The 79th Northwest Carnival is set to kick off July 11, and this year’s admirals have had their work cut out for them with more than 60 individual events taking place over the carnival’s 11 days. Admirals Nick Omberg and Tom Winters have been responsible for organizing the events and making sure 2014 will be a carnival to remember. “It’s not a one-person job anymore,” Omberg said about all of the work that goes into organizing the carnival. In many past years, one admiral has been chosen to lead the Water Carnival. Recent years, however, have brought an increase in attendance and number of events, prompting the move to nominate two admirals per year. This year’s admirals both live in Detroit Lakes. Omberg has lived here his entire life, and Winters moved here four years ago from Sauk Centre. They have both been involved with the Jaycees since 2010, and have seen membership grow over the past few years from 60 members to around 80. That membership base has provided much needed support as the two took on the task of planning the Water Carnival. “A lot of new members are stepping up, which is awesome,” Winters said. Jaycees members serve as

However, much of the work that goes into planning out events and booking entertainment has been done by Omberg and Winters. One big get for the two was the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, who will be playing Bash on the Beach on Saturday, July 19. The concert, and Parade of the Northwest the following morning, are the two biggest carnival events and will cap off a year’s worth of work for the pair. “What’s done is done,” Omberg said about reaching the culmination of their efforts, adding that he will be happy to “kick back and enjoy everything” as the band takes the stage. Something else they’re both excited to see this year is a special demolition derby match, deemed a “dealership grudge match.” The event will feature cars put together by local auto dealers, with the winner taking home a

trophy. The first-time event, to be held before the derby finals on July 12, is expected to be repeated during future carnivals. “Hopefully it will gain momentum over the years,” Winters said, with the trophy traveling between yearly winners. Proceeds raised from the carnival’s events will go to local charities and nonprofit organizations. Arrangements have already been made for money raised from the Bed Races to go to the Food for Thought Backpack Program of Becker County. The program provides weekend meals for qualifying area students in kindergarten through fifth grade. Other charitable donations are still to be determined. “We’ll see how everything goes…we have to make some money first,” Omberg said. Race organizers welcome participants of all skill levels for this year’s paddleboard race.

The Midsummer Bike Tour takes riders all around Detroit Lakes and the Cormorant lakes area.

Cycling for scenic views, good cause BY KRISTIN MILLER

kmiller@dlnewspapers.com

The lakes area has no shortage of beautiful scenery, and what better way to enjoy it than from the seat of a bicycle? The Detroit Lakes Midsummer Bike Tour, a Water Carnival favorite since 2008, is back again this summer. On July 13, riders can get up early and take their bikes to the Detroit Lakes Pavilion to sign up for the ride. From there, they can choose between three routes of varying lengths. The courses are 13, 26 or 43 miles. They will take riders all around Detroit Lakes, with the longer courses taking riders by the Cormorant Lakes area. “When they’re out on the course (riders) can choose to take a longer or shorter route,” said Kim Bettcher, one of the event’s organizers. She added that the flexibility of the tour allows all participants ride at their own pace. Some, she said, even make stops at destinations along the way, such as in the Shoreham area. “It’s considered a ‘fun ride,’” she said. The event isn’t timed, and no awards are given for top finishers. However, the spirit of the ride really isn’t about competition. Bettcher said that people come out year after year to enjoy the scenery along the route, spend the morning with family and friends, and support a good cause.

Proceeds from the ride will go to benefit the Detroit Lakes Community and Cultural Center. The money raised will be used to help fund scholarships for kids to participate in center activities, and to help furnish supplies. Event organizers see an average participation of around 200 riders. Cyclists from lakes country and beyond come to town for the event, and many have been returning for multiple years. “It’s fun to see people come back,” Bettcher said. Some riders come with cycling groups from around the area, she said, while others who are in town for family reunions or other Water Carnival events make a special point to gear up for the tour. And organizers haven’t left out the youngest members of the family. With a registration fee of just $5, a kids’ ride will be held at 10 a.m. The ride is open to children ages 10 and under, and offers both 1K and 5K courses. Registration begins at 6:30 a.m., with groups of riders leaving between 7 and 9. There will be water and food stops throughout the course to keep bikers hydrated and energized. Participants in both the kid and adult courses will receive a free T-shirt, and are welcomed to stay after the ride for root beer floats provided with help from Lakeside Tavern. Early registration forms and more information about both rides can be found on the Jaycees’ website under the events tab.

