Nothin’ like the ol’ county fair There’s something a little bit magical about county fairs, the way they pull people together in the heart of summer for time spent on nothing but pure fun. The Becker County Fair is always a buzzing place to be when it rolls around, which this year is Wednesday, July 27 through Saturday, July 31. The smells of that familiar fair food drift through the air while the sounds of laughter (and sometimes screaming) fill the air as carnival rides zip and swirl around. Over in the fairground barns, it’s all about 4-H and FFA, as exhibits and animals await anxiously to see if they get that coveted blue ribbon. Big tent entertainment runs throughout the weekend with performers that never fail to amaze. Two nights of demo derbys also pull in the crowds. Fair organizers are getting ready for a big year this time around, as they get ready to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Becker County Fair.

Thousands of people line the streets to watch as racers start the rally in Detroit Lakes to forest stages near Akeley in the Paul Bunyan State Forest. Full steam ahead for Western Minnesota Steam threshers Stepping onto the grounds of the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers is like taking a step back in time. The weekend-long celebration happens every Labor Day weekend in Rollag, just a few miles southeast of Hawley. This is no ordinary museum of old farm equipment, though. It’s an entire pioneer village that is brought back to life once a year for visitors to get a true taste of what life was like back then. The aroma of made-from-scratch food fills the air, as old-time demonstrations of every kind are dotted throughout the property. Of course the spotlight is shown on the ‘ol steam engines, as a variety of rolling exhibits make their way through the grounds. This year the full line of Minneapolis equipment will be showcased, including traction engines, gas tractors and implements. A big steam train chugs its way around the event, taking visitors on free rides and giving them an up-close, first hand experience of history. It’s all volunteers that run this event, which brings thousands of people through the gates every year. The event runs September 2 - 5. 10 | SUMMER SCENE | JULY 2016

People come from all over the country with campers, tents and a whole lot of yee-haw! Event organizers say a good, solid year will bring in roughly 30,000 “WeFesters”, who often times make the annual event a tradition. The festival becomes almost like a little city, with different campgrounds, a hospital tent and variety of food and clothing vendors. Tickets can be purchased both for the concerts and for campsites at wefest.com. 14 | SUMMER SCENE | JULY 2016

SMALL TOWN DAYS THERE ARE A LOT OF BENEFITS TO SMALL-TOWN LIVING, AND THOSE SMALL-TOWN FESTIVALS ARE ONE OF THEM. NOT ONLY DO THEY BRING OUT NEARLY THEIR ENTIRE TOWNS, BUT THEY PULL FUN-SEEKING PEOPLE IN FROM SURROUNDING AREAS AS WELL. FRAZEE’S TURKEY DAYS Frazee natives don’t just stick a large turkey statue out on Highway 10 and call it good - they truly celebrate the town’s favorite bird. Turkey Days this year is July 29 - July 31, and volunteers are already busy planning for the annual event. A demo derby, parade, food vendors, a street dance and flea market are only a few of the big events that people come out for. 16 | SUMMER SCENE | JULY 2016
Mystery gobbler clues are given out throughout the weekend in the hunt for a money prize, while pizza-eating contests and water fights keep things interesting. Turkey bingo, turkey bowling, a turkey cake walk - you name it, they play it. Turkey Days features a car show, a fitness contest, a beard contest and a whole lot of food. For more information, go to frazeecommunityclub.com.
CORMORANT DAZE Folks living in Cormorant Village southwest of Detroit Lakes roll their sleeves up and put on quite a family-friendly festival every year. This year Cormorant Daze is set for Saturday, Aug. 20. The festive event typically features a 5K walk/run for charity, a car show, “crazy days” store sales, kids games, demonstrations and lots of food and drink. Although this year is the 6th annual Cormorant Daze event, villagers used to DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS
hold it every year before taking a 20-year hiatus from it. In 2011 the community event was resurrected and has been going strong ever since. Cormorant village may be famous for its lakes, but these days, they sit in the shadow of a more famous figure - Cormorant Mayor Duke the Dog. The great pyrenees can often be spotted around town, and during Cormorant Daze, the fluffy white celebrity is known to always make an appearance. PUMPKIN FEST Everybody seems to have a simply smashing time at Pumpkin Fest, held every year in the small town of Lake Park, 15 miles west of Detroit Lakes. That small town swells considerably for the three-day September festival, as kids try to find their way out of a corn maize, an seemingly endless parade of the coolest, classic cars wind their way around the main street and the town is nearly blanketed with an array of pumpkins, scarecrows and fall decorations. Food vendors and a variety of kids games make Pumpkin Fest one of the most popular places to be in the fall. For more
information and a schedule of events, go to lakeparkpumpkinfest.com. Snellman Days There are literally only a couple of residents who live in the tiny village of Snellman, which is located 25 east of Detroit Lakes, but every year folks in the area come together to fill the streets with a big celebration. A flea market, church brunch, bingo and
kids games are only a few of the events for Snellman Days. Participants can take in some karaoke, music and a “feast of food” as the annual drawing for mayor (a one-year term) happens every year at Snellman Days. Like every good village celebration, Snellman Days also typically features a watermelon-eating contest and classic car show.

