Auto aids that can help older drivers Dear Savvy Senior My wife has Alzheimer’s disease and I worry about her wandering off. What tips or resources can you recommend to help me with this? Always Moving Dear Always, Wandering is a very common behavior in people with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia. For caregivers, this can be frightening because many of those who wander off end up confused and lost, even in their own neighborhood, and are unable to communicate who they are or where they live. But there are things you can do to guard against this and protect your loved one. Here’s what you should know. Wandering Numbers The number of Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease today is estimated at 5.3 million, and according to the Alzheimer’s Association more than 60 percent of them will wander away from their homes at some point. Most wanders – around 95 percent – are found within a quarter mile of their last location, but if an elderly person is not found within 24 hours, there is a 50 percent chance they’ll suffer a serious injury or die. Home Solutions To help keep your wife safe and at home there are a number of things you can do. For starters, you can reduce her tendency to wander by keeping keep her occupied with simple activities and by encouraging her to move and exercise. There are also a variety of simple household adjustments you could make like installing a “key access” deadbolt or some type of safety lock on the exterior doors to keep her from wandering out, or to keep her from driving away, hide the car keys. You can find many other wandering prevention tips at alz.org/safetycenter. It’s also a good idea to alert your neighbors that your wife may wander so they can keep an eye out, and have on hand a recent picture of her to show around the neighborhood or to the police if she does get lost. Helpful Programs There are also a variety of programs that can help locate your wife if she happens to wander off. Here are some to check into: Silver Alert program: Currently available in about a dozen states, this program is modeled PAGE 24

after Amber Alerts for missing children. If your wife goes missing, you contact Silver Alert and they alert the public and law enforcement agencies and the media so that citizens can be on the look out. To find out if Silver Alert is available in your state, contact your local Alzheimer’s Association – call 800-272-3900 to get your local number. (Note: Congress is currently considering a national Silver Alert bill, which would provide funding to help all states create programs in the future.) Medic Alert + Safe Return program: Offered by the Alzheimer’s Association (medicalert.org/ safereturn; 888-633-4298) this is a national program that can also help locate your wife if she wanders away. With this service she would wear a medical alert ID bracelet or pendant engraved with her medical conditions and the Safe Return phone number. She will also be listed on their national database that anyone can call at any time to report her missing or found. This program costs $25 per year, with a $25 initial setup fee. Project Lifesaver: Currently offered by around 1,100 local law enforcement agencies around the country, Project Lifesaver (projectlifesaver. org; 877-580-5433) provides a wristband to its members that contains a radio transmitter and emits tracking signals. If a member goes missing, one or two officers will use the tracking equipment to quickly locate them. The cost for this service is around $30 per month with a $99 enrollment fee. GPS Tracking The Alzheimer’s Association recently introduced a new GPS locating service called Comfort Zone (alz.org/comfortzone; 877-259-4850) that can help too. Powered by Omnilink and specifically designed for Alzheimer’s patients, with this service your wife would carry or wear a small GPS tracking device that would notify you or other caregivers via text or e-mail if she were to wander beyond a pre-established area, and would let you know exactly where to find her if she did. Costs: $200 for a tracking device plus monthly service fees ranging between $43 and $80. Send your senior questions to: Savvy Senior, P.O. Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070, or visit SavvySenior.org. Jim Miller is a contributor to the NBC Today show and author of “The Savvy Senior” book.

The 40-70 RULE Time to Start Talking THE 40-70 RULE programs and emotional support services are offered to develop open discussions between families relating to providing care to parents and other various senior topics. Bridging the communication gap between adult children and their senior loved ones. The issues of aging often leave family caregivers speechless. That’s because all sorts of potentially difficult situations arise as adults age. What does a grown daughter say to her dad when he’s hit a light pole with the car? How does an adult son ask his mom if she’s taking her medications like she should? And how do siblings approach their parents about needing more help at home? These issues can challenge even the family where communication is free and open. And when that happens, it’s easier not to talk at all, which can lead to unresolved issues.

The “40-70 Rule” is based on original research conducted by Home Instead Senior Care, which discovered that nearly one-third of adults in the U.S. have a major communication obstacle with their parents that stems from continuation of the parent-child role. The fact that many seniors may still be dealing with their grown sons or daughters as if they’re children rather than adults makes these conversations particularly difficult. If you’re a Baby Boomer with aging parents, this informative 4070talk.com Web site is designed to help you start even the most difficult conversations with your senior loved ones, before a crisis has occurred and even after one already has happened.

