“It means a lot. It was really great to see all my relatives and friends.” — Beau Hanson

Hanson captures second Pine to Palm championship STORY BY robert williams • rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com

B

eau Hanson took out two of the Pine to Palm tri-medalists by lopsided scores in the quarterfinals and semis but had his hands full with University of Minnesota’s William Leaf Sunday before capturing a second career championship 2&1. Leaf took charge early with a birdie win on the first hole and a par to Hanson’s bogey on the second hole. “I got off to a better start than I have been, definitely,” Leaf said. Hanson came out with a lot of adrenaline and found himself over the green often early in the match. His putt on the first hole was a frustrating miss that lipped out to agitate the already pumped-up 2012 champion. “Right away, I could definitely feel the adrenaline right on the first tee shot,” Hanson said. “The second hole I went a little deep. It kind of confused me. I felt like I swung really smooth, but it just

4

jumped. That adrenaline played a really big part.” Hanson halved the par-three third hole to stop Leaf’s early push. “I had to just calm myself down,” said Hanson. “I was thinking you’ve got to get it together. You don’t want to try to mount a comeback from five or six down.

I just had to keep it together and made a good putt on three to halve the hole and get some momentum coming back my way.” Sand came into play for both players with Hanson coming out successfully with an impressive save on hole five where both golfers parred. Hanson again found the beach on eight, but it was Leaf who routinely found himself using the sand wedge. “It was tough and a little bit of a grind for me today,” said Leaf. “I have a slight advantage being out here all the time,” said Hanson. “I know where to miss, so when I hit in eight’s bunker, I can’t remember the last time I was in eight’s bunker. I know not to hit it there.” Hanson also played with a decidedly home-town gallery of support - while Leaf had plenty of fellow Gopher teammates in the crowd.

“It means a lot,” said Hanson. “It was really great to see all my relatives and friends.” Hanson has been a mainstay at the Pine to Palm, while Leaf made his first appearance. “I just couldn’t hold on — kind of lost it mentally; I got a little tired,” Leaf said. “It’s a good tired.” Hanson did not see a sniff of the lead on the front nine. Both golfers shot a one-over 37 to go out all square. Hanson made an eagle three on hole no. 12 to answer a birdie on 10 from Leaf to head to the final six holes again square. “It was fun to feel the pressure and feel the heart rate get up,” said Leaf. “It’s exciting.” Hanson took control on the par-three 14th with a par, while Leaf battled the front bunker for bogey giving Hanson his first 1-up advantage. After halving 14, the par-four 15th created some more drama. Both players connected with trees on their drives using three-irons, Leaf’s went about 30-yards forcing a long second shot. That tree was the difference between par and bogey and Hanson moved to 2-up with a par. Both players made par on 16 and 17 to end the match 2&1 Hanson. Hanson stuck an approach on 16 from 80 yards out to thwart a comeback. On 17, he was safely on the green off the tee. Leaf was forced to get up and down from behind the green. Despite the loss, Leaf takes a bunch of momentum into his senior season with the Gophers after a fine showing. “It’s awesome,” he said. “So fun. Not many tournaments you get to play stroke play to match play. To be thrown into a bracket and go one-on-one with some guys, it’s special and a lot of fun to keep battling and grinding. I saw a lot of good things in my game this week. Going in as a senior I want to make it the best I can. It’s about time right now to get the game sharp and keep it there.” Hanson likely made his final appearance at the Pine to Palm and joins the past two champions Alex Kline in 2015 and Ben Welle in 2014 in making the decision to pursue golf professionally. “I don’t think you’ll see me here next year,” Hanson said. “I’m leaning toward the Canadian tour right now, but we’ll see.”

