Street Faire at the Lakes set for June 3 & 4 With more than 120 vendor booths, Street Faire at the Lakes remains one of

the most popular “kick off to summer” events in Detroit Lakes. Last year Washington Avenue may have been torn up for the event, but this year the newly constructed street is more than ready for the slew of vendors and shoppers. The 16th annual event is set to be an “art and craft experience” with a variety of local and regional talent. Although shoppers will no doubtedly get their fill of unique purchases, it isn’t all about shopping. Live music helps the streets come alive with a festive, fun feel as local musicians take the stage all day, both days. And what brings that street fair experience full circle? The food, of course. Food vendors lining the streets fill the air with their fair food aroma, as people make their way from booth to booth. The Eagles not only set up a beer garden outside, but they also have BINGO going on both days inside. Kids’ activities and train rides will be available as well. The action begins at 10 a.m. Friday morning and wraps up at 5 p.m. Saturday.

Festival of Birds gets underway May 19-22 Detroit Lakes in May is birders’ paradise. More than 275 species of birds are found in Becker County. Why? Because the Detroit Lakes area is in the heart of a transition zone of tall grass prairie, northern hardwood and conifer forest ecosystems. Serious birders flock here each spring for the annual Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds. The Festival is being held May 19-22 in Detroit Lakes, with festival headquarters at Detroit Mountain Recreation Area. Nestled in the woods three miles east of Detroit Lakes, Detroit Mountain opened its new lodge in 2014 and is the perfect nature setting for the event. The Festival of Birds offers morning field trips for birding, workshops for learning, exhibitors and socials for meeting and making friends. Field trips travel this year to Felton Prairie (Chestnut-collared Longspur) and Waubun Forest (warblers), Prairie Wetlands and North Ottawa Impoundment (Heron Rookery in Fergus Falls), Hamden Slough (shorebirds and sparrows) and Tamarac National Wildlife Refuges (Trumpeter Swan/Golden-winged Warbler) Itasca State Park (Blackbacked Woodpecker) and Kelly’s Slough National Wildlife Refuge (new site!).

Downtown is sparkling with completion of street project Downtown Detroit Lakes is a different place than it was a year ago. The Washington Avenue street project took nearly all summer, as first the 800 block was ripped up and re-done, then the 900 block. The roads and sidewalks were completely pulled up, as a new sewer and water system was installed underneath before installing new pavement and wider sidewalks. Ornamental lights and fences now adorn parts of the strip, tying the look together to give a revitalized feel to the downtown area. It took approximately 75 construction workers from all fields to complete the massive, $5 million project that had been in the works since 2007. But while last summer was for work, this summer is for play. Businesses that patiently plowed through a slower season last year due to construction at their front doors are ready to make up for lost time this season.

Old-time music rings out, making it feel like time is slowing down again. Make an evening of it by stopping into one of the nearby restaurants and let the sights and sounds of the yesteryears come drifting back again. There is no registration required to bring your classic cruiser down for the event, just show up and find a place for your honey. A PART OF SOMETHING

MUCH BIGGER: NORTH COUNTRY SCENIC TRAIL RUNS THROUGH HERE

A

merica’s longest hiking trail, the North Country Scenic Trail, now runs straight through one of Becker County’s most naturally beautiful area. Last fall Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge celebrated the opening of a new stretch of the trail which now runs straight through the refuge. A hiker’s paradise, the trail is part of a 4,600-mile journey that begins in the Adirondack Mountains of New York, up through Michigan and around parts of Lake Superior and to our neck of the woods and over to the North Dakota plains. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

Volunteers from the Laurentian Lakes Chapter of the North Country Trail Association, along with funds from a state Legacy Fund trail grant are to thank for the creation of the 21-mile trail that runs through Becker County. The National Park Service administers the trail. Hikers can access this premier hiking trail by driving about eleven miles east of Detroit Lakes on State Hwy 34 where a new kiosk has been built on the south side of the highway in the Hubbel Pond State Wildlife Management Area. Though the hike going south is only about a half mile long, if one hikes north, there are now 165

contiguous miles on the ground ending near Remer. Day hikes are the favorite activity but longer back packing trips can now begin in our backyard! Maps showing the trail, parking areas, and back country camp sites are available at the kiosks as well as information on the local chapter and national organization. Chapter hikes this year are in conjunction with Itasca State Park in honor of the 125th anniversary of state parks and trails in Minnesota. Participants can earn a patch through hiking, biking, or paddling and recording distances to reach 125 miles. 2016 is also the year to celebrate the 100th an-

niversary of National Parks. Miles hiked on the NCTA count towards this challenge. There is no better year than to begin hiking on a trail near you. A four mile spring wildflower hike is scheduled for May21st. Meet at Itasca State Park at 10:00 am at the South Entrance. A National Trails Day hike will take place on June 4th. Meet at the South Entrance of Itasca State Park at 12:30. Non-members are always welcome on these hikes. SUMMER RECIPES GRILLED DILL SALMON WITH DILL SAUCE

(or any kind of fish) Ingredients 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill, or to taste 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 3 pinches brown sugar, or to taste 1 teaspoon vegetable oil 1/2 pound salmon fillet, skin on Directions Add all ingredients to list Preheat grill for medium heat and lightly oil the grate. Mix mayonnaise, dill, mustard, and brown sugar in a bowl. Spread vegetable oil over salmon skin.

