Favre has a few steps to take for Viking success They had to find their potential last piece of the puzzle in a very unlikely place — right out of the pocket of their biggest rivals. Now, there’s a long ways to go and many factors to go into if in fact Brett Favre is the final piece to the puzzle, but at face value, it’s an upgrade from what was being offered to start the season with. There are plenty of roses — and warts — which are coming with the signing of Favre, who turns 40 in early October. But in the harsh world of professional sports, it’s a win now attitude and the Vikings are set up to win now. The risk and questions were just too big to go with either Tarvaris Jackson or Sage Rosenfels at quarterback. It’s that simple, they were way too much of an unknown quantity heading into the season to lead a team which has been assembled to win now. Not many holes are in the Viking Longship now. The have the best rushing attack in the NFL, headed by the freak Adrian Peterson and backed up by probably a top three backup in Chester Taylor. Their offensive line is geared to run the ball, with the two biggest tackles providing quite the bookend bulk in Bryant McKinnie and Phil Loadholt. The playmakers are there, with the Vikes’ IN THE top draft pick Percy Harvin providing bustZONE out speed and a potential touchdown from TO PAGE 3 anywhere on the field.

Cedric Griffin — locked up for the next five to six years. So, in essence, the only leak which needed to be addressed is quarterback. Now that we’re past the dramatics of Favre’s waffling of retiring or not, it’s time to see what he can bring to the table. The number one concern? Health. Favre is beat up, there is no doubt about that. That’s what entering your 18th year in the NFL brings you. The knicks and bruises are a bit bigger, but it’s something he’s played through for many

years. But it’s that small muscle and tissue in his rotator cuff of his throwing arm which would derail his season. If that goes, the next issue comes up. Unlike what Eric Mangini didn’t do last year, head coach Brad Childress needs to act like he’s in charge and bench Favre — thus ending that consecutive game starting streak. Playing with pain is fine, playing injured just hurts the team. The Vikes do have a pair of valid backups in Jackson (if he isn’t traded soon) and Rosenfels — who can be considered a top second-string quarterback, who can play effective for a streak of four or five games. That needs to happen if the zing goes out of Favre’s passes and his arm is dead. All egos need to be locked away with the key thrown out. Which brings us to the third point in which Favre will need to accomplish to make this a good deal. Favre has to accept the offense will not go as he does. This is Peterson’s gig, it will revolve around him. If Favre can accept his role as a quarterback who only has to throw it 20-25 times, limit the turnovers, move the sticks on third and long, then pull off a few two-minute warning drives — this experiment will work. There was a microcosm of a sign that Favre has already accepted the fact that the team will not live and die just by his performance. In the third preseason game in Houston, the Vikings had the ball from their own 26 with 3:32 remaining in the half. That’s about time to kick in your two-minute offense. In years past, Favre would take it upon himself to drive the team down the field with that overused cliché of being a gunslinger. Not this time — which is a good sign for the Vikes. Instead, the first three plays went to Peterson, who had runs of six, five and 15 yards. The first play after the twominute warning was an incomplete bomb. But then Favre’s experience took over and he started to use his knowledge of the West Coast offense, looked off defenders and took what they gave him.

A short flat pass to Taylor netted three yards. A nice bullet to WR Sidney Rice on third and seven picked up a first down. Penalties slowed down the drive, but on first and 15, another dump off over the middle to Taylor netted five. Two more plays over the middle to Taylor and Harvin put them on the Houston 28 with 37 seconds to go. Favre completed his first touchdown pass, not on a risky hard throw in the end zone, but on a crafty screen to Taylor after looking off the secondary and opening the right sideline for Taylor to run through almost untouched and a touchdown. That drive — which took nine plays and gobbled up 74 yards — was done by a toned down Favre and one which would not have been accomplished by either Jackson or Rosenfels. Those two-minute drives will be key for the Vikes this season, since not many — if any — have been finished in the last three to four years.

It’s that Favre the Vikings need, the one who has holstered his guns and let the talent which surrounds him win the games. Peterson will benefit, as well, which could be Favre’s biggest contribution. Defenses may try and keep stacking the box with eight to nine guys, but Favre will be able to pick them apart. Any good, veteran QB salivates at those nine guys in the box. A few big completions down the field, will force defenses to play Peterson with their base defense and honest. That in turn, will lead to many more seven to 10-yard runs and more production out of No. 28. There are plenty of stars which need to be realigned, but the biggest realignment will be Favre’s attitude and ego. If he does just that — this crazy little experiment may just work.

