PREPARING FOR THE

PARULA

HOW TINY BIRDS BRING BIG CROWDS TO TAMARAC

S

pring brings a bounty of visitors to the Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge, and soon it will seem the forest itself is vibrating with life. While there are many exciting spring arrivals, Tamarac is particularly known for the spectacular array of migratory bird species it welcomes each May. The range of habitats found on the refuge, is predominantly responsible for this impressive level of diversity. Many of the people who visit Tamarac are attracted by the opportunity to observe a few of DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS

the 258 winged species found here. A crowd favorite with birders are often the warblers, with over 28 different types expected to pass through the refuge, it is easy to see why. Warblers are among the smallest birds on this continent, yet they have some of the longest migrations. These colorful creatures spend their winters, like many of us, as far south as Mexico and the West Indies. Once these little birds head our way, the skies will ring with their songs. Sounds of warbler calls

in the air are a sign for many that spring has finally sprung! The northern parula (Setophaga americana), are among the smallest wood warblers we can anticipate seeing this spring. At barely 4.5 inches long they could easily be overlooked. Catching a glimpse of this warbler requires a bit of preparation. Parulas are one of about 13 warblers that are known to nest at Tamarac, and their nesting sites are one of the most interesting things about them. SUMMER SCENE | MAY 2017 | 17

The northern parula prefers to nest in clumps of Usnea lichen (aka beard lichen). They will create a small side door and hollow out a cup as their nest. For additional lining, parulas can be seen collecting materials such as hair, grass, and pine needles. To be sure you don’t miss out on sighting the smallest of the small, the best places to look for nesting spots are along the edges of streams, lakes, or swamps in coniferous and deciduous forests, where plenty of tree lichen can be found high in the canopy. The next time you are on the refuge, scout out several spots with tree lichen by the lakeside in preparation for the lovely parula’s arrival!

The forest is awake

TAMARAC WILDLIFE REFUGE ‘SPRINGS’ INTO ACTION

A

waken your soul with a symphony of color and sound as Tamarac National Wildlife Refuge comes to life. Listen to the songs of birds as they prepare to nest. Walk along the trails and inhale the scent of spring wildflowers. Experience Tamarac and capture those memories during this ephemeral time of year.

Wildlife Watching Here at Tamarac, wildlife is left undisturbed as they perform the mating rituals of spring. Portions of the refuge are closed to the public during this crucial time, but many viewing opportunities still exist. The most optimum times for viewing wildlife occur around sunrise and sunset. But sometimes even an afternoon visit can be rewarding to the quiet, watchful observer. To increase your chances of seeing wildlife, take a journey on the Blackbird Wildlife Drive. This five mile drive follows the edges of lakes, marshes and meadows. If you feel inclined to exercise, hike the 2 mile long Old Indian Hiking Trail and experience the beauty of the maple basswood forest. Another option is to venture out on the North Country Trail which traverses 14 miles through the southern half of the refuge.

Fishing Try your luck in one of our five lakes 22 | SUMMER SCENE | MAY 2017

open to fishing. There are many varieties of fish to be caught including crappie, walleye, sunfish, northern pike and bass. A fishing map and regulations can be obtained at the information kiosks located at refuge entrances.

Visitor Center If you’ve got questions, our enthusiastic staff has answers! We are eager to help you make the most of your visit. Check out our interactive exhibits and learn about the diverse habitats which support Tamarac’s many species of wildlife. Learn about the historical use of the refuge including that of the Ojibwe Indians and the European settlers. Be sure to view our large screen presentation entitled: “Tamarac: Its Life and Legends.” Before you leave, browse in the Tamarac Bookshop. Proceeds from sales support educational programs at the refuge. The visitor center is located 9 miles north of Hwy 34. Visitor center hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Planting seeds for a healthier lifestyle

H

erbs--basil and oregano, to be precise--will unite the community this spring as the One Vegetable, One Community initiative’s 2017 Vegetable of the Year. The program aims to bring the community together through conversation about food and, according to the One Vegetable, One Community webpage, it all began with the following question: “How can we increase access to fresh, healthy food for everyone in our community?” This year, Essentia Health St. Mary’s in Detroit Lakes and the University of Minnesota Extension Office have paired up to introduce the community to the power of herbs in cooking and are offering packets containing basil and oregano seeds to anyone who would like to 28 | SUMMER SCENE | MAY 2017

participate. The packets include growing instructions and recipe ideas and are available for pick-up at the library, the Chamber of Commerce, the Community & Cultural Center or Essentia Health Guest Services. “Our hope is to get the community involved in healthier eating,” said Marsha Parker, a dietician at Essentia Health who helps coordinate the project. “This is our fourth year, and we picked herbs this year because we’re really trying to focus on reducing the amount of sodium we use.” There will be 700 packets available for pick-up (first-come, first-serve) this year, compared to the 500 packets that were available the first year. The seeds were donated through Essentia Health and the Statewide Health Improvement

Partnership (SHIP) and packets were assembled by volunteers. Over the course of the last three years, One Vegetable, One Community has featured kale, beets and a variety of beans in their packets. Throughout the summer, educational sessions regarding herbs and healthy living will be held at the Boys and Girls Club in Detroit Lakes; however, dates have not been announced yet. “There’s a lot of collaboration that happens, and there are other communities throughout the state that are doing this,” Parker said. “It’s about focusing on local foods, vegetables and produce and getting everyone excited about it. The idea behind this is truly to focus in on healthier eating and get the whole community involved.” DETROIT LAKES NEWSPAPERS
