Frazee boys’ golf ready to make a push in 2010 The stars are potentially aligning for the Frazee boys’ golf team, which enters the 2010 season with much loftier expectations. First off, the Hornets return the Class 2A state‘s fourth-place golfer in sophomore Beau Hanson, and reigning Heart O’Lakes Conference champion. Secondly, Frazee has been bumped down to Class 1A, after competing in

Thirdly, depth and experience is strong overall for the Hornets. “We are really stressing the team aspect this season,” said Frazee head boys’ and girls’ golf coach John Olson. “I believe we have a shot as a team and now we don’t have to compete against the larger schools.” The Hornets will move into Section 6-1A, which has schools their own size, instead of having to have to compete against teams such as Detroit Lakes, Perham and Roseau. Instead, Section 6-1A includes smaller schools such as Lake ParkAudubon, Henning, Barnesville and Underwood — just to name a few. But playing against tough competition didn’t bother Hanson any, who won virtually every tournament he played in last year. He played well in the Class 2A state meet in Jordan last spring, finishing fourth overall.
This season, expectations are even higher for Hanson, who had a strong summer season. “As his confidence grows, he becomes a stronger and better golfer,” Olson said. “Nothing bothers him and his swing looks even better this year.” But Hanson won’t have to carry the team by himself, with junior Josh Kertscher returning as Frazee’s No. 2 man and also a returning letterwinner. Sophomore Zack Ziegler also had plenty of varsity experience in 2009 and also played all of last summer. “Zack struggled with his long game last season, but he has grown up and is driving the ball better,” Olson commented. Depth will be a strength, with juniors Tanner Ellenberg and Sam Kellerhuis each vying for top four spots. The Hornets also have a good number out in seventh and eighth grades to allow Frazee to have junior varsity and junior high schedules. For the Frazee girls’ team, numbers are low again, but will have four out. Kerria Robinson, Brianna Schepper, Jocelyn Giefer and Alexis Parsons will fill the Hornet’s roster this season. “We just haven’t been able to get the numbers out,” Olson said of the girls’ golf program. “It’s been this way for a long time now. There’s just not enough bodies.”

Young tracksters to learn on the job for Hornets BY BRIAN WIERIMA

With a talented and larger senior class graduating off of last year’s Frazee boys’ track and field team, the Hornets will be in sort of a rebuilding mode for the 2010 season. But there still will be experience and skilled athletes returning for the Hornets. “We lost a lot and will not be too deep this year,” said Frazee head coach Brian Tangen. “We may take some lumps (with only 17 out seventh through 12th grade), but we will be gaining experience along the way.” The sprints and throws will be the strength of the Frazee squad, with senior Clint Johnson leading the way in discus and shot put throws. Johnson will not be available until about May, due to a knee injury he suffered in basketball this past winter, though. Forrest Jackson will be replacing his brother, Skyler’s, production in the sprints. Jackson had a solid year in 2009, but was the third sprinter. This year, he takes over as one of the faster Hornets on the track. “He will be one of the top sprinters in each meet,” Tangen said. “I think he’s pretty excited because he won’t be sprinting behind two other sprinters on his own team. He’s definitely looking strong.”

Sophomore Dakota Zick was on the state 4x400 relay team from last year and will also be running sprints and mid-distance races. Cody Nordquist will also be a key
contributor in hurdles and sprints. Relays will not be as strong as last season, just because of the numbers issue, but Tangen is hoping to see some of his younger athletes step up and fill
holes in the lineup. “We won’t be able to fill every event, so that’s a downer (for the team score), but it does open up opportunities for our younger guys,” Tangen noted.
Lady Hornets have good mix of vets and rookies There is a good mixture of veteran and new energy on the Frazee girls’ track and field team. Senior Hannah Daggett returns after qualifying for state in the high jump the last two years, while fellow senior teammate Suzanne Vetter is back to anchor the distance crew. Daggett climbed to a height of 5-7 during last year’s section meet to earn her state berth. She will also be vying to qualify for state in the hurdles, as well, this season. “Her goal is to get back to state and earn a placing there,” said Frazee girls’ track coach Jim Jacobson. “She is improving in hurdles and her times are getting better.” Eighth graders Jessica Reishus and Ali Bachmann will join Vetter in the distance races, while freshman Chelsey Sanders is working hard to improve in the discus and shot put events. McKinzie Tangen also will be a 100-meter hurdler and will compete in the triple jump and sprinting events. The depth in sprints will be strong, so the 4x100 and 4x200 teams will be highly competitive during meets. Inexperienced athletes will fill the triple and long jumping events, while Vetter will compete on pole vault throughout the schedule. Overall, Jacobson sees the Hornets being competitive as a team through the season. “We might not have those top places, but we should be able to have multiple finishers in the top five or six spots,” the Frazee coach commented.

