ow in its 39th year, the Detroit Lakes Damien Home Tour returns this fall to showcase five exceptional local homes. From a cozy little cottage to a glamorous contemporary abode, a history-packed family cabin to a chalet-style lake house, this year’s featured homes are each unique in their own distinct ways — as you’ll see from the “sneak peek” pictures and stories in this Fall Home magazine. A fundraiser for the philanthropic Damien Society, the Damien Home Tour will take place Saturday, October 6 from 12:30-4 p.m. The Damien Society is a group of Detroit Lakes area women devoted to community service and charitable giving. Established in 1950, the society is the driving force behind The Mitten Tree Project, which provides warm winter gear to local schools and nursing homes. The society also supports multiple other local causes and organizations through donations and volunteer efforts. The annual Damien Home Tour, always held the first weekend in October, is the society’s largest fundraiser. Advance tickets for the tour are $20 and may be purchased at the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, Mainstream Boutique, Beautiful Junque Boutique, Central Market or through Damien members. They may also be purchased on the day of the tour for $25, at any of the five featured homes. A map of the homes and their addresses are included with the tickets. The tour is self-guided, with homeowners welcoming ticketholders at any time during tour hours. Participants must be at least 10 years old and be wearing socks (no bare feet or shoes are allowed in the homes). Bathrooms are not open to the public, and taking photographs of the homes is prohibited. Tour sponsors this year include Bergen’s Greenhouses, Brygge Taps & Tavern, Hub 41, Central Floral, Crossroads Garden Center, Jay’s GardenBoutique and R&G Subaru. —Marie Johnson, Magazine Editor SUPPLEMENT TO THE TRIBUNE, SEPTEMBER 30, 2018

Shades of white and decorative ‘lake life’ elements add to the Burdick cottage’s charming beach vibe

L

ight, bright and beachy might be the best way to describe Birch and Jo Burdick’s inviting white cottage on North Melissa Drive. The two bedroom home has an airy, comfortable appeal inside and out, with a nice big front porch, lots of win-

dows, a sunroom and patio, and plenty of soft places to sit and enjoy the views of Lake Melissa, which lies just across the street. From the roadside, a greenery-adorned arbor, brick paver walkway, mature trees, colorful flower gardens and

other decorative landscaping elements provide curb appeal-plus. The home itself further enhances this appeal with its charming look. The front door opens into a seamlessly open-concept kitchen, living and dining area that sets the tone for a consistent design style that flows through every room of the house. Local artwork and “lake life”-themed decor like sailboats, fish and paddles dot the primarily white color palette of the home with hues of blues, browns and grays. It’s all a representation of the lives and styles of the home’s owners. Birch and Jo love the lake life — Birch is a longtime sailor, and the two also go kayaking and spend a lot of time out on the pontoon in the summers. The couple has a long history on Lake Melissa, as a cabin just down the road from their cottage (see the next story in this magazine) has been in Birch’s family for generations. That history goes back a lifetime for Birch, to when he’d spend whole summers at the lake as a kid. For Jo, it goes back about 25 years, she says, to when she and Birch started spending countless days there together as a couple. They still spend a lot of time at that family cabin even now, but the

cottage gives them a place close by to call their very own. When they heard it was for sale last summer, they were quick to snatch it up. They moved in about a year ago, and they’ve been enjoying it ever since. Jo says the extra space that the cottage provides has already come in handy around the holidays and for other big family get-togethers. “We enjoy having the two places for people to spread out and stay in,” she says. “That has been so much fun.”

Built in 2004, the cottage features a large lot, a two-car garage, and a garden shed in the back. The Burdicks have added some fencing around the backyard, done some additional landscaping, and decorated it to suit their style. “It’s been really fun to be able to just put my own stamp on it and make it ours,” says Jo. “I wanted to give it a beachy feel... but keep it lake-like — no seahorses or starfish, that sort of thing. She wanted this space to be different. Though they keep pretty busy with work — Jo is in administration at Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota and Birch is the Cass County State’s Attorney — they visit the cottage every weekend they can, all

year long. It’s hard to stay away. “I tell people my husband has another woman in her life, and she’s more important than I am, and her name is Melissa,” Jo jokes. “He grew up coming to the lake (Lake Melissa) his whole life. As a boy, he’d come here and take his shoes off at the start of summer vacation and they wouldn’t go back on until he left again for school.” 

If these walls could talk

The old Birch family cabin harbors many happy memories and tributes to the past STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIE JOHNSON

PAGE 14 | FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2018

The interior of the cabin still looks much the same as it did when it was originally built, and even a lot of the furnishings are from the 1930s.

