he city of Perham is located within 60 miles of over 1,000 lakes, making it the center of tourist activity. In Perham, “weekends begin on Wednesdays.” Perham is the center for surrounding agriculture and tourism in East Otter Tail County. You’ll find plenty of restaurants, bars, antique shops, gift shops, and grocery stores. Beautiful Little Pine and Big Pine Lakes are just north of Perham. Perham Lakeside Country Club borders Little Pine Lake and offers 27 holes of championship golf. Recreation isn’t limited to summer – there are 130 miles of snowmobile trails near the town. The specialty shops located on the downtown cobblestone streets and the Highway 78 corridor offer a unique “small town” shopping experience.

For decades, the Turtle Festival has been one of the highlights of the summer for the Perham area. The event is geared toward family entertainment. Vendors in the streets, performers and entertainers, a parade, a kiddie tractor pull, and sidewalk sales attract thousands to Perham every June. Hop a ride on the Perham Chamber of Commerce “Perham Express” locomotive for a tour of the town. This year’s Turtle Fest will be held June 16-20. Four days of turtle races are featured, Wednesday through Saturday; with a Champion of Champions race on Saturday, featuring winners from all four days. Summer 2010 will be Perham’s 33rd year of International Turtle Races. Join in the fun every Wednesday RAIN OR SHINE, June through August, at 10:30 a.m. in the City Hall Park. The Information Center is located near the races.

Perham has a state-of-theart community fitness and recreation center, offering equipment and activities suited for the entire family. The Perham Area Community Center is a 66,000 square foot facility that houses a beautiful pool area with a 130-foot water slide, an elevated walking track, racquetball courts, three full-size gyms, a complete weight and fitness area, and much more.

he 14th annual Turtle Fest Road Race run is June 19, 2010. Registration race day starts at 7:45 a.m. and the race starts at 9 a.m. The number of runners has averaged about 247 entrants--who run a beautiful route near the Pine Lake chain and the Lakeside Golf Course. The event is held on a runner friendly course on asphalt and a bike path. The race is listed online at www.raceberryjam.com and is also listed on the MN Distance Running Association Race Schedule calendar. The first three male and female runners in the 10K and 5K run receive special awards. In the 5K walk, the first two male and female walkers also receive special awards. In the 5K and 10K runs, masters runners are recognized. The first place male and female runners in 4049; 50-59; 60-69; and 70 plus will receive special awards.

It’s a fair “free-for-all” in Perham July 22-25. For the 2009 fair, the admission fee was eliminated, and it was a big success. So, in 2010, the fair is free for everybody! The East Otter Tail County Fair is a traditional county fair, complete with livestock barns, 4-H exhibits, and commerce/industry booths. The midway is a kaleidoscope of color with modern carnival rides and games.

he Perham Heritage Festival brings history alive every year. Look for events such as corn shelling, a flea market, log sawing, antique cars, a black powder shoot, and musical performances. Black Powder Rendezvous runs at the same time both days, adjacent to Pioneer Village. The Lake Country Mountaineers have hosted the rendezvous for a quarter century. Black powder enthusiasts from throughout the region will be on hand, and there’s lots to see, including an extensive shooting range where black powder weapons are demonstrated.

uilt originally as an Episcopal church, this historic building now contains displays and exhibits about the people and places of East Otter Tail County. At the History Museum the past comes alive with early motion pictures, photographic essays and interpretive exhibits.

