SCRIPTURAL POSITION The Word of God is the only inspired revelation from the Lord to man. Jesus Christ is the only Son of God, born of a virgin, lived a sinless life, died an atoning death for the sins of all men, ascended to heaven, and will come again for His own. Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life. Salvation is in faith in Christ alone, not the church and/or it’s ordinances. There is a coming return of Christ and judgment of the world. “Neither is there salvation in any other; for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:12
WORSHIP Our worship services follow the direction given in I Timothy 4 to be diligent to the

reading of God’s Word, exhortation in God’s Word and teaching of the doctrines of God’s Word.
SUNDAY SCHOOL Berean keeps a year round schedule of Bible classes for all ages from adults to preschool and also a staffed nursery. Each class is geared toward learning more of Christ and His Word.
SUNDAY EVENING Berean has a Sunday evening service year round. The last Sunday evening of the month is “fellowship” night with a “kettle blessing” following the evening service. You are encouraged to come!
TRUTH TRACKERS Every Wednesday evening at 7:00 pm is a time for children ages 5 to 12 to learn more of the Lord and His Word including crafts, music and games.

WATCH WHAT YOU SAY
A
wise man had a rule about speaking, which was to always ask before saying something if it was true, if it was kind, and if it was necessary. He was a man of few words, but very highly thought of by family and friends. Most of our daily conversation would fail his test, especially on the grounds of kindness and necessity. The test of necessity is perhaps the hardest to pass: will the words I am about to utter be helpful or edifying. Think about how much of our conversation is about our own ego, trying to make ourselves seem clever while knocking down those around us. Once spoken, words can’t be taken back, and even if we do retract them they are like the bell that can’t be UN-rung. Our words often come back to haunt us. People will remember things we may have said in an offhand manner years before, and like a sharp-edged boomerang, our words have come back to hurt us. So, we should think twice before speaking, and consider whether what we are about to say is true, kind and necessary.

OUR BROTHER JESUS
S
aint Augustine refers, in one of his sermons, to Jesus as “our brother” and reminds us that Jesus became our brother out of merciful goodness. If Jesus is the son of God and we call God our father then it follows logically that Jesus is our brother. God is both our spiritual and metaphysical father because he is the source of our existence. God’s choosing to come to earth and put on human flesh in the person of Jesus makes him our brother in the metaphysical sense that we share the same physical constitution, and the teachings of Jesus, as revealed in the Gospels makes him our spiritual brother. Jesus speaks so convincingly tous in the spiritual realm because he is truly human and truly divine, and he reminds us that we all have the spark of the divine within us—the kingdom of heaven is within us (Luke 17:21). But he also tells us that those who hear the word of God and put it into practice are his brothers (Luke 8:21). So remember that you have a brother in heaven who is also close at hand, ready to help in times of trouble and a sure guide on our journey home. Brother Jesus, keep us safe in your care and guide us to our heavenly home.

