Boat Safety This is the year you have finally decided to buy that boat you’ve been eyeing for some time. But, hold on a minute. There are a few things you should know about boating and boat safety before you buy. How about taking this quick quiz to see where you stand on these issues? 1. What information does a capacity plate contain and where must it be located on a boat? 2. What is a hull identification number (HIN)? When was it first required? 3. What are the two basic categories of boat design? 4. When a sailboat has its motor running, is it considered a power-driven vessel? 5. What are the two sets of navigation rules? 6. What are boat ropes called? 7. What are the five basic knots every boater should know? 8. What are the most common anchors found on pleasure boats? 9. What types of vessels are not required to carry day signals but must carry night signals when operating from sunset to sunrise? 10. What is the hailing and emergency channel? What is the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) channel? 11. How do you signal if you are in distress? How do you signal if you are not in distress? What form of radio is not recommended for use on a boat? Answers: 1. A capacity plate displays the maximum weight of persons onboard in pounds, the maximum carrying weight of the vessel in pounds and the maximum horsepower recommended for the boat. It is required by federal law to be visible in sight of the helm on motorized boats less than 20 feet long. 2. The hull identification number is the serial number of the boat that is necessary to title and register it. It is found on the

transom on the starboard side above the waterline and has been required on boats built since 1972. 3. The two basic boat designs are displacement and planning vessels. A displacement vessel is designed to move through water with a minimum of propulsion, while a planning vessel is designed to rise up and ride on top of the water with the application of power. 4. Yes. 5. The two sets of navigation rules are inland and international. Inland rules apply to all vessels upon the inland waters of the United States and to vessels of the United States on the Great Lakes Canadian waters as long as there is no conflict with Canadian law. International rules apply to vessels upon the high seas and all waters connected therewith navigable by seagoing vessels. 6. Boat ropes are called lines. 7. The five basic knots are the cleat hitch, which is used to secure a boat to the dock; the bowline or the king of knots, which serves as a temporary loop to attach to a cleat; the square knot (reef knot), which is used for tying things down; the round turn and two half hitches, which is used to permanently tie to a mooring; and the clove hitch, which is used to tie temporarily to a piling. 8. The three basic type of anchors are plow, mushroom and fluke, or danforth type anchors. 9. Manually propelled boats, open sailboats less than 26 feet long not equipped with propulsion machinery, boats participating in parades, races or regattas, and recreational boats less than 16 feet long all fit into this category. 10. Channel 16 is the hailing and emergency channel. Channel 22A is the USCG’s channel. 11. “Mayday, mayday, mayday” should be used in distress; “Coast Guard” should be used when not in distress. Most Coast Guard stations don’t monitor Citizen’s Band (CB) radio frequencies.

A bird’s paradise Do you enjoy watching the birds that inhabit your landscape? Would you like to attract more of them to your landscape? Lucky for you, you can with the right setting. The first step to transforming your landscape into a bird’s paradise is to provide a food supply for your feathered friends. One of the easiest ways to do so is through birdfeeders. To ensure a throng of birds inhabits your landscape throughout most of the year, place birdfeeders in areas all over your yard. While birdfeeders can serve as a food source, they should not be the main source, however. In addition to birdseed, you should have a variety of food-bearing plants in your yard. Some food-bearing plants that some birds may find attractive include: • Asters • Black-eyed Susans • Coreopsis • Daisies • Forget-me-nots • Holly • Marigolds • Poppies • Primrose • Sunflowers • Thistles • Viburnum • Virginia creeper When selecting plants for your yard, keep in mind that birds prefer sour berries to sweet ones and like to eat insects, so any plants that have sour berries or attract insects will work well. Whatever you choose, try to avoid invasive or poisonous plants, like sumac. If you’re looking to attract a specific type of bird to your lawn and garden, research the plants that bird likes and incorporate them into your landscape. Along with food, you need to supply

