a row, the defending champion will not be returning for a repeat run. Last year, 2012 champion Beau Hanson qualified for the U.S. Amateur Tournament, which landed on the same week as the Pine to Palm. This time, Trasamar will not be back to defend his title after turning pro, as he is currently playing on the Dakota Tour. It didn’t take long for Trasamar to make a name for himself on the Dakota Tour after he won the $15,000 purse in Sioux Falls, S.D., very early in the season. Trasamar used the momen-

Jon Trasamar turned pro this past summer and has already won a $15,000 purse on the Dakota Tour. He will not be back to defend his 2013 Pine to Palm championship. tum he gained during the Gopher season, where he peaked at the end of the season to help his team to the conference championship. “We didn’t expect Jon to make a wave like he did later in the season,” said U of M head coach John Carlson. “He served as the team’s leader, not only as the captain, but he led on and off the golf course and in the classroom.” The Gophers started picking up momentum with a win in the Seton Hall tournament, which was followed up soon after with a victory at Long Beach State. Another tournament victory was had in Penn State, which started a winning attitude on the team. “We started learning how to win,” Trasamar said of the winning streak. During the Big Ten Championships, which were held Dye Course at French Lick Resort, Trasamar sunk a dramatic 45-yard birdie on the 18th hole, which was dubbed as “…one of the finest moments of the year in Gopher Golf…” by Carlson. U of M Jose Mendez was Big 10 co-medalist, while Carlson was eventually named the Conference Head Coach of the Year. Trasamar finished third overall in the Big 10 Tournament with a six-over par mark.

6

The Gophers won a total of four tournaments this past year, including their first conference title since 2007. They finished ninth in the NCAA Raleigh Regional with a 20over par score. Several of the Gophers off that Big 10 championship team also play in the Pine to Palm, including Alex Gaugert, Jon DuToit and Trasamar. “That’s one thing I am going to miss the Pine to Palm, because it was a good week to hang out with the team,” Trasamar included. The Gopher senior finished with the second-best stroke average with a 73.92 in 12 tournaments and recorded three top 10 and six top 20 finishes. The transition from high school to playing college didn’t go as smoothly as his college to pro jump, but he learned from it nonetheless. “I was a bit overwhelmed going from high school to college golf, because I felt the need to get better quickly,” Trasamar said. “Instead, I should have just been looking to improve a little each day. Going pro, I just continued to improve and I am looking over it in the long haul.” By playing the pro circuit, Trasamar has no one but himself to help prepare for the grind of the Dakota Tour. “You’re responsible for yourself

| THE PINE TO PALM GOLF TOURAMENT — AUGUST 11-17, 2014

when you’re on tour,” Trasamar said. “You’re on your own now.” But Carlson believes Trasamar has garnered all the necessary tools to succeed as a pro, as his first win this early in his career proves. “He is a very responsible and mature individual,” Carlson said. “There are not many 23-year-olds who are as mature as he is. I’ve always seen that leader in him and he is a very humble player, but confident, as well.” Trasamar will also start Qualifying School for the PGA Tour in October in Nebraska as he keeps his progression on the pro ranks moving right along. The Gophers will have another strong contingent in this year’s Pine to Palm again, with Fargo’s Riley Johnson and Grady Meyer, senior Tyler Lowenstein, Matt Rachey, Charlie Duensing and Daniel Luftspring all competing. “I always encourage my players to play in the Pine to Palm, because it’s a great time for them to get to know each other and it allows the freshmen to spend time with the returning players,” Carlson said. “It’s a good time for them to relax, enjoy the week and work hard on their games before the fall season starts.”

