Lift your glass: Toast to Tamarac Sept. 9 It’s a time for nature enthusiasts to get get together and “cheers” the gift that is the Tamarac Wildlife Refuge, and this year that time is Sept. 9. Every year the Friends of Tamarac group put together a fundraiser, hosted by Richwood Winery, to help raise funds for the group and its missions. It’s called “Toast to Tamarac”, and with somewhere around 300 tickets sold, Friends members are able to help with different projects around the refuge, as well as provide transportation to local school and youth groups for field trips out to Tamarac. The all-volunteer group full of people passionate about keeping the refuge as healthy and visitor-friendly as possible, will provide wine tasting with a commemorative glass, live music by the Dave Ferreira Trio, appetizers, a silent auction, games and a raffle drawing. The festivities go from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.; tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door. For more information go to tamaracfriends.org or call Vonnie Jacobson at 218-8477193.

Few things say fall like a quaint, little town coming together to build an entire weekend-long festival around pumpkins. Lake Park’s Pumpkin Fest is become an incredibly popular thing to do every fall, as the corn maze is set up, the classic car parade crawls through town, food vendors are set up and the entire downtown area is one, big, orange festival. The Pumpkin Pie Polka Walk, the speed pumpkin cleaning and carving competition, the Scarecrow contest, the Grand Pumpkin Parade...it all has the community coming out to celebrate the beginning of fall. And let’s not forget the tractor display, wagon rides, blind golf car driving contest and pedal tractor pull for kids. The list of events goes on for quite a while. The annual event is always the last weekend in September, which includes a big fireworks show after the Friday night football game. 8 | FALL SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2016

Sneak peek inside: DL Damiens to host Home Tour

NOVEMBER 28 PARADE OF LIGHTS Community members gather in downtown Detroit Lakes, as Washington Avenue is shut down to make room for a parade of lights. Area businesses and orga-

nizations create floats, and the big man himself (Santa) makes an appearance as people sip hot chocolate and kick off the beginning of the holiday season.

DECEMBER DECEMBER 3 WILDLIFE TRACKING HIKE Exploring the North Country Trail in early winter begins at 1 p.m. and goes to 3 p.m. Meet at the North Country Trail Head at the South Entrance of Itasca State Park.

It’s the one time of year people are encouraged to enter people’s homes that they probably don’t know for the sake of design inspiration and good will. Every year the Detroit Lakes Damiens hold their annual Home Tour, which typically features anywhere from three to five fabulous homes in the area. Homeowners who are known to have unique or particularly charming homes open up their doors to the community for this much-anticipated annual fundraising event. Around 300 to 350 people take the tour of homes for $15 per person. The Damiens use this as their only significant fundraiser of the year, with proceeds going to various charity projects around the area, including Thanksgiving meals for those in need, as well as family projects during the Christmas season. This year the event goes on Oct. 1 from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. For more information call Wendy Fritz at 218-234-1353 or Pam Anderson at 218-844-6789. 10 | FALL SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2016

BECKER COUNTY IS BULLSEYE

FOR HUNTERS DEER MAY BE THE HOT TARGET, BUT OPTIONS ARE MANY

F

all hunting is nothing short of a holiday in Minnesota...a big, long, four-month long holiday full of hopes and dreams (literally in the night) of the big kill. Every fall, thousands of excited hunters strap on the camo or the blaze orange, tip-toe out to what they hope and pray is going to be their “hot spot”, and then wait for the big opportunity. It all begins with the birds. In Minnesota, Snipe and Rail Hunting season goes from Sept. 1 to Nov. 6 this year. Hunters slowly make their way through marshes across lakes 12 | FALL SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2016

country, taking aim at the birds as they flush out. Mourning Dove Season also kicks off Sept. 1 and goes through Nov. 9; crow hunting is from Sept. 1 to Oct. 31 and again from Dec. 15 to 31, Early Canada Goose season goes from Sept. 3 to Sept. 18, Youth Waterfowl Day is Sept. 10 and Sandhill Crane season goes from Sept. 10 to Oct. 16 (tentatively in the northwest zone). Ruffed and Spruce Grouse and Hungarian Partridge season also stretch from Sept. 17 through the first of the year. Ruffed and

Spruce Grouse and Hungarian Partridge season goes from Sept. 17 through Jan. 1, Sharptailed Grouse season is from Sept. 17 to Nov. 30, and the beautiful prairie chicken season begins Sept. 24 to Oct. 2. Woodcock season goes from Sept. 24 to Nov. 7, Waterfowl season opener Sept. 24, fall turkey season going all of October, from the 1st through the 31st and pheasant season stretching from Oct. 15 to Jan. 1. The season for small game, including rabbits and squirrels, is from Sept. 17 through Feb. 28. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

Deer hunting season in Minnesota is like a much-anticipated holiday, as thousands of blaze orange dots can be seen all over the Minnesota landscape during rifle season’s 9-day stretch. For zones 1A, 2A and 3A, the season starts November 11 and goes through the 20th. Zone 3 B is from Nov. 19 through 27.