Christian Fellowship Church was founded in 1968 as a place where Christians from all denominational backgrounds could join together in worshipping the Lord Jesus Christ in a family atmosphere. Instead, we hear where the Bible meets us in the reality of our life today here and now, as the Spirit of God is alive and well and at work in whatever’s happening in our lives, good, bad, or ugly. And the lively music will leave the gospel tapping your toes all week! Our congregation is full of sinners and saints, who are focused on being God’s mission to our little corner of the world. We feel a special calling to the young people
in our community, and offer a Wednesday after-school program for elementary-aged kids during the school year. In this “On God’s Wings” program, we get to spend time with the kiddos, sharing stories from the Bible, singing, doing activities, and hosting a meal each week for the children and their families. We have women’s and men’s groups that gather for fellowship and Bible study, a joy-filled group of quilters who meet together weekly, and a group of youth engaged in being the church. Our people see beyond the walls of the church building, knowing that the Word of God is not simply a story to learn, but a message of forgiveness and salvation that transforms us daily, brings new life, and sends us out into God’s world to share this good news, in word and in deed. FRIENDSHIP
T
here are many different kinds of friendship; and they often initially develop simply because of shared common interests. For example, friends who play tennis or go bowling together may never see each other off of the court or outside the bowling alley. Friendships can also develop because the friends listen to each other and share intimate parts of their lives with each other. The listening and sharing that take place in these relationships usually create a bond of love and caring which makes them deeper and more meaningful than the friendships of shared common interests. But, there is an even deeper level of friendship wherein friends value and respect each other’s goodness. These friends may share common interests, and may listen and share intimacies with each other, but they also believe in the essential goodness of the other. This type of friendship is deeper than the other two, because the bonds created by respect for the friend’s goodness is not a transitory thing like the shared interest or the shared intimacy. In fact, we may
withhold our deepest love or friendship from those whom we deem not to be good people. Conversely, when we really love someone we may feel the need to be a good person so as not to lose the respect of our beloved. And, we may be more honest with a friend about their moral failings than we would be with a casual acquaintance. So, we should make ourselves a good friend by cultivating virtue, and take our responsibility to our friends seriously, even if that means occasionally pointing out their moral failings, which we should always do in private. The advice to cultivate your friendships is good advice on a variety of levels. Having good and reliable friends provides the social support that all of us need. And there is good evidence that loneliness is a serious health risk, increasing your risk of high blood pressure, depression and dementia. The advice to cultivate your friendships is also particularly relevant in today’s highly mobile society. People often relocate because of school or work, and while technology can keep us connect-

ed even when we’re halfway around the world, too often we spend our free time diverted from the quality time we should be spending with people who matter to us. There are many ways to cultivate our friendships, and they all start with spending time with our friends and communicating with them when we can’t be with them physically. As always, the golden rule applies to friendship as to every other relationship, and counsels us to do the things for our friends that we would like them to do for us, such as lending an ear, helping in times of need, and just being there to share the good times and the bad.

Lives
in Order
If you are unhappy with your life, or with certain aspects of it—and everyone has some area of their life that needs work—perhaps it is because you have tried to manage it by yourself. It might relieve you to know that God has a better plan for your life than you do, and it takes a lot of the pressure off ourselves when we decide to live by God’s plan. We aren’t responsible for our being here, since none of us created ourselves, and so it shouldn’t surprise us to realize that our Creator already has a plan for us. We should of course take some responsibility for our own well-being, striving to be as happy, healthy and virtuous as possible, but putting the responsibility for our entire life and life plan on ourselves is too heavy a burden. It is folly to try to be the engineer and director of our own lives. Many of us have lived poorly by following our own path and need some help from God to get it together. Consider God’s word as a user’s manual for how to get your life together. If you’re not sure what God has planned for you, a good place to start in the Bible is the Book of Proverbs. Prayer “Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they should always pray and not give up.” Luke 18:1
I
t is possible to live a virtuous life by simply adhering to the universal rules of morality which every moral philosophy and religion dictates: Be honest, respect other’s property, help each other when they are in need, etc. But it is not possible to live a godly life without prayer, for without prayer we lack that openness to the experience of God which is required if we are to be true Christians. God’s grace is abundant, but it cannot be given without being asked for; grace must be freely asked for and freely given. This can only happen through sincere and heartfelt prayer. Over and over again we see throughout the Bible that God’s chosen ones come to him on bent knees with prayer and supplication. The godly call upon God in their time of need whereas the godless rely upon their own strength. Prayer, at bottom, is nothing more than a spirit of openness to what God is telling us, but it is also a conversation, with us asking God for help, and thanking Him for his many gifts to us. PAGE 24
Teach Us How to Pray
It is noteworthy that the disciples requested of Jesus that He teach them how to pray. These were religious men who had been following Jesus for quite some time. How could it be that they did not know how to pray? Don’t we all pray, almost instinctively, every time we have some crisis or serious felt need? Prayer is virtually universal. Every culture has its forms of prayer, and almost everyone instinctively says something like “Dear God, help me through this” in times of crisis. There is also the near-universal clasping of hands in prayer and the exclamations of “Oh my God” when we

