The iconic WE Fest country music festival, scheduled for Aug. 3-5 at Detroit Lakes’ Soo Pass Ranch, is turning 40 years old this summer — and the staff is gearing up to celebrate in style. “Technically, it’s 41 years, but we didn’t have a show in 2020,” says WE Fest General Manager Mark Bjerke. “So this is our 40th-anniversary show ... and we’re going to have a ‘birthday bash’ on Wednesday, Aug. 2.” Headliners for the festival were announced back in September and will include Kane Brown, Brad Paisley and Morgan Wallen. Wallen, who is making his WE Fest debut, is one of country music’s hottest new stars. “In true WE Fest tradition, we managed to book somebody right before they got really big,” Bjerke said. Paisley and Brown, meanwhile, have both played the festival before (Paisley, a few times, most recently in 2014, and Brown in 2017), and have strong fan bases of their own — as do the other artists in the lineup this year. Ernest, Bailey Zimmerman, Neal McCoy, Jo Dee Messina, Ashland Craft, Ben Burgess and Ashley Cooke. Cowboy Troy will return as Main Stage host for a second straight year. There will be additional entertainment and live music performances at both the Soo Pass Ranch Saloon and Barn Stage throughout the festival’s run as well. With so many popular acts on the schedule this year, it’s no big surprise that all of the VIP, grandstand and reserved seating (including the reserved lawn seats) are already sold out, as are the pit passes and several campgrounds. There are still three-day general admission tickets and camping packages available, however — including a brand-new “glamping” village in the Lake Sallie Campground, which was just announced in May. Though passes for this new WE Fest experience are in limited supply, “glampers” will have easy access to the festival’s West Gate entrance, as well as other amenities includSome WE Fest attendees raised their glasses for the camera after Tanya ing dedicated porTucker’s set in 2022. Phone lines are also open every Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 1-833-2WE-FEST. Bjerke said they have brought the ticket fulfillment operation back “in-house” this year, in the hope of avoiding some of the difficulties that some WE Fest attendees experienced in the days leading up to last year’s festival. “Tickets will be going out much earlier this year — in fact, some have already gone out.” They have also addressed the Wi-Fi reception difficulties that last year’s attendees experienced. “We’re installing a whole new Wi-Fi system, that we will own,” Bjerke said. “It’s getting installed at the end of May — and it will have up to 10G capacity.” Bjerke added that the ticketing and Wi-Fi issues were identified as the biggest problems with last year’s festival,
and “we really believe we’ve addressed those — we put forth a real extra effort (to do so).” The RFID wristbands and “cashless” purchasing system, which made their debut at last year’s festival, will be back again in 2023 — and attendees will have even more

food and merchandise options to choose from. “We’ll have more food and merch vendors than in the past — and there will be 24-hour food vendors in both the East Village and campgrounds,” Bjerke said, adding that the East Village will be expanding “quite a bit.” The Country Club, which also debuted last summer as an add-on experience for general admission ticket holders, is being expanded this year as well, he added. A patio area has been added, and other amenities included with membership include even more exclusive live music performances and surprise guests, discounted drinks (along with a free WE Fest mug), and light snacks. “We’re also doing a little reconfiguration in some of our bars, for faster service,” Bjerke said. Most of the construction this year, however, is taking place in the festival’s backstage area, where a new,
two-story “Prancing Pony” is being built to provide hospitality services for WE Fest artists and support staff, stage crews, sponsors and other special guests. “The main floor is for artists and backstage crew ... the upper deck is for sponsors and other paid members,” Bjerke said. Next year’s backstage project will be to construct a whole new building dedicated to artist dressing rooms and showers; this year, those amenities will be provided through portable facilities, he added. Besides all of these projects, “we’ll be jazzing up the place, getting it all spruced up (for the festival),” Bjerke said, adding that siding, windows and even some roofing on various buildings will be replaced or revamped, and some facilities will be getting a fresh coat of paint as well. Vicki Gerdes / Summerscape
WE Fest's backstage area is getting some major renovations this spring in anticipation of its 40th-anniversary celebration on Aug. 3-5, 2023. One of the biggest undertakings is the replacement of its Prancing Pony Cafe with a new, two-story structure that will provide hospitality services for Main Stage artists, backstage crews, sponsors and other special guests. On tap for next year is the construction of a new building that will house artist dressing rooms and shower facilities.