FABULOUS, FRESH FOOD FARMERS MARKETS AND MANNA FOOD CO-OP DELIVER THE GOODS TO LOCAL SHOPPERS
I
t’s hard to beat biting into a fresh, juicy peach in the summertime, or smearing some homemade jam onto a slice of freshly baked bread. The Lakes Area Farmers Market delivers a little taste of fresh, wholesome goodness to people around the Detroit Lakes area, as it sets up in Peoples Park every Tuesday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The producer-only farmers market features freshly grown or made products, including fruits, vegetables, artisan breads, herbs, plants, homemade maple syrup, fresh meats and food demonstrations. Vendors will also feature a variety of homemade soaps, lotions and more. New this year is a vendor who will be 18 | SUMMER SCENE | JULY 2016
doing live pottery demonstrations in between selling his art. On a typical weekend, event organizers say they see 300-400 people at the farmers market and even more on a “hot” day. The goal of the farmers market is to not only give local growers a place to sell their products on a small, local scale, but to provide products that are guaranteed to be fresh and healthy. This is a goal that is also shared by a fairly new group in town. MANNA CO-OP The Manna Co-Op will also be seen out at the farmers markets this year, promoting its new organization. The co-op just recently secured a new building
location on Highway 34 east (the old Cutting Edge-N-Tanning building), and will soon be bringing locally grown products to shoppers year-round. The group is in the midst of growing its membership to a target-number of 500 members. It’s a one-time fee of $150 to become a member, which buys people a reduced price when the store opens up, as well as the possibility of profits, if in fact, the Manna Co-Op becomes profitable. The store will offer not only fresh fruits and vegetables, but other health products such as essential oils and handmade soaps and more. Membership applications are available by calling Wendy Gordon at 2182334-7438 or emailing her at wgordon77@yahoo.com. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

refuge where the blacktop ends and the backwoods begin! WILDLIFE WATCHING Here at Tamarac, wildlife is left undisturbed as they raise their young. Portions of the refuge are closed to the public during this crucial time, but many viewing opportunities still exist. The most optimum times for viewing wildlife occur around sunrise and sunset. But sometimes even an afternoon visit can be rewarding to the quiet, watchful observer. To increase your chances
of seeing wildlife, explore the edges of lakes, marshes and meadows the 5 mile Blackbird Wildlife Drive. If you feel inclined to exercise, hike the 2 mile long Old Indian Hiking Trail and experience the beauty of the maple basswood forest. Another option is to venture out on the North Country Trail which traverses 14 miles through the southern half of the refuge. FISHING Try your luck in one of our five lakes open to fishing. in the leaf litter of a forest floor. The best time to see one is in the spring at dawn or dusk when the males make a nasal sound called a peent and an aerial display to find a mate and secure a nest site. During the summer months continue to listen for these peents in the woods. The female makes the nest in the forest leaf litter. She lays and cares for one to five eggs. Mom feeds the babies for about a week, but they start searching for their own food within a few days. Woodcocks eat mostly worms, but they also enjoy other tasty treats that they probe out of the soil with their bills. Many people would agree that the woodcock is special bird to see. Sadly, woodcock numbers are declining across their range. Currently, there is no data to suggest that hunting lowers overall woodcock numbers. Scientists report that the declines in habitat including young forests lost to development are the greatest causes of decline. Lack of young forest limits the number of nesting sites for woodcocks to raise their young. Woodcocks are a top priority of conservation for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Tamarac and its partners actively manage the refuge for woodcock and other species with similar habitat. Humans need to continue working together to preserve this wonderful bird. Aldo Leopold wrote, “The woodcock is a living refutation of the theory that the utility of a game bird is to serve as a target, or to pose gracefully on a slice of toast.”
THE WONDERFUL WOODCOCK
BY JAMES KAWLEWSKI Think about how you felt when you discovered a new trail or found something cool. That’s how you might feel when you see your first American Woodcock. Prized by hunters and nature photographers, the American woodcock is a cherished sight to treasure at Tamarac Refuge. The American woodcock is a small, plump shorebird with short legs and a long bill. They make their home in the young woodlands and shrubby fields of Tamarac. hey say the earth without art is just “eh”. But around the lakes area, talented local artists are abundant and continue to make sure there is no short supply of pizzazz. And where do we find these sparks of beauty? Local art shows, of course. The Cormorant Art Show The Cormorant Area Art Club is holding its 19th annual show on Saturday and Sunday, July 9-10 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The event is held at the Cormorant Community Center, located in Cormorant Village, 13 miles south of Lake Park. Twenty five regional artists will display a wide variety of watercolors, acrylic and oil painting, pine needle basketry, prints, cards, clay sculpture and 26 | SUMMER SCENE | JULY 2016
art gift items. Member artists are from Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo, Hawley, Audubon, Dent, Lake Park, Detroit Lakes and Pelican Rapids. Most items can be removed at the time of purchase. Activities throughout the weekend include artist demonstrations and door prizes. Guests can vote for the People’s Choice Award from a selected group of artists’ pieces. Refreshments will be available; there is no admission charge. Arts & Crafts in the Park It’s hard to beat a day in the park...unless it’s a day in a park that is filled with a variety of artists’ vendor booths. Arts & Crafts in the Park is set for Sunday, July 24 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Detroit Lakes City Park, right next
to the lake. Slowly drift from one booth to another, as the shady trees and music create a I-could-stay-here-all-day atmosphere in the heart of Detroit Lakes. Over 100 art vendors will be set up with a wide array of handcrafted art, including pottery, paintings, jewelry, furniture and more. Some of the finest woodcarvers around will be set up doing live demonstrations in the picnic shelter. No need to worry about trying to shop on an empty stomach. Food vendors will also be set up with everything from Offda Tacos to corn dogs to Kettle Corn to cheese curds and more. This event has a way of bringing families out, too, as the city’s playground is a hop, skip and a jump away from the vendor booths. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS
