Fresh off the truck: Farmers markets popular in Detroit Lakes Homegrown veggie and fruit lovers are in luck because the Lakes Area Farmers Market is open every Saturday and Tuesday at Peoples Park (across from Freeman Arena). From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., more than 20 area vendors will be set up with fresh produce, artisan breads, locally produced meats and eggs, handmade soaps and lotions, maple syrup and honey. Spring plants for your garden will also be on hand for shoppers. Just because you’ve been to one doesn’t mean that’s all she wrote, because as the season progresses and changes, so do the products being sold. New this year, one of the vendors will be an artist doing live pottery demonstrations in between selling his art, and in late summer or early fall there will be some food-making demonstrations as well. The Farmers Markets will continue to be open through October, and possibly even into the beginning of November, depending on the harvest.

This summer, a whole state full of those heroes are coming to Detroit Lakes for the annual Minnesota State Firefighter’s Conference, which is being held June 8 – 11. The conference is expected to pull in roughly 400 guests of the firefighting communities from around the state. This means it’s all hands on deck for the 26 Detroit Lakes firefighters hosting the conference. Most of the events are open to the public, including a golf tournament, vendor show and more.

BIKING BECOMING

BIGGER WITH AREA TRAILS biking enthusists finding more local options

A

h, the feeling of the wind blowing through your hair, the soft sound of life whizzing by, as your muscles work hand in hand with your heart to continue propelling you forward. Biking has grown in the Detroit Lakes area over the past few years, thanks to efforts to create more bike paths around the city, as well as those around the county. The Fish Hatchery Recreation Trail is a 1.1 mile paved recreation trail that follows the Pelican River from the western shores of Detroit Lake to Lake Sallie at Dunton Locks County Park. The Richwood Road Recreation Trail parallels County Highway 21 to North Tower Road. This one-mile paved trail provides walkers and bikers in the northern area of Detroit Lakes quick access to the heart of the city. The Lakeside Recreation Trail offers a 16 | SUMMER SCENE | JUNE 2016

The paved 1.25 mile recreation trail runs from North Shore Drive to East Shore Drive along the frontage road and U.S. Highway 10. The Heartland Trail runs from Cass Lake to Park Rapids, and will eventually extend to Moorhead. Preliminary construction has begun along Highway 10, and although legislative dollars and construction sticking points have delayed the project longer than advocates would like, the plan is still in place to get that trail up and going for biking enthusiasts looking for a nice, long trip. The Shakedown Detroit Mountain Recreation Area has also created itself a fun biking getaway, and it fully intends on using it to

GET OUT AND GOLF

TRY ONE OF THE MANY GOLF COURSES IN THE AREA

I

t’s a big year for the Detroit Country Club, as the premier golf course turns 100 years old this summer. Festivities include a dance and activities surrounding the famed Pine to Palm tournament, which this year is being held August 8-14. A century ago, tourists from Canada and Chicago let it be known that they would enjoy a golf course when they visited Detroit Lakes (then still called ‘Detroit’), and so Merchants National Bank President J.E. Bakke got the ball rolling. He and his cashier, Alf Knudson, bought enough acreage for an 18-hole golf course. Half the land was being used as a corn field. The owners of that farmland, the Hustons, maintained the golf course. Their family farmhouse eventually even became the first Detroit Country Club Club House. Although stockholders first owned the golf club, they gave it to the city in the 1930’s so that it could become a municipality and obtain federal money. 18 | SUMMER SCENE | JUNE 2016

With those federal funds, the 18-hole course was reconstructed, and the city then turned around and leased it back to the original shareholders. The location of the course, located between Lake Sallie and Lake Melissa near Shoreham, was a prime location for tourists. In 1931, planning began for the first Pine to Palm Golf Tournament, and 25 years later, that tournament had grown to 400 people, but was capped off at 350. While the 18-hole course has kept the same basic footprint since 1935, there have been numerous modifications since then. The Detroit Country Club is a 36-hole golf facility located five miles south of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59. The premier golf courses include Par 71, 18-hole Pine to Palm and Par 64, 18-hold Lakeview courses. For more information, contact 218-847-5790; www.detroitcountryclub.com.

arly summer is a wonderful time to quietly observe the young of spring. Look for deer fawns hiding behind their mothers, bear cubs exploring their new world and eaglets demanding to be fed. Experience the vibrant colors and fragrances of early summer woodland wildflowers, including the showy pink lady slipper. Listen for songbirds as they settle in for the summer season. rituals of spring. Portions of the refuge are closed to the public during this crucial time, but many viewing opportunities still exist. The most optimum times for viewing wildlife occur around sunrise and sunset. But sometimes even an afternoon visit can be rewarding to the quiet, watchful observer. To increase your chances of seeing wildlife, explore the edges of lakes, marshes and meadows of the five-mile Blackbird Wildlife Drive. If you feel inclined to exercise, hike the two-mile-long Old Indian Hiking Trail and experience