a source of water for birds to drink and bathe in. Birdbaths are an easy solution, and a number are available. Shallow basins or troughs will also do the trick. However, since birds enjoy moving water, you may want to include a water feature in your landscape that circulates water. While you could go all out with a large fountain, you could also just as easily scale back and use something smaller. Shelter is another important feature of a bird’s paradise, and you must provide birds with a place to perch and rest that will protect them from the elements and predators. Evergreen trees like cedar, pine and spruce are a good choice, as they allow birds to crawl into them and keep predators out. Ornamental trees are another good choice that will not only provide shelter but perhaps even some food in the form of berries or insects. Trees that birds find attractive include crabapple trees, flowering dogwood trees and Japanese snowdrop trees. In addition to trees, you may want to provide some birdhouses. These will also serve as shelter, as long as they are deep enough to protect the nest and have a small hole near the top and a cleanout panel. The size of the hole and orientation to the house will determine what birds inhabit it. To keep inhabitants comfortable and safe, place birdhouses in a quiet, shady spot out of the reach of predators and secure them firmly to the surrounding structure. For complete guidelines on setting up birdhouses, consult a lawn and garden specialist. Turning your landscape into a bird paradise takes some time and effort, but it will all be worth it when your landscape is flittering with feathered activity throughout much of the year. Enjoy!

Rock gardens You have decided that this is the year you are finally going to plant that garden. But you want something slightly less traditional. How about a rock garden? Creating your own rock garden is not as hard as you think. As with any garden, you must first decide where you are going to put your rock garden and what you want the final product to look like. A traditional rock garden has tiered rocks with plants that are less than a foot high. But who wants to be traditional? With rocks being the most important thing in a rock garden, let’s start there. When selecting rocks for your garden, find ones that are native to your area. These will be the easiest and cheapest to get. Keep in mind that you will need some small rocks, but the majority of the rocks you use will need to be big and irregularly shaped. However, there is nothing set in stone that says you can’t use driftwood, stumps or antique tools in your rock garden. It seems that no matter where you live, the recommended rock is limestone. Limestone is soft and porous, allowing moisture to seep in. Limestone also has depressions that can be filled with dirt for planting moss and lichens. If you are lucky enough to have a steep slope where you have trouble keeping grass and other plants, you have an ideal spot for a rock garden. Otherwise, you can create your rock garden on a mound or tiered area built up to about two-and-a half feet. Next comes the placement of the rocks. You will need to bury each rock, leaving the top third showing. You should set up the rocks to look as natural as possible. Let the soil around the rocks settle for a couple of days. Then look at the arrangement to make sure everything is where you want it. Next, decide what kind of plants you

want in your garden. The plants you select should be right for your climate and exposure. For those of you who don’t want to fidget with your garden over and over, try planting plants that only bloom in the spring. For splashes of color, plant a few annuals, herbs and heathers. Some perennials that you might want to include are: balloon flower, calla lily, crocus, snowdrop, wand flower and phlox. Some annuals to include are: tidy tips, baby’s breath, summer savory, torenai and zinnia. The care you give your rock garden will depend on the types of plants you use. Occasionally, you will need to loosen the soil with a small garden utensil and add compost or manure. You will also need to cut back any plants after flowering, remove any dead portions, and when a plant becomes too big for its space, divide it up. Don’t let weeds get into nooks and crannies-they can take over a space if left unchecked. You will also need to check regularly for insects and slugs (they like the shelter that the rocks give). Plants in a rock garden are more exposed in the winter, so before the first freeze, put down a thick layer of heavy mulch. If you want something to accessorize your rock garden, you may want to create a stream, waterfall, pond or dish rock (a rock with bowl-like depressions that collect rainwater). In order to protect the soil around the rock garden from getting too much water, make sure these areas are well contained. Rock gardens don’t have to be grand in scale. In fact, if done right, you can have rock gardens within a rock garden. Creating a rock garden may sound like a lot of work, but in the end, you will get a garden that mimics nature and is different than your average garden.