Frazee geared to run the ball in 2009 Hornets hope for streak like in 2008 season By BRIAN WIERIMA

With a load of last year’s seniors taking a bulk of the 2008 minutes along with them, the Frazee football team is looking to make a repeat crescendo towards the end of the season. The Hornets broke in several younger players during the 2008 season and proceeded to go on a five-game winning streak to cap the schedule. There could be similar steps taken this year, said Frazee head coach Jim Rader. “By the end of the season, we are hoping our younger players are going to be solid and we’ll work the kinks out,” Rader said. “That happened by the end of the third game, when we went on that five-game winning streak.” The rushing game for the Hornets will benefit from their two most-experienced players in three-year center Clint Johnson (5-8, 194) and running back Matt Viste (5-9, 165). “Clint is just a solid vet and Viste is a top 15 running back in the conference, which is pretty good for us,” Rader said. “(Viste) is one of the shiftiest backs I have seen.” Senior Dylan Stender (6-0, 155) also returns after a year at quarterback and will provide Frazee with a staunch aerial attack after he had the secondmost TD passes in the conference. “He takes good care of the ball,” the Frazee coach said of his quarterback. Rushing between the tackles will be junior fullback Mike Moltzan (5-9, 194), who finished as a top 10 rusher in the conference. “He’s a bruising fullback, but he also is fast in the open field,” Rader added about Moltzan.

There will be several twoway starters on the lines, with senior Cody Richter (5-11, 209) providing the offensive line with good feet and strong work ethic. But with four of the five starting offensive linemen gone, there will be a lot of grooming to be done throughout the season on the front lines. Junior Nate Sandberg (6-1, 195) will be a contributor on the line after working hard in the weight room over the offseason. “We should be alright on the line and have four other guys competing hard for the rest of the positions,” Rader said. “We’ll basically have eight new people on offense this year.” Speed will be added on the outside by wide receiver Forrest Jackson, who will be a twoyear starter at the position. “Forrest and three other guys are also competing for the punt and kick returning duties,” Rader said. “They all provide good speed and explosiveness.” Richter and Sandberg are back on the defensive line, while Moltzan will anchor the defense at middle linebacker. There is some strong competition going on in the secondary, with up to six Hornets vying for playing time. “Of those six, all have good speed,” Rader said of his secondary battles. “The defense is starting to play with aggression and they are learning well. The

For the fifth year in a row, the Hawley Nuggets are looking to get over the proverbial hump. But in the Nugget’s case, most teams would be dying to get just one opportunity to get to that type of hump. The Nuggets have played to the Class 2A state semifinals four years in a row — all ending in losses — including last year where Hawley came up just yards shy of making to the finals. “We were just six yards short and a few extra seconds possibly from winning that game,” said Hawley head coach Peder Naatz. “It’s definitely a motivating deal for the kids, to get over that hump. They are hungry to get over it.” And once again, the Nuggets are primed to make yet another deep run through the playoffs with what they have coming back. For one, they have the bulk of their powerful and explosive rushing game back in the form of 1,000-yard rushers junior Kevin Olson and senior Nathan Mattson. Two, they have bookend tackles who have the size of some college offensive linemen and the talent to dominate the line of scrimmage in seniors Erik Rosenfeldt and Tyler Haugtvedt. Thirdly, they have the catalyst to meld all these high-end players together in senior quarterback Taylor Harms. And all this is not to mention they return a load of players back on one of the most suffocating defenses in the area. “Offensively, I don’t think we have a real weakness now,” Naatz said. “We have the options with speed, as well as power rushing. “Hopefully by midseason, our defense is gelling well.” Having the luxury of two tackles who have the size and strength to literally push back defensive linemen into the second level of the defense, it affords plenty of options for the offense which has two of the better backs in the region. Rosenfeldt weights in at 285 pounds, while Haugtvedt plays at 250 and both have good experience. “It’s a good deal having both back, some small colleges don’t have tackles that size,” Naatz said. “They have studied the game and know what to expect.” Senior Brady Berg will start at center, while senior Brantly Gram will man a guard position, with the other guard slot still being played for heading into the season. The offensive line will be key to spring the two-headed rushing monster of Olson and Mattson. “I’m very excited what these two can pull off this season,” Naatz said. “They have added some muscle and Nate (Mattson) was third in sprinting at the state track meet last spring, so you know he has good speed.” Olson also was on Hawley’s 4x100 relay team, which finished sixth in the state meet last year. “They have plenty of speed,

