Pictured are ballroom dancers at the fair in 1958, along with two undated photos showing side-by-side Ferris wheels and other rides and games on the old Midway. The fair has grown and evolved over its 125 years, but its spirit and mission have remained largely the same — and it’s as beloved an event today as it was then.

BECKER COUNTY FAIR  JULY 25-28, 2018

Quite a fair Becker County Fair is a time-honored treasure By Marie Johnson mtjohnson@dlnewspapers.com Is there any summer event more universally beloved than a fair? From the rides to the food to the animals to the entertainment and everything else that a good fair encompasses, these classic celebrations are true people-pleasers. In its 125th year, the Becker County Fair is a time-honored example of all that a county fair should be. Going on at the fairgrounds in Detroit Lakes July 25-28, the fair will feature 4-H and FFA exhibits and livestock shows, live music for people of all ages, kids’ games, a demo derby, tractor parade, pageant, multiple food

vendors, wristband ride specials and much more. Entertainment will include the crowd-favorite demo derbies, the 10th annual tractor parade, juggler Steve Russell, Minnesota-based country singers The Jensen Sisters, accordion player Ethel Duenow, childrens’ singalong show Old McDonald Had a Banjo, musician ventriloquist David Malberg and much more. There is no gate fee to get in to the fair, and parking on the grounds is just $2 (or free if you park on the street). Keeping things as affordable as possible is a goal of the Fair Board’s, says Fair Manager and Fair Board President Keith Sonnenberg

The Rides

By Marie Johnson mtjohnson@dlnewspapers.com

The fair’s Midway will be full of fun and fast-paced rides again this year, with more than 20 classic and new rides for kids and adults. Amusement Attractions, a traveling Midway company based out of Florida, will be returning to the Becker County Fair for another year with their array of “kiddie rides to spectaculars,” as they describe it on their website. The Tilt-A-Whirl, Ferris Wheel, Zipper, Carousel, Fun Slide, Spider, bumper cars, mini-coaster for kids and many other rides are all classics that the company usually sets up at its many stops along its travels. “There will be all the same rides as before, plus probably a couple of new ones,” says Fair Manager Keith Sonnenberg. Amusement Attractions travels north from Florida every spring to service fairs and other community events at

locations between that far southern state all the way up to northern Minnesota, all summer long. In addition to the Becker County Fair, they service Minnesota events in Waseca, Litchfield, New Ulm and others. The company provides not only rides, but also carnival-style games, rest stops, benches and some concessions.

NEED-TO-KNOW INFO ABOUT THE MIDWAY: ► Discounted rides (armband for $20) from 5 p.m. to close on Wednesday, July 25 for fairgoers who bring two nonperishable items for the food pantry ► Discounted rides (three armbands for $45 — must buy three) from 1-5 p.m. on Friday, July 27 for fairgoers who bring three nonperishable items for the food pantry ► $30 per armband Thursday and Saturday ► Midway opens at 5 p.m. Wednesday and 1 p.m. all other days ► ATMs will be available on site ► Credit cards will be accepted this year Tribune File Photo

The Food

By Marie Johnson mtjohnson@dlnewspapers.com

Fair food is just the best. From funnel cakes to french fries, cheese curds to foot long corn dogs, the deep-fried deliciousness is a temptation few can resist. Becker County Fair Manager Keith Sonnenberg says the 2018 fair will feature all the same tasty options as in years past, alongside a couple of potential, as-yet-unspecified new offerings. Sonnenberg says Hansen’s Foods, a Fergus Falls, Minn.-based concessions provider, will be returning to the fair again this year, offering a menu

of standards like burgers, fries, cotton candy and lemonade alongside fair favorites like deep fried pickles, fry bread tacos and caramel apples. Not all the details had been finalized yet at press time, but other vendor specialties will likely include boneless pork chop and grilled chicken breast sandwiches, hard and soft shell tacos, fruit smoothies, chicken pitas, Greekstyle gyros and more. In addition to the food trucks, the 4-H food stand will once again be in operation, serving up tasty hamburgers, steaks, and a few likely breakfast options on some mornings of the fair.

BECKER COUNTY FAIR  JULY 25-28, 2018

ne of the biggest fairs in the “ Ostate of Minnesota that donates to the food pantry. ” —Becker County Fair Manager Keith Sonnenberg

QUITE A FAIR: From page 2 carnival rides are offered during certain days of the week to people who bring in two nonperishable items for the local food shelf. “We’re one of the biggest fairs in the state of Minnesota that donates to the food pantry,” Sonnenberg says. “The fair’s carnival (Amusement Attractions, a traveling Midway company out of Florida) has said they can’t get anything near the amount of poundage that we get. We get almost two tons every

year; other fairs only get about 500-600 pounds… Last year had 2 ½ tons — almost 5,000 pounds. So Becker County is supporting its food pantry.” Like so many others, Sonnenberg loves the fair. He has been Fair Manager for the past two years, and has been on the Fair Board for more than three decades. The Becker County Fairgrounds are located at 1310 Rossman Avenue in Detroit Lakes, just two blocks north of Detroit Lake off West Lake Drive.