As summer begins, the hootin’ and hollering will soon start in Perham. The city is home to the International Turtle Races, which is known to draw thousands of participants and spectators each year. Turtle races are held every Wednesday in June, July and August. There is also a turtle race on Friday, June 16, as part of the annual Turtle Fest celebration. Race registration starts at 10 a.m. with races starting at 10:30 a.m. People can bring a turtle, or use one of the 30 turtles on-site, for race events. The house turtles are brought to the venue by a DNR-approved collector, former Perham Area Chamber of Commerce Director Dan Schroeder explained. He added the turtles are cared for in a natural habitat where they eat live minnows, live outside, swim in a pond and sunbathe on rocks. Every Wednesday they take a group trip to Perham to visit the big city and get some exercise. Turtle races are as simple as it sounds. A racer picks a turtle, places it on the start line, and the first turtle to cross the finish line wins its temporary owner a prize. “The winner of each heat gets $1,” said current Perham Area Chamber of Commerce Director Nick Murdock. “Then the winners come back and race in the grand finale. The top three get a prize package.” Leah Monson, the marketing director for the Perham Area Chamber of Commerce, said the prize package includes gift certificates from local businesses, as well as trinkets and treasures. While receiving a prize can be a lot of fun, attendees all appear to be winners. Schroeder explained families 14 | SUMMERSCAPE 2023
are gifted time to connect, share laughs and make memories. In between the races, families are often seen visiting shops, grabbing a bite and joining in with the other activities going on in the busy little town along U.S. Highway 10. “We also give narrated trolley rides during the turtle races,” Schroeder said. “They tour downtown. The tour is about 20 minutes.” The adventurers visiting Perham may also enjoy visiting one of the many parks that offer paved bike paths and the public beach. “There are all kinds of hidden gems in Perham,” Murdock said. Schroeder estimated about 90 percent of turtle race participants are visitors to the Perham community. Among the visitors are people from all over the country, and beyond. The turtle races began when police officers decided to give kids something to do during summer in the late 1970s, recalled Schroeder. The races began pulling visitors to town and by the 2000s more activities were added to the summer fun event, such as face painting, vendors and games. With more people attending, the organizers decided to find it a permanent home. Schroeder recalled it started behind the post office, then it moved to the Service Food parking lot before landing at the City Hall Park (also known as Turtle Park). In addition to Turtle Races, Perham offers Turtle Fest June 14-18. Turtle Fest offers tons of events, from a street fair to a parade, fireworks to concerts, pickleball tournaments to eating contests and more. A full list of events can be found at perham.com/turtlefest.

Vehicles may park on the grass field off 3rd Avenue NW and 6th Street NW. The grounds are the site of Perham’s annual Pioneer Festival and Black Powder Rendezvous events.
► The Wildflower Trail is for both bikers and nature walkers. A 2.5-mile trail from Cottingham Park to Bullard’s Bluff Park allows for hiking, ATV riding and horseback riding.

ON WATER
Swimming, fishing, boating
The most popular public place to take a dip in the area is Detroit Lakes’ mile-long, sandy City Beach. It’s open to everyone, but dogs and alcohol are not allowed. The space is quick to fill with people in the summers, usually being the busiest during the hottest hours of the day. Tanning and swimming are always popular here, and boat rentals are available right on the beach, at J&K Marina, or a few miles east at the Holiday Inn Marina. A number of restaurants are just across the street from the beach, and food trucks and the Ice Cream Truck regularly visit the neighboring City Park.