Pitching depth could be a key factor for the Detroit Lakes baseball team, since the Lakers will have two quality starters at the top of the rotation. Seniors Brock Johnson and Alex Guetter, a lefty, will anchor the Laker pitching staff, with each coming off of an impressive season in 2009. But who pitches behind the two hurlers will be important to DL’s success, as well. “Going into the season, pitching is going to be our strong point,” said DL head coach Steve Fuhs. “The key is, both Brock and Alex have more than one pitch to rely on and both threw strikes last year. “But we need four to five starters and after those two, we don’t have a lot of pitchers with experience.” Johnson possesses an overpowering fastball, as well as an effective slider and changeup.
Guetter has good control and a curve as an out pitch. But more importantly, both throw strikes. Seniors Brett Provo and T.J. Manning have some innings and they will get their chances on the mound early on in the season, as will Andy Fondrick. Junior Ben Lindquist showed some good stuff in 2009 and also adds a left arm to the pitching staff. Jordan Manning and Nate Baker also have good experience on the mound, but on the B-team level. “(Junior) Connor McLeod also saw a few innings, as well,” Fuhs said. “But we will need everyone sometime during the season. I’d like to have up to eight pitchers and the talent is there.” For the first time in a long time, DL will also be very inexperienced at the catching position. There is very little varsity experience behind the plate, with sophomore

Lakers to rely on seasoned players for success Having a four-year starter on the mound should give the Detroit Lakes softball team a leg up in 2010. Senior Callea Butz returns for her fourth year of starting duty on the mound, giving the Lakers a consistent hurler to hopefully key a deep section playoff run. “Callea threw the majority of innings last year and she is improving every year,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. “She has sound mechanics, as well as a good fastball, changeup and riser. “The big goal this year is her location.” Butz had several games of posting 12 or more strikeouts, but that won’t necessarily be the biggest part of her game. “She won’t blow people away with her fastball, but she has good control and finding her location during certain parts in the count will be important,” the DL coach said. Senior Cady Cartmell will also provide solid depth behind Butz. “Cady has good speed on her pitches and a good changeup,” Kirchner said. “We can throw Cady and Callea every other game if we need to.” The Lakers also have experience back behind the plate in sophomore Brianna Seebold, who caught the majority of games in 2009. “Her arm is an asset and she’s just a
good athlete,” Kirchner said. “She has figured out the game as a sophomore and will be in charge of the field.” Sophomore Jenna Lamb will back up Seebold. At first base, Cartmell will see some action, as will sophomores Amanda Young, Courtney Maneval and Lauren Johnson, and freshman Sadie Larson. “All those girls will be seeing time at either first or third base,” Kirchner said. “We are pretty green at both positions.” But DL will be strong up the middle, with Seebold at catcher and seniors Donna Wicker and Shayna Dugger at second base and shortstop, respectively. “Donna is a solid defensive player and has a good bat, and second-year player Shayna Dugger has a big stick and a good fielder,” their coach said. In the outfield, senior Jalen Even will take on center field duties, while

This is the season where the Detroit Lakes boys’ tennis team has been building to, with seven returning players, along with a good amount of skill and talent. To go with that, the Lakers have also been bumped down to the smaller Class 1A, where they will be competing against schools more their size. “The guys have some higher expectations,” said first-year head coach Wade Johnson. “We’ll still be the underdogs, but we have some good experience back to be competitive.” The Laker’s lineup will be deep, with eight seniors on the roster. One of those seniors, Jake Hartman, returns as a threeyear starter and will hold down DL’s No. 1 singles position. DL also has gained extra talent from foreign exchange student Thieris Galdino of Brazil, who will be a contender for the No. 2 slot. Senior Tanner Duncan brings some good athleticism to the lineup, in which Johnson will be able to mix and match to fill his doubles teams. Other experience players coming back include juniors Isaac Fondrick, Jesse Meyer, Garret Duncan, Collin Harris, Levi Nordine and seniors Chad Hanson and Keith Thornby. Johnson added senior David Jonason as a “promising newcomer”, as well.