Racers paddle for victory on Detroit Lake BY KRISTIN MILLER

kmiller@dlnewspapers.com

A relatively new pastime in lakes country, stand-up paddleboarding has been fast gaining popularity all over the area. For the third year in a row, a paddleboard race will be a part of the Water Carnival lineup. The competition offers both experienced boarders and first-timers the chance to get out on the water and enjoy the fun new sport. Race organizer Jess Stuewe said that anyone is welcome to come and try their hand at paddleboarding, no previous experience necessary. In fact, Stuewe said that during the race’s first year, the winner had never been on a paddleboard before the day of the competition. She said the race is “very informal,” with finishing times ranging from 20 minutes for more serious competitors, to 40 minutes for those who just come out to enjoy the experience. Race organizers have seen the event grow from just a handful of participants the first year to more than ten last summer. This year, they’re hoping to see even more people compete. The race path follows Detroit Lakes

City Beach. It is two miles long, with racers paddling a mile up and back down the beach. Registration begins an hour before race time at 9 a.m. on the beach near J&K Marina. The race is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. but the start time may be adjusted in the event of unfavorable weather conditions. With a Water Carnival Button, the race is free to enter. Participants can either bring their own paddleboard to race, or rentals will be available for $15. Proceeds from the board rentals will go to the Jaycees’ contributions to area charities. Additionally, all participants in the race will receive a small water-proof bag perfect for stowing a cell phone or other personal items during the race. Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers, but to Stuewe, the competition is almost secondary. Being on the water and enjoying the warm summer weather and carnival atmosphere is more than enough. “Just come out and have fun with it,” she encourages. More information on the race and a printable liability waiver can be found on the Jaycees’ website under the schedule of events.

Local ‘beasts’ hit the beach for strength competition BY KRISTIN MILLER

kmiller@dlnewspapers.com

Calling all strong men and women. This year’s Beast on the Beach event promises to weed out the strong from the weak, and offers the chance for strength athletes everywhere to show what they’re made of. 2014 marks the second year the event is being hosted as a part of the Water Carnival. Event organizer Nate Woodard said that even though they only had a handful of participants last year, there was great attendance and feedback from spectators. He hopes the buzz generated by last year’s event will have even more athletes signing up. Woodard describes the event as a “fun fitness competition down on the beach.” Beast on the Beach will feature lightweight and heavyweight divisions. Depending on interest and participation, Woodard said they’re also considering adding a women’s division.

Strength athletes from around the area competed on the beach last year. This year, event organizers hope to see even more participants. The lineup for the event includes several different tests of strength such as bench press, log press and a squat competition. The trolley pull, a big hit with the crowd last summer, will also be back on the agenda for this year.

We call this

Home!

The different divisions and variety of events are designed to make the contest accessible to athletes of varying skill levels and competition experience. Participants don’t have to be pro-

fessional body builders to compete, Woodard said, adding that they’ve structured Beast on the Beach to allow amateur athletes to get in on the action. To help boost participation, event organizers plan to market the event in the Fargo-Moorhead area. They hope to bring in more athletes from surrounding communities than they saw last summer. “We’re looking to get as many competitors down as we can,” Woodard said, hoping that more athletes will mean a better competition for both participants and spectators. Trophies will be given to winners in each division, along with the bragging rights of being the strongest “beast” on Detroit Lakes City Beach. Registration for the event begins an hour before the competition at 11 a.m. on July 19. Interested competitors can check out the Jaycees’ website for more information. Woodard is also available for additional questions at (291) 234-6300.

‘Family Day’ fun for all ages BY KRISTIN MILLER

kmiller@dlnewspapers.com

Fun-seekers of all ages come to Detroit Lakes to enjoy the Water Carnival festivities, but carnival staff have made a special effort to organize an entire day full of events for the youngest attendees. Family Day, a longtime Water Carnival tradition, is back for 2014. There is an all-day lineup planned which promises something to interest even the pickiest of kids. Events for the day kick off with a non-denominational Christian worship service put on by Young Life ministries in the Pavilion at 10:30 a.m. The service will be followed by a family picnic in City Park at 11:30. The service and picnic will be followed by an afternoon of events taking place all over the beach and at City Park. A ship-building contest let’s kids put their engineering skills to the test. With just 30 minutes to build the best ship they can, participants will use duct tape, card board and Styrofoam to build sea-worthy vessels. The Jaycees will provide the supplies, you provide the ingenuity.

