I must admit-fall is definitely my favorite time of year. Part of the reason is that it signals one of my favorite events of the year-The Annual Damien Tour of Homes. The Home Search Committee has out-done itself with 6 spectacular homes on display. Each home will have a different theme from Enrichment Through Art to Musical Whims. Plus the tour offers a great mix of styles and tastes-lake homes to condominiums-and all of them are amazing! The event is set for Saturday October 2nd from 12:30 to 4pm. All proceeds go to charity: Tickets are $15.00 and are available at Detroit Paint and Glass, La De Da Décor and Design, The Chamber of Commerce and from any Damien member. Don’t miss the fun! bout three years ago, Art Kohler decided he wanted to sell his condo and move into a house. With the help of realtor Jack Chivers, Kohler quickly found his new house and a new owner for his condo. “Within three days, we bought it. We bought his and he bought mine.” Not only did the two homeowners make a switch on homes, they are located just down the road from each other. Now at 701 North Shore Drive on Detroit Lake, the Kohler’s is one of three homes — they also have homes in Las Vegas where Pamela is a dentist and the Bahamas — and is a handmade dream. Every cabinet and drawer in the house is handmade — 139 in all. In the upstairs den area, a window seat boasts the “longest pulls in the state” on drawers under the seat. The wood throughout the house is cherry, even the doors that have been painted. TOP LEFT: Art and Pamela Kohler’s home features cherry wood throughout the house. “It’s hard to find a place to put a picture because of all the wood work,” Art said. “We’re not done decorating by any means.” The light, white house has four bedrooms upstairs, including a spacious master bathroom. Above the attached garage is the den area, or the mother-in-law area, as Art puts it. It has a fold-out couch, television and kitchenette area. “We made an entertainment room of it,” he said. When they moved into the house, he said they had a lot of finishing work to compete. TOP: The path leading up to the cedar shake house is a welcoming one, lined with flowers. In a reading area upstairs, he has his father’s desk. There are unique touches as well, like the beautiful glass light fixture in the shape of an airplane hanging upstairs. “It was a Christmas present from my wife. I’m a flier,” he explained. Art said he still has finishing work plans for the house as well. This fall, possibly before the house tour, he plans to have two decks built off the front of the house toward the lake with a barbecue area in the middle of them.

WARM & welcoming Turning ordinary houses into family-friendly homes

“I learned a lot from my mistakes”

W

hen Mary Newman decided to buy a second home, large enough to fit company in, she chose one with the potential for a big return. The Detroit Lakes woman is already living in a condo on West Lake Drive, but she bought a four-bedroom brick house that she transformed into something a modern family would be attracted to. The house, also located on West Lake Drive, had original bright orange shag carpeting, a closed up small kitchen and old bathrooms that needed a lot of work. “But I could see that it was quite nice if those things were fixed,” she said. So she knocked down a wall to open up the kitchen to the living

and dining rooms, put in all new Asian walnut flooring and new carpeting, modern appliances and new cabinets. “The kitchen was much tighter and much less appealing,” she said. Newman spent quite some time this summer in this house while finishing up the renovations in her condo, part of the reason why she made such apparent transformations. “I cannot stand to live in an ugly place,” she said with a laugh. The spacious open floor plan she created in the new home gives it an open and airy feel that brightens up the place, although she still left a few original parts of the house intact. The stone fireplace, which is noticeable right away from the foyer, takes up a large portion of the living room. It’s one of the things that showed Newman how much potential the old house had. “That was one of the things I thought was charming,” she said of the fireplace. Newman also left the vaulted ceiling and original wood beams that now complement the new open floor plan. As someone with passion for home decorating and design, Newman said although this West Lake Drive home is a place where her 19 grandchildren and nine great-grand children can come and visit, she bought it with the intention of selling it in the future. She transformed it as much as she could to bring it up 30 years into the present.

Newman added all new light fixtures, which she said can make or break a room, renovated the entire kitchen and remodeled both the bathrooms. The layout of the bathrooms is a bit quirky, but what makes one of them unique is the ’70s-style, yellow mustard-colored sink and tub. “A lot of people kinda get a kick out of that old sink,” Newman said. “I don’t think it was worth taking the tub and sink out.” Compared to her current condo where she played more with colors, Newman decided to keep things a little more neutral for this house in case someone is interested in buying it. “If you get too crazy with colors people won’t wanna buy it,” she said, adding that they may not be able to visu-

alize themselves or their furniture in the house. Aside from some of the oriental rugs, which are Newman’s favorite type of rugs, she kept things clean and simple in all of the rooms. After decorating and designing her own homes for years, she’s confident that whether she buys a home to

their previous house, there is still plenty of room for guests and entertaining. Besides the three-bedroom loft house and guesthouse with two king size beds, there is a smaller cottage in the yard for those wanting to stay even closer. “It used to be a dorm with three small rooms. We opened it up to a one-room cottage,” she said. The smaller cottage, decorated in an outdoorsy, cottage-style motif, has a kitchen and table, bed and bathroom. There is also a storage shed on one end. The guesthouse has a two-stall garage on the lower level with an enclosed deck facing the lake, and a one-room sleeping/sitting area upstairs with a bathroom. The Welus bought the land it sits on when they purchased the main house. It is also likely the only house to have a dishwasher in the bathroom. Yup, the bathroom. There are dishes for guests to use, and the Welus had an extra dishwasher they didn’t see the need to get rid of, so it’s now a fixture in the bathroom.