An Ounce Of Precaution You always said you would take a trip overseas when the opportunity presented itself. Lo and behold, it has finally happened. But now that the time is right, you’re not so sure you’re ready. You’re getting up into your years. Relax. With some planning and precaution, you can go on the trip of a lifetime and have fun. The key to any trip is to start your planning early. Apply for a passport early if you don’t have one. Look for a tour company that specializes in tours for seniors. Once you know your destination, find out where the medical facilities are. Read up on the history, people, language, climate and culture of the places you will be visiting. The State Department publishes Consular Information Sheets on every country in the world. These sheets contain information on health conditions, crime and security conditions, drug penalties, unusual currency, entry regulations and unstable areas. They also issue travel warnings. Make arrangements in advance if you need a wheelchair or have a guide or any special seating needs. Check with Medicare to see if the country you are visiting has a reciprocal health care agreement (this means you will have access to emergency care). You will also be eligible for non-emergency health care if delaying medical attention until you return home is not a possibility. Discuss your travel plans with your doctor, especially if you have a history of medical problems. Find out what could happen with changes in your diet and eating habits and ask about staggering your medication to fit the different time zones if you have diabetes. Make sure you have all of the necessary vaccinations. Visit all other pertinent health care providers like your dentist or optometrist before you go. Take enough medication to last the whole trip and keep it in its original containers. Bring copies of your prescriptions and a letter from your doctor explaining why you need them. It is also a good idea to get a letter from your doctor if you are planning on carrying a large amount of over-the-counter medication. If you have a serious enough condition, you may want to wear a medical alert bracelet. If you wear glasses, bring an extra pair with you. Pack them and your medication in your carryon and your backup medications and another pair of glasses in your checked luggage. Before you leave, review your health insurance policy. If you are not covered for care abroad, get a policy that will cover you. Check with your travel agent for short term-policies designed specifically to cover traveling. Medicare doesn’t allow for payment of hospital or medical services outside the United States, but there are some supplemental reimbursement plans that offer no-cost foreign medical care PAGE 30

coverage for eligible Medicare treatments. You pay the bills, keep the receipts and then submit them for reimbursement. While flying long distances, be aware that you could experience deep vein thrombosis, the development of blood clots in the leg veins. To prevent this, wear loose clothing and elastic stockings, avoid drinking and smoking, drink plenty of water, sit with your legs uncrossed, walk in the aisles when possible and do leg and foot exercises. Be prepared for jet lag, and upon arrival at your destination, take it easy for a couple of days. If you have high blood pressure, respiratory problems, anemia or heart problems, pay particular attention to high altitudes and air pollution. If you tire easily, experience a shortness of breath or become dizzy, you could be having a reaction to the high altitude. Allow yourself time to get used to the altitude before engaging in any strenuous activity. While on your trip, eat light and don’t drink excessively. Drink only bottled water or water that has been boiled for at least 20 minutes. Ice cubes may not be made from purified water, so avoid them. Stay away from food buffets and street vendors. If you get a severe case of diarrhea that lasts for several days, consult a doctor. Older individuals are often considered easy targets for crime. Stay safe by leaving your valuables at home, including expensive jewelry, and getting the contact details of the nearest U.S. embassy. If you are in a country that doesn’t have a U.S. embassy, find out which country’s embassy will be available to help you. While on your trip, travel during the daytime and carry your belongings securely. Tuck a purse under your arm; don’t let it dangle by the strap. Carry your money in a money belt or pouch and your passport someplace else. Stash your passport numbers in a different location in case your passport gets lost or is stolen. If your passport does get stolen, report it immediately to the local police, get a copy of the report and contact the nearest U.S. embassy for a new one. In the event of serious injury while abroad, the U.S. consulate will help you find a doctor or other medical services. They will also contact your family and help you with a money transfer to pay for treatment. In the event of your death overseas, the consulate will contact your relatives in the United States and inform them of the requirements for shipping your body. The government will not pay for your remains to be shipped home. Preparing for a trip overseas sounds like a lot of work. While that may be true, you have worked all your life and deserve to go on that trip of a lifetime. Get that suitcase packed and prepare to board that plane.