Ingredients 3 lb. baby Yukon gold potatoes (about the size of a walnut halved) Kosher salt black pepper 6 tbsp. olive oil, divided 6 slices center-cut bacon cut into 1/2 in. pieces 2 garlic cloves, very finely chopped 1/4 c. apple cider vinegar 2 tsp. firmly packed brown sugar 8 scallions 2 tbsp. fresh marjoram, plus more for garnish

Directions

Grill salmon skin-side down on preheated grill. Spread mayonnaise mixture over top of salmon and cook until salmon is easily flaked with a fork, 6 to 12 minutes.

GRILLED POUND CAKE Ingredients 1⅓ lb. fresh sour cherries ¾ c. sugar .13 tsp. salt 1 c. sour cream 2 tbsp. brown sugar ½ tsp. fresh lemon juice 8 slice pound cake Directions In a medium pan over medium heat, bring cherries, sugar, 1/4 cup water, and salt to a boil. Cook, stirring occasionally, until syrupy, about 10 minutes. Let cool. Heat grill to medium. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, mix sour cream, brown sugar,

GRILLED POTATO SALAD WITH BACON VINAIGRETTE

and lemon juice; chill until ready to use. Grill pound cake until char marks form, about 1 1/2 minutes per side. Transfer pound cake to plates and top each slice with a dollop of sour cream mixture and 1/3 cup cherry syrup.

Heat grill to medium-high. Line a plate with paper towels. Place potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with cold salted water by 2 inches. Cover and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until easily pierced with a knife, 14 to 16 minutes. Drain and let cool. Transfer to a bowl and toss with 2 tablespoons of oil. Meanwhile, cook bacon in a large skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until crisp, 5 to 7 minutes. Remove to prepared plate with a slotted spoon. Discard all but 1 tablespoon of bacon drippings from skillet. Off the heat, add garlic, vinegar, and brown sugar to the drippings in the skillet, scraping up any browned bits. Whisk in remaining 4 tablespoons oil. Season with salt and pepper. Transfer to a bowl. Grill potatoes cut-side down until lightly charred, 2 to 3 minutes. Grill scallions, turning occasionally, until charred, 4 to 6 minutes. Chop scallions into 1-inch pieces. Add potatoes, scallions, and marjoram to bowl with dressing, and toss to coat. Let stand for 5 minutes. Sprinkle with bacon, and toss to coat. Season with salt and pepper. Garnish with marjoram. Serve immediately.

If you feel inclined to exercise, hike the 2 mile long Old Indian Hiking Trail and experience the beauty of the maple

basswood forest. Another option is to venture out on the North Country Trail which traverses 14 miles through the southern half of the refuge.

FISHING Try your luck in one of our five lakes open to fishing. There are many varieties of fish to be caught including crappie, walleye, sunfish, northern pike and bass. A fishing map and regulations can be obtained at the refuge information kiosks or the visitor center. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

WATCHING FOR WARBLERS

T

amarac is one of the premier birding locations in the Detroit Lakes area, particularly in May as the spring migration takes place. As many as 250 species of birds have been observed here, 25 of which are warblers. The varied habitat of pines, hardwood forests, lakes, marshes, and bogs draws the birds. The warblers either nest here or pass through during migration. Many of the warbler species are known as neo-tropical migrants, those that winter in Central and South America. Warblers are primarily insect-eating, and they arrive in the spring along with the arrival of their food source. One of the sure signs of spring is the arrival of the yellow-rumped warblers. They are typically the first to arrive. There has been research on the golden-winged warblers on the refuge since 2006. It is among the most vulnerable and steeply declining bird species in North America. Scientists are looking at habitat loss, hybridization with the blue-winged warbler, global climate change, and the ability to survive in their wintering grounds of Central and South America are possible reasons for decline. For many bird watchers this sighting is a real highlight, as this species is of high continental conservation concern and is listed as a Resource Conservation Priority species by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Tamarac Refuge has some of the DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

largest concentrations of golden-winged warblers in the country. They can be seen along woodland edges and in young aspen stands. Some particularly good locations on the refuge for birding are the Chippewa Picnic area, the section of the North Country Trail running along Tamarac Lake, as well as east and west of the wildlife drive crossing, the Old Indian Trail, and the Blackbird Wildlife Drive. When on the wildlife drive, you might want to drive with your windows open so that you can hear them as well as see them. A stop along the wildlife drive near the observation platform may allow you some good viewing opportunities. Take advantage of the beauty and diversity of the refuge for prime-time birding. gin. The 7th Annual Shakespeare in the Park will be presenting “Henry IV Part 1” will be performed at the Detroit Lakes City Park at 7 p.m. Henry IV Part 1 is one of Shakespeare’s historical masterpieces. It follows both the story of King Henry IV of England as he tries to put down the rebellious families from the north of England, and Prince Hal (later King Henry V) as he comes of age with less than savory friends. It has a wonderful balance of both drama and comedy, with action and hijinks sure to be enjoyable for everyone. The shows are June 24 & 25 and again July 1 & 2.

THE CENTER Called “The Center” of Detroit Lakes, the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center’s fitness facility is one that often “wows” visitors. From the 6-level tube slide, bumper balls and climbing wall to the spider maze, jump blocks and punch bag forest, the Backyard provides hours of indoor entertainment. Day passes, annual and month to month memberships are available. Also, check out the group exercise classes. A class schedule can be found at dlccc. org.