Hunting season begins that same day for those looking for something a little larger and a lot scarier. Bear season goes from Sept. 1 to Oct. 16 in Minnesota. Nearly 3,000 black bears are harvested every year in the state, all done so through a lottery. Although not required, bear hunters are encouraged to attend a bear hunting clinic through the Minnesota DNR beforehand. Elk hunters better act quickly because there are only nine days to try to bag one of these large animals, with this year’s season going from Sept. 10 to Sept. 18. Let’s be honest though, chances of hunters getting one are slim. Only seven licenses have been handed out in Minnesota this year, and if you don’t already have one in hand, that means you’re out for this year. Elk lottery winners have been notified and it is already closed up until next year. It’s hard to put away those fishing poles, but with the catch & release season, there’s no need to. Small bass catch & release season goes from Sept. 12 to Feb. 26 in Minnesota, and Stream Trout catch & release going from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15. Raccoon, Red Fox, Gray Fox, Badger, Opossum (North) Hunting & Trapping takes off on Oct. 15 and goes all the way through March 15. Things start to heat up with deer hunting for archery Sept. 17, and because everybody knows how tough it is to get a deer through archery, that season stretches all the way through Dec. 31. Not so with with the firearm season, which is a fast, furious nine days. For zones 1A, 2A and 3A, the season starts November 11 and goes through the 20th. Zone 3 B is from Nov. 19 through 27. (For young hunters in training, don’t forget about the special youth hunt weekend that is Oct. 20-23.) The deer hunt doesn’t completely end there, though. For old-school style hunters, muzzleloader season goes from Nov. 26 to Dec. 11 this year. Feeling brave? The bobcat season goes Nov. 26 to Jan. 8 for hunting and trapping north of I-94 and U.S. Highway 10 only. Trapping of a variety of animals from beaver, otter, mink and more are allowed Oct. 29 and continue on throughout a variety of dates. For more information, log on to the Minnesota DNR website.

Bobcats, above left, can be hunted in Minnesota with a license Nov. 26 to Jan 8 north of I-94 and U.S. Highway 10 only. Bear season goes from Sept. 1 to Oct. 16. 14 | FALL SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2016

FALL RECIPES STUFFED JACK-O-LANTERN BELL PEPPERS

Ingredients 6 bell peppers, any color 1 pound ground beef 1 egg 4 slices whole wheat bread, cubed 1 small onion, chopped 1 small tomato, diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup chili sauce 1/4 cup prepared yellow mustard 3 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Add all ingredients to list Directions Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8x8 inch baking dish.

Lightly mix together the ground beef, egg, bread cubes, onion, tomato, garlic, chili sauce, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Wash the peppers, and cut jack-o’-lantern faces into the peppers with a sharp paring knife, making triangle eyes and noses, and pointy-teeth smiles. Slice off the tops of the peppers, and scoop out the seeds and cores. Stuff the peppers lightly with the beef stuffing, and place them into the prepared baking dish so they lean against each other. Bake in the preheated oven until the peppers are tender and the stuffing is cooked through and juicy, about 1 hour.

CHEF JOHN’S PUMPKIN PANCAKES Ingredients 2 cups all-purpose flour 2 tablespoons brown sugar 1 tablespoon white sugar 2 teaspoons baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup pumpkin puree 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger 1/2 teaspoon ground allspice 1 egg 1 1/2 cups milk 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 tablespoons lemon juice 2 teaspoons grated lemon zest 1 teaspoon vegetable oil Add all ingredients to list

