Philanthropic Support of the Detroit Lakes Public School System

Detroit Lakes has had a long history of support for the children of our community. The education and development of our kids has to be our number one goal. It is the responsibility of the members of the community to fund schools through the tax system. However, there are needs of the students that sometimes the system cannot meet. Three separate foundations serve the extended needs of the public school system. The Detroit Lakes Athletic Foundation, Dollars for Scholars, and the Detroit Lakes Public Education Foundation all provide assistance in different areas of educational development. The voluntary contributions given to these organizations help to insure that the children in our community will be given the best opportunities to develop their talents and grow into productive and healthy adults in the future. In addition to cash and memorial donations, please consider naming one, two or all three of these organizations in your will to assist future students in the Detroit Lakes Public Schools.

Detroit Lakes Public Education Foundation

The Detroit Lakes Athletic Foundation was developed for the maintenance and improvement of Detroit Lakes athletics through the use of endowed funds. The purpose of this organization is to supplement the needs of the Detroit Lakes Athletic programs for school age children. Fair and consistent treatment between sports over a number of years will be a primary consideration in approving donations. The funds are currently supporting the purchase of uniforms for all Laker sports teams. Continued growth of the fund will assist in making Laker Athletics available and affordable to all students in the future.

Detroit Lakes Dollars for Scholars is a locally operated and supported, non-profit, tax-exempt scholarship foundation. The purpose of Detroit Lakes Dollars for Scholars is to expand access to educational opportunities by involving and assisting our community in the support of students and in the encouragement of educational achievement. Last May over a one hundred DLHS graduating seniors were awarded scholarships valued at $117,000 to help them afford post secondary education. These scholarships are a combination of annual donations, specific named fund donations, and money held in endowment with the interest only spent to award scholarships each year.

The Detroit Lakes Education Foundation promotes excellence in education and enhances student achievements through partnerships involving alumni, parents, educators, students, businesses and the greater Detroit Lakes community. Donations are building an endowment fund which is used to help meet community educational needs.

Over $175,000 has been pledged to date. The first grant cycle occurred in February of 2009.

Three applications totaling $4,150 were approved for literacy programs at Rossman and Roosevelt elementary schools.
