SEPTEMBER Take on a triathlon Families or groups of friends who are interested in competing in a number of physically challenging events should mark their calendars for August 18 and 19. The Young Life Triathlon offers biking, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding and running. Friday will bring more family-friendly activities--the Rock the Beach 5k, Kids Run and Family Fun Fest--to the lakes area, with opportunities for young and old to get active. Children at the Kids Run will run a 1K (0.62 mi) around City Park in Detroit Lakes and, at the end of the race, they’ll receive a medal and a healthy snack. Family Fun Fest, which runs throughout the day, will provide families with games, face painting, souvenir photos and fun inflatable games. Saturday morning, though, is when the hard work begins. There are two separate triathlon courses offered for those participating: the Long Course and the Sprint Course. For more advanced competitors, the Long Course may be the best challenge--physically and mentally. The course consists of a 1.5 kilometer swim (0.93mi) in Detroit Lake, a 40 kilometer (24.85mi) hilly bike ride through scenic Lakes Country and a 10 kilometer (6.21mi) run out to Dunton Locks Park and back on the gorgeous Pelican Lake Trail. The Sprint Course, designed with less advanced participants in mind, includes a 500 (0.3mi) meter swim, a 20k (12.42) bike ride and a 5k (3.1mi) run. There are options to compete as an individual or on a relay team. After the competition, participants are encouraged to stick around for a free lunch. 8 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2017

MENTAL HEALTH

MATTERS

HOW TO STAY EMOTIONALLY HEALTHY THIS SCHOOL YEAR STORY BY: MEAGAN PITTELKO | PHOTO BY: HEY PAUL STUDIOS/CREATIVE COMMONS

A

s the days of summer draw to an end, signs of transitions are all around us--stores begin stocking colored pencils and glittery tubes of glue, bedtimes become a little stricter and life gets a bit more routine. Despite the excitement that comes with transitions, though, an equal amount of anxiety, fear and other confusing emotions can tag along, too. Anna Sellin, Assistant Director at Lakes Crisis and Resource Center (LCRC), and Julie Smith, LCRC mental health professional, have some tips for parents, children and young adults to help maintain a level of mental and emotional health this school year.

FIND A ROUTINE THAT WORKS FOR YOU Whether you’re a parent working to help your family transition back into a school-friendly schedule or a young adult heading to college, Sellin and Smith agreed that finding a routine is crucial to an individual’s mental health. “Think ahead and prepare things that can be prepared,” Smith said. “You need to plan, but know that there’s flexibility in those plans.” She added that it’s important to know what your main goals are. For example, your main goal might be to sit down for supper as a family--but it’s important to understand that that won’t always mean you’ll be eating a home-cooked, fourcourse meal, she said. Sellin explained that thinking ahead and planning out designated homework spaces can also help to ease anxiety. “The more structure you have in your routine,” Sellin said, “the more crisis you can take.” 18 | SUMMER SCENE | AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2017

DON’T OVERSCHEDULE YOUR DAY Everyone knows that family--you might even be that family--that is involved in four different activities or sports each night. However, for parents and kids alike, spending evenings running from soccer practice to dance lessons to Boy or Girl Scouts can be more of a detriment than a benefit. “It’s difficult,” Sellin said, “but we’d encourage you to try not to overschedule. Kids don’t have to be in every sport and music and orchestra. Life shouldn’t be all about your achievements and your scores, but more about being a

good person.” As young adults approach college, Smith said, it can be hard to adjust to campus life when all they’ve ever known is a basketball court. “It’s important to show your kids that there are more opportunities out there,” she explained. “Expose them to new things--in a gentle way--to lessen the stress caused by that pressure and to allow them to be more well-rounded.” For those already in college, the sentiment is the same: try not to cram too much into your day, and allow yourself to have time to breathe. DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

MAINTAIN OPEN COMMUNICATION “Lots of things can be triggered by the start of a new school year,” Smith said. “Summer can actually be a relief from things that make kids not want to go to school--like bullying--and those things create depression and anxiety, so there can be a spike when it’s time to go back to school.” As each new school year brings new-or returning--sets of challenges into a child’s life, Smith recommended that parents keep the lines of communication open--with children, teachers, counselors and any other support systems in their lives. “Reach out to your supports, whether they’re formal or informal,” she said. “Touch base with the school. Identify feelings with your children and talk about those feelings.” Sellin agreed wholeheartedly. “Be open,” she said. “Don’t be afraid to reach out to other parents. If you start seeing new behaviors in your child, don’t be afraid to get to the bottom of it--just continue to keep those lines of communication as open as possible.” For non-parents, open lines of communication are just as important. Whether it’s communicating with professors or reaching out to parents, friends or counselors, there’s one idea that’s important across the board: “Stay open to asking for and accepting help,” Sellin said.

LIMIT SCREEN TIME--AND SOCIAL MEDIA COMPARISONS “Comparison,” Smith said, sighing. “It’s the thief of joy.” From Facebook to Twitter to Instagram, technology and social media have bred an age that is--arguably--more concentrated in comparison than any other. “Sometimes, even as adults, we get on Facebook and think, ‘Wow, they have a great life,’ but most of us can identify that that’s just a highlight of their life,” Smith said. “Kids have a hard time with the cognition of it, though, and think, ‘This is what their life is like. Why isn’t my life like that?’ So, we have to talk to kids about it and say, ‘They were probably tired and crabby, and they were probably fighting with their siblings right before DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

that selfie was taken.’ It’s important because we’re real and raw and that’s what happens.” Sellin explained that, for parents, it’s also important to be “friends” with your children on Facebook or to have their passwords for social media sites. “Focus on preventative steps and sets boundaries,” she said. ‘If they’re going to be on social media, know what they’re doing and know who their friends are.” In addition to the complexities of parenting children--and simply of living--in a social media-driven world, limiting screen time in general can help improve mental and emotional health. “Have a time where the phone doesn’t go into a child’s room after a certain time,” Smith said. “They can keep going and going and going, and sleep deprivation is something that can be so detrimental to the mental health of kids.”

KNOW YOUR RESOURCES When all is said and done--no matter how many preventative steps you take-stressful situations are bound to arise. “There will always be tough times throughout the day,” Smith said. “Sometimes, you just have to ground yourself--try talking about what you’re grateful for or having a conversation about what’s real.” Both Sellin and Smith agreed that there are a wealth of formal and informal resources in each individual’s life--it just comes down to knowing that they’re there and understanding how to use them. “It could be a spiritual leader, a friend, a counselor or just someone you really trust,” Sellin said. “And, if you aren’t equipped to deal with it on your own, don’t think that you’re not enough.” In Detroit Lakes, there are a variety of resources available to families or individuals struggling with mental health issues.