Kids young and old are welcome to come down to the beach and City Park for a day of family-friendly activities. Another favorite, the sand castle contest, will also be held on the beach. This year features three different categories: castle, character and other. Judging for the event begins at 4 p.m. All creations entered in the contest

need to be registered by 3. Also on the beach, kids 2 to 12 years old will be able to participate in the search for treasure, hunting for buried coins and candy in the sand. Offered for the first time last year,

the Fishing Extravaganza will again be held on the Detroit Lakes City Beach Fishing Pier from 1-2:30 p.m. A watermelon feed, face painting and frog and turtle races are all going to be among the many events offered in City Park. From 1-3 p.m., the Jaycees’ Trolley will also be giving rides, with a pickup spot in the park. One new event to be held during Family Day this year is the Pup Plunge. Featuring a jumping contest for dogs big and small, Admiral Tom Winters said that any dog can be a part of the event. “All breeds are welcome,” Winters said. And dogs need not be competitive jumpers to participate. Regular house dogs can come put their leaps to the test as well. And Winters hopes they do, the amateur pups adding to the “comedy factor” of the event. All canine participants in the Pup Plunge will go home with a gift bag furnished by Becker Pet and Garden. To cap off Family Day events, a kids’ music show will be held in the City Park Bandshell at 3:30 p.m. For a full list and times of events, check out the Jaycees’ website. Family Day events are free to participate with your Water Carnival Button.

Great vendors, prizes draw in shoppers BY KRISTIN MILLER

kmiller@dlnewspapers.com

A little retail therapy can do a world of good, and during this year’s Water Carnival, anyone who loves to shop can come and enjoy a fun night on the town. Coming back for a fourth summer, Sweet Summer Night promises something to interest just about everybody. “There will be a plethora of vendors,” said event organizer Jenni Steelye. Everything from fashion to food will be on display and ready for shoppers to browse. Beginning at 5 p.m. and running until 8, Washington Avenue will be blocked off for vendors to set up shop. Live music will set a fun atmosphere for the night. Steelye said that in past years they’ve seen solid community support

and participation for the event and said that rain or shine they expect a successful event this year as well. In the event of rain showers, she said, they will just move the event inside to Washington Square Mall. Steelye also said that something fun for shoppers this year is a punch-card. Every vendor at the event will have a place to punch, and attendees who stop at every booth will eligible to put their name into a drawing for some great prizes. These prizes include gift certificates, tickets to WE Fest and jewelry. The punch-card system ensures that shoppers don’t miss a single vendor and are able to take in everything the event has to offer. Older guests will also have the opportunity to sample some unique wines as a part of the evening event. During previous years, Steelye said

they’ve partnered with Lakes Liquor and local wine vendors to set up a wine tasting for guests to enjoy. Shoppers of all ages are welcome to come down and stroll, browse the many vendors and enjoy the music and

summer air during this year’s event, which is set to take place on Monday, July 14. More information on the event can be found on the Water Carnival website’s schedule of events.

2014 musical lineup sure to impress BY KRISTIN MILLER

kmiller@dlnewspapers.com

Music is never far from the minds of Water Carnival organizers and attendees. Admirals Nick Omberg and Tom Winters made a big score this year by getting the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band to come to town, and both are looking forward to the week’s events. Two of the Water Carnival’s premier music events are Party in the Park and Bash on the Beach. This year, both nights are set to feature groups who have put their own spin on country music. On Friday, July 18, Party in the Park will be headlined by local musical group The Roosters. Band members Rick Adams, Rock Menge, Mike Morse and Scott Lange promise a set filled with their own special mix of rock and country music, which has earned them acclaim as one of the best country bands in the upper Midwest. The concert is set to begin in the park following the Bed Races earlier that evening. Party in the Park will be free to attend, with a freewill donation set up. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band will be headlining this year’s Bash on the Beach. The event kicks off at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 19. “We’re hoping to get about 2,000 people,” Winters said, expecting that the big-name band will bring out a good crowd. Average attendance for the Bash is about 1,500, he said. Nitty Gritty Dirt Band has a long history, playing on stages all over the country since 1966. Over the years they’ve seen many different band