“The Championship Flight always has big numbers and we will be seeing a lot of new players...” — Jim Bruflodt, P to P chairman

Pine to Palm field to be as strong as ever STORY BY BRIAN WIERIMA • PHOTO BY BRIAN BASHAM

I

t will be a typical strong field of play during the 82nd Pine to Palm Golf Tournament, which will start Monday, Aug. 11, at the Detroit Country Club. Although there will be plenty of new players vying for one of the many divisional championships, the numbers will be strong as usual. “The Championship Flight always has big numbers and we will be seeing a lot of new players, since a lot of those young guys are turning pro and won’t be back,” said Pine to Palm chairman Jim Bruflodt. One of those who will not be returning is defending champion Jon Trasamar, who won each the medalist honors and championship in 2013. Trasamar turned pro this summer and is playing on the Dakota Tour, where he’s al-

ready won one event. “Winning that early shows me I belong (on the pro circuit),” Trasamar said. “It definitely was a confidence booster.” So for the second year in a row, the defending champion will not be playing, after 2012 champion Beau Hanson pulled out after he qualified for the U.S. Amateur. But that doesn’t mean the talent is any lesser for the 2014 field. There once again will be a big contingent of college players, including from the University of Minnesota, where Trasamar played out of as a senior. He will have up to six former Gopher teammates playing in Championship Flight play, while many others from across the country will also be playing the DCC links.

But the week is not just about Championship play, but also will have super competitive divisions in the Mid-Am, Seniors and Super-Seniors, as well as name flights and 16 numbered flights. “The Mid-Am, Seniors and Super-Seniors have gone very well and have been very popular,” Bruflodt said. The three defending champions in the Mid-Am (Perry Piatz), Seniors (Tim Rubis) and Super-Seniors (Chuck Renner) will all return. For Renner, he will forego his automatic No. 1 seed and play in the qualifying round. Renner is the three-time Super-Seniors champion and has won three medalist laurels, as well, out of the four years the division has been in existence. Bruflodt also is pleased that the 1981 Pine to Palm

The 2013 Pine to Palm finalists Jon Trasamar (left) and Robert Wagner shake hands after their title match. Trasamar won 2 and 1. 10

Jim Bruflodt will run his second Pine to Palm Golf Tournament, starting Aug. 11. champion Mark Norman will compete in Senior’s play. The Pine to Palm chairman also noted the website and online presence will be better and timely, with tee times and opponents posted. Bruflodt also credited the many volunteers throughout the week who work the long hours to make the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament the best amateur golfing tourney in the region. “It’s just a great atmosphere all week and that’s because of all the volunteers who make it happen,” Bruflodt added. The Pine to Palm qualifying rounds for all divisions will be Monday through Wednesday, with match play beginning Thursday and running through Sunday with all championships being held.

The weather turned out to be nice for the majority of the week during last year’s Pine to Palm Golf Tournament, as this golfer tees off on one of the back nine holes.

“I was hitting the ball so well.” — Jon Trasamar, 2013 Pine to Palm champion

Trasamar sweeps Pine to Palm honors U of M golfer is medalist and champ STORY BY BRIAN WIERIMA • PHOTOS BY BRIAN BASHAM

I

t was a rare sweep for the University of Minnesota’s senior Jon Trasamar, as he joined some elite company after winning each the 81st Pine to Palm Golf Tournament’s medalist honors and the championship, something which was only done three times since 1985. The Gopher golfer topped Detroit Lakes’ native Robert Wagner in the finals 2 and 1, to seal the deal Sunday on his Pine to Palm sweep. The only other golfers to pull off the medalist-championship sweep, includes Andy Doeden (2001), Mike Podolak (1993) and Jim Sorenson (1985). Trasamar put on one of the most consistent dominating performances in recent Pine to Palm history, by steamrolling over his match play competition after earning medalist laurels by shooting a nine-under par 133.