When they built the guesthouse, they built it for more than just guests. “We knew we needed more storage because we don’t have a basement,” Judy said. When they moved to the smaller house — even though they outfitted the house, cottage and guesthouse — Judy said she didn’t have to buy any furniture; she had it all from their previous house. The extra cottages are perfect for when their three grown children and spouses — two in Minneapolis and one in Fargo — and grandson come to visit. The main part of the house is over 100 years old, with the original fireplace — now converted to gas — still the centerpiece. The Welus have added large windows, and the light pours into the home. Judy said the natural light of the house is one of its best features. “The things we have done are cosmetic,” she said of chang-

es to the house since they purchased it seven years ago. “We painted every single thing you could paint.” They enclosed a porch, now Judy’s favorite room in the house, and added six feet to the kitchen, brightening it up with a wall of windows. When it came time to add on to the kitchen and design it, she said she gave the movie “Something’s Gotta Give” with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton to the crew and told them to pay close attention to the kitchen in the movie because that’s what she wanted. “I like the kitchen. I’m so happy with the way it turned out,” she said. With the large kitchen and plenty of floor space, it makes entertaining easy for the couple. “I don’t have a real decorating style. I just tried to keep a cottage-y look.” While the Welus also have a house in Florida, “I’m always glad to come home,” Judy said. “It’s a pretty northern Minnesota look when you drive down this road.” Paul commutes to Fargo each day, where he owns Welu Dental Laboratory. With the home tour being just a month before Halloween, Judy plans to have the house decorated for the occasion — a holiday that happens to be her favorite. And while the main house may be a size down from their previous house, there is still plenty of room for guests and entertaining. It took Twin Cities-based couple years to afford the dream lake home and find the perfect location, but their love for Detroit Lakes goes back just as far. “Even after I left, I came back to Castaway a lot,” he said. It was couples Fred and Sue Harker and Dave and Mary Carlson who were instrumental in getting Perry to Detroit Lakes for Castaway. After Perry was here working, Anne, who was from Los Angeles, flew out to Young Life to work for a month one summer. “It was such a shock to see the green trees and blue lakes,” she said. When Anne flew in, Perry drove to the airport to pick her up, their first meeting. About a year later, they were married. Anne then taught English at Detroit Lakes High School, while Perry continued to work for Young Life. In fact, the Hunter’s contractor on the lake home was Fritz Zirbel, a former student of Anne’s. Perry said the Harker family has played several pivotal roles in his life in Detroit Lakes. Not only did the Harkers bring him to Detroit Lakes for Castaway, it was during the Harker’s daughter’s funeral that the Hunters found their perTOP: The open floor plan allows for nearly every room to be open to the next. fect building lot on the lake. “(The Harkers) continued to have an influence where on we live,” Perry said. Once they could afford it, the Hunters decided to find a summer home in Detroit Lakes. In 2005, when back for the funeral, they found the lot on Lake Melissa and it was just what they wanted. “Being close to the lake, friends and the community was great,” Perry said. Their house has a couple works of art by Kate (Harker) VanDerveer hanging in it. So, the next step was designing the perfect house to go on the perfect lot. Perry spent time designing the timber frame, or post and beam, house. There was no metal used when building the home; the beams are all pegged with wooden pegs. “I always thought it would be fun to do,” Perry said of pegging. Minnesota White Pine sets the tone for the home. The four-bedroom home — one on the main level and three upstairs — is nice sized for when their children and grandchildren come home to visit during the summer. The Hunters’ daughter lives in Seattle, and their son lives in St. Louis Park with his wife and three children. “We host friends as often as possible,” Perry said. A couple of the favorite rooms of the house for the Hunters aren’t even technically rooms. “The deck upstairs is really fun,” Anne said, “and the kitchen island — people hang out there a lot.” The deck upstairs is the roof of the main level screened-in sun porch on the front of the house, facing the lake. Perry said they enjoy sitting up on the deck during the summer, of course, but also over New Year’s is fun. They bring a small fire pit up and toast the New Year by flame. But their favorite place is probably the screened-in porch on the main level, they agree. With no worries about mosquitoes or flies, the Hunters and guests can enjoy a view of the lake and the breeze off the lake, all from the comfort of their couch. “We never thought we’d have a place like this,” Anne said. “We couldn’t afford it but then we were blessed.” The Hunters said they had planned to