the beauty of the maple basswood forest. Another option is to venture out on the North Country Trail, which traverses 14 miles through the southern half of the refuge. Fishing Try your luck in one of our five lakes open to fishing. There are many varieties of fish to be caught, including crappie, walleye, sunfish, northern pike and bass. A fishing map and regulations can be obtained at the refuge information kiosks or the visitor center. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

a teacher in the forest

O

ften heard and rarely seen in the forests of Tamarac refuge is the Ovenbird. Its loud staccato song increases in volume, sounding like “tea-cher TEA-cher TEACHER.” This ground walking warbler has an olive-brown back, dull-orange cap and a spotted breast that blends well with the forest understory. The Ovenbird gets its name from its covered nest. The nest is carefully constructed of leaves, grasses, stems, thin roots, mosses and hair on the ground. The dome and side entrance make it resemble a brick oven. Camouflaged into the forest floor, nests are difficult to spot. However, when flushed from the nest, the female performs a crippled-bird display to distract predators. Three to six eggs will be laid in this cozy covered home. Typically found in relatively mature, large, contiguous tracts of deciduous or mixed deciduous/coniferous closed-canopy forest, this bird is found to favor territories with a deep leaf litter and less ground cover. Ovenbirds feed on insects, spiders and

The future success of Ovenbirds appears to depend on the continued existence of its core habitat, large tracts of closed-canopy forests. Tamarac Refuge staff strive to protect and maintain healthy contiguous tracts of woodlands. For example, some of the small woodland openings once created by farmsteads are being left to fill in with trees once again. Large tracts of forests are home to many vulnerable species. The staff is even looking for ways to collaborate with adjacent landowners to enhance the extent of healthy forests beyond the boundaries of the refuge. Pultizer-prize winning poet Robert Frost wrote Oven Bird back in 1916. I wonder if Frost could have possibly imagined that this bird population that “everyone has heard” would ever be threatened?

The Oven Bird BY ROBERT FROST other invertebrates found on or near the forest floor. They no doubt play an important role in the ecology of North American forests, and add a pleasant touch of sound to our world. Unfortunately, Breeding Bird Census data shows that populations of Ovenbirds are declining. Scientists report that Ovenbirds have been negatively affected by forest fragmentation. These small sections of forest have more edge habitat that invites wildlife species that infringe on the Ovenbirds territory. Fragmented habitat creates a higher risk of nest predation and brood parasitism. Studies have also shown that Ovenbirds are negatively affected by disturbances such as forest roads, power line corridors and chronic industrial noise. Increased density of ground vegetation and light levels following the loss of elm trees to Dutch elm disease in Minnesota was associated with a dramatic decline in Ovenbird density.

There is a singer everyone has heard, Loud, a mid-summer and a mid-wood bird, Who makes the solid tree trunks sound again. He says that leaves are old and that for flowers Mid-summer is to spring as one to ten. He says the early petal-fall is past When pear and cherry bloom went down in showers On sunny days a moment overcast; And comes that other fall we name the fall. He says the highway dust is over all. The bird would cease and be as other birds But that he knows in singing not to sing. The question that he frames in all but words Is what to make of a diminished thing.

FUN IN THE PARK

live, local talent provides spark to summer nights

T

e Detroit Lakes city Park is certainly a place for good, family entertainment in the summertime, as live performances create a festive, summertime atmosphere that draws people out time and time again. Tuesdays in the Park Every Tuesday night in the summer, live musical performances can be heard from the band shell of the park, as people gather around with lawn chairs and blankets to take in the free performances. The Tuesdays in the Park summer concert series opens Tuesday, June 7 and continues weekly through the end of August. The concert series is always kicked off the by the Lakes Area Community Concert Band, and continues with various musical acts. Local favorites like Detroit Lakes 26 | SUMMER SCENE | JUNE 2016

Police Chief Tim Eggebraaten take the stage with music that will get people up and wanting to dance, as do regional performers who ‘wow’ the crowds with a more unconventional, unique sound. All performances begin at 7 p.m., and will be preceded by a community picnic hosted by the Lakes Area Habitat for Humanity, starting at 6 p.m. In case of rain, the concerts will be held inside the Pavilion. Shakespeare in the Park Shakespeare lovers, “to thine own self be true” and check out the performances in Detroit Lakes called Shakespeare in the Park. One of Shakespeare’s best bestknown historical dramas, “Henry IV, Part I” is this year’s show. It tells the story of the troubled reign of Henry Bolingbroke as King of England during the early 15th century. Plagued

by political unrest, court intrigues and the wastrel behavior of his dissolute son, Prince Hal, Henry must defend his throne against the machinations of those who seek to depose him. These political intrigues and battlefield rebellions are juxtaposed with liberal doses of humor, taken from the rollicking adventures of the aforementioned Prince Hal and his cheerfully debauched companion, Falstaff. “Henry IV Part I” will be presented in six different performances, with opening night set for Friday, June 24 at 7 p.m. Additional shows are set for June 25, 27 and 30 as well as July 1-2. All performances will take place at the Detroit Lakes City Park Bandshell. There is no admission fee. Though it takes place outdoors, Shakespeare in the Park is hosted by the Historic Holmes Theatre.