Directions Combine flour, brown sugar, white sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt in a large mixing bowl, and whisk together for two minutes to aerate. In a separate bowl, combine pumpkin puree, cinnamon, ginger, allspice, egg, milk, 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil, lemon juice, and lemon zest. Mix in the flour mixture, and stir just until moistened. (Do not overmix.) Coat skillet with 1 teaspoon vegetable oil over medium heat. Pour batter into skillet 1/4 cup at a time, and cook the pancakes until golden brown, about 3 minutes on each side. SPICED BUTTERNUT SQUASH SOUP Ingredients 3 pounds butternut squash, halved and seeded 2 tablespoons butter 1 medium onion, sliced 1 leek, sliced 2 cloves garlic, sliced 2 (49.5 fluid ounce) cans chicken broth 2 large russet potatoes, peeled and quartered 1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger salt and pepper to taste 1/2 cup sherry wine 1 cup half-and-half cream 1/2 cup sour cream (optional) Add all ingredients to list Directions Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Pour a thin layer of water in a baking dish, or a cookie sheet with sides. Place the squash halves cut side down on the dish. Bake for about 40 minutes, or until a fork can easily pierce the flesh. Cool slightly, then remove the peel. Set aside. Melt the butter in a large pot over medium heat. Add the onion, leek and garlic, and saute for a few minutes, until tender. Pour the chicken broth into the pot. Add the potatoes, and bring to a boil. Cook for about 20 minutes, or until soft. Add the squash, and mash with the potatoes until chunks are small. Use an immersible hand blender to puree the soup, or transfer to a blender or food processor in batches, and puree until smooth. Return to the pot. Season the soup with cayenne pepper, allspice, nutmeg, ginger, salt and pepper, then stir in the sherry and half-and-half cream. Heat through, but do not boil. Ladle into bowls, and top with a dollop of sour cream. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

The 2016 Duck Stamp features the Trumpeter Swan by Minnesota Artist Joe Hautman .

PUTTING OUR ‘STAMP’ ON WATERFOWL CONSERVATION

Tamarac Refuge is an important rest- ing stop for thousands of ring-necked

ducks each fall. “

The ripening of the wild rice brings scores of migrating waterfowl, including thousands of ring-necked ducks to Tamarac Refuge. Duck hunting has been a tradition on the refuge for decades. While purchase of an annual Duck Stamp is required of all hunters (age 16 and up) of migratory waterfowl, the Stamp is desired by philatelists and collectors of art, and it’s chosen by birders and other enthusiasts of nature as a way to show their support. Virtually all of the purchase price of each Stamp (98%) is applied to conserving habitat. Stamp fees are collected in the Migratory Bird Conservation Fund (MBCF), and are disbursed from the fund to protect wetlands and other 22 | FALL SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2016

natural areas through direct land purchase, leases, and conservation easements. The official name of the Duck Stamp says it all - the Federal Migratory Bird Hunting and Conservation Stamp. Along with ducks, the birds directly benefiting from Duck Stamp revenues are waterbirds such as the trumpeter swan and black tern; shorebirds such as the Wilson’s Phalarope and American avocet; raptors such as the Swainson’s hawk and red-shouldered hawk; and wetland-associated songbirds such as the vermilion flycatcher and yellow-headed blackbird. Since the Stamp’s inception in 1934, portions of 252 National Wildlife Refuges (accounting for more than 2.37 million acres) and over 200 Waterfowl Production Areas (over 3.0 million acres) have been secured via investments made through the MBCF. Mostly, these have been wetland, bottomland, and grassland habitats. Cumulatively, Stamp sales have raised the better part of $1 billion for the protection of wildlife. Migratory birds—be they waterfowl, shorebirds, long-legged waders, raptors, songbirds, or other groups—require stopover sites as they make their way north each spring to their breeding grounds throughout North America, and

then again on their return to wintering areas. Following instinct and other cues, the birds follow well-established routes, known as flyways. The Refuge System provides a series of National Wildlife Refuges (NWRs), aligned with the flyways, where birds can rest and refuel before continuing their long-distance journeys. Just as important, smaller but more numerous parcels of land, located mostly in the northern Great Plains, protect wetlands that ducks and their kin employ for breeding habitat. These tracts, sometimes no larger than 100 acres, are organized into Wetland Management Districts, and are designated Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs). They’re very well named: this so-called Prairie Pothole Region is the birthplace of 50% of North America’s waterfowl. And it’s not just birds that benefit from National Wildlife Refuges. The diverse wetlands, uplands, prairies, and open water habitats provided by Refuges safeguard water quality, as well as populations of amphibians and reptiles; mammals; fishes; butterflies, dragonflies, and other insects; and native plants. The Stamp may not be valid for postage, but when it comes to habitat preservation, it’s ever so valuable. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