IN THEIR OWN WORDS… A VETERANS MUSEUM brings wartime history to life--in the battlefield and on the home front
T
he In Their Own Words Veterans Museum opened in Perham in 2006. Several years in the making, the museum features first-hand experiences of area veterans in Europe, Korea, Vietnam, and the Middle East. It also includes exhibits from World War I through the current conflicts in the Middle East. Featuring audio commentaries, re-dramatizations of events leading up to and during the wars of the 20th Century, and interactive identity kiosks, ITOW is believed to be the only museum of its kind. Excerpts from over 140 oral histories are included. In addition to the exhibits about veterans, there are also displays about the home front. The museum hosts frequent special events such as lectures and music. ITOW is housed in a renovated VFW Post headquarters at 805 West Main in Perham. LAKESIDE city
ttertail city is located on the eastern shores of Otter Tail Lake on Highways 78 and 108. It is one of the fastest growing communities in rural Minnesota. The lake is the 10th largest in the state, and supports several recreational endeavors. As seasonal visitors become permanent residents, businesses flourish.
Ottertail is the perfect home base for golfers, with championship courses in the heart of town, south at Balmoral, and north in Perham. At Thumper Pond Golf Course and Resort you’ll find the new 12,000 square foot Northern Hideaway Indoor Waterpark, featuring a 3-story tower with two slides that twist and turn outside the waterpark.
Recent years have seen the opening of clinics, banks, and many other businesses to serve the growing community. A law enforcement center was recently constructed to provide a County Sheriff ’s substation for the entire eastern portion of the county.
One of the city’s most prominent landmarks is the giant otter statue. The city’s “pet” otter is a 10-foothigh, 14-foot long creation from 1,200 pieces of welded steel. Hidden inside the critter is a time capsule containing community information and photos.

very summer thousands of people flock to the small town of Ottertail for the annual Smokin’ Iron Truck and Tractor Pull. The two-day event is hosted in the city’s center, on a track located behind the water tower off of Highway 108. This year’s 8th annual Smokin’ Iron event will be held on Friday, June 18 and Saturday, June 19. The pulls begin at 7:00 p.m. each night, with the gates opening at 4 p.m. on Friday and at noon on Saturday. There are now over 80 pullers who travel from across the nation to participate in the widely recognized event. Pullers compete for some of the more than $50,000 in prize money awarded each year. Vendors are also present for the event, and games are set up for kids— making the tractor pull an exciting event the whole family can enjoy. ttertail hosts one of the biggest, small-town parades in the region—set August 14 in 2010. The annual Otter Fest Parade is set to coincide with a day full of community-wide activities. Local vendors set up their wares on the streets of Ottertail and musicians play into the night. There are kids games, turtle races, and plenty of food to please the crowd. As soon as the sun fades, fireworks light up the night sky.

ver the past year, a local ministry has taken on the task of restoring the landmark Ottertail Creamery building. Located at the corner of Main Street (Highway 108) and Maple Avenue, the brick building serves as a welcoming landmark in the old portion of Ottertail city.

On Friday evening, August 13, the Ottertail Rod and Gun Club hosts the annual demolition derby. Hundreds of spectators fill the derby area near the Ottertail water tower, off of Highway 108. The derby is the official kick-off for the city’s summer celebration.
Built in 1927, the old creamery building has housed a variety of local businesses throughout its decades in the community. Several new retail shops, a coffee shop, and a secondfloor church meeting space are now housed in the creamery—transforming it into a community hub. One of the highlights of the reclaimed structure is a new observation tower, which was constructed on the south side of the building. From the top of the tower, visitors can take in many of the sights the small city has to offer—including a view of seven area lakes.

ew York Mills is a welcoming community located near the heart of lakes country, home to industry, art and culture. This small town is known nationally for big things such as the birthplace and home of Lund Boats, The Great American Think-Off, and most recently the Ronald McDonald House Benefit Motorcycle Ride. In 1947, Howard Lund built his first metal boat in a local garage. From that early beginning the Lund Boat Co. grew and became the area’s largest employer, producing the “world’s finest fishing boat.” Each year on the second Saturday of June, New York Mills draws about 1,000 motorcycles to participate in what has simply become known as “The Ride.” This annual motorcycle rally and ride raises funds for the Ronald McDonald House in Fargo.

Nationally known as the home of The Great American Think-Off, the New York Mills Regional Cultural Center offers an astounding arrary of gallery exhibits, musical entertainment, and art workshops throughout the year. he Lund Mania Fishing Tournament will be held July 2 near New York Mills. Following the tournament, the top 10 teams will participate in the annual New York Mills community parade to be held that evening. The tournament winners will be announced at the conclusion of the parade in front of Central Park. The annual street dance will follow the parade and fishing tournament awards ceremony.

This is the second year the Lund Mania Fishing Tournament will coincide with the annual parade and street dance, which traditionally draw hundreds to downtown New York Mills for the summer festivities.

he New York Mills Regional Cultural Center is a place to experience big-time arts and culture in small-town Minnesota. Best known for hosting the “Great American Think-Off,” an annual common man’s philosophy debate, the cultural center is much more than the nationally recognized debate of armchair philosophers. Each year the center brings to the region a wide variety of artistic culture generally not found in rural Minnesota. The cultural center is a great place to attend one of the many concerts featuring a host of talented musicians. Inside the gallery visitors can find a wide variety of art exhibits, discussion groups, workshops and art classes throughout the year. The center seats about 125 for concerts and provides excellent acoustics for monthly musical performances, including blues, jazz, folk and classical.

ach year a question is decided on and announced to the public. Arm-chair philosophers from around the country and different parts of the world submit essays arguing one side of the question or the other. The idea of the contest is to provide an opportunity for ordinary people to voice their opinions on serious issues. The first Think-Off was held in 1993 when four finalists, chosen from the hundreds of essays submitted, came to New York Mills to debate the question, “The Nature of Mankind: Inherently Good or Inherently Evil?” Past Think-Off questions include, “Does God Exist?”, “Is the Pen Mightier Than the Sword?”, “Is the Death Penalty Ethical in a Civilized Society?”, “Is Democracy Fair?” and “Which should you trust more: your head or your heart?” 2009 Think-Off winner, John Pollock
FINN CREEK Open Air Museum > Summer Folk Festival - August 28-29 Southeast of New York Mills <
What began as a family farm southeast of New York Mills has emerged as a wonderful outdoor museum. Over the last decade, the Minnesota Finnish-American Historical Society has continued to make acquisitions and improvements to the museum, which include a dipping well, summer kitchen, granary and log corncrib. The Finn Creek Open Air Museum, located six miles southeast of New York Mills, is an 18-acre interpretive site devoted to preserving the heritage of the Finnish culture. Open all summer, the museum includes a 1900 original farmstead, log barns, “Savu” smoke sauna, sawmill and gift shop. The Finn Creek Summer Folk Festival is the last weekend of August. The annual celebration features entertainment, demonstrations, food, a sawmill, grain threshing, tractor pulls, crafts and a Finnish church service.

The loon statue and the August Looney Daze festival are Vergas trademarks. Another Vergas event that is becoming extremely popular is the annual Maple Syrup Festival, usually held the first Saturday in April–complete with an old-fashioned pancake feed. New over the past two years is the Vergas Long Lake blacktop trail, which provides safe passage from the charming downtown area to the loon statue. Dozens of area resorts are ready to show visitors the finer points of water sports, fishing, and just plain relaxing. The Vergas Community Center, remodeled and air conditioned, is available for receptions, dances, meetings and other events. Vergas lives by the adage: “We are small enough to know you, but big enough to serve you!” The grocery store, hardware store, gift shops, restaurants, and all Vergas businesses have first class service for residents and visitors alike.
The Loon A major tourist attraction is the Vergas Loon, a 20-foot-tall replica overlooking Long Lake, dedicated in 1963 to the memory of the community's third postmaster Edward (Ewald G.) Krueger, who served from 1933 until his death in 1962. He was a major advocate of the community park that opened in 1958.

IMMENSE TURKEY helped put Frazee on the map
Frazee, the home of “the world’s largest turkey” is located on the Otter Tail River, just north of Hwy. 10 and over the Otter Tail County border in Becker County. Population is estimated at about 1,400. Frazee is a community of celebrations, including Turkey Days, July 22-25 in 2010. New in Frazee is the August Corn Feed on Main Ave., tentatively set for August 20--but depending on maturity of the corn.

In 1994, 80% of the land was used as crop or pasture land and 20% was forested. Some present-day highways, roads, and railroad grades follow the old trails and oxen-cart paths made by Native Americans and the first white settlers who traveled through Otter Tail County. There is one interstate highway, three US highways, and nine state highways. Three railway systems serve the county. There are five airports – Battle Lake, Henning, New York Mills, Pelican Rapids, Fergus Falls and Perham.