T

here’s a lot of history in the old Birch family cabin. Built in 1929 on the north shore of Lake Melissa, it’s become a landmark to neighbors and boaters because of its bright seafoam green color — a trait its carried for generations. The cabin’s original matriarch, Magdalena Birch, chose that distinctive exterior color more than 80 years ago, and her kids and grandkids haven’t had the heart to change it. They haven’t wanted to change much inside, either. From the white pine that covers the walls and ceilings of the cabin to the wicker chairs in the front entryway, many of the original design elements and furnishings from the early 1930s are still intact and in regular use. While the cabin’s been well cared for and any needed updates have always been done — new windows, for example — there are reflections of the past in every room. From family heirlooms to framed black-and-white photos, from keepsakes collected during family travels to a yellowed growth chart still hanging on the old kids’ bedroom door frame, the cabin is one big celebration of memories. “There are a few things I could do here (design-wise), but I don’t do anything major, because it’s the family cottage,” says Jo Burdick while looking around the

cabin’s sun-soaked living room. “It’s got so much history.” Jo and her husband, Birch, are now among the family heirs of the cabin who still regularly use it. And while Jo admits its old-fashioned style is something she’s thought about updating, the nostalgia of the place — and its historical significance within the family — supersedes any desire to change things. Originally built by Birch’s grandparents, Albert and Magdalena Birch (whom Birch gets his name from), the cabin was designed with lots of windows to provide extensive lake views from both the main living area and the kitchen — Magdalena -Jo Burdick insisted on having good views from the kitchen, Jo says, so there’s a line of windows where upper cupboards would normally be. Old photos of Albert and Magdalena at the cabin show them smiling in their swimsuits, enjoying the lake life with friends and family. Eventually, the cabin was passed down to Birch’s mother, Jocelyn, and father, Quentin Burdick. They built a two bedroom, one bath bunkhouse next to the main cabin in 1960 to accommodate their expanding family. The Burdicks would spend their summers swimming, sailing, water skiing, golfing, playing croquet and just gener-

ally recreating around Lake Melissa. Like many seasonal lake cabin owners in the area, Jo says, Quentin and Jocelyn had live-in nannies stay with them for the summers to help care for their children. These nannies came to be affectionately known among area families as the “summer girls,” and Jo says a lot of cabins had a special “summer girls room” — a bedroom reserved just for the nannies. The old “summer girls room” at the Birch family cabin is one of the few things that has changed with time — today, that former bedroom area serves as a pantry and half bath. Aside from the small remodeling project needed to accomplish that, no major work has been done on the cabin in its nearly 9 decades of existence. “My mother-in-law spent her whole life here, every single summer, ” reflects Jo. “It was very much, come down when school was out and close up Labor Day weekend.” When they weren’t enjoying their PAGE 16 | FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2018

summers in Detroit Lakes, Quentin and Jocelyn and their kids lived in Fargo, where the couple was active in politics. Quentin was a U.S. Senator for 32 years, from 1960 up until his death in 1992. He did a fair amount of traveling during his years on the Senate, acquiring a number of gifts, keepsake items and souvenirs along the way — many of which are now mixed into the decor at the family cabin. Native American paintings and other authentic artifacts that had been presented to Quentin, for example, now grace the cabin’s walls. And two stools that still sit in front of the stone fireplace are from the Philippines. When Quentin died, he left an open seat on the Senate that Jocelyn was appointed by the governor to fill, at least temporarily. This made her the first woman from North Dakota to hold the office of U.S. Senator. Surely, if the walls of this family’s cabin could talk, there would be much to say. 

here’s purple furniture, zebra-striped carpet and a black, bedazzled knight in the corner. No, it’s not Scooby Doo’s hangout, rather it’s a somewhat sixties and seventies-inspired modern home nestled on a 1.5-acre lot in the development between Sucker Creek and Detroit Lake. “I did all the decorating,” says homeowner Angie Horner, pointing out a closet-turned-phone booth and large, purple glass doors that close off the master bedroom from the rest of the

house. This is the third home Angie and her husband Matt have designed and built in the development, and it seems to be the charm. Angie says “it’s perfect” after roughly a year of planning and a year of building. “Everything I come up with, Matt can figure out how to do,” she says, adding, “I’m lucky because I come up with crazy, weird things, and I know that he can do it.” She’s had the freedom to hand off