NEW INTERPRETIVE TRAIL OFF TOWER ROAD IS

A HAVEN FOR HIKERS

A

re you looking for a new nature spot to explore this fall? Then stop by the Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District headquarters on Tower Road and check out their interpretive trail. The 1.6-mile trail loop around the DLWMD building includes an abundance of wildflowers, butterflies, birds and a variety of other flora and fauna 24 | FALL SCENE | SEPTEMBER 2016

usually found in a well-maintained wetland habitat. “Our hiking trail within the Waterfowl Production Area had been severed from public access when we constructed our new building,” said Stacy Salvevold, DLWMD deputy project leader. “Last summer we were able to reconnect the trail to North Tower Road and construct a new parking area and trail-

head,” she added. “There have also been a lot of nature plantings along the trail over the years, done by local school groups and other volunteers,” she added. “There are lots of interesting things to see, and some new interpretive panels. With all the wildflowers blooming lately, there have been butterflies all over the place. We’re seeing lots of monarchs this year.” DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

The newly completed extension of the interpretive trail at the Detroit Lakes Wetland Management District headquarters on Tower Road now offers visitors a 1.6-mile nature hike. There is also a new trail head and parking area at the entrance to the DLWMD offices, alongside the roadway, which offers public access to the trail even when the offices are closed. There are even some benches along the trail, provided courtesy of local resident Ben Tjepkes as part of his Eagle Scout project a couple of years ago. Before leaving on your hike, stop inside the DLWMD office and visit their observation deck, where a set of mounted binoculars has been set up to provide visitors with opportunities to view nestDETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

ing osprey and trumpeter swans, as well as other wildlife found in the marsh east of the DLWMD office. “We want to welcome the public out to enjoy this new opportunity to be outdoors and get some exercise,” Salvevold said. With the new trailhead located on Tower Road, the trail can even be accessed when DLWMD staff aren’t on

duty, she added. “It’s open from dawn to dusk every day for hiking,” said Salvevold. “We’ve already had a lot of people out here enjoying it.” For more information, please call the DLWMD office at 218-847-4431.

PUMPKIN PATCHES

STORY BY ANNA SCHUMACHER

ARE SURE TO DELIGHT FAMILIES IN THE AREA

A

s the days get shorter and the leaves begin turning colors, you may be on the lookout for some fun fall activities for your family. What better thing to do on a crisp fall Saturday than to take a little trip out to a local pumpkin patch for some autumnal fun? Besides the basic “you pick ‘em” pumpkin field, many area pumpkin patches also offer other seasonal activities like corn mazes and tractor rides. 26 | SUMMER SCENE | JULY 2016

Closest to Detroit Lakes is the Maple Hills Orchard, located off of Highway 10 at 29355 130th Street, about halfway between Detroit Lakes and Frazee. It is open weekends from September 17 to October 23. Besides a sprawling pumpkin patch and a craft table to paint pumpkins picked onsite, Maple Hills Orchard offers yard games, a kids straw bale maze, tractor rides through the apple orchard, raspberry picking, and a

plethora of delicious Minnesota grown apples for sale in its Apple House Store. A little farther away is Janu’s Pumpkin Patch in Frazee at 50617 404th Avenue. On the last weekend of September and the first two weekends in October, stop by to pick up a pumpkin, gourd, or mini pumpkin from this friendly family-run pumpkin patch. While you’re there, grab some lunch and take a quick hayride around Janu’s DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

Enjoy a ride in a giant pumpkin boat at Carter’s Red Wagon Farm in Park Rapids, Minn. (above), or there’s plenty of fall decor at Maple Hills Orchard for great photo opportunities. five acres. There’s also a bouncy house for the kids and a tame deer that can be hand-fed by visitors. And since the Janu’s decorate their pumpkin patch with fall decor, there will be plenty of photo opportunities! Even farther away, though definitely worth the drive, is Carter’s Red Wagon Farm located near Park Rapids. For just 10 dollars a person (children 2 years or younger free), families can participate in lots of fun filled activities during Carter’s Red Wagon Farm’s “Fall Festival and Pumpkin Party”, which is held on Saturday, Sept. 24, Oct. 1, 8, 15, 20, 21, 22, & 29 from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Carter’s offers two massive corn mazes, a hay bale maze, a straw bale

maze, hayrides, giant pumpkin boats, a Rube-Goldberg pumpkin propeller, a hay bale castle, a corn pit, duck races, cow milking, steer roping, a barrel train, a scarecrow band, mini golf, nerf wars, and a family friendly illusionist. As you can probably imagine, a day at Carter’s will be filled with fall fun and promises to create some wonderful memories for all who visit. Near Glyndon, Minn. is the Buffalo River Pumpkin Patch. For $5 a person (children ages one and under are free), you can pick pumpkins, play yard games in the play area, race through the tricycle track, compete in duck races, run through a straw maze and attend cowboy Camp.
