ow celebrating its 40th year, the Detroit Lakes Damien Home Tour returns this fall to showcase five exceptional local homes. From a completely remodeled Craftsman Nantucket lake house to a chic “mountain modern” new build in the woods, this year’s featured homes are all show-worthy in their own unique ways — as you’ll see from the “sneak peek” pictures and stories in this Fall Home magazine. A fundraiser for the philanthropic Damien Society, the Damien Home Tour will take place Saturday, October 5 from 12:30-4 p.m. The Damien Society is a group of Detroit Lakes area women devoted to community service and charitable giving. Established in 1950, the society is the driving force behind The Mitten Tree Project, which provides warm winter gear to local schools and nursing homes. The society also supports multiple other local causes and organizations through donations and volunteer efforts. The annual Damien Home Tour, always held the first weekend in October, is the society’s largest fundraiser. Advance tickets for the tour are $20 and may be purchased at the Detroit Lakes Regional Chamber of Commerce, Central Market, Mainstream Boutique, Beautiful Junque or through Damien members. They may also be purchased on the day of the tour for $25, at any of the five featured homes. A map of the homes and their addresses are included with the tickets. The tour is self-guided, with members of the Damien Society welcoming ticketholders at any time during tour hours. Participants must be at least 10 years old and be wearing socks (no bare feet or shoes are allowed in the homes). Bathrooms are not open to the public, and taking photographs of the homes is prohibited. Tour sponsors this year include Bergen’s Greenhouses, Zorbaz, KDLM Radio, TLC Cleaning, Brygge Taps and Tastes, Design2Sell, and R&G Subaru.

home like this, in a town like Detroit Lakes, is bound to draw some attention. “Everybody knew when this house was going up, because it stands out so much,” says Eric Soyring, who owns the newly built Timber Creek home with his wife, Tami. They describe its style as “Mountain Modern,” and say it’s based on a type of design that’s become popular in the Pacific Northwest. The style usually features tall ceilings, sweeping views, an uncluttered design with clean lines and sharp edges, and a focus on simplicity, energy efficiency, and textures over color. The Soyrings worked with an architect in Portland, Oregon, to design the home, reworking some of the original plans to better fit in with Minnesota’s Northwoods feel and also function in its colder climate.
I love the textures and the layers, the wall coverings and the tiles. -Tami Soyring

“We love the Pacific Northwest vibe,” Eric says, “but we made some regional modifications (to meet Minnesota’s snow load requirements, for example).” The Detroit Lakes couple, who own the interior design and custom metal fabrication company Straightline Design, moved into the home in December, and they’re loving everything about it. It’s not the first modern style house that the Soyrings have built together, and they say it won’t be their last. “We really, really enjoy the process of building,” Eric says. “We always knew we wanted to build again,” adds Tami. “And we’ll probably build again after this.” They decided to make the move after falling in love with the wooded, elevated lot they found for sale in the Timber Creek development. Tami says their last home was more of a “clean modern” style: “This one is warmer and has more textures.” It’s more of an “organic modern,” explains Eric, using a phrase that’s trending in the design world right now. The term describes modern homes that have earthier, more balanced feel, mixing crisp lines and minimalism with neutral tones and natural decor elements.

It’s the first room guests see as they walk in the main entryway. Connected through an open concept layout with both the kitchen and dining room, it boasts views of the backyard countryside and is only one door away from the back patio and outdoor kitchen.
“It used to be a small group of people who liked modern design, but that group’s growing now,” thanks in large part to the organic modern movement, Eric says. They’ve had a lot of compliments on the house. They laugh at the recollection that this home was supposed to be their “downsizer.” That plan obviously changed along the way. The Soyring home is beyond spacious, with four bedrooms, five bathrooms, a heated indoor pool, fitness and rec room, and back patio with a full outdoor kitchen — and that’s all in addition to the focal point of the house, the large, openconcept living room, dining room and indoor kitchen. “We’d pull up (to the home as it was being built) over the summer and think, ‘What have we done?’” Tami laughs. “It’s kind of funny because we were going to downsize. But it’s nice when the kids are here, and the grandbaby. It’s well worth the cleaning.” The Soyrings have a grown daughter with one child of her own, and a son who’s in high school and still lives with them. They’ve been married for 23 years. Tami grew up in West Fargo, and Eric grew up in White Earth. They’ve been in business together for the past 10 or 12 years, starting very small, with the creation of some wall hangings they sold on eBay, and eventually growing into more kinds of PAGE 10 | Fall Home