The Gopher senior captain felt a run like he put on this past week at the Detroit Country was coming on. “My golf game has been getting better and better all year and instead of playing a bunch, I instead was focusing on being a smarter golfer and working on my course management,” Trasamar said. “It was trending to this tournament, and this past week, I was hitting the ball so well.” Trasamar didn’t have many close matches, while downing two-time Pine to Palm champion Rick Kuhn 4 and 3 in the Sunday morning semifinal round. But Trasamar’s toughest outing came in the finals, where he met Detroit Lakes’ 1998 graduate and St. Louis Park’s Wagner, who put on an exciting run through match play. Wagner had a third-best qualifying score of sevenunder par 135, while winning

close matches all the way through and highlighted by his 5 and 4 win over one of the Pine to Palm’s most prolific golfer Greg Melhus, who was making his fifth appearance in the tournament’s final four. “I’ve been playing my best golf of my life this week,” Wagner said. “I play a pretty hard course in the Cities (Minneapolis Golf Club) and never score under par. I was 26-under par total this week.” Wagner made his statement early that he belonged in the Pine to Palm finals, after he chipped in a 45-foot eagle on the first green. It was a hole Trasamar was accustomed to winning, since he made birdie every time he played it in his eight tries, but once. “After I saw him sink his eagle, things changed and I knew birdie wasn’t good enough,” Trasamar said. That didn’t occur, as

Pine to Palm finalists Robert Wagner and Jon Trasamar share a laugh during their title match in last year’s Pine to Palm Golf Tournament. 16

Wagner had an early 1-up lead. “I had about a 45-foot putt and there was a piece of dirt on my ball, which of course I couldn’t remove, so I just tried to put it next to the cup,” Wagner said. “I hit it perfectly and it rolled in. To hear the roar from the gallery was just sweet.” After being out-driven off the second tee, Trasamar forced to half the hole, then made his own statement on the third green. On his birdie putt, Trasamar sunk his 20-footer to bring the match back to even. The duo also halved No. 5, a hole Trasamar birdied every time he played it. Wagner went back 1-up by winning six with his own 18-20 foot putt before Trasamar nailed a 15-foot birdie on the Par 3 eighth hole. That started a string of crucial wins by Trasamar, as both golfers threw darts on the ninth green, but Wagner two-putted and the Gopher made birdie for a 1-up advantage. “I had a great wedge shot up to the green, probably one of the best I had all week,” Trasamar said of his approach shot. “That one was big for me.” Another 20-foot birdie putt on the 10th green reinforced Trasamar’s momentum, as he went 2-up, a lead he would not relinquish the rest of the way through. By hole 10, Trasamar had dropped seven birdies, but Wagner was still in the match down only two. “I was concerned about giving too many holes on the front nine, because I usually don’t play well on those,” Wagner said. “But I was only down one entering the back nine and I felt pretty confident in that.” With Trasamar’s long putts to build his 2-up advantage, he credited his green play on extra practice beforehand. “I was putting well, because I had more time on the putting green,” Trasamar said. “I was focusing more on my up and down putting and my speed on my putting was also a concern.” Wagner took hole 11 after Trasamar two-putted, but he regained the 2-up margin by winning 12 with another nice chip shot near the hole.

University of Minnesota’s Jon Trasamar chips up onto a green during last year’s Pine to Palm title match. The DL native missed a big opportunity on 13, after nearly missing his birdie putt, but instead halved it, with holes running out. It was much of the same on holes 14 and 15, as both missed their birdie putts. The same went for 16, with Trasamar getting up and down on 17 after going into the right-side bunker on his tee from the par three tee box. “I was in one or two bunkers all week, but on 17, I really like those downhill bunkers and I also had a lot of green to work with,” Trasamar said. His sand shot was money, as he laid it within five feet, as Wagner missed his long birdie off the fringe, to give the 81st Pine to Palm championship to Trasamar. “Playing eight rounds in six

days is pretty exhausting, it’s the most I’ve played in that amount of time,” Trasamar said. “It’s nice to join some of my teammates and former Gophers up on the Pine to Palm board as medalist and now champion.” Trasamar likely also played in his last Pine to Palm for quite some time. He is planning on going pro after the Gopher men’s golf season this spring, so he will not be back to defend his title. “It’s something I’ve focused on for a long time and I will pursue it sometime next summer,” Trasamar included. But for Wagner, he certainly will be back for his hometown tournament. “It was great playing my best golf this week,” Wagner said.