a fan of what she comes up with, whether it’s because the style is too strange for his taste or it’s a difficult project. She recalls furnishing the dining room in their open-floor main level and ordering “mad hatter” chairs: “It’s funny because Matt usually lets me do whatever I want and doesn’t say too much. Well, these two big chairs came, and I’ll never forget it. He brought in these two big boxes, and he set them down and started to unload them. He looks at them and goes, ‘These are not staying! This is where I draw the line!’ Well, that was five years ago.” Then there are the ideas that didn’t become a reality with ease, like the wavy, textured wall in their living room and the lacquer kitchen cabinets, which she says were her dad’s specialty. “I don’t like wood,” says Angie, explaining why she decided on such a rare material for TOP〉The modern kitchen features an island and lacquer cabinets, a rare find. cabinets. “We took a huge risk. My dad was like, ‘I’ve never seen these before. I don’t know what they’re going to look like,’ and we’re like, ‘Let’s do it!’” If Angie can dream it, Matt can do it. The two make quite a designing and building duo, whether it’s feathers and beads to compliment the bright furniture or a sunken tub in the master bathroom, the four-bedroom, three-bathroom home has something artsy and eye-catching in every room. Zebra-striped carpet covers the stairs that lead up to the kids’ space, complete with gymnastics equipment and a balcony overlooking the main floor. Angie and Matt’s two children, Jerzie, 13, and Jaze, 8, have their bedrooms on the second floor, as well. Jaze’s room is race car-themed, and Jerzie’s is the only room in the house that isn’t decorated in Angie’s style. “She’s now a teenager, so we just remodeled it and did it the way she liked,” says Angie, recalling the remodel. “I was like, ‘You don’t want feather and beads and sequins?’ It was a big deal. That was tough, but it’s exactly her. It’s how she wanted it.” Downstairs, there’s a guest room that the Horners have affectionately dubbed “Molly’s Room” after their long-time babysitter. And then there are the bold, purple glass doors which sit on the other side of the house, sectioning off the master bedroom, which features a spacious sleeping area, walk-through bathroom and exercise/ make-up room. The bathroom walls are glass, making it feel very open. It features a double-sink, glass shower and, of course, a sunken tub, which Angie says their plumber was not pleased about — it was a big project, like many of Angie’s ideas. In the end, though, it has all been worth it for Angie. Every feature in the home, whether it’s big and bold or as small as a sequin, comes together to create a space that she loves. “This is my dream home,” she says, adding that knowing she and her husband (and family) did a majority of the work really makes them take pride in it. “It was a lot of work, and I can’t believe we’re done.” 

A showcase of curiosities The Gabriels’ chalet-style home is spacious, inviting, and full of collectibles STORY AND PHOTOS BY VICKI GERDES

he first thing most visitors to Jan and Dennis Gabriel’s South Shore Drive home notice is the two statuesque, larger-than-life heron statues that stand vigil in the midst of the small garden outside the home’s main entryway. “People are always commenting on them,” says Jan Gabriel as she walks through the front door. Inside, the chalet-style home gives an impression of spacious comfort, with four bedrooms — including a loft on the upper level — four baths and a large living room, next to a small kitchen with granite countertops, customized cabinetry

and a wine fridge. “We redid all the cabinets in the kitchen,” says Jan, noting that they have called this home theirs for 16 years now. “We added the master bedroom side about five years ago.” The living room fireplace was converted several years ago from wood burning to natural gas, which Jan says they can now turn on (and off) by flipping a switch rather than trying to start a fire. Out on the back deck, which overlooks a small sand beach and dock area, there is a large, customized circular table with a top made of mosaic tile, and a small fire pit in

The back side of the home also contains some beautiful landscaping, with much of it lying underneath a large crabapple tree. Hydrangeas, hostas and other shade-loving plants can be found here. Out on their lakeshore property’s small sand beach, an antique lifeguard chair sits: “I used to be a lifeguard,” Jan explains with a smile of the conversation piece. Over on the other side of the backyard, another small fire pit sits,

surrounded by comfortable patio-style furniture. Back inside, a small open staircase leads to the home’s upper level, where besides the loft bedroom — which doubles as a study when not in use by guests — there can be found a series of glass-encased cabinets filled with collectible cars, tractors, motorcycles and more. Still more of these cabinets line the wall leading into the loft, and on either side of the cabinets sit two small kids’ pedal cars.