custom design work. Eric, who has a background in machining, specializes in the design, fabrication and installation of architectural metals for the high-end residential market — things like staircases, railings and fireplaces. Tami’s focus is on interior design and decor. “A lot of our projects cross paths,” Eric says of their business partnership, and even when they’re working on separate projects, they still utilize each other’s talents as much as possible. They work from home, out of an office located at the front of the house. For this house, Eric did all the custom metalwork himself, and Tami did all the interior design. They contracted out the construction work to a business owned by Eric’s cousins, Soyring Construction, and visited the site every week to check on the progress. They say things went smoothly overall, with no major hiccups along the way. Of course, “there’s always things that come up,” Eric says, “and certainly with this design, which is just different than the norm… that’s trickier around here.” But, custom work “happens to be what we do,” he adds, and the couple found that, by giving clear directions to the contractors — and by having a willingness to buy some
materials and furnishings from out of the area (because they weren’t available in Minnesota) — they were able to get the job done without too much trouble. They’re more than happy with the end result. They both love the clean lines of the house, and its many unique features that give it a personal touch. “I love the textures and the layers, the wall coverings and the tiles…,” says Tami. “I’m just all about the layers. But my most favorite feature is the indoor pool. That’s my baby.” She says she uses the pool at least once or twice a day herself, and she also loves that it’s a draw for family and other company. For Eric, a favorite feature of the house is the outdoor kitchen, which has a grill and pizza oven that have already seen a lot of use. “It’s really fun to sit out there,” he says. A musician who used to tour with bands, Eric also appreciates the home’s built-in audio visual system. There are speakers throughout the house, including some surprising places like inside the couple’s two-person steam shower in the master bathroom. “I really enjoy that,” he says. They also love their built-in Jenn-Air coffeemaker, and the granite countertops in the kitchen, with waterfall edges that flow all the way to the floor. “We’re design enthusiasts, and so we love this,” they say of designing homes together. “Even if we didn’t do it for a business, it’d be really fun for us, and we’d still do it.”

Success storyy STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIE JOHNSON
The Melands faced a lot of unexpected plot twists during their remodeling project, but still got the happy ending they hoped for
ick and Maureen Meland are a perfect team when it comes to remodeling and designing houses, and their recently redone lake home on East Shore Drive is a perfect example of that. When the Melands bought the property in 2012, it looked nothing like it does today, a beautifully snug and sturdy Craftsman Nantucket home surrounded by handsome gardens and landscaping. Built in the late 1960s, the home was in foreclosure and needed a lot of work. The windows, doors, roof, siding, wiring, plumbing and some of the flooring needed to be updated or altogether replaced. Plus, the layout was messy, and there weren’t enough outdoor living spaces for the Melands’ taste. Still, they saw potential in the place. They had a vision for it, and they trusted their ability to turn that vision into reality. “The price was right, and we thought we could make something out of it,” says Maureen. “We’ve done it before.” Rick has a degree in architecture and draws and builds houses for a living, and Maureen has a natural gift for design. Together, the two built their permanent residence in Northwood, North Dakota, and have also built or remodeled homes for their three grown children. Still, they say their lake home project wasn’t quite like the others. Just about any problem that could have come up during the remodeling process, did. Frozen and busted pipes, water running out of the ceiling, a carpenter ant infestation, PAGE 12 | Fall Home

bats, rotted walls, sagging ceilings that needed to be jacked up… “We started gutting, and it only got worse,” says Maureen. Yet despite the challenges, “I don’t know that we ever hated coming. It was kind of fun.”
The price was right, and we thought we could make something out of it. -Maureen Meland, on why they bought the property The Melands did most of the work themselves, with the occasional help of their kids, friends and some hired contractors. The couple came to town on weekends over the course of five or six years to work on the remodel, bit by bit. They came up with a whole new look and layout for the house, reworking spaces to improve functionality and flow, and replacing everything that needed replacing. They also added bedrooms, a bathroom, and a heated porch and large patio and deck spaces for outdoor living. They kept some of the home’s original wood flooring on the main level; otherwise, pretty much everything in and outside of the house is new. Its square footage went from about 2,300 before the Melands bought it, to 3,000 now.

