SENIOR STANDOUT TUCKER STRAWSELL Boys Cross Country
The “free rein” aspect of Cross Country running is what this student athlete finds so appealing about it. Tucker Strawsell says “it’s the freedom” of Cross Country that makes it special: “You can run wherever you want. It can be hard at times, but I like it. It’s calming.” “I like doing long distances,” he adds. He enjoys the usual Cross Country practice route around Detroit Lake, but favors those less structured days “when we just kind of run anywhere.” A team runner since middle school, Tucker is described by his coach as being quietly competitive and a leader by example. Newer runners sometimes go to him for tips and advice, and he’s happy to oblige. Good at keeping his wits about him, Tucker is known to perform best in the most important meets, when the pressure’s highest — conference meets, sections, and last year’s true team meets were some of his best races. He’s gotten close to making it to state more than once, and this year, his senior
year, it’s a big goal of his to get there. He plans to work toward this goal by “trying hard every day, working hard.” He says he’s always striving to do better than he’s done before, setting new, faster times for himself to reach new personal bests. An honor roll student, another big goal of Tucker’s this year is to keep his grades up. He takes his studies seriously, and plans to attend college after graduation, possibly for computer science.
Tucker is always quick with a smile. He does not say much but comes to practice and gives his best. Through his hard work, he has made himself a really good runner. On top of being a great teammate, he gets it done in the classroom. He takes college level courses and is very successful — he truly is a student athlete.
Outside of school, some of Tucker’s favorite activities are reading (he just finished “Ready Player One”) and bicycling. He volunteers at the annual Young Life Triathlon, and also works part-time in the kitchen at The Fireside Restaurant.
Age: 17 Parents names: Jennifer and Brad Wentz Role/position on the team: Varsity runner How long he’s been in cross country: Since middle school. Other sports/activities he’s involved in: Swimming, track, Rotary Interact, Key Club

SENIOR STANDOUT ALEXIS YLINIEMI
Girls Swimming and Diving “Approachable” and “coachable” are words used to describe this Senior Captain of the girls swimming and diving team. Alexis Yliniemi, better known as Lexi, says the younger girls on the team come to her for advice, and she’s always happy to help. And her coach says she works hard and always strives to do her best. Lexi has been on the swimming team since 7th grade, and in that time her skills as a swimmer, diver and team leader have grown. “I feel like I’ve gained a lot of leadership skills since I was younger,” she says. “I had super good leaders, so I had really good people to look up to. Now that I’m a senior leader, I’m super excited to help out the younger girls.” Swimming is different than the other sport Lexi’s in, gymnastics, in that it’s more of a team sport — and that’s something she appreciates.
“Gymnastics helps my body a lot... but here, you get the whole swim team atmosphere and it’s really fun to be with the other swimmers and divers, watching each other grow,” she says. “Everyone really supports each other on the team, so that’s really great.” Lexi describes herself as an outgoing team member, one who’s not intimidating to her teammates and is always willing to offer them advice and assistance. She’s hoping to make finals at state this year for diving — a goal she says will take hard work and consistent motivation throughout the season. The last time she made state finals was her freshman year, “and I feel like that was when I stayed the most focused,” she says, so she’s going to try to replicate that headspace again. After high school, Lexi plans to attend college, and she may be part of a collegiate diving team. She’s tentatively thinking about studying education.
Lexi is the hardest working, most coachable athlete. She is always willing and wanting to improve. Even when things don’t go her way, she still has a smile on her face and supports her teammates. She is a really great kid with a heart of gold. — Diving Coach Bobbi Jo Koons
Age: 17 Parents’ names: Seth and Laurie Yliniemi Role/position on the team: Senior Captain for Swimming and Diving How long she’s been on the swim team: Since 7th grade Other sports/activities she’s involved in: Gymnastics, Rotary Interact

SENIOR STANDOUT SIDNEY LUNDBERG Girls Soccer
Known for her flip kick, this Laker soccer player has had a love for the sport since she was just a little girl. She played on and off as a child, and has been a regular on the school team since eighth grade. Today, Sidney Lundberg is a team captain, a leadership role that her coach and teammates hand-picked her for. A self-described “strong” and “aggressive” player, she takes that role seriously. “It’s an honor that my coach thinks I’m the best person to lead the team,” Sidney says. “I try to be a leader every day, and to keep things positive and fun.” As a member of the track and gymnastics teams, Sidney’s used to competing on her own as an athlete, but soccer is her chance to compete as part of a team — and that, along with the fun she has on the field, is what’s kept her coming back to the sport year after year. “In soccer, you’re part of a team, and everybody has your back,” she explains. “Everybody’s super positive — it’s just a fun place to be.” Sidney says her main goal for the next year is to continue pushing herself athletically and academically, and to simply enjoy her last year of high school.
“I want to be a senior that’s a part of everything going on in the school,” she says. “To just have fun and make my senior year memorable.” When she’s not in school or on the field, track or mat, Sidney loves to hang out on Detroit Lake with her friends, or go mountain biking with her brother. She’s also active in her faith community at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. She does a lot of volunteer work, both through the church and school groups, and she weeds gardens for elderly residents who can’t do it on their own
She is very quick and a hard worker. She is unassuming and works well to help the forwards score goals. She does have a rocket of a shot when she isn’t setting others up. — Soccer Coach David Carter
anymore. She also works part-time as a waitress at Hub 41, and spends some time nannying in the summers. Sidney plans to attend a nearby college after graduation, and is tentatively thinking about entering the field of medicine.

SENIOR STANDOUT REED RELLER Football
This Laker football player sets a good example, on and off the field. A hard worker and quiet leader with a positive attitude, Reed Reller is all about putting the team above self. He says his goal as a player is “to accept my role on the team and to just try to do the best that I can at my role to help benefit the team, so we can move on and play better.” Reed appreciates that team aspect about football — that it’s not just about one or two players, but that it truly takes everyone to be successful on the field. He also likes the physical aspect of football, the contact. He describes himself as a “somewhat aggressive” player who always gives it all he’s got. Off the field, Reed’s an influential voice behind team cohesiveness, helping to arrange group gettogethers that allow the teammates
to get to know each other better and form bonds. He’s part of a senior group that has organized things like team outings to other Laker sporting events, and pool parties. He also helped come up with the idea to hold team dinners immediately after practice, so all the team members could be there and no one would be missing out. “I’d say this year we’ve been doing a lot better on getting everyone’s full cooperation on the team and building more of a team chemistry,” he says. When he’s not in school or playing sports, Reed likes to be outdoors, hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and hanging out with friends. He wants to finish out his senior year with continued success in football and track, and he wants to keep his grades up. Currently working part-time at L&M Fleet Supply, Reed’s plan after graduation is to attend college and study either architecture or engineering.
Reed is easily one of the finest young men I have worked with in my 16 years in education. His work ethic in the classroom, in sports, and positive leadership in all settings is a great example for everyone. Reed may not say a lot, but his actions speak louder than his words ever could! We are lucky to have him on our team.
