TWO BIG BOATING EVENTS WILL MAKE WAVES AUG. 11 This year’s Antique and Classic Boat Show, set for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11 at a new location on the City Beach, will be expanded this year to include docks and nine slips for boats to be displayed in the water, along with the regular display of trailered boats. To accommodate the event, traffic on West Lake Drive will be blocked off in front of Lakeside Tavern and the Holiday Haven motel, between Lake and Minnesota Avenues. There is no fee to display boats or to attend the boat show, which is open to boats 25 years or older. The event is designed to promote the area’s rich boating history, which includes Ole Lind Boat Works in Detroit Lakes, Lund Boats in New York Mills and two boat manufacturers in Osage. The Quake the Lake powerboat races will also be held that Saturday, from noon until 4 p.m. on Little Detroit Lake, with a half-dozen classes featuring drivers from 12 to 75 years old. The races are free to the public. People can visit the pit area at the Becker County Fairgrounds parking lot, and see the boats close up after the races finish on Saturday. nsurance agents travel to some out of the way places, and that paid off a half-dozen years ago for Jim Matter of Detroit Lakes, when his job took him out to an older log cabin-style cottage on a lake east of town. “It was the family cabin, and they needed to get it insured,” he says. “As I was walking away, I was about four steps away from my car, and the woman said, ‘You wouldn’t be interested in an old wooden boat?’”
The boat -- stored in a sinking boat house right on the shore -- was in good shape when she last saw it 27 years ago, the woman told him. That’s a long time for a boat to sit unused. Matter was about to leave when she mentioned that it was made by, “Ole somebody.” That got his attention. Ole Lind Boat Works in Detroit Lakes made boats from about the mid-1920s to

DISCOVERY from page 7 the mid-1950s. The woman told Matter it was her grandfather’s boat, and it passed to her father when he died and then to her and her brother when their father died. Now they were at the point where, “they were getting rid of everything,” Matter says. The boathouse was one of those oldstyle buildings that sat right on the lakeshore and allowed the boats to be moved in and out on rollers. It had sunk noticeably over the years, and it wasn’t easy to open the door. Matter was able to pry it open just enough to get a cell phone photo. What he saw was enough to inspire him and his brother, Tony, to dig about two feet down in front of the upward swinging lakeside garage door to free it enough to be opened. And there was the boat -- a 14-foot Ole Lind wooden runabout built in Detroit Lakes in 1954. “I said, ‘Oh my gosh, it’s in great shape -- boat ready,’” Matter recalls. “We went in the lake and the cedar sealed right up.” There was no dry-rot, no sign of storage problems at all, he says. The boat was stored out of the water, but always really

close to the water, which was lapping right there, and it provided the perfect storage environment for the cedar strip boat. “By God’s grace, it was like a humidifier in there,” he says. “It was 27 years since it saw the water. I could tell by the (registration) sticker on there -- a true barn find.” Both Matter and his brother are country music fans, and when Tony looked at him and said “Private Malone,” Matter knew what he meant: The David Ball song about the ultimate barn find -- a 1966 Corvette advertised as an “old Chevy.” DISCOVERY to page 10