The end result, they say, is exactly what they wanted. “I wanted it light and airy, and a little bit nautical because of the lake,” says Maureen. “A little bit Pottery Barn.” She loves all the windows around the house, and the fireplace in the living room. “Fireplaces are the heart of the home,” she says, adding that things like lighting and shiny fixtures and decorations are the “jewelry.” “I love the house,” says Rick. “It’s my place to get away and relax and destress.” Rick enjoys his continued projects around the house, and Maureen loves to get out and garden. The couple still resides in Northome full-time, but they plan to make this their retirement home. For now, they’re here on weekends, holidays and more often in the summers. It’s become a family gathering place, Maureen says, with their kids, their kids’ spouses, and their nine grandchildren getting together at the lake to play on the water, relax in the hot tub, jump on the trampoline, and just all be together. “It’s been good,” says Maureen with a smile. When it’s just the two of them, Rick and Maureen like to go to jazz shows at The Lodge, and they frequent the Richwood Winery. They dine out at local restaurants, and ski together at Detroit Mountain. They had their first ski outing together there in 1978, and now, they can take their grandkids there. “There’s always something to do here,” says Maureen. “That’s why we chose this place.” Though they were familiar with Detroit Lakes for decades, it was only in recent years that the couple got more serious about putting down retirement roots here, after renting a vacation home on Detroit Lake. That home was just a few doors down from what is now their very own property — that’s how they discovered it. “We were driving by one day and saw the (For Sale) sign as we were leaving,” says Maureen. “It was a God thing.”
I love the house. It’s my place to get away and relax and destress. -Rick Meland, on the property today

City house, country house Bill and Velva Strand get the best of both worlds in this prime property on a private offshoot of North Shore Drive STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIE JOHNSON

ears ago, Bill and Velva Strand would cruise around North Shore Drive, admiring all the nice lake homes, and Bill would tell his wife, “Someday I want to live here.” In 2011, his wish came true.
The Strands heard about a home for sale on the little deadend road that shoots off of North Shore Drive across from the high school football field, and they decided to go take a look. They found that the home was dated, but it had good bones, and they absolutely loved the location. They couldn’t pass it up. “We had a vision for it,” Bill says. “It really was all about location. It really didn’t even matter what the place looked like, but it was so well-built...we said, ‘We’re going to remodel this thing (instead of tear it down).’” “Everything in this location is within walking distance, yet we have quite a bit of privacy here,” Velva adds. Since they’re right in town, they can walk to the City Park and Pavilion, the restaurants along West Lake Drive, and the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center. They can hear the crowds at Laker football games and boat parties at the Detroit Lake sandbar — celebrations that they enjoy feeling a part of, even when they’re just relaxing at home. Yet they get very little traffic on their road, and most of the time things are quiet at their house, as if they’re at a secluded country getaway. They get sun exposure morning to evening, and don’t get much wind off the lake, they say: the location is ideal. The home itself is ideal for them, too, but it took time and

effort to make it that way. The Strands believe the house was originally built in the 1960s by the owner of the old Nelson Drug Store, and after that the former owners of Red Willow purchased the home. They lived there for many years before the Strands acquired it. The Strands started remodeling right away — a lengthy process that’s still not totally complete, though all the major work has been done for a couple years now. A little bit at a time, with Bill acting as the general contractor, the Strands tackled one project after the next. They completely redid the kitchen, removing a central dividing wall between the kitchen and living room to open things up and provide better lake views. They put in a new kitchen island, custom cabinets, ceramic floors, windows, appliances, lighting and more. In the living room, they replaced a picture window with sliding doors, which provide easy access to a new outdoor living space with a built-in fireplace, TV, and comfortable places to sit and eat or just relax. “I guess you could call it a three-season room,” says Velva. “We wanted it to be an expansion of the house, so whenever we have company, we just slide the sliding doors open and everybody goes in and out. In spring, summer and fall, our dining room table is out there; in winter, we bring it inside. It’s a place for family to hang out.” In addition, the Strands added on to the home to create a large master suite, and put a bay window in another bedroom. They redid a vintage 1970s bathroom, built a larger, two-car garage, opened up the main entryway, and created a sizable
laundry room. The “least changed room” in the house, they say, is a den off the living room that still has its original hardwood floors and knotty pine walls. It offers great views of the lake and functions as a second four-season sitting area. The intent of the remodel, the Strands say, was to make the home feel like their own, and also make it a fun gathering place for friends and family. It’s their year-round retirement home, but also functions as a place for people to get together and recreate. “We wanted our house to be really comfortable,” says Velva. “I didn’t want people to come in here and think they couldn’t sit down. There’s a big kitchen that everybody can cook in… When family’s here, it’s wonderful.” Bill and Velva have five grown children between the two of them, and those kids and their families are spread out all over the U.S. They come up every summer to visit, for about a week or so at a time. Bill also has relatives in Fargo who visit frequently. When the kids and grandkids are over, the Strands take them boating, tubing and water skiing. Bill also loves to fish, and they get a lot of use out of the fire pit on the beach. Since moving in, the Strands have held a family reunion at their home, a beach party, and even a wedding reception. For events like that, there’s another feature of their property that comes in quite handy — the guest house. Cute as a button, the Strands say they’re “almost as proud of that” as they are the main home. The guest house was badly in need of repairs when the

Strands purchased the property: “It was so bad you didn’t even want to go in the place,” says Velva. But they fixed it up nicely, expanding the space by adding a pitched roof and loft area. There’s also a sitting room, downstairs bedroom, bathroom, and even a galley kitchen, “so it is nice for company,” she says. “Everybody that goes in there thinks it’s so cool.” On their adjoining property across the street from the guest
house are two other buildings the Strands added — a newly constructed detached garage, and a little “she-shed” that Velva uses for her gardening. There are extensive gardens all around the Strands’ property, completely designed and maintained by the couple. Velva, who works at Bergen’s Greenhouses, says gardening is her “passion,” and it shows around her home, where lush flowers, trees and shrubs abound.

‘An eclectic home of our passions’ Paul and Beth Pridday’s lake property is a true reflection of who they are STORY AND PHOTOS BY MARIE JOHNSON
High ceilings and large windows make this room — which the Priddays call their “lake room” — feel big and bright.