Section snuff from 2009 motivating Laker boys’ golf There is still a bad taste lingering in the mouths of the Detroit Lakes boys’ golf teams after falling short of the Section 8-2A title last year. But it’s that meet which will provide solid motivation for the 2010 season, as the Lakers boast a deep lineup with up to eight to 10 players vying for the top six varsity spots. “We have very good competition on the team who will be playing in the top six for our meets,” said DL head coach Bob Gorden. “We do have an aggressive schedule once again, and each week we’ll have some top competition to fill the top six for meets.” The Lakers will be without one of their top golfers in junior Tanner Lane, who suffered a shoulder injury in DL’s Section 6-1A hockey playoff game. Lane had surgery on his shoulder, but Gorden is hoping he can get him back by May, so he can get his three meets in and be able to play in the section meet. “Hopefully Tanner will be hitting balls by May, until then he can work on his short game and putting,” Gorden said. “But it also opens up an opportunity for someone else to contribute, as well.” The Lakers will be led into the season by seniors Nate Ginnaty and Ross Mickelson, along with five other letter winners from a year ago — including Lane. Junior Connor Hedstrom returns, as do sophomores Rick Hutchinson and Tyler Baukol. Freshmen Karter Smith and Austin Rusness each were key contributors last season, as well. Others who will be vying for varsity spots include se-
nior Joe Hanson; juniors Brady Eilertson and Eric Hanson; sophomores Nate Bausman and Brian Clark; freshman Ian Fritz; and eighth grader Michael Herzog. There will also be up to 13 other junior varsity players trying out this spring, as well. With a tough schedule on the horizon — which includes the University of Minnesota Tri-State Meet, April 23-24 — Gorden hopes to gear his team up for another section run. “I think we all have a lump in our stomachs from last year’s section meet,” Gorden said. “But we can only control ourselves and our games. I did see this group get a lot better after playing a lot last summer, so I think they can follow up with some better results.” Some improvements which the Lakers will need to incur include hitting more fairways and becoming better putters. “If we can take care of those two things, results will follow,” Gorden said. Last year’s experience will also be key, even though DL is still pretty young, with only three seniors and four juniors out. “Last year, we had some pretty good players who were green, but this season they are expecting more out of themselves,” the DL coach stated. A new rule has been added allowing coaches to coach on the course during meets, just not when a golfer is in the bunker or on the green. Also, coaches will not be allowed to play during a meet.

There could be some sneaking up on opponents this season for the Detroit Lakes girls’ golf team. On paper, it may look like a rebuilding year, with no seniors or juniors on the team. But there is experience and talent nonetheless. “I think there is a lot of potential on the team,” said DL head coach Jen Hendrickson. “It may look like a rebuilding type of year, but I think we’ll be pretty competitive.” The Lakers do have some seasoning back in eighth graders Maddie Tschider (who
missed state last year by three strokes) and Trisa Hutchinson, along with sophomores Courtney Hedstrom and Ashley Friesen. Others who will be vying for starting spots include eighth graders Natalie Roth and Emma Thompson and seventh grader Sidney Busker. “We have a huge number of middle school golfers (30) out too,” Hendrickson added. “Age-wise, we are very young, but they do have some experience and I’m impressed with how much they went out and played last summer.” With very little pressure on the team, Hendrickson wants to see improvement, but also
wants the girls to have fun at meets and enjoy the season. “The girls are not feeling the pressure, but they are excited and still want to be competitive in the tournaments,” the DL coach said. “There will be some good opportunities for them against some good competition. “The fire is still in them.” The Lakers will host their invite at the Detroit Country Club May 25, while the SubSection meet is May 27 at Wildflower. The Section 8-2A meet will be held at Longbow Golf Course in Walker, June 1, while the state event is in Jordan, June 16-17.