“I couldn’t hit a shot more than 40 yards for at least a month.” — Beau Hanson

Beau Hanson gets fresh start after injury layoff Two-time Pine to Palm champ makes return at Minnesota State Open STORY BY robert williams • rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com

L

ike the three prior Pine to Palm champions, Alex Kline (2015), Ben Welle (2014) and Jon Trasamar (2013), Beau Hanson elected to turn professional after winning the title in 2016 and will not be defending this year. The streak of having a new champ goes back one more year to Hanson’s first championship in 2012. He missed his first chance to defend at the 2013 Pine to Palm while golfing in the U.S. Amateur. “I’ve always wanted to win the Pine to Palm,” he said. “It’s basically my home club and one of my favorite tournaments. The first one was more special, but I had a lot more family at the second one

8

and that was pretty cool to have all those guys there.” After the the 2016 tournament, Hanson finished his last semester and graduated from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He turned professional in October. This spring he played in Minor League golf tour events in Jupiter, Palm Beach and the second major of the tour at the Abacoa Golf Club in Florida. In May, Hanson was two rounds into the Canadian Tour Q-school qualifier at Crown Isle Resort and Country Club in British Columbia when injury struck. After the second round of play, Hanson was practicing on the

range and pulled a rib muscle. He tried to play through it the following day and was forced to withdraw halfway through the third round after reaggravating the muscle. Hanson injured an upper right rib muscle and was unable to swing fully as he felt pain right at the point of impact. It took eight weeks to fully recover. “It was in the absolute worst spot you can get,” said Hanson. As of late July, Hanson has only been back playing for two weeks. “I waited all that time to hit driver or any club below a 60-degree until it was completely healed so there were no

repercussions,” he said. “I can fully hit a driver now.” The wait was both doctor’s orders and Hanson’s desire after the initial injury and subsequent strain to make sure he was capable of returning in the shortest amount of time. “It was in such a dangerous spot, you can aggravate that in no time if you’re not careful and then you’re out for another month,” he said. “It’s just something you have to make sure is completely healed so it’s out of your mind.” Overcoming the mental part of injury recovery was compounded with an inability to go full force even if he wanted to. 10

“Even when it was not hurting very much, my body would protect itself and not fully let me go through the ball like I normally would,” he said. “When I tried to play through it, when I really did it, that’s when my head was telling my body, ‘let’s never do that again.’” During the downtime Hanson worked out a lot, mostly running, as he was unable to do any twisting or sit-ups while trying to protect the rib. “I did practice my short game, putting, chipping and all that stuff,” he said. “I couldn’t hit a shot more than 40 yards for at least a month. After that, it was slowly going up and up until I could hit a full shot.”

| The Pine to Palm GOLF TOURNAMENT — AUGUST 7–13, 2017

Despite having to wait to to get back on the course, Hanson found positive ways to impact his game. “My short game got stronger because of it; I could practice different aspects of my short game, which I think is the most important part,” he said. “It hasn’t affected me long game-wise. I was a little rusty at first but it’s back to normal.” Hanson is playing the rest of the year by ear and plans to make his return to competitive golf at the Minnesota State Open Championship at StoneRidge Golf Club in Stillwater July 21-23. Other tournaments on the schedule are the North Dakota Open and a few Minnesota PGA tournaments. “When it comes to this winter, I don’t have a plan yet, because I want to see how I’m playing and see what I can do this summer,” said Hanson. A couple possibilities are returning to Florida or heading west to Arizona for the Gateway Tour along with a potential trip back to the Canadian tour next year. “It’s kind of wide open for me,” he said. While he won’t be competing at this year’s Pine to Palm, Hanson will be present during the tournament working the bag for Dan Cavanagh out of Perham. The two lived together while Hanson was golfing in Florida. Cavanagh is a former collegiate player at Florida Atlantic University and graduated from the school as a Finance Major. Hanson imparted some of his knowledge on his own caddy at last year’s Pine, Hunter Burnside, of Detroit Lakes, who made a big impact as a freshman on this year’s Detroit Lakes varsity golf team that placed third at the Class AA state meet. Burnside noted how watching Hanson win last year was a great lesson in course management. “I think he’s pretty wise already and he learned a lot, but I think he already knew from seeing me and his dad play a lot,” said Hanson. “He hangs out at the Country Club all the time. He’s pretty patient, as well. I tried to be. Hopefully, he got some of that. I think he’s going to turn out to be a really good player.” While not defending his second title, Hanson looks forward to viewing this year’s tournament with perspective caddying for Cavanagh. “I’m excited to watch all the guys at the Pine and see what happens,” he said.