“That one’s called a ‘Kid-illac,’” Jan says, pointing to a small pink pedal car that does, indeed, resemble a full-sized Cadillac convertible. The other pedal car is decorated to resemble a Ford racing pace car. Another cabinet tucked into a corner of the main living area contains miniature cars made of stainless steel and pewter. “There are so many different kinds (of miniature vehicles)... you name it, he’s got it!” Jan says of her husband’s

collection. Also to be found on the property is a large “extra” garage with guest quarters on the upper level, which is where Jan says Dennis spends much of his spare time. “He restores old motor vehicles as a hobby,” she explains. The home contains a few other interesting curiosities, as well, such as a large “stained glass” window that was actually made by an artist who works with translucent film in different colors, which when cut into shapes and placed over a sheet of glass, then surrounded by black “leading,” actually looks like it’s made of real stained glass.

The stained glass panel on the front door, however, is real: “It came that way,” Jan says. There are also three walls around the house that were decorated using an art form known as faux painting, with the intent of making them resemble Tuscan-style walls with exposed brick. Another interesting piece of furniture can be found in one of the bathrooms, where Jan took an antique cherrywood dining room serving table and converted it into a vanity, complete with a ceramic sink in the middle. “I think it turned out really well,” she says. 

Cozy in a cottage Shipley house on Floyd Lake makes every inch count STORY AND PHOTOS BY NATHAN BOWE

PAGE 36 | FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2018

S

ometimes it’s not how much space you have, it’s what you do with it. Carol and Kevin Shipley’s 900-square-foot cottage on Paradise Point, Big Floyd Lake, is a marvel of efficiency: A steep “Jefferson staircase” with alternating treads made of hickory leads to a bedroom loft. Double-hung windows helped turn a summer-only porch into a year-round space. High-hung cabinets allow a view of the lake while working in the “chef’s kitchen.” A built-in dining room bench has cupboards on each end, and a top that lifts in the middle to create a long storage chest.

It was rustic, but we always called it the cottage, so I wanted it to look like a cottage.” - Carol Shipley, on designing the rebuilt family cabin The house is full of tucked-away storage spaces and clever use of small rooms, like the “smallest utility room ever,” as Carol calls it, that made a delivery crew do a double-take when they brought in the stackable washer and dryer. They needn’t have worried: everything had been pre-measured and they fit just fine. Lake cabins are where families gather, and that mean good times for children — swimming, fishing, cards, board games, corn on the cob, fruit salad and burgers on the grill. Those kids grow up, and those good cabin memories become part of their DNA. Carol, for sure, never lost them. They were a big part of the reason that she and Kevin took the giant step of tearing down the original cabin — bought by her parents in 1958 — and building a new cozy cottage in the old cabin’s footprint three years ago. Love of family and respect for the past shows up in just about every room of the new cottage.

TOP〉Carol and Kevin Shipley, with their faithful pooch, in front of the stone fireplace in the living room of their recently rebuilt lake cottage. ABOVE〉The Shipley cottage as seen from the roadway. It sits on a 51-foot lot and was built on the footprint of the original cabin.

FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2018 | PAGE 37

A tall rock chimney (built by David Heggestuen of Cormorant) and gas fireplace embrace a corner of the living room. The rocks are in memory of the rock retaining wall along the beach that had to be replaced with rip-rap a number of years ago, Carol says. “My folks bought this little cottage when I was 2 years old,” she says. “It had electricity but no running water.” She and her mom traveled all over with her dad, who was an auditor for the Department of Agriculture. But that changed when she was old enough for school. “When I started kindergarten, we moved out here” to Big Floyd Lake, she says. They later moved into town, but they always kept the cabin. “It was rustic, but we always called it the cottage, so I wanted it to look like a cottage,” she says. The old piano her mom used to play, and Carol played, too, after she had lessons, is back in the cottage now, where it commands a wall and has a view of the lake. Wall decorations from her childhood — floating musical notes fastened above the piano — are back, too. There was a built-in bench along a wall in the old cottage, and the new built-in bench in the dining room pays homage to the original. The hickory on the ceiling and in the unique staircase was inspired by the hickory floors of a previous house owned by the Shipleys on Floyd Lake. JCS Cabinetry and Design of Audubon did all the cabinetry work on the cottage, including the Jefferson staircase, Carol says. The wicker furniture in the bedroom was purchased from a former neighbor, Lynn Akre, who moved to Arizona: “She was thrilled that some of her furniture was still on Paradise Point,” says Carol.

The black and white bathroom is a shout-out to the bathroom in a home the couple once owned on Washington Avenue near Holy Rosary Church. On the lakeside porch is a round metal table bought by her parents in the 1970s, a favorite in the old screened-in porch. The kitchen, with granite countertops and new appliances and cabinets, is on the side of the cottage furthest from the lake. But the cook can still see the water, thanks to high cabinets on that side. The cottage is warmed and enhanced by porcelain floor tiles, designed to look like hardwood. Carol designed the cottage with the help of architect Tony Stoll of BHH Partners in Perham, whom she says “made a few changes and a lot of suggestions.”