“That putt on 11 was key...” — Perry Piatz, 2013 Mid-Am champion

P

erry Piatz found out that steady and consistency can win one championships. Piatz’ par-like golf game earned him the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament’s Mid-Am division, after his 5 and 3 victory over Fargo’s Jay Olafson, who has won two titles in the past four years. “I just wanted to hit fairways and greens and went for pars,” Piatz said. “That’s my

goal when playing, making pars. If I carded 18 pars in a round, I think I would win a lot of matches.” But Piatz still pulled off the birdie, in which he had three of them on the back nine against Olafson to key his victory. The first came on hole 11, which was a 35-foot bending putt to put Piatz 2-up, while a birdie on hole 12 put him 3-up.

“That putt on 11 was key, generally I don’t putt well out here,” Piatz said. The longtime Pine to Palm golfer is thrilled to have won some tournament silver and his new status as champion. “It feels fantastic,” Piatz said. “It’s always nice to get your name up on the board (at the Detroit Country Club). I never thought I would get my name up there.”

Perry Piatz was steady and consistency en route to his Pine to Palm Mid-Am title.

“I had some good, close matches which came down to the last holes.” — Tim Rubis

Rubis claims Seniors title STORY BY BRIAN WIERIMA • PHOTO BY BRIAN BASHAM

I

t wasn’t the best timing for Fargo’s Tim Rubis, after he was told by his doctor last Monday that he needed hip-replacement surgery. The news came on the same week Rubis was going to play in the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament’s Senior division, but he was battling the pain which came with a degenerating hip. Instead of opting out of the tournament, Rubis had a cortisone shot to help deal with the pain. Good call. Rubis earned his second Pine to Palm Senior’s championship Sunday at the Detroit Country Club with his 1-up victory over Craig Stein. His other championship came in 2011. “Without that cortisone shot, there was no way I was going to be able to play,” Rubis said. “It was big.” Rubis played a total of five rounds over the course of the week, including his qualifying round of two-over par 73. His opening round victory of 5 and 4 over Jim Brothers was followed by three straight 1-up wins, including his quarterfinal triumph over defending champion Scott Linnerooth. “I had some good, close matches which came down to the last holes,” Rubis said. “And Craig (Stein) is a very good golfer, as well.” There were not a lot of birdies in the Senior’s championship match, as Rubis played even par golf with two birdies and two bogeys. Rubis built a 3-up lead after Stein fell into trouble on

Rubis was also grateful for his caddy, his son Matt. “Matt used to caddy for

me when he was younger, so it was an inspiration having him caddy for me (Sunday),” Rubis added. Eden Prairie’s Rob Harris won medalist laurels with a four-under par 67, but lost to Stein in the semifinals 5 and 4.

Renner strikes for No. 3

Super Seniors once again claimed by Arizona golfer STORY BY BRIAN WIERIMA • PHOTO BY BRIAN BASHAM

W

hen Chuck Renner decided to start playing the Pine to Palm Golf Tournament in the Super Senior’s division, he set his goals pretty high. After Sunday’s championship victory, Renner now has set the bar to a new level for future Super Senior competitors. Renner claimed his thirdstraight Super Senior’s title with a 5 and 4 win over Chuck Sjostrom. He now has won three of four Super Senior’s championship, while medaling three out of the four, as well. But Renner’s inspiration during his Pine to Palm play was three-time champion Jack Rule, who won title in 1958-60. “Jack Rule was from Iowa, like I am, so I thought it would be nice to win three like he did,” Renner said. The past two tournaments, Renner also bypassed his automatic exemption for match play, instead tried to medal during qualifying. Last year, he took medalist honors, but this year was second to medalist Clint Nelson, who shot two-under par 69, to Renner’s even par 71. “There was just one disappointment this time, but Clint played very well,” Renner said. Renner had four birdies on the front nine, but Sjostrom won holes seven and nine for a 1-up advantage. Renner’s key run came with wins on holes 11 through 13, which included birdie putts of 15 to 25 feet on the last

Nelson lost to Sjostrom in the semifinals 1-up, while Renner topped former Senior’s champion Joe Sauer in the final four 1-up in 20 holes.