DISCOVERY from page 8 Then the woman asked: “Do you want the motor, too?” The red Johnson 18 horsepower Sea Horse outboard motor was in good shape, too. The mechanic who checked it out believes it was made in 1956 and estimated it had only had about 40 hours of use. “It was pretty much a brand new motor,” Matter says. Three cheers to the Minnesota Department of Motor Vehicles, which provided the original registration number for the 1954 Ole Lind boat at the request of owner Jim Matter. The L is for Lind, the Ole Lind Boat Works of Detroit Lakes. Nathan Bowe/Tribune PAGE 10 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2018
The 1954 Ole Lind runabout came in two colors -- green or red (Matter’s is green) and he believes the red motor may have been designed to go with the red Ole Lind model. Matter still shakes his head at the chain of events that led him to the piece of Detroit Lakes history. “It was a cute boat, but the main thing was that it was an Ole Lind,” he says. The 14-foot Ole Lind runabout took the Peoples Choice Award (above) last year at the Antique and Classic Boat show in Detroit Lakes. A look at the ribbing on the floor of the cedar-strip Ole Lind runabout. Nathan Bowe/Tribune DISCOVERY from page 10 He and his wife, Theresa, spent a day cleaning up the outside of the boat. “We were told by people who know about antique boats to clean it up and leave everything original intact,” he says. They spent about two days cleaning the inside and putting oils on it “to bring it back to life.” Matter likes to collect historical objects and antiques: “I’m an American Picker through and through,” he says. So it’s only natural that he adorns his vintage boat with things like an orange life vest from the ‘50s, a classic bait bucket from that same era, and older-model fishing poles with classic lures. There were no plugs in the old wooden boats, so a coffee can was always on board for bailing purposes, Matter says.
People get a kick out of his Ole Lind runabout, with its oar locks, simple but elegant wooden bench seats, and rope-and-pulley steering cables that run along the inside. “It’s a cute little boat, built right here,” Matter says. He believes it was number 2,054 built by the Detroit Lakes company. “I was a novice when I started this,” Matter says of his classic boat restoration. “But a lot of experts say it’s a miracle” to find the boat in such good condition. “A lot of them were sunk to protect the wood.” Matter has had the boat out on the lake twice and plans to take it out again this year: “It’s seaworthy,” he says. The boat won the People’s Choice Award last year at the Antique and Classic Boat show in Detroit Lakes.

H
istoric buildings, notable architecture, public art projects, cultural hot spots… the Detroit Lakes community has many unique and interesting features to explore, for visitors and residents alike — and as the sun-soaked days of summer gradually give way to the cool, crisp beauty of autumn, one of the best ways to do that exploring is on foot. The Art & Architecture Walking Tour of Detroit Lakes offers a chance to not only get outside, get some exercise and enjoy the fresh air, but to learn a little bit more about the history and creative culture of the community.
Informational brochures (above) on the Art & Architecture Walking Tour hang next to a large, framed map of the route in the main entrance area at the Historic Holmes Theatre. The theatre is one of 24 sites that walkers can see and learn more about on the self-guided tour. Detroit Lakes artist and sculptor Hans Gilsdorf (opposite at top) created this public art sculpture, “Once Upon a Time,” outside the Detroit Lakes Public Library. The sculpture, which was completed in 2015, is one of the stops on the walking tour. Tribune File Photos
The tour, quietly launched in November 2016, is designed to be family-friendly yet also doable for local workers on their 30-minute lunch breaks. With that in mind, the self-guided tour features two possible paths to take — either a one-mile route, with 13 sights to be seen, or a 2.2-mile route, with 24 possible stops. As its name suggests, the Art & Architecture Walking Tour is about all the interesting art and architecture to be seen around Detroit Lakes. Historic buildings like the Detroit Lakes Public Library and Detroit Lakes Pavilion — both of which are on the National Register of Historic Places — are just a couple of examples of the sights included on the tour, along with several notable murals, sculptures and other creative pieces of public art dotting the landscape, such as the colorfully decorated “Sunny in DL” sunfish sculptures, found at several local businesses and other public locations around town. The longer walk begins at the Historic Holmes Theatre, then turns down State
Street before going down a long stretch of Washington Avenue. It then veers onto West Lake Drive and takes people along the City Beach for a few blocks, before returning back to the downtown area via Summit Avenue. The shorter version skips a lot of the Washington Avenue/Summit Avenue stretches, staying a few blocks away from the City Beach. The best way to take the tour is with an informational brochure in hand. The brochures, which are available inside the main entrance area of the Historic Holmes Theatre, include a detailed route map, marked with all the places of interest, as well as some background info and facts about each site. The brochures can be found as part of a wall display featuring a larger, framed version of the tour map. The walking tour was conceived and developed by Karen Crabtree, the manager of social services and community health for Becker County Energize, and Beth Gilbert, the community outreach director for the Holmes Theatre.
Crabtree said she attended a community forum led by Springboard for the Arts in the fall of 2016, during which she took part in a discussion about how public art and public health can come together in creative ways for the benefit of a community. That got Crabtree thinking, and soon after she reached out to Gilbert for ideas on how public health and the arts could partner in Detroit Lakes. Once grant monies were secured to fund the project, Gilbert spent weeks researching the best sites to highlight along the tour, and came up with the routes. She enlisted the help of a graphic artist to create the maps and brochures, and commissioned some original artwork to include on the tour. Crabtree said she hopes people who take the tour “appreciate all the time and effort that’s gone into creating a beautiful community. I hope they walk away with a positive experience and enjoy what we have to offer in Detroit Lakes.” SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2018 | PAGE 15

he iconic country music festival, WE Fest, will be rockin’ people’s boots off August 1-4 this year, with several big-name headliners like Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, Vince Gill, Josh Turner and many others sure to pull in big crowds.
WE Fest is an annual three-day country music festival that was established in 1983. It’s always held the first weekend in August at the Soo Pass Ranch in Detroit Lakes. Many of the festival-goers stay there all weekend, camping out right on site and taking the opportunity to party, party, party!
PAGE 16 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2018
According to WE Fest Marketing Associate Jillian Klasik, there are a number of new additions to this year’s festival that promise to make WE Fest better than ever before. “We’ve built a bar, the WE Bar, which is the longest bar in the state of Minnesota,” Klasik says. “You can enjoy drinks

tion, called VIP Red, was also created. “Starting this past summer, we selected a new caterer to elevate the quality of our VIP meals to a whole new level,” she adds. “When you taste it, we think you’ll agree. Complimentary soda, water and keg beer are included, along with access to a full cash bar.”
Hundreds of famous country singers and bands have taken the WE Fest stage over the last 30 years or so, including Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Merle Haggard, Faith Hill, Toby Keith, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roger Miller, Tim McGraw, WE FEST to page 18

The grand prize, the Miller Lite Prize Pack, is a $300 gift card and four 3-day VIP 2019 WE Fest tickets, along with one VIP campsite. The two runner up prizes are $200 and $100 gift cards as well as a general admission 3-day campsite pass. Entries for the contest must be submitted by Friday, Aug. 2. There are options for getting around safely while WE Fest is going on. Daily free parking is available at the Becker County Fairgrounds, where a shuttle
bus will be taking festival-goers to and from WE Fest. The shuttles will run continuously about every 20 minutes from noon to 2 a.m. each day, offering unlimited rides to people with bus passes or shuttle wristbands. A festi-cab will also be available, offering rides at $5 per seat. For security, only small bags are allowed into WE Fest, and anyone attending must go through a security check every time they re-enter. There is a fairly short list of things allowed inside: small bags, blankets, small chairs, hats, rain gear, ear plugs, empty plastic water bottles (one sealed water

ould you believe me if I told you a tiny little bee has a huge impact on our economy? A Cornell University study estimates that pollinators contributed $29 billion to farm income in 2010. No only do pollinators play a big part in our economy, but also in the availability of some of America’s favorite foods. Everyday delicious things
like coffee, chocolate, apples, honey and cherries are just a few foods that couldn’t exist in the absence of pollinators. Pollinators are important to humans as well as to the animals that live in their ecosystems. They often pollinate plants that produce foods for bears and birds to eat. So, what is a pollinator? Most people think of insects, but hummingbirds and
PAGE 20 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST 2018
bats also contribute to pollination. In other parts of the world, rodents and even lizards are pollinators. The key is that they are transporting pollen from one plant to another. Plants that can be either female or male often have no way of transporting their own pollen. They will use bright colors and strong smells to draw in insects, birds POLLINATORS to page 22

POLLINATORS from page 20 and bats (and humans, too). Bees have been a buzzword in conservation over the past several years. With the listing of the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee on the endangered species list, more concern has been directed toward pollinators. This is a serious problem that needs some serious solutions. The decline in the Rusty Patched Bumble Bee population is thought to be caused by habitat loss, pesticide exposure, bee viruses, pathogens and pests. There is no one thing that can point to the decline, but it’s likely a factor of all these. POLLINATORS to page 24

One of the best ways you can help pollinators is to create habitat for them. Your backyard can be a haven for beautiful blooms and butterflies. There are many plants that can attract pollinators, but the key is to make sure they’re native. Common Milkweed attracts majestic monarchs to be bewildered by. Bee balm has properties that support bees’ immune systems while
also adding a striking pop of color to your garden. Find out more about which plants pollinators love at www. fws.gov/midwest/endangered/insects/ rpbb/plants.html. The fact is that even the smallest things have a place and function in this world. The importance of even a tiny little bee cannot be overlooked, for its absence would surely be great.