Hanson top 10 at State Open Reigning Pine to Palm champion Beau Hanson shot four-under in his first competitive golf since a rib injury during the opening round of play Friday at the Minnesota State Open Championship being played at StoneRidge Golf Club in Stillwater. Hanson carded an opening round, four-under, 68 to finishing the first day of play tied for third place and two strokes behind defending champion and University of Minnesota Gopher Benjamin Greve. Greve went on to win by five strokes shooting -15 over three rounds of play with fellow Gophers in the top five: runner-up Jon DuToit at -10 and Justin Doeden at -5 in tied for fifth place. Hanson followed up his opening round with a 73 on Saturday and even par 72 on Sunday to finish with a score of 213, three-under for the tournament. For his efforts, Hanson claimed $2,100 for a share of 10th place with Trent Peterson of Valleywood Country Club and Brent Snyder of Troy Burne Golf Club. Other notable Pine to Palm golfer finishes: Peter Jones tied for 20th with a score of +1; Andrew Israelson grabbed a share of 25th place at +2.

Mid-Am champion Scott Uithoven and runner-up Matt Johnson share a laugh on the sixth green during Sunday's championship play.

Uithoven catches fire at the turn for Mid-Am title

STORY BY robert williams • rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com

cott Uithoven made a move late on the front nine of the Pine to Palm Mid-Am championship round and pushed North Dakota State University women’s golf head coach Matt Johnson to the brink winning five consecutive holes to take the match 5&4 Sunday afternoon. “We both had a few shaky shots, once we got past five I was pretty steady,” said Uithoven. Johnson won the opening hole, but Uithoven responded on the par-4 second hole. Uithoven grabbed a short-lived lead on the par-5 fifth hole, but the match was all square to the eighth tee box. 12

“I actually putted better today than I have,” said Uithoven. “Been struggling to get the ball to the hole all week and today I actually got it to the hole.” Uithoven bombarded the cup winning five straight holes beginning with eight and moving to a commanding 5-up lead on hole no. 12. “I was really just trying to get used to the greens. I play down south, so a little different grass. It just takes a while to get used to it.” Uithoven hails from Mississippi. He made a push this season to win the title after having been the

| The Pine to Palm GOLF TOURNAMENT — AUGUST 7–13, 2017

medalist the past two seasons and last year’s runner-up to two-time winner Kent Spriggs. “I had a goal to get to the finals last year and lost to Kent - we had a good match,” said Uithoven. “Every year is a new year. First goal is to get to match play and hoping to get to the finals again. I’m very pleased. It’s nice to win this year. More than that, win or lose, it’s just a great week.” Uithoven plans to return to defend the championship next summer, with approval from his wife. “It should be a little easier this year, now I’ll be the defending champion,” he said.

“I don’t think you can go anywhere in this country and find something like this.” — Chuck Renner

Renner keeps streak alive; wins sixth straight Super Senior title STORY BY robert williams • rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com

C

huck Renner continued an astounding streak of 24 consecutive victories notching his sixth straight Super Senior title Sunday at the Pine to Palm in Detroit Lakes. Renner again overcame having the target on his back from the field. “That’s alright, it’s motivation,” he said. Renner took down his neighbor Doug Gillund in an ironic twist - with the putter. Gillund came in putting hot and using that momentum to make a run to the finals. Renner sank a lengthy putt on 14 to go 3-up and did it again on 15 to put the match away. “I hit a shot about 30 feet back of the green with a right to left break, pretty substantial,” he said. “It was just a shocker, really, to follow up the one on 14.” Renner won the opening four holes to take a big 4-up lead and pushed it to 5-up on the par-4 sixth.

14

“If you can get off to a good start that always puts a lot of pressure on the opponent,” Renner said. “In match play, it’s hard to ignore it.” Renner’s good start left Gillund searching to get the winning ways back with his putter, but he failed to mount a charge early. “Well, there was really no pressure on me,” said Renner. “He was struggling.” Gillund found momentum after the turn winning holes no. 10, 11 and 12 to close to 2-down. The pair halved the 13th before Renner fired off the two long putts culminating in a 4&3 victory. “I’m surprised as anybody,” he said. “When I first came here, all I wanted to do was get my name on that board one time. When I’m home in the winter in Phoenix, I have a trophy and weight room where I exercise. To be able to look up there and see that, that’s special. It’s something to be proud of and hopefully, this will inspire other people to do the same.” One of Renner’s inspirations is