BECKER COUNTY FAIR  JULY 25-28, 2018

The Entertainment

A Grandstand Revival, Tractor Parade, Big Tent shows and more! An old-fashioned Grandstand Revival will kick off the entertainment at this year’s fair, on Wednesday, July 25. The free event will include live music by the Kent Dudley Band and a gospel message from local resident Dave Seaberg, a former auctioneer and longtime announcer for the fair’s annual Demolition Derby. “I believe this is a door the Lord has opened to bring a message of hope and healing to the community,” says Mickey Okeson, organizer of the inaugural event. Okeson and her husband, Charlie, were “stirred” by a visit to the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, N.C. this past winter — and when Reverend Graham passed away in February, she thought, “Who’s going to pick up that torch?” After thinking about it for awhile, Okeson came to the realization that the county fair was a perfect place to launch such an endeavor. Though she and her husband no longer have children competing in 4-H, they have continued to be involved with the fair “I was aware that they no longer have a grandstand event on Wednesday night,” she says, so she approached the Fair Board with the idea of holding

a Grandstand Revival on that night. She had already approached Seaberg, an old friend of the family, about leading the event. “I have always called him ‘the Billy Graham of Becker County,’” she says affectionately. Okeson looked to similar gospelthemed shows at the Minnesota State Fair, as well as other county fairs, for inspiration. Local pastor Brian Erickson suggested the idea of inviting Kent Dudley, a longtime staple of the Polk County Fair in Fertile, Minn. as well as the featured entertainment at other gospel-themed shows in and around his home near Bemidji. “We contacted him and he said he and his band were available,” Okeson said. “They will lead the worship and give their personal testimonies, along with Dave (Seaberg).” The Grandstand Revival gets underway at 6 p.m. on Wednesday — and unlike other grandstand events like the demolition derby, there is no charge to attend. The event is open to people of all faiths and backgrounds and is expected to last approximately two hours. For more information, contact Mickey Okeson at 218-841-6065. BECKER COUNTY FAIR  JULY 25-28, 2018

The Animals By Emily Driscoll edriscoll@dlnewspapers.com

Hogs and cattle and ducks, oh my! 4-H club members are getting ready for their biggest showcase of the year at the Becker County Fair, where they get to compete, auction livestock, and have fun. Fair Manager Keith Sonnenberg says, “We have a very large group of animals coming this year,” adding that, “the barn is going to be full.” The fair will feature a wide array of livestock this year: “Everything has increased a lot this year,” Sonnenberg says, so there should be plenty to show off. At press time, the schedule was to show rabbits and poultry during the

day Wednesday, then sheep later that evening, hogs Thursday morning, and beef later. Friday morning, the judges make their final decisions and then Saturday morning is when there’s a market auction. “They have bidders come in and bid on how the animals are placed. Grand champion beef will bring more money in an auction than the lower priced animals, and so on,” Sonnenberg says. Money earned at the auction helps the kids buy animals for next year. There will also be a petting zoo at the Children’s Barn at the fair, which features baby animals like ponies and chicks or ducks that have just hatched. Sonnenberg says there may be piglets this year, as well.

BECKER COUNTY FAIR  JULY 25-28, 2018

The Exhibits

Tribune Staff Report For 125 years, the Becker County Fair has been the penultimate place for locals to show off their gardening, homemaking, sewing and other creative skills — a direct route to the Minnesota State Fair for the best of the best from Becker County. This year, as in the past, exhibit entries are being accepted in a wide and diverse array of categories, from fruits and vegetables to home economics, needlework to fine arts and crafts. Fairgoers perusing the exhibits will see displays of original artwork and photography, homemade breads and cakes, hand-picked floral arrangements, homegrown cabbage and beans, farm-grown alfalfa and corn, canned peaches and

potatoes, jellies and jams, patchwork and pieced quilts, children’s clothing and much, much more — all products of the imaginations, hard work and dedication of local folks of all ages. For most divisions, Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Ribbons are awarded to exhibits judged to be the best in their class. Some divisions offer additional ribbons and other prizes. Exhibit entry and judging times vary throughout the fair. See the schedule of events in this publication for more information, or, for the most comprehensive information, see the 2018 Becker County Fair Premium book (available in print or online at www.dl-online.com — click on the “Magazine Rack” link).