buy a home rather than build, but they are happy to have built and get exactly what they wanted. It’s the unique touches that make the home theirs. In the bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs there are little inside windows for character. The loft overlooks the living room and grand, stone fireplace. And picture windows line the lakeside of the home. There’s an office in a nook here, a sitting area there and a “wall of fame” covered with pictures of family at the lake. The bedroom dormers are actually doors opening onto tiny decks for more fresh air and sunshine. The master bedroom includes a walk-through closet and master bathroom, and a patio outside the glass doors, where Anne said she intended to walk out with easy access to a swim, but hasn’t gotten into that habit yet. The open floor plan is both spacious and welcoming. The Hunters are working on a landscaping project late this summer, and as times goes on, they said they plan to make other changes to the house they wish they would have done when it was first built. The lake home isn’t just a lake home though. Although the Hunters live in the Twin Cities, they spend quite a bit of time at the lake home. “We’re at a point now with our work, I can do cell, plane ticket and computer and can live here,” Perry said. Anne’s job with CAbi (Carol Anderson by invitation) requires her to travel a bit more, but the Edina residents still have plenty of time to be at their Lake Melissa home. “We did it for a retreat for ourselves and our kids,” Anne said of building the lake home. ary Newman’s love for home decorating and design turns an ordinary home into a quirky mix of modern and traditional. After she bought her West Lake Drive condo, she put about 15 months into the design plan before moving into the two-bedroom, two-bath, living room and den, 2,000-square-foot home on the lake. “I’m a pretty good decorator,” Newman said proudly. “I really enjoy doing it.” The 75-year-old Detroit Lakes woman said it was time for her to move into a smaller place after living in a large eight-bedroom house that was always filled with company. “I decided it was time for me not to have so much room for company anymore,” she said. But she still made sure she had room for her 19 grandchildren and nine great-grand children.

“I bought another house so I can stick them all in there.” The work she did on her new second floor condo added plenty of “transitional” style touches, as she described them, with an open floor plan, high quality wood throughout, a master bathroom and closet and a welcoming guest bedroom. After running around with paint swatches, pieces of fabric and floor samples, she ended up with a product she really loves. Something unique to her lifestyle, attractive, as well as comfortable. The modern furniture is balanced by some of Newman’s favorite traditional pieces, especially in the living room. The neutral colors complemented with pops of red and lime green bright colors are noticeable throughout the living room and dining area that overlook a large kitchen she designed to her specific taste. “If the colors are wrong, I don’t care about anything else,” Newman said, adding that scale is also crucial. She chose medium-dark cherry wood cabinets that even the fridge is covered with, Asian walnut floors, and she definitely steered clear from oak. “We oaked ourselves to death in North Dakota,” the Jamestown, N.D. native said with a laugh. Plus, for someone who’s “lived as long as I have” you’ll find that light comes and goes and dark also comes and goes, but medium is always in style, Newman said. The kitchen not only opens up to the living and dining rooms, it allows access to the laundry room, from there to the master closet, on to the master bathroom, and then to the master bedroom. Because she’s picky about floor plans, during the remodel she added a door to the outdoor deck from her cozy, well-lit master suite. The bedroom doesn’t only offer convenience, it has an item that “makes people go ‘what the heck?’” Newman said. The cow paintings hung above the bed that she bought from an artist online goes well with the rest of the black and white colors of the bedroom, but it’s something that guests get a kick out of. “I like to do something ridiculous from time to time,” Newman said with a smile. But the rest of the not-so-funny oil paintings, large and small, give her a bit of a nostalgic feeling.

LEFT: An open kitchen is the heart of this home. Newman decided to lower the breakfast bar seating area to fit her specific needs as an aging woman. BELOW: A welcoming guest bedroom is also a mix of traditional and modern.

There is the old school house, farmhouse and barn that remind the homeowner of growing up in North Dakota. A meaningful design in the condo can also be found in the guest bedroom, where Newman’s daughter sewed the bedding and drapes. Newman decided to purchase the condo so she can be close to her friend Opal Rogstad who lives right next door. The two have been close friends since the early ’70s. There are many things about Rogstad that Newman enjoys, but one is pretty obvious. “She’s a wonderful cook and I love to eat,” Newman said. “I don’t like to cook much despite my fancy kitchen.” But it’s also nice to live right in town, close to all the amenities and right on Little Detroit Lake, she added.

LEFT: Pops of color complement neutral furniture in the living room. ABOVE: A humorous cow painting matches the black and white colors of the master bedroom.

pal Rogstad’s home — on the second floor of the West Lake Drive condominiums — offers lots of space and still maintains a cozy atmosphere. It comes with a great lake view of Little Detroit Lake from a balcony that is equipped with natural gas and water for grilling and cooking needs. The kitchen has custom cabinets with granite counter tops, and the centerpiece of the condo is an antique fireplace from the 1800s that came from the Buggy Wheel. “I saw it and fell in love with it and had it installed,” Rogstad said . The condo has floors of Australian cypress and kitchen cabinets custom-made from knotty alder. She has lived there for about a year. The condo has two bedrooms, a family room, a kitchen and a dining area — with about 2,100 square feet in all.