The heaviest 1day rainfall during the period of record was 4.4 inches in Ottertail on June 19, 1979, and 4.3 inches in Fergus Falls on August 7, 1992. CHARMING TOWN with a RURAL HERITAGE

ichville is located near the popular fishing lakes of Rush and Marion. In the summertime, seasonal visitors outnumber permanent residents. Bluegrass music has become a highlight of the summer in Richville, as the recently-expanded United Methodist Church hosts an annual old-time and gospel music festival in June. The 2000 census counted 124 locals--but hundreds of resort guests and seasonal residents count Richville as their “hometown away from home.” They love to stop at the quaint rural community’s famous “Wagon Wheel” general store, which sells everything from bait to groceries to hardware. The “Rockin Horse” is a favorite eatery. The Richville Senior Center is a hub of activity for the area with weekly whist and cribbage games, quilting, and monthly pancake feeds. Early businesses included an elevator, a creamery, and a pickle company; the post office began in 1904 in postmaster Charley A. Friberg's general store.

enning is a “Community Growing With Pride!” The 760 residents of Henning will tell you that it's a nice small town, a great place to raise a family and educate children, a refuge from the hustle and bustle of the big city and just a wonderful place to call home. Henning celebrates all year long in a big way with a summer long Henning area fishing contest, summer crazy days, a Famous Turkey Barbeque, Octoberfest, and Santa Day. The 73rd annual Henning Area Festival and Fly-In will be held July 16-18, 2010. The nine-hole Oakwood Golf Course is a favorite for golfers. In 1905, of those residents not born in Minnesota, 52% were Norwegian, 42% Swedish and 2% German. The 2000 census counted 719 residents in Henning; 32% of Norwegian and 31% of German ancestry, with only 7% having Swedish roots.
VINING
WATERMELON DAY: BIGGEST small town CELEBRATION in the county
V
ining is a small community located on the Otter Trail Scenic Byway. The 2003 population was estimated to be 70. Vining was named for a town in east central Iowa – also with an estimated population of 70. East Battle Lake and Stuart Lake are located near the town of Vining. A building formerly housing the village school serves as a Community Center for activities and senior citizen functions. Vining is nationally known for Watermelon Day in August and Ken Nyberg's metal sculptures. On the third Saturday of each August (Aug. 21, 2010), the community of Vining plays host to nearly 4,000 people for Watermelon Day: “The Biggest Small Town Celebration in Otter Tail County.”

Ken Nyberg, a descendant of early Norwegian settlers who came to the Vining area, has created many interesting sculptures. In 1991, he fashioned a 1,200-pound sculpture of a foot from scrap metal. It stands 11 feet tall and has an exaggerated big toe. This piece was donated to the town of Vining.
HOMETOWN HOSPITALITY in the midst of lively tourism area D
ent is nestled in the center of several lakes with resorts and a thriving tourist industry. The building of the Soo Line through Otter Tail County was responsible for the platting of at least five towns on its right of way, including the village of Dent. Many people puzzle over the unique name of this little community. Ask anyone in town and they will reply, “corn!” A variety of corn grown by the area’s native population, and later seed produced by the Northwestern Dent Corn Company, provides the name. The “Welcome to Dent” signs proudly display the corn logo.

Fish Fry, Chicken Stampede are Dent’s signature events The small community of Dent has several events each year including the Lions Chicken Stampede on July 11. Parade tentatively set , call 218-758-2233. During Lenten season, the Dent Lions Club teams up with Nootzie’s Café to host the perfect fish fry.
Several community organizations serve residents and visitors alike: Dent American Legion Post 148 and Auxiliary, Dent Community Senior Citizens, Dent Volunteer Fire and Rescue, Dent Diggers Garden Club, Dent Community Club, Dent Helping Hands 4-H, and the Dent Lions Club. Summer visitors are encouraged to look for the “Baseball Tonight” banner that signals the opportunity to be a spectator at an event as old as the history of Dent – amateur baseball. Dent’s ball field is a classic, town team diamond--with a picnic shelter and the Lions building nearby.
WOLF LAKE T
raveling east on State Highway 87 from Frazee toward Menahga, a left turn onto County Road 45 leads the way to Wolf Lake and the gateway to the northwoods of Minnesota. With a population of 31, this is the smallest town in Becker County, but the community is well prepared with all the supplies needed to enjoy an outdoor adventure of fishing, hiking, hunting, camping, or many other recreational activities. Visitors don’t need to travel far to enjoy the water. Sportsman’s Park has a fishing pier, picnic facilities, a public boat access, playground equipment and good old-fashioned horseshoe courts. The Wolf Lake Lions Hall and Recreation Area is right on the water’s edge at the Wolf Lake Waterfront Park. There visitors will find a beach, fishing pier, picnic area with shelter, playground, showers and restroom facilities. There are four sites with electric hookups and grills, as well as many informal tenting sites.