aul and Beth Pridday’s property on Long Lake paints a colorful and comprehensive picture of their unique loves and shared lives. The couple purchased the 3,400-square-foot home and its 2.5 acres just two years ago, and have been turning the place into one that really looks and feels like their own. Almost every wall in the house, for example, is adorned with photos or paintings of basset hounds, Beth’s favorite kind of dog. Photos and memorabilia from the couple’s many travels — from around the U.S. and abroad — also hang from walls or grace surfaces throughout the home. There are also decorative representations of Paul’s passion for music, like shelves lined with his record collection, as well as of the couple’s appreciation for lake life, such as a large picture of Long Lake — taken by Beth herself — that now hangs over the head of their bed. In addition, the Priddays have incorporated a built-in wine and coffee bar into their kitchen, to suit their tastes. And Beth, who says she’s “just not a white wall kind of person,” has painted most of the house, in various lively colors. The overall effect, as Beth describes it, is “just kind of an eclectic home of our passions. It’s not fancy, but… it’s us.” Beth says she and Paul fell in love with the house the moment they first walked in, thanks to its elevated main level
and large windows, and the “spectacular” lake views those features provide. They toured the home at about 2 p.m. one day, made an offer by 4 p.m. that same day, and purchased it before the day was through. They see this as their “forever home,” Beth says. “We absolutely love it here. Whether we travel or go away for the winter, or whatever, we’ll always come back to Minnesota and the lake.” Some of Beth’s favorite design features are the Brazilian Cherry hardwood floors — “those are stunners; we get a lot of comments on it,” she says — the sizable cook’s kitchen with its large island and ample quartz countertop space, and, of course, the 177 feet of scenic shoreline along Long Lake. “It’s a natural shoreline, which appeals to me,” she says. “And we have the sunsets (because it faces west).” She also enjoys being able to entertain guests, which the Fall Home | PAGE 27
home’s three guestrooms, multiple bathrooms, and large gathering areas provide plenty of room for. For Paul, Beth says a favorite feature is their newly-completed, 2,100-square-foot shop, located adjacent to the house. They built it to hold all of Paul’s “big boy toys,” she says, explaining that her husband races cars as a hobby. They also wanted a place to store their boats and other watercraft over the winter. The shop has a car bay, woodworking area and loft, as well as one full bathroom, and one half. In the future, the Priddays plan to remodel the downstairs level of the home to include a larger wet bar and entertainment area. They also want to expand the lakeside patio to add an outdoor kitchen. It was their wish for more shop and entertaining space that led to their move two years ago. They were living in a home on Big Detroit Lake before, and their plans to expand there were thwarted by a small lot size and stringent lakeside restrictions. When they started shopping for a new place, they knew they wanted to stay close to town, Beth says, and they knew they wanted to stay on a lake. “We love everything about lake life,” she says. “We love boating, we love to swim... so when we left Big Detroit, it was really important for us to stay on a lake.” The Priddays have lived in TOP | Beth says the large “cook’s kitchen” is one of her favorite features of the home, with its sizable center island and ample counter and cabinet space. The countertops are made of quartz, and the cabinets are knotty alder. CENTER | The main floor of the Pridday home is elevated, so the “downstairs” is actually at ground level, and has a walk-out sliding door to a back patio and the lake. A large, comfy couch, big-screen TV, and music center make this a fun place to hang out. BOTTOM | Beth Pridday has fostered and adopted basset hounds for years. Detroit Lakes for the past 20 years. Paul is originally from Canada, and Beth grew up in the Midwest. They chose to live in Minnesota, and Detroit Lakes specifically, because of its natural beauty, its size, its lakes, and its proximity to family. In that time, they’ve come to love the community, and Beth, especially, has ingrained herself in Detroit Lakes as a former business owner, educator, entrepreneur and active committee and board member for various nonprofits and city groups. For the past three years, she has also owned The Ice Cream Truck in town, a venture she really enjoys. “I love a small community; I love that vibe,” she says. “I love being active in the community.” Because the couple does so much traveling — Paul is a pipeline auditor and his job takes them all over — Beth says it’s important that they have a quiet place to come home to. A place where they can rest and relax and just feel at ease. Their Long Lake home, she says, is that place. “This is peaceful, and it feels like a vacation, almost like a retreat,” she says, looking around the home. “I don’t have to pack up and head home to another place after the weekends. That’s a big deal.”
We love everything about lake life. We love boating, we love to swim... we love just living on the lake. -Beth Pridday
TOP | The “spectacular” views of Long Lake from the living room windows were a key reason why the Priddays decided to purchase the home. The couple visited the home, made an offer on it, and bought it all in the same day, without hesitation. CENTER | The master bedroom has colorful, whimsical decor elements, like a floral quilt and curtains that feature a bird pattern. Beth says she doesn’t like to be “matchy-matchy,” but instead focuses on colors and patterns that complement each other. BOTTOM | Beth likes to incorporate furnishings and decorations into her home that reflect her personality and preferences. Dogs, especially her favorite breed, basset hounds, pop up in almost every room of the house (like the pup pictured here, in the corner).

ong before he was even thinking about buying it, Tom Campbell was already quite familiar with his house on Lake Sallie. Most people from around here are. With its large size, unique contemporary style, bright bluish-green roof and prominent location right across from the Detroit Country Club, it’s a hard house to miss. “Because of the roof and the moderness, it sticks out,” says Campbell. “Everybody recognizes it as an epicenter. One guy who flies an airplane around here always knows where he’s at by the roof. It’s an unusual home; it’s unique. It’s kind of fun that way.” Campbell, who used to spend his weekends in Detroit Lakes up until about 13 years ago, when he started staying at a place on Lake Minnetonka instead, says buying a house here in town “is almost like coming home.”
TOP | A view from the upstairs loft area shows just how expansive and open the home is. BOTTOM | Campbell has family pictures and memorabilia scattered throughout the home, including this picture of the family’s potato chip business.