TOP〉The kitchen is designed to make every inch count while still leaving a view of the lake. ABOVE〉A view from the dock of the Shipley cottage on big Floyd Lake. RIGHT〉This pillow sums up how Carol and Kevin Shipley feel about their cozy cottage on Paradise Point.

The main contractor was Mark Hoban Construction of Ogema, and Carol says she appreciates his persistence in advocating for a year-round solution to what had been planned as a summer porch. The first night in the new cottage, Carol was filled with self-doubt: “I kept thinking, ‘What did I do? The cabin is gone,’” she recalls. PAGE 42 | FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2018

Then she woke up the next morning and could see the lake without getting out of bed, and she bathed in a nice tiled shower, not a small one with a metal base, and she actually had some counter space in the kitchen, and she thought: “Okay, maybe this isn’t so bad.” The old cabin that hadn’t even had a foundation was now a new cottage on

solid footing, with in-floor heat, even in the porch. She was a little worried at first about how her family would feel about all the changes, but the house passed the test when a nephew came in, saw the new porch painted in the familiar blue-grey colors of the old cabin, and said happily, “Now I know I’m in the cottage.” 

How to make an eye-catching gallery wall G allery walls can make a statement in the living room, add finesse to an entryway or showcase special items along a staircase. One need only do a quick internet search or browse through lifestyle magazines to see examples of gallery walls for inspiration. Anyone with a little determination can design a gallery wall. Here are some tips to get started. ► Find your muse. The first step to creating a gallery wall is to choose a theme. If floral prints are your thing or you love abstract art, build your gallery around these elements. You can even use color or frame style as the coordinating factor. ► Take your time. Some people rush into creating gallery walls, and that can be a mistake. Spend time picking out pieces and trying different combinations before you take out the hammer and hardware. The mix should be captivating and look like it was a curated collection. Some pieces can be high-end, while others may be picked up at flea markets or even be your own artwork or photography. ► Experiment with dimensions and levels. Gallery walls need not be restricted to flat photos on a wall. Texture and depth can be used in wall designs. Intersperse shelving, sconces, wooden letters, clocks, and more to make the gallery more eclectic. Feel free to build the gallery around items that are in the house, such as windows or televisions. This can help electronics blend into the design. ► Establish your focal point. Pottery Barn suggests making the center of

the display at eye level, roughly 66 inches off the ground. Then build the gallery out from around that focal point. There are many patterns that can be built into the gallery, from spiral to centered to “reflection” designs. ► Create a template. Lay the gallery design on the floor and cut newspapers or other paper to the size of each piece. Use masking tape

to position these guides on the wall, trying a few arrangements until you are happy with the finished product. Then replace the paper with the artwork. ► Hang items with precision. Don’t skimp on technique. Use a ruler, level and the right tools. This ensures pieces are straight and in line with others. FALL HOME MAGAZINE 2018 | PAGE 43

Corral entryway clutter T he entryway to a home is the first thing guests see when visiting. It also can be the first place residents drop their belongings after long days at school or work. As a result, entryways can quickly be consumed by clutter. Taming such messes takes a mixture of ingenuity and planning. Homeowners hoping to clear their entryways of clutter must first decide what they want to get out of the space. Will it simply be a decorative spot with photos and other home decor on display? Or is functionality the primary goal? Once that decision has been made, take inventory of which items, such as shoes, keys, umbrellas or coats, need to be in the area, which don’t (i.e., old

mail). To make things more organized, rearrange the former while removing the latter. Next it is time to assess storage needs and what’s already available. User-friendly storage items may need to be purchased to make the room as functional as possible. The following ideas also can help bring order to the space. ► Create a command center. Create a central location where items are neat, orderly and within reach. Use a bulletin board, dry-erase calendar or something that can house schedules and important notices. Hooks can hold keys, chargers and more. ► Keep it covered. Covered bins can serve as a seating area and also a place to store shoes, hats and scarves.

► Create cabinet space. Store items in cabinets so they are organized but out of sight. This way belongings are not just left on an entryway table. ► Create another drop zone. If the entryway is too small to serve its purpose, outfit another room or area that also can do the job. This can be a laundry room or mudroom area. Install shelves, a bench, cabinets and hooks. Just be sure this space is close enough to the entryway to make it useful. ► Go vertical. An easy way to keep things neater is to remove items from the floor and embrace vertical storage. Shoe racks, hooks for purses and a cabinet for coats may do the trick.