Fun Things to Do This Summer (That We Haven’t Already Told You About) BY DETROIT LAKES TRIBUNE, PERHAM FOCUS AND WADENA PIONEER JOURNAL STAFF 1. ENJOY A COUNTY FAIR The rides, the games, the entertainment, the animals, the displays – and let’s not forget about the food! What’s not to love about a good county fair? Detroit Lakes, Perham and Wadena are each home to one, with the Becker County Fair held at the Detroit Lakes Fairgrounds (at the junction of Rossman Avenue and West Lake Drive), the East Otter Tail County Fair held at the fairgrounds in Perham (at the end of 4th Street SE.) and the Wadena County Fair at the fairgrounds in Wadena (400 Ash Ave. NW.). The Becker County Fair is July 26-29, the East Otter Tail County Fair is July 21-24 and the Wadena County Fair is June 21-25. 2. PIONEERS IN PERHAM Food, fun and history: Perham’s Pioneer Fest is Aug. 19-20, held at Perham’s Pioneer Village. Stop by to admire vintage farming equipment, tractor pulls and more. There will be arts and crafts, along with vendors and plenty of demonstrations that are fun for the whole family. 3. ROLL INTO ROLLAG FOR SOME OLD-FASHIONED FUN Every year over Labor Day weekend, the tiny town of Rollag, 30 minutes west of Detroit Lakes, hosts a sprawling gathering of thousands of people, who convene in this out-of-the-way place for the annual Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion. The event is huge, and
hugely fun, with hundreds of classic steam engine demonstrations and exhibits spread over 210 rolling acres, along with play areas for kids, train rides around the grounds, and plenty of food booths. Visit rollag.com for more info. 4. WHO IS GOING TO BE THE NEXT MISS WADENA? Another year, another battle for the crown! Once again, a group of Wadena-Deer Creek High School juniors and seniors will battle it out for the title of Miss Wadena. This year’s pageant takes place on June 25 at 7 p.m. at the Wadena Memorial Auditorium. This year’s theme is “Be Someone’s Hero.” 5. GIVE ME A MOMENT, I’M THINKING Which is more important to protect: the environment or the economy? Stop. You don’t need to put your thinking cap on for this one, four of the country’s greatest armchair philosophers have already done that. All you need to do is show up to the 30th Annual Great American Think-Off at the New York Mills Public School Auditorium on June 10 at 7 p.m. Four contestants will debate and defend their position in front of a live audience. The audience will cast their vote and the winner will be deemed “America’s Greatest Thinker of 2023.” The kick-off event is June 9 at the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center, where the public will have the opportunity to meet this year’s contestants from 6-8 p.m. SUMMERSCAPE 2023 | 39
6. SMALL TOWNS, MIGHTY (AND MANY) EVENTS Sometimes big fun comes in really small packages. We think these events, all in towns of fewer than 1,400 people and all within easy driving distance of Detroit Lakes, Perham and Wadena are well worth your time. ► Frazee Turkey Days: Four fun-filled days of community dances, a demo derby, games, food and more, July 28-30 in Frazee. ► Vergas Looney Days: A street fair, wiener dog races, food and more fun, August 11-13 in Vergas. ► Ottertail OtterFest: A pancake feed, parade and games, August 12 in Ottertail. ► Menahga Mid Summer Music Fest: Enjoy two weekends of nonstop music in Menahga. Gone Country is June 1-3 and Rock Week is July 20-22. ► Verndale Days Celebration: Vendors, the Raiders Run and a whole lot of games. This year’s event runs July 28-29. 7. 87 YEARS OF WATER CARNIVAL FUN The 87th Northwest Water Carnival will be jam-packed with summer fun during its 10-day run on July 14-23 in Detroit Lakes. More than 65 events are on the schedule, including a mixture of new and old — as well as a few events that are returning from hiatus. From water fights to chili cook-offs to demolition derbies, there’s something for everyone. 8. MS TRAM BIKE RIDE STOPS IN WADENA The Minnesota MS Tram Bike Ride is coming to Wadena on July 25, with riders departing the morning of July 27. 40 | SUMMERSCAPE 2023
This year’s journey starts and ends in Ottertail, but bikers will travel through Wadena, Fergus Falls and Long Prairie during the five-day ride. The event is a fundraiser for MS services and research and has raised millions since it began in 1990. 9. THE ARTS OUTDOORS One of Wadena’s “hidden gems,” Green Island is a 60-acre nature preserve located within the city limits. Though privately owned, it is a place where everyone is welcome to explore its wooded trails and sculptures. While strolling through the “urban woods,” be sure to check out the newly-installed public art structure, “Hidden Water” — made from recycled plastic — and the Poetry Walk. Downtown Detroit Lakes also has a Flower Pot Poetry Walk that runs in conjunction with the Downtown Alive summer beautification project, with large pots of flowers — some of them containing poetry submitted by area writers — dotting the landscape through the city’s downtown business district. 10. FEAST ON SOME CAR CANDY FOR THE EYES Calling all classic car lovers: Detroit Lakes has the summer event for you! On the second Wednesday of every month in June, July, August and September, you can drive your favorite classic cruiser to Detroit Lakes’ West Lake Drive for an evening on the City Beach from 4-8:30 p.m. Don’t have a classic car? That’s okay, just come see the variety on display. More than 200 vehicles have been known to gather along the city’s mile-long beach for these fun monthly events.