but they also can run with power,” Naatz said. “Nate is stronger and bigger and has grown stronger in his lower body and can cut more sharply. Kevin can be a thumper, too, and he just refuses to be tackled.” Directing all this will be Harms, who has been impressive throwing the ball — thus giving the Nuggets a weapon to use against defenses who are stacking the box with eight to nine defenders to try and stop Olson and Mattson. Harms saw most of his action last season as Hawley’s leading wide receiver. “Taylor is more confident and he knows he will be the one taking the snaps this year,” the Hawley coach said. “He’s also a very talented runner. But if defenses stack the box, we do have that option to air it out.” The responsibility of stretching the defenses will be up to a trio of receivers in seniors Jake Bjornson, Sam Grandbois and sophomore Riley Burns. Rosenfeldt and Haugtvedt will anchor the defensive line, with three to four players in the mix at defensive end, including senior Tyler Gilberts. At linebacker, those who will see action include Olson, sophomore Patrick Arens at middle linebacker, senior Andrew Regnier, Burns and junior Tanner Schultz. The secondary returns Harms at cornerback or safety, free safety Bjornson and Grandbois. All the players on the Nuggets team have experienced a great deal of success over the last four years. For that reason, Hawley has a swagger, but not overconfidence. “Realistically, we are expect-

Can lightning strike twice? For the Lake Park-Audubon football team, they hope it can. The Raiders are ready to heighten the odds of repeating as Section 6-1A champions with a host of talent and experience coming back from the Class 1A state semifinalist squad of last year. LP-A was a quiet state qualifier after a dominating regular season, keyed by a stingy defense which gave up a statebest 6.2 points per game. But after making it to the state semifinals in the Metrodome, the Raiders will no longer be sneaking up on anyone. “There’s a confidence there, not a cockiness,” said LP-A head coach Jed Swegarden. “The players know they can’t be satisfied with what happened last year. But they are setting some higher goals this year.” The Raiders return eight players off that stout defense, which was fast, quick and physical. The Ware twins — Bryan and Danny — return at the outside linebacker positions, where they helped contain any outside rushing attack with their quick feet. Manning the inside linebacker slot is senior Caleb Lunde, with a host of returners back on the defensive line. “Our defense carried us early last year and with a number of kids back on the defensive line and eight returning, I think we have just as much speed as last year,” Swegarden said. LP-A’s leading rusher and leader Kenyon O’Brien has moved on after graduation, but there are several seniors primed to fill in that hole in the backfield. Senior Brian Gordon had a solid year at quarterback, running an efficient offense which didn’t shoot itself in the foot with turnovers. After “his best offseason yet”, Gordon enters his senior campaign with more confidence and ready to take on a larger leadership role. “He’s been more vocal and more confident running the offense,” Swegarden added. This season, LP-A will have a different array of runners with a mix of speed and size. Returning are seniors Bobby Lalonde and Bryan Ware, who each rushed the ball effectively as juniors. Senior Nick Hanson will enter the fray in the backfield, while Jon Nelson will see some action, as well. “Things maybe a bit different this year with our size of backs, but Ware still has that breakaway speed to take it all the way,” Swegarden said. If there is a question mark on the team in experience, it is the offensive line. “We lost some key seniors on the line,” Swegarden included. “We’ll need some guys to step up there.” Bringing some seasoning

on the O-line is senior Brandon Schoeberl, with the rest of the positions up in the air for the first game on the schedule. Gordon will have a pair of reliable hands to throw to, as well as some height, in senior Jesse Wixo and Lunde. Wixo proved to be an effective red zone target with his ability to go up and get a lofted pass in the end zone in 2008. “I think we are going to have some more scoring capabilities in the red zone,” the LP-A coach commented. There were a few goals which were not accomplished in last year’s magical season, like going undefeated and winning the conference. But a return trip to the Class 1A state playoffs is obviously still at the top. One hurdle LP-A will have is in the section, where Royalton and Barnesville has been added. Royalton was the team which ended the Raider’s run through the state with a 42-20 win in the semifinals. “It’s going to be a battle,” Swegarden concluded about the season. Lake Park-Audubon Schedule