Wolf Lake celebrates baseball. The amateur “Wolf Pack” team is a regional favorite. The August Harvest Festival, August 13-15, includes Miss Wolf Lake and Little Miss Wolf Lake pageants, a street dance and a beer garden, a 5K run/walk, a coloring contest, ham dinner, mud run, parade, arm wrestling, pie social, horseshoe tournament, food court, and softball tournament. attle Lake is a bustling little community wrapped snugly around the western edge of West Battle Lake. The public beach is one of the finest in the area. he quaint Lutheran church in downtown Battle Lake has been transformed into a beautiful community center--complete with a performance stage. Completing its first full season in 2009, the Lakes Area Community Center featured weekly entertainment on “Come to the Lakes” night. Even Elvis graced the community center stage! The series was so successful that the Thursday night features are planned again for 2010. Just a few steps off Battle Lake’s wonderful Main Street, the Lakes Area Community Center also serves as an information center for the lake country.

rt of the Lakes Gallery in Battle Lake displays a large number of high quality art pieces in a variety of mediums, including paintings in oil, watercolor, pastels, as well as sculpture, carved gourds, pottery, jewelry and much more. Much of the art is inspired by Minnesota’s beautiful landscape and wildlife. Visitors will enjoy perusing fine artwork in the pleasant atmosphere of our convenient downtown location. Recently renovated to exhibit even more artwork, including guest artists, the gallery is wellknown as one of the most spacious, well-lit and inviting in Central Minnesota. Art of the Lakes has been in existence for over 40 years and is a non-profit organization with a membership of over 120. The gallery is run by exhibiting member artists who live in the area, many of whom are well-known both locally and internationally. Art of the Lakes also promotes art education, workshops for all ages, and continues its mission to increase art awareness in the surrounding area.

Rd. 8 on the south side of Little Pine Lake. PLGC is the area’s only 27-hole championship course with a Golf Learning Center and driving range. The rating/slope varies with the different 18-hole combinations. The Pine Course was added in 2001 and a new clubhouse with a restaurant, banquet hall and pro shop opened in the spring of 2003. Known for its variety, PLGC is a regular stop for novices as well as seasoned amateurs.

he history of milling in rural Minnesota is embodied in the story of Phelps Mill. William Thomas purchased the land in 1887 and had the mill operating by 1889. Originally known as the Maine Roller Mill, it produced 60-75 barrels of flour per day. It was later renamed Phelps Mill after Thomas’ wife’s maiden name to avoid confusion with the village of Maine a few miles north of the mill. After the turn of the century, business at the mill gradually declined. Steam, gasoline and electricity powered mills ran more efficiently than water. In addition, railroads made it cheaper to ship wheat to Minneapolis/St. Paul than to mill the wheat in the county. Soon rural mills became obsolete. Thomas sold the mill in 1919. It was sold again in 1928 and eventually closed in 1939. Phelps Mill has become a symbol of the old rural life.

NO BOAT?
East Otter Tail lake country has shore, pier fishing opportunities You don’t need a fancy boat and high tech fishing gear to fish the East Otter Tail lake country. Several DNR fishing piers are scattered around the area--and shore fishing opportunities are available on almost any lake. Pier fishing is done from floating platforms that are built over the water and are typically 80 feet in length. Minnesota is known for its tremendous outdoor recreational opportunities. Since 1972, the DNR has been updating its facilities and programs to meet state and federal accessibility standards, opening the outdoors to people with disabilities.
AREA FISHING PIERS INCLUDE: • In the scenic Vergas city park, near the towering sculpture of “The World’s Largest Loon.” The park, which includes a beautiful picnic area, is walking distance from downtown Vergas. • A pier is located at the very southwest tip of Otter Tail Lake, one of the state’s most widely known recreational lakes. Look for the pier off Highway 78, south of Ottertail city. • Tucked away on tiny Beers Lake is a great fishing hole, west of Dent, off Highway 108.

GLENDALOUGH STATE PARK “HERITAGE FISHING” brings anglers back 100 years
W
ith more than nine miles of undeveloped shoreline and six lakes, this angler’s paradise is one of the last large tracts of undeveloped lakeshore and land in west central Minnesota.