see something horrific or are in crisis. Even many of our everyday expressions contain a simple prayer. “Goodbye” is etymologically connected to the expression “God be with you,” just as “adios” in Spanish literally means “to God.” Many of us also utter prayers spontaneously in times of joy or wonder, thanking God or praising Him for a beautiful sunset or a blessed turn of events. “Alleluia” is one such expression. And sometimes there are cross-cultural borrowings of prayer without us knowing it; the Spanish word “ojala,” which means “hopefully” is derived from the Arabic meaning “may God will it.” Which brings us back to the disciples’ request. In answering their request, Jesus gave them the Lord’s prayer, which tells us, among other things, to pray that God’s will be done. How do you pray? There is no limit to the kinds of prayer which are possible, since prayer is any genuine attempt to communicate with God, but some common types of prayer are listed on the next page. PRAISE
There is something in us which wants and needs to praise God. There are times when our spirit just seems to overflow with joy and we simply can’t help praising God. There are many ways that this can be done, and a variety of words which can express God’s praise, but this seems to be a near universal sentiment. Most of the Psalms are hymns of praise, and throughout the Bible we are told repeatedly to praise God, even being told the seemingly paradoxical advice to praise and thank Him in all circumstances (1 Thessalonians 5:18). Psalm 150 exhorts everything which has breath to praise the Lord! And indeed, it sometimes seems that even the animals are praising the Lord. The animal kingdom seems to have something joyous imprinted in the very fiber of its being, for when we are moving and breathing and fulfilling our God-given functions there is something inherently joyful. So let all that you do be a praising of God, and remember that our primary purpose is to praise God.
MEDITATIVE PRAYER
A type of prayer which is often overlooked because it is more akin to meditation than to prayer, is when we simply feel ourselves in the presence of God who cares for and about us. The sense that there is a Supreme Being who is not indifferent to our suffering should become a way of being in the world, and something which we should strive for constantly. As a spiritual discipline, meditation can take many forms. One form of meditation is to ponder a piece of scripture, for instance, repeating a short verse, such as “Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Meditation can be done with eyes open or closed, and one can meditate while outdoors by simply contemplating nature. Taking in the glory of creation and reflecting on God’s handiwork is a form of meditation that can be practiced while looking at the trees and listening to the birds, or even while watching insects. It helps to have a quiet place to meditate, away from the distractions of daily life, especially the phone and the computer screen, and a relaxed but upright posture is usually best. THANKS
Thanksgiving isn’t just a holiday, but a state of mind that can improve our well-being any time of year. There is ample evidence from countless studies that taking time to give thanks and counting our blessings on a regular basis makes us happier. It is good that we officially take time out to do this once a year, but we would all do well to keep giving thanks every day. In fact, it’s a great way to start and end each day, for instance, by thanking God for another day each morning as we awake, and thanking Him each night as we lay down to sleep for what went well. Thank God also for the chance to learn and improve from what didn’t go well. Always remember to be thankful for the small blessings too.
CONFESSION OR CONTRITION
Confession or contrition is where we confess our sins to God. This is often framed in terms of what we have done wrong or what we have failed to do, and should include improper or unkind thoughts, and true remorse. There is something cathartic about confessing our sins. Just as good medicine heals the body, a good confession heals the soul.
PETITION
Petition is the prayer which asks for God’s help. These prayers are sometimes thought unnecessary, since God presumably knows better than we do what we need, but it certainly feels right to ask God for help.
INTERCESSORY PRAYER
God answers prayer and praying for others is very important in our daily lives. Intercessory prayer is effective and powerful, and God responds when someone takes the time to pray for another individual. Praying for others does not have to be long or time consuming. If an emergency vehicle goes by, a quick “Heavenly Father, please help whoever needs assistance from this emergency call, I ask this in the name of Jesus”. Quite often we may want to do something for someone, but we don’t know what to do. We can always pray for them. Praying is a wonderful and amazing activity. It has been around for thousands of years, and God is always there waiting and listening for us. Quite often you may hear of a group of people or a church group praying for someone; this is a wonderful communal activity that benefits both the person receiving and the person asking for our Lord’s blessing.

We try to follow faithfully God’s Commandments and the Church’s teaching in our worship and in our daily lives. Most Holy Redeemer Church was built in Ogema in 1914 with Father Hugo Fell, O.S.B. as the pastor. Stones for the foundation were hauled gratis by farmers coming to town. Several other Benedictine
priests followed. In 1973, during the pastorship of Father Blaise Berres, O.S.B. a new church was built. The church hall with classrooms and an office were added in 1993. Since 1994 the parish has been faithfully served by the Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate. We are a welcoming community and encourage people to visit.

The Seventh-day Adventist church is a Protestant Christian church that believes very strongly in the shed blood of Jesus Christ. We believe Jesus lived, died and rose again that we might have eternal life if we accept that sacrifice that He has made for us. God loved us so much that He gave us His only begotten Son that we might have eternal life. Because of that great love for us, we as Seventh-day Adventists have a desire to take the gospel to the whole world and let others know how they too can experience that love and have eternal life. The mission of the Seventh-day Adventist Church is to proclaim to all people the everlasting gospel in the context of the three Angels’ messages found in Revelation 14:6-12. Seventh-day Adventist churches literally circle the globe. Of the 238 recognized countries by the United Nations we have a presence in 216 of those countries. We have a network around the world of churches, hospitals, clinics, universities, colleges, and schools from pre-k through high school. The Seventh-day Adventist church was officially organized in 1863 and is recognized as the fastest growing Protestant church in the world today. Having grown from 5 million members in 1985 we now exceed 20 million members.
As a local church we belong to the ministerial alliance and work closely with other churches and organizations in helping our community. We have a Community Service Center with a Thrift store next to the church at 404 Richwood Road. This center is open to the public and also works with the Department of Human Services and other agencies in the area to provide assistance to those in need with clothing and household items. Another ministry that we have locally is the Adventist Christian School that provides Christian education for students from kindergarten through eighth grade. The school has been operating since 1915 and is open to anyone that would like to send their children. The school engages the students in various classroom and outdoor activities, which function as an integral part of the overall preparation of the student for a life of service for God and their community. The Hattie Goodman Chapel, known as “Shoreham Chapel,” located in Shoreham Village, at the intersection of County Road 22 and North Melissa Drive, between Lakes Melissa and Sallie. Services will continue through September 1, 2019. Sunday Service begins at 10:45 AM. The Shoreham Chapel is non-denominational (Biblically-based) and open to all. This Chapel has occupied a special place in the hearts of Minnesota lake country vacationers and residents since the turn of the century. In 1902 the chapel was built by Fredrick Goodman in memory of his wife Hattie. In those years pastoral duties were shared by several ministers until Rev. Gary Danielson started officiating in 1960, and then retired in 2006. On October 14, 2008, Pastor Danielson went on to see His Lord. Pastor Tim Cook is now the chapel’s inspirational leader, known for choosing a theme each summer. The chapel has indoor plumbing along with an area for gathering which includes the
following: a handicap ramp for entering the chapel, a complete kitchen and a bathroom. The chapel is also available to rent for weddings, funerals, baptisms, etc... Father Justin Luetmer, O.S.B. was the pastor at that time and the church was built with the help of a donation from his mother who
was a widow. The objective was to provide a more convenient location for the Indian parishioners to worship. The same church is still being used today. St. Benedict was served by Benedictine priests until 1983. Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate currently serve the parish today. We are a welcoming community and encourage people to visit.

MAKING SPACE FOR GOD IN YOUR LIFE I
f we want to have a closer relationship with God—and we should want this above all else—it is important to create the time and space necessary to do so. In much the same way that a new exercise or study regimen will probably require a change in our schedule, if we want to be a more spiritual person, we must carve out the time and space necessary for it. In our busy lives this usually entails finding time (and space) at the beginning or end of our day, since the middle of our day is usually filled up with work or school or taking care of family. God won’t force his way into our lives. If we want more of God in our lives, we should create the time and space for that to happen. There is a good reason

why most monks start their days early— it’s the only time that they aren’t likely to be interrupted by life’s other necessities. It is also important that the space where you pray or meditate be conducive to it. A quiet comfortable corner of a room is all that is necessary. Find some quiet time and space at the start or end of each day to make room for God in your life.