“We are not too big.” Head coach John Clark start at the end slots. “We should be able to put a lot pressure on the quarterback from our end positions,” Clark said. “We’ll play the run tough, with Neis being a good runstuffer.” The secondary brings back some good experience in Stevens and junior Mike Johnson back. Turnovers will be a key for the defense and Clark believes the Indians will once again thrive in that area. “We have good athletes across the board and that will help create those turnovers,” he included. “The defense will be a key for us this year. “We lost some horses from last year, so it will be interesting to see who can step up.”

Enough bumps, Spartans ready to break out Ulen-Hitterdal seniors will lead the way By BRIAN WIERIMA brianw@dlnewspapers.com

This is the season the UlenHitterdal Spartans will grow up. After a couple of seasons being forced to play underclassmen, those players are ready to earn the fruits of their labor. “We have the bulk of our returners back and lost only two seniors from last year’s team,” said first-year head coach Dustin Fraten. “They have grown up and ready.” Senior Tanner Wang will be both the anchor on each lines after being fully recovered from an ACL injury last year. “Tanner is a phenomenal lineman, he’ll be opening and plugging holes on the line,” Fraten said. Running behind Wang and the offensive line is senior Taylor Koczur at fullback. Senior Cody Zimmerman will run the defense at quarterback and will provide another strong

rushing option. “Cody can pass it, yet, but he has the control of the huddle,” Fraten said. One of Zimmerman’s targets will be hybrid tight end/wide receiver senior Levi Anderson, who can also play running back. “Our senior group are leaders and you can see it in them this year, they have a bit of that swagger,” Fraten said. The workhorse on the offense will be junior Dillon Stevens, who will average between 2530 carries a game. “The majority of his runs will be between the tackles, but he can also bounce it outside,” Fraten included about Stevens. Junior Adam Wibe will also provide some speed in the backfield, as well as sophomore Nolan Briard. “Our philosophy on the offense will be ball possession,” the U-H coach said. “We want to eat up ground and the clock.”

The defensive line will be led by Wang, while the linebackers will be the key in the nine-man scheme. Sophomore Troy Peterson, Koczur and Briard will handle the linebacking duties. “These guys have taken their licks the last couple of years, but these seniors are hungry to win now,” Fraten said. “If we can stay healthy, I think we can turn this around.” Fraten was a two-year assistant at Ulen-Hitterdal, before becoming the head coach this year. He was also a seven-year assistant at Lemmon, S.D.

Ulen-Hitterdal’s opponents will see a big dose of junior running back Dillon Stevens. He will see the bulk of carries and he can not only run the ball inside, he can carry the rock around the ends and go to the house.

This “phenomenal” lineman will anchor the Spartans in the trenches. The senior guard will be able to open holes on offense, but plug gaps in the defensive line. Opponents will have a hard time blocking this Spartans all game.

Senior Levi Anderson has a strong pair of hands for Zimmerman to throw to. The U-H tight end can hit the seams, as well as be an effective red zone target.

Senior fullback Taylor Koczus will see some running duty, but he will also be the lead blocker for Stevens. Koczus will be a tackling machine from his LB position.

The Waubun Bombers ended the 2008 season with some unfinished business and they feel — despite what it looks like on paper — they have the bullets to reload and complete what they set out to do last year. The Bombers’ path to a potential second-straight NineMan state playoff berth abruptly ended in the Section 8 championship game with a surprising defeat to Ada-Borup. Many of the big guns from that undefeated regular season team are gone, but Waubun head coach Jason McCloskey is confident in their replacements. “I’ve been coaching these same guys now for the last four years,” McCloskey said. “We felt we didn’t leave everything out on the field for that section championship game. These guys want to continue that winning tradition which has been built here over the course of the last several years. “I credit (former) head coach John Clark and the seniors the last few years for building that tradition. We are expecting to win games now that football is back in the minds of the community.” There is a good host of returners, which is coming back at the offensive and defensive line positions. Senior right guard Matt Haverkamp and junior right tackle John Brower will be stalwarts on each line. “Brower will be a force to be reckoned with at 6-3, 270-pounds,” McCloskey added. The backfield took the biggest hits from last year’s graduation class. Gone are 1,000yard rushers Floyd DeGroat and Tyler Voss, along with bulldozing fullback Izaac Bray and the savvy quarterback Dustin Spaeth — who had a 13-to-2 touchdown to interception ratio last season. “The backfield is our biggest question mark entering the sea-