In addition to the typical motorized boating and fishing opportunities offered in the park on Molly Stark Lake, Glendalough offers a designated “Heritage Fishery” on Annie Battle Lake. This 335-acre lake, located near the park campground, was a private fishing lake for many years, and its fish populations and sizes are more comparable to historic times. Very large bass and panfish are still relatively abundant, as are walleyes of good eating size. Special experimental regulations are in effect to preserve the serenity of this undeveloped lake. As a result, visitors can experience fishing as it was 100 years ago. Current restrictions include: No motors. This includes electric trolling motors as well. Rowboat and canoe rentals are available at the park. No electronic fish-finding devices. During spring and fall migration, to the delight of birdwatchers, the park is a major waterfowl staging area. Two observation areas in the park provide excellent opportunities to see wildlife activity. Hiking trails take you through oak and northern hardwood forests. One trail leads to a prairie hill.

INSPIRATION PEAK One of the HIGHEST POINTS in the state
I
n the southern part of Otter Tail County is a collection of glacial features known as the Leaf Hills. The highest is Inspiration Peak, just west of Urbank. It rises 1,750 feet, about 400 feet above the countryside. It is the highest point in the county and one of the highest points in the state. The vista was well-known to Sinclair Lewis. He wrote, “There’s to be seen a glorious 20-mile circle of some 50 lakes scattered among fields and pastures, like sequins fallen on an old paisley shawl.” The quarter-mile hike to the top can be a workout, and there are several benches along the way. The view is particularly impressive in autumn, when the hardwoods are ablaze, but this wayside rest area offers a captivating view any time. There’s a wooded park with picnic tables and restrooms.

MAPLEWOOD STATE PARK
A stunning AUTUMN DISPLAY of color
E
njoy the maple forest as it turns brilliant shades of orange, gold, and red in the fall. Eight major lakes and many ponds offer water lovers places to swim, fish, boat, and simply relax. Lake Lida has a sandy beach and large picnic areas for visitors. Drive along the scenic route to observe the wildlife: the park is host to 150 bird species and 50 species of mammals. The park drive at dawn and dusk is a great time to see deer. Beaver are active in some lakes and raccoons, squirrels, rabbits, and chipmunks can be seen frequently. As a result of the varied landscape in the park, 150 bird species breed here, along with 50 species of mammals, and 25 kinds of reptiles and amphibians. Human habitation in the area dates back at least 6,000 years. Artifacts found in the park give evidence of both prairie and woodland cultures. Most artifacts, however, indicate that the site was occupied 900 to 1,200 years ago and that the residents were primarily hunters during that period. Amid the farmlands that surround the park, Maplewood sits on a series of high tree-covered hills that provide visitors with striking vistas of small, clear lakes nestled in deep valleys. The park is known for its hardwood trees including sugar maple, basswood, American elm and oak. These same trees provide a stunning display of fall colors each year. In addition, red cedar and tamarack are found in the park.

Otter Dazzle Holiday Celebration December 4 • Ottertail Locals turn out in impressive numbers each year for the day-long Otter Dazzle celebration, which officially ushers in the holiday season in Ottertail city. The winter event culminates in a nighttime parade down Main Street, complete with floats decked out with Christmas lights and characters. After the parade, a colorful fireworks display is a unique spectacle in the winter sky. This year’s Otter Dazzle celebration has been set for December 4, 2010.

November to December • Perham Perham lights up for the holidays every year--the day after Thanksgiving. The 2010 “Parade of Lights” holiday kick-off will be November 26. Community groups, businesses and families decorate vehicles, bicycles and just about anything that rolls with a colorful array of holiday lights. Perham merchants roll out the red carpet for the holiday season. Many merchants are open for longer hours during the holidays, and there are downtown promotions every week between Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Sled Dog Rendezvous January 22-23 • Frazee The tenth annual “Third Crossing Sled Dog Rendezvous” will be hosted on the trails and backwoods of the beautiful Frazee area on January 22-23 in 2010. The race gives spectators the opportunity to see the dogs up close, and talk with the “mushers.” The event becomes a winter celebration, as the community of Frazee welcomes racers and spectators for winter activities and events.