| The Pine to Palm GOLF TOURNAMENT — AUGUST 7–13, 2017

John Solheim, Chairman and CEO of Ping. “The reason I play as well as I do is because when I worked there for 26 years he gave me a membership to Moon Valley Country Club,” said Renner. Moon Valley in Phoenix is famous as the course where Annika Sorenstam shot 59. Solheim continued Renner’s membership even when he dropped down to a part-time working basis and encouraged him to try a new set of irons. Renner played with that new set of Ping irons at this year’s Pine to Palm. “The ones I’m playing now have accounted for my success this year,” he said. Renner will likely return to defend his sixth straight title and not just for the golf. He enjoys the entire atmosphere at Detroit Country Club during Pine to Palm week. “I don’t think you can go anywhere in this country and find something like this,” he said.

Six-time Super Senior champion Chuck Renner finished his run at the 2016 Pine to Palm a winner of 24 consecutive matches.

Daily highlights from the 2016 Championship STORY BY robert williams • rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com Monday George Theisen of Monticello got the 84th Pine to Palm off to a hot start with a hole-in-one on the par-3, 14th hole using a six iron. The ace was not enough to get Theisen into match play as he finished 29th in Senior division qualifying with a score of 81. Tuesday Three-time Pine to Palm champion Jack Rule returned to Detroit Lakes as a special guest of Detroit Country Club. Rule captured three consecutive titles from 1958-1960 and was the first golfer to win

16

three in a row. He was the medalist in his first title year in 1958 and nearly missed a fourth straight championship falling to Dayton Olsen in the 1961 championship match.

Wednesday Medalist honors were shared in all four divisions. The 2015 runner-up Charlie Duensing and Peter Jones, both University of Minnesota golfers, caught first round leader Benjamin Skogen for a three-way tie to unseat two time-defending medalist Grady Meyer in the championship division.

| The Pine to Palm GOLF TOURNAMENT — AUGUST 7–13, 2017

Left to Right: George Theisen of Monticello aced the par-3, 14th hole using a six iron early Monday. Three-time champ Jack Rule (19581960) returned to Detroit County Club to play a guest round on Tuesday. AJ Greff was the lone golfer to sweep both medalist and championship titles in any division. He was one of a host of co-medalists after the completion of play Wednesday.

Moorhead’s Jim Mikkelson and St. Paul’s JT Johnson tied atop the field with match scores of 142 to claim co-medalist honors in Mid-Am. San Tan Valley, Arizona’s AJ Greff, Bloomington’s Marc Redman and the low local golfer Dan Drenth of Detroit Lakes all earned co-medalist honors with oneover rounds of 72 in Seniors. Greff was the lone golfer to sweep both medalist and championship titles in any division. Lake Park’s Bob Jamison and Thomas Wood of St. Louis held off a pair of Detroit Lakes golfers in Steve Sundby and Paul Krueger by one stroke to claim co-medalist honors in the Super Senior division.

Thursday There were 10 upsets during the opening round of championship match play at the 84th Pine to Palm golf tournament in Detroit Lakes Thursday. Half of the players seeded in the 40s moved on and No. 53 Matthew Sieg of Osseo, Wisconsin and No. 44 Lincoln Cizek from Shakopee came out of the same foursome and will face each other in the next round. Friday Detroit Lakes’ native Tanner Lane was a fairway over on the final hole, 178 yards from the 18th green on the sixth fairway, and stuck a nine iron that rolled to within 20 feet, setting up a birdie putt to

defeat University of Minnesota’s Justin Doeden and give a loud throng of supporters a wild finish at day two of match play at the Pine to Palm golf tournament in Detroit Lakes. “It was the best birdie of my life,” said Lane. “Below the hole is where you want to be and I decided to put it right at it and hit it up the slope and see what happens and it went in. It was fun to do. I love this tournament and was happy to be able to pull one out tonight.”

Saturday Mother Nature tried to steal the show during Saturday’s play that was interrupted twice for weather delays, while crews were out early in the morning with chainsaws to clean up downed trees from overnight storms. Sunday Chuck Renner continued an astounding streak of 24 consecutive victories notching his sixth straight Super Senior title Sunday. What was more astounding was a rare chance to see the straight-hitting sixtime champ actually find some trouble and work his way out of a bunker on the eighth hole.