son,” McCloskey said. With Spaeth being a threeyear starter, not many other younger QB’s saw much seasoning. Three entered the preseason with a shot at becoming the regular signal-caller, which includes senior James Ritterman, junior Josh Syverson and sophomore Sam Lerud. “Ritterman was our starter at QB for the junior varsity team and he is a 6-1 quarterback with a good arm,” the Waubun coach said. “He knows our offense and has shown his leadership skills.” Three will look to fill the void left by DeGroat and Voss. Seniors Adam LaDue and Kellen McArthur, along with junior speedster Tanner Voss have the tools to work with to keep the Bombers on par with last year’s amazing rushing performances. “We may surprise some people with our rushing game this year,” McCloskey said. “Voss is very fast and Ladue is like a Floyd DeGroat and McArthur can run well. “I have no concern about their experience. People may not know their names, but they are good players.” Senior John DeGroat and sophomore Luke Morgan will help stretch the field at wide receiver and are reliable targets for whoever is tossing the ball. The defense has a good mix of experience returning, including LaDue and Voss at linebackers and Brower at defensive tackle. Syverson returns as a hard hitter in the middle at linebacker. Although the names maybe different, making other teams overlook them throughout the season, don’t expect the Bombers to buy into it. The motivation to not just rebound from last year’s section title defeat, it is also there to continue a newly-formed winning tradition at Waubun.

“We should be more physical up front...”

Flint Motschenbacher be a key in close games and a run for their second North Country Conference title. “Hopefully we’ll be a more of a physical team than we have been in the past,” said DL head coach Flint Motschenbacher. “We should be more physical up front and we’ll need to play better defense overall. “We have an extremely tough schedule (which features five road games and three home ones).” To accomplish that goal of being more physical up front, the Lakers do have the advantage of returning three offensive linemen. Senior center Justin Holm (6-0, 245), along with senior tackles Pat Williams

(6-2, 205) and Paul Voeltz (6-3, 195) will give the Laker’s a consistent look on the line. The other returning offensive player is junior Josh Stalberger (6-4, 185) at wide receiver, after he led the team in 2008 with 13 catches for 242 yards and three touchdowns. “We have about four to five players in the mix at each position from there,” Motschenbacher said. Sophomore Joe Mollberg will cut his

teeth at the quarterback position after he started at wide receiver last year, hauling in eight grabs for 162 yards and two touchdowns. “Joe practiced at the position all of last year, but it’s different in a game-type of atmosphere,” Motschenbacher said. “He is a good, strong athlete and throws the ball well. He’ll be a good quarterback and we’ll have to develop him along.” Each of senior T.J. Manning (6-0, 185) and sophomore Brian Labat (6-2, 205)

21 “We have played 5A schools before and have done quite well against them.” Another reason the Skippers were added was there would have been an open date otherwise. “The kids work too hard in the offseason to have an open date during the season,” Motschenbacher said. In all, DL will have three field turf games — at Shanley (Sept. 4), at Minnetonka and at Duluth East (Oct. 21). This is also the last year of the North Country Conference, with Thief River Falls already out of it and Duluth Central closing. The 2010 schedule for the Lakers already has four North