Junior Bre Halbur returns off an injury-plagued 2009 season and will anchor the long jump event and possibly help out in the hurdles. Halbur won the tough Section 8-2A long jump title two years ago, while taking third last season, despite having a bad ankle. “If Bre can stay healthy, she is a phenomenal athlete,” Labine said. “We don’t know if she can hurdle yet, but she should be able to have a strong season in the long jump.” Gymnasts Amy Crawford, Jess Stelter, Natalie Hoffert and Kyley Foster also will play important roles on the team. Stelter is DL’s top hurdler and a strong jumper, while Crawford is the Laker’s best pole vaulter. “Amy saw big success on pole vault at the end of last year and there’s no question she’s a great athlete,” Labine said of Crawford, who won DL’s first-ever gymnastics championship after taking the Class 1A beam title. “Natalie Hoffert is one of our top sprinters, as well.” The Lakers also return senior Kayla Lang, who had as strong offseason working on the high jump. “Every year, Kayla has been around the 4-10 to 5-0 range in
the high jump and after how hard she worked this winter, I see her hitting that early on in the season,” Labine said. “She can become a top-notch high jumper.” Senior Lauren Kauffman will also be a big factor in the high jump. Senior Bethany Stoltenburg will anchor the throwing events, after learning under state qualifier Ally Nielsen from a year ago. Junior Jen Matter will also join Stoltenburg in the disc and shot put after missing last season with a knee injury. Freshman Rose Jackson emerged in the sprints for the Lakers last season and with a full season of experience, she should only be better this time around, Labine said. In distance, sheer numbers will improve the 800 through 3,200 meter running events. “Our quality is better than we’ve had in a long time on our distance crew,” Labine said. Junior Marie Yokan and Abby Ullyott each will lead the way in distance, with up to a dozen others filling in the rest. “We have options now there and having that flexibility will only make the team better,” the DL coach stated.
The expectations are higher for this year’s squad, but the road is tougher to the state True Team, after 13-time section champion Sartell has been added to Section 8. “We also have teams like Staples-Motley and East Grand Forks in there and these are not your one-and-done type of teams, they are traditionally good every year,” Labine said. “And that’s where we want to get back to.” The Lakers will not have any home meets, with the track at Mollberg Field soon to go under a complete renovation. But with the new track, the Lakers will have a good possibility to hosting such larger events as the Section 8-2A Section preliminaries and finals and True Team events. The Lakers also have a solid core of coaches, including Labine, Steve Zamzo (boys’ head coach), John Freeman, Bill Kvebak, Lisa Conzemius, Maggie Doll, Ryan Zunich and Pete Paulson (the last three are all volunteers). “It’s huge to have all these coaches helping out, especially with the high number of kids out,” Labine added.

Eighth grader Isaiah Pearson has shown a good work ethic in the offseason to improve his game, making him a solid No. 2 golfer in the Raider lineup this season, as well. “We’ll have four other golfers rotating in and out of the top six,” said LP-A head boys’ golf coach Nicole Seyfried. “We’re looking to have a better ranking in the conference.” The Raiders also will have Bo Svodbodny, Eric Zachariason and Elijah Bodine in the mix as LP-A’s top six golfers. The goal this year is to
eliminate mistakes and stay out of trouble leading to highscoring holes. “This year, coaches can coach during the meet, so that will be big,” Seyfried said. “In previous seasons, the guys would get into lots of trouble on holes, so I’ll be out there helping them make better decisions out there.” Seyfried is hoping for a middle of the pack finish in the conference, so consistency will be a key factor this year. The Lake Park-Audubon girls’ golf team has its full roster back from the 2009 squad, which sent three golfers to the section meet. But the only returning section golfer will be junior Autumn Ricke, who will lead a seasoned team in the 2010 season. Depth is good, as a slate is back after seeing varsity time on the links in 2009. “We have our full varsity team back,” said LP-A head girls’ golf coach Marge Beudine. “Our goal is to hit in the middle of the Heart O’Lakes Conference, so consistency will be key.” Returning with varsity experience includes Jessica Halverson, Maria Veit, Jessica Larson, Ricke and Cindy Schiffler.
There will be some good competition to fill the six varsity slots in practice. Another advantage this season will be the fact that Beudine can coach the players during a meet. “We’ll be busy as coaches now, but it’s good to be able to help the players out during meets now,” Beudine said. “We’ll be able to answer some questions and be like a PGA caddy for them.” The Raiders will host an HOL meet May 3, at their home course of Forest Hills Golf Course.