TOP RIGHT | An indoor seating area off to the side of the house provides another spot for relaxing and catching some great lake views. BOTTOM RIGHT | Colorful, brightly-patterned furniture and decor provide contrast against the overall lightness and openness of the house itself.
“I never really liked it (in Minneapolis),” he says. “This feels more like home to me.” When he started looking for property here a little over a year ago, he was originally in the market for a lake cabin, but he says he didn’t quite find what he was looking for. Then he came across this Lake Sallie home, and instantly felt it was a match. A fan of the contemporary style, he says the house is ironically similar to his year-round residence in Grafton, N.D., which is also contemporary and features a similarly expansive open-concept layout. Campbell is a partner in his family’s business, Campbell Farms, which grows, packs, ships and markets fresh tablestock potatoes. The company has potato farms near Grafton as well as in Big Lake, Minn., so Campbell spends a fair amount of time in both communities, which are at least a fivehour drive apart. Having a home in Detroit Lakes gives him a good stopping place right in-between the two. There are signs of Campbell’s potato “roots,” so to speak, all around his Detroit Lakes home. Vintage, framed photos of potato chip trucks and potato fields hang on the walls. There are also signs of his years in politics — a picture of him shaking hands with President Donald Trump hangs on the wall in the dining area, for example, and a display case in the hallway off the main entry holds all sorts of memorabilia. Campbell was elected to the North Dakota Senate in 2012 and reelected in 2014. He also made a run for U.S. Senate in PAGE 32 | Fall Home
2018. Though that didn’t pan out, he keeps informational flyers and brochures from his candidacy displayed in the case as a reminder of the experience. These days, Campbell spends the majority of his time at the two farms, but he says he’s been spending more and more time in Detroit Lakes since buying his home here. He never thought of this as a “winter destination” before, he says, but last winter, he got some snowmobiles and other winter “toys” and really enjoyed it, so he thinks he’ll start spending weekends here year-round. Certainly, he’ll be at the home quite a bit in the summers. “We’re water people,” he says of himself and his family. “When the kids are here, they’re out on the lake a lot. On the kayaks, jet skis, wakeboard, boats, just hanging out on the dock... what have you.” He also likes to golf, so there’s a major convenience factor there, being right across from the golf course. Campbell has two grown children, and one 2-year-old granddaughter, who like to visit often. He also opens up his home to other family, friends and even charitable groups that ask to use the house as a weekday retreat. “It’s a draw, especially with the kids,” he says. “I’ve already had two big parties here, and family here. I really like this place. It’s been a good move.” With its roughly 4,000-square-feet of living space, the home is spacious enough to accommodate large groups. It had only two bedrooms when Campbell bought it, but he added some
I just love the openness and contemporary effect… It just had my name all over it when I saw it. -Tom Campbell ABOVE | Campbell says the fireplace is one of his favorite features of the home. He likes the smell and ambiance that a wood burner provides.

walls to the large upstairs loft area to create two additional bedrooms, and he plans to add more walls to make the total bedroom count 6 or 7 by Christmastime. “With friends and family coming over, you can never have too many bedrooms,” he says. Other than that, Campbell hasn’t done any remodeling or other major work to the house. He likes it just the way it is. Even most of the furnishings that came with the place have stayed. “I just stepped right in, and got in,” he says of the turn-key move-in. His favorite features of the home are its wide open main living area, the impressive views of the lake and all the natural light the windows let in, the wood-burning fireplace, a bald eagle’s nest that’s perched in a tree over the house, the large dock where people love to sit and hang out, and of course the home’s overall style and design. “I just love the openness and contemporary effect,” he says. “This is just me.