With a guarded optimism, the Perham Yellowjacket football team has hopes of reaching the State Tournament for a third consecutive year this fall. The Jackets have a few holes to fill from the team that won the Heart O’ Lakes North Conference title last year with a 5-0 record (9-3 overall). But the cupboard isn’t completely bare. “We have several returning starters from last year and many with playing experience,” said assistant head coach and defensive coordinator Mike Jordahl. “We hope that we can build on that and continue a strong tradition of Perham football.” One hole they don’t have to fill is at quarterback where 6’7” senior Ben Bucholz will run the show. Having lost one of the school’s all-time leading rushers, Nate Schmitz, to gradu-

ation, the Jackets will have to find help for Bucholz in the backfield. Looking to fill that hole will be several players, including Matt Dreyer, Chris Scheidecker, Tim Herrmann and Charlie Schmitz. Schmitz was an All-Conference linebacker last season. Bucholz should have plenty of speed on the outside to throw to this fall. Potential targets include seniors Ben Waldon, Mathias Winkels and Cody Soderstrom. Both offensive and defensive lines should be very strong for the Jackets. Securing the middle will be senior Ben Brill, the team’s center and a defensive lineman. Another big, athletic lineman returning for the Jackets is sophomore Jesse Hein. Hein (6’0”, 260 lbs.) already has two years of varsity experience under his belt. Another sophomore who will be a big part of the defense is 6’2”, 220 pound Harvey McMahon. “McMahon hits hard and has a good nose on defense,” Jordahl said. Perham’s biggest challenge, both in the HOL North, and in Section 8AAA will be Thief River Falls. TRF is new to the HOL North and the Jackets will see them in their second regular season game. Perham will not have a true “non-conference” game. They will take on their six counterparts in the HOL North (Crookston, East Grand Forks, Pequot Lakes, Roseau, Park Rapids, TRF), as well as Pelican Rapids and Warroad from the HOL Classic. Perham and TRF have met in the 8AAA title game four-straight years. TRF won in 2006-07 and the Jackets have won the past two 8AAA titles. “Things are coming together well for us,” Jordahl said. “If we

To say the New York Mills football team has had a pair of frustrating seasons would be a major understatement. After winning the Section 6A title in 2006, the Eagles won their season opener in 2007. Since then, they have lost 17-straight games, including an 0-9 season last year. This year, the Eagles bring a young team to the field that hopes to be the foundation to a return to winning ways. New York Mills has only six seniors on this year’s squad, led by running back Jordan Novak. He was a Prairie Conference North All-Conference selection and All-Section in 6A last year. Other seniors include: Jarrod Norton, Ben Jacobson, Ted Rohr. Steve Kasma and Landyn Saewert. Running the Eagle offense this fall will be junior quarterback Tanner Wegscheid. He started a pair of games as a sophomore when 2008 graduate Mike Baune was out with injury. Joining Wegscheid and Novak in the backfield will be another talented junior, Erik Tumberg. Wegscheid will have some targets to throw to downfield, including Norton, a towering tight end, as well as Rohr. “We have some guys with pretty good speed that we hope to be able to get into the open field and create some plays,” said third year head coach Jon Kotaska. They will have to improve upon an offense that averaged just eight points a game in 2008 and were shutout three times. Saewert will anchor both offensive and defensive lines for Mills. The Eagles defense will also have their work cut out for

It will be a work in progress to replace one of the best quarterbacks who has donned a Pelican Rapids football jersey. With the graduation of threeyear starter Tyden Storrusten leaving behind a gaping hole in the Viking offense, it will be up to one of three quarterbacks to lead the Pelican Rapids’ offense — with the Vikings making the last four Section 8-2A championship games, but losing them all to Hawley. “All three guys bring something different to the table,” said Pelican Rapids head coach Dave Haugen. “It will be a situational thing leading up to the season opener. I do prefer to have one guy playing at quarterback.” The three vying for the starting snaps this season include juniors Andy Johnson (6-4, 165 pounds) and Brady Morgan (6-1, 190), along with sophomore Casey Bruggeman (511, 150). “All of them have limited experience,” Haugen said. “So we will emphasize our rushing game and try and establish the

run.” That job will come down the offensive line, which has some good sized players and experience back. Senior Lance Erickson (61, 250) is a two-year starter at guard. Senior Justin Keller (5-10, 235) and junior Dan Wood (6-5, 225) each will provide size on

Keller and Erickson will anchor the defensive line for the Vikings, while Morgan will solidify the linebacking corp. Ditch will return in the secondary. “The defense is similar to the offense, where it may take some time,” Haugen said. “But we’ll need to control the line of scrimmage. “Overall, these guys have been around a lot of winning and they are expecting it to happen again.