Raider baseball team to be senior-laden With some good experience and talent coming back for the 2010 season, the Lake Park-Audubon baseball team is confidently looking to surpass their four-win mark from a season ago. The Raiders will be strong in some vitals areas, including pitching, catching and just the overall defense. The potential improvement will be led by first-year head coach Brandon Olson, who is a 2000 Detroit Lakes graduate. “Our defense should be a strong point this season,” Olson said. “As a group, they are here to win and be competitive.” The Raiders will be seniorladen, with 11 upperclassmen out — and most of them have been playing varsity since LP-A picked baseball up again over five years ago. Jesse Wixo will be one of the most experienced players back and will run the pitching staff from the catching position. He will have some seasoned hurlers to catch, with senior Tyler Mickelson being LP-A’s
ace, followed by senior Chad Dehler. Senior Caleb Lunde will anchor the bullpen, while seniors Jake Lunde and Dan Binde will provide solid depth on the mound. “Most of these guys are third-year varsity players, too,” Olson added. Defensively, the Raiders will be seasoned. Caleb Lunde returns at shortstop and has the ability to twist the double plays, while Binde will hold down the second base position, along with sophomore Wyatt Wixo. Dehler will man the hot corner at third, making the infield as solid as it has been in LP-A yet. The outfield will also be athletic and quick, with Jake Lunde anchoring it in centerfield, with Wyatt Wixo taking either right or left field positions. “We’ll still need a few games to see where everything plays out,” Olson added. “But these guys have expectations to be above the .500 mark this year.” The Raiders also will be playing in the Pine to Prairie Conference for the first time.

New beginnings to be had for LP-A softball squad and seventh grader Cheyanne Nelson. “Carissa has a different pitching style than Christine, which will help,” the LP-A coach said. “Maegan Anderson is in ninth grade and I am looking forward to her future leadership.” Junior Chelsey Raaen returns as the Raider’s catcher, who also brings plenty of experience. Blickenstaff also will have to see how the team’s offense will respond to varsity pitching, since many haven’t hit on that level yet. “We’ll have to wait and see until we play some games,” Blickenstaff added about her offensive lineup. The Raiders will play a Pine to Prairie Conference schedule, which includes games against Norman County East, Bagley, Fertile-Beltrami, Norman County East and Fosston. Blickenstaff’s assistant coaches this season are Bob Soukup and Tiffany Nagel.

The 2010 season will be a fresh new start for the Lake Park-Audubon softball team. The Raiders will be starting in a new conference — the Pine to Prairie — along with a new head coach and a slew of new players. But LP-A will still look to put out a competitive team under new head coach Bobbi Blickenstaff. “We do not have many players with years of experience, but I do have players willing to learn and work hard,” Blickenstaff said. “I have girls who want to play and who want to learn. Getting to know the team has been very positive; the girls have incredible work-ethic attitudes.” The most seasoned player for the Raiders happens to be a pitcher in senior Christine McIntire. “Christine has the most experience, so I am looking forward to her leadership,” Blickenstaff said. Although numbers will be short for the Lake Park-Audubon boys’ and girls’ track and field teams, the Raiders will still be strong in several events for the 2010 season. The Raider boys will be strong in the sprints and field events, while the girls will compete well in the distance. The boys’ team has several athletes who also play baseball, but will be able to compete in six meets which does not conflict with the diamond schedule. Seniors Jesse Wixo and Joe Anderson each are key components on the baseball team, but will also anchor the Raider track squad. Wixo qualified for sections last year in the triple and long jumps, while Anderson will anchor the discus and shot put throws. Sophomore Wyatt Wixo, who also is a baseball player, will be a contender in sprints and throws, while sophomore Greg Olson will fill the third slot in discus and shot put. Sophomore Chase Zeller will also throw the discus and compete in the high jump. The Raider girls will be strong in the 4x800 relay, with a bevy of returning distance runners. The 4x800 will consist of juniors Ashley Thompson, Caitlyn Wavra, along with eighth grader Rebecca Schermer and senior Nora Ulmer. “They will be strong after making the section last year,” said LP-A track coach Lori Wixo. Schermer will also fill the 800 event, while eighth grader Ashlyn Strom and senior Nicole Warling will run the 3,200 and 1,600-meter events. Sophomore Rachel Carlson had a strong season in the sprints in 2009 and will compete in each of the 100, 200 and 400 races, along with freshman Brittany Rislund. Senior Kjerstin Swenson will be back in the triple jump, as well. There are 20 Raider girls out, which includes a dozen seventh and eighth graders.