Clockwise from Top: Shakopee’s Lincoln Cizek, seeded 44th, pulled off one of 10 upsets in the championship field on Thursday. Detroit Lakes’ Tanner Lane pulled off a wild shot from a fairway over on the final hole Friday. He got up and down for birdie and a victory in front of a raucous. hometown gallery on the 18th green. Overnight storms and two weather delays during play threatened the tournament Saturday. Chuck Renner was the star of championship Sunday capturing his sixth consecutive Super Senior championship and extending his match play win streak to 24 straight.

“You miss a fairway out here and it’s trouble.” — A.J. Greff

Greff takes down defending champ in Senior division STORY BY robert williams • rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com

F

ormer Pine to Palm Mid-Am champion from 2012 A.J. Greff captured his first Senior division title upending the defending champion Keith Aasen 2&1 Sunday at Detroit Country Club. “I played every match and was never down; that was a good thing,” said Greff. Greff got off to a good start and never let up on Aasen. “I won the first hole and just kind of kept it going until the backside there,” said Greff. The lead never stretched more than 2-up and Aasen closed to 1-down on hole no. 5, but Greff pushed it back to 2-up at the turn. Aasen fired back winning hole no. 10, but Greff answered on 11 and held the 2-up lead to the finish. “I hit pretty solid,” he said. ”I missed a few fairways, more than I wanted, but my putter was pretty faithful so I counted on that to make a lot of short and medium putts.”

18

Greff’s strategy remained the same from stroke play Monday all the way to the championship final on Sunday. “I just tried to hit fairways,” he said. “That’s they key out here. You miss a fairway out here and it’s trouble.”

| The Pine to Palm GOLF TOURNAMENT — AUGUST 7–13, 2017

After not having won the Mid-Am title since his first victory in 2012, Greff made the move to Senior division this year. “I was kind of iffy on which division I wanted to go in and I thought I’ll just try the Seniors,” he said. “I haven’t won the Mid-Am and I’m not trying to win five of them. I’m not Chuck Renner,” Greff laughed. Scott Linnerooth was the Consolation champion in Senior division playing in his 25th year at the Pine to Palm. Left: Keith Aasen has been no stranger to the Senior Division finals winning in 2015 and placing second at last year’s tournament. Right: A.J. Pine to Palm Senior Division turns 50 STORY BY robert williams • rwilliams@dlnewspapers.com

T

he 85th Pine to Palm golf tournament marks the golden anniversary of the senior division, which was instituted in 1967. Former Detroit Lakes Tribune Sports Editor Ralph Anderson reported on the “new look” of the tournament as it added the division for players 55 and older with a championship flight of 16 golfers, plus four flights of eight golfers each named after lakes in the region Eunice, Maud, Lizzie and Lida. The new division drew 48 senior golfers to the tournament, with 30 vying for the championship. Royce Herndon of Oklahoma City defeated co-medalist Ed Printz of Omaha 1-up for the inaugural Senior championship. Herndon 20

took out both medalists in defeating Erv Kaiser of Fargo 6&5 in the semifinals. Printz negated a chance for a local golfer to make the finals defeating DL’s Marlin Marquardt 4&2 in the other semi. Printz went on to win the next three Senior titles from 19681970 and added a fourth in 1973. There is only one other four-time winner of the Senior division, Robert Wernick 1996-97 and 2000-2001. Bill Swanston won three; his first in 1987 and back-to-back titles 1991-92. Other back-to-back winners include Don Sarenpa 197576; Rodney Adolph 1988-89, Joe Mayer 1994-95 and Gerry Douglas 1998-99.

| The Pine to Palm GOLF TOURNAMENT — AUGUST 7–13, 2017

Since Wernick’s two straight in 2001, each year has seen a new champion. Three golfers have captured two championship in that span. Pat Vincelli owns a pair from 2002 and 2006. Tim Rubis won in 2010 and 2013 and Scott Linnerooth the most recent with titles in 2012 and 2014. A.J. Greff is the defending champion and medalist. He defeated 2015 champion Keith Aasen 2&1.
