follow these steps for planning the

WEDDING of YoUR DREAMS

T

here are a few things where weddings are concerned that cannot be predicted or controlled. What Mother Nature will do on the day is one of them. However, there are many items that are well within the control of the bride and groom; proper planning can help ensure the wedding of their dreams. One of the best ways to ease wedding-day nerves is for the couple to get organized and begin planning their event the moment the engagement period begins. The earlier preparation starts, the better the chance vendors will be able to provide what’s needed, or changes can be made when unforseen events pop up. By making a list of things to do, couples can allot time in their schedules for each task -- and they can feel a sense of accomplishment and relief each time an item is ticked off the list.

DeciDe on the weDDing Date Couples should select a date for their wedding soon after becoming engaged. After all, it is the countdown to this day that will help organize and determine planning schedules. ReseRve a ceRemony location Traditional weddings take place in a house of worship. It’s best to meet with a pastor, rabbi or other officiant to see if the ceremony site will be available for the wedding. This person will also help guide couples through any religious requirements needed prior to getting married there, as well as any rules and regulations for the ceremony site. Book a Reception site After securing the ceremony location, couples will have peace of mind knowing they can now book the place where their party will take place. This may be a catering hall, hotel, cruise ship, or even someone’s backyard. Sometimes the ceremony site is also the reception site, as is the case in many second weddings. Catering directors are typically on hand to talk about pricing and options. They will work closely with the couple to plan and execute the reception.

in many cases. The couple should select a florist who offers them helpful, creative ideas about bou bouquets, corsages and centerpieces -- and will deliver in a timely manner. select anD oRDeR DResses Wedding and bridesmaid gowns can take several months to order and be tailored. It can also take some trial and error finding a dress shop that meets the needs of a bride and her attendants. So it’s best if this fun part of wedding planning is done early on. While there are no set rules for gown selection, it may help if the bride and her attendants all use the same shop so that styles will be complementary and service and alterations can be organized with minimal fuss.

select a photogRapheR Photographers tend to book very quickly, particularly if they are well recommended. It pays to research and choose one early in the wedding-planning process. Every photographer has a different style. The couple should select one who will accommodate their wishes, but also suggest ideas that may not have been considered -- such as artistic black and white prints or photo journalism-type images. The photographer’s personality is very important. He or she will be spending the entire day with the couple and should be liked and personable. Couples should find out if the photographer they speak with at the studio will be the one shooting the wedding. Some companies have multiple staff on hand. Book a BanD oR DJ Another vendor that tends to have a busy schedule will be the wedding entertainer. Early booking ensures your date will be available. Couples should talk about musical selections and the ways to engage the various generations attending the reception in the fun. choose a floRist Flowers add an elegant touch to the wedding day. A florist will provide flowers for the ceremony and the reception

oRDeR invitations With a bevy of styles of invitations there will be many ideas to consider. Couples should leave ample time to look through invitation sample books or do research on the Internet. They should decide on a style that best suits their wedding, based on its formality, the time of day and the wedding colors. choose tRanspoRtation Many couples forget to factor limousine or car rentals into their weddingday plans. Whether it’s a limo, Rolls, horse-drawn carriage, or a party bus, the bride and groom should arrange for transportation for themselves and their attendants to and from the church and reception site. finD foRmal weaR Tuxedo rentals are quite popular for weddings. If the wedding is taking place during a peak party season, such as prom time, it pays for couples to reserve tuxes several months in advance of the wedding. All of the groomsmen should rent from the same shop to be uniform. With these important decisions made, the bride- and groom-to-be have only a few things left to do as their wedding draws nearer. This includes selecting wedding favors, addressing the invitations and purchasing thankyou gifts for their wedding party.

treat guests to an

‘InvItIng’ Message

T

here are infinite opportunities for uniqueness with wedding invitations, which is why selecting the right invitation is often one of the most confusing aspects of planning a wedding. Invitations are usually your first line of communication regarding the upcoming celebration, and they typically set the tone of the affair and what guests should expect. Wedding etiquette experts also say that gift-giving is subject to influence by the type of invitation received. Guests also tend to determine what they will wear to the wedding depending upon the invitation. All of these perceptions about the wedding are made even before guests read the first line of sentiment on the invitation itself. With so much inferred meaning placed on invitations, it’s no wonder you may be nervous about choosing and sending out invitations. Here are some pointers so you’ll make the right decisions. There are many personalization options at your disposal with wedding invitations. You’ll be able to choose the texture, color and shape of the paper, as well as the font and ink color in many cases. These selections can be combined with other embellishments, such as envelope linings, extra layers of paper, vellum accents, ribbons, and calligraphy styles. You may also be able to select a monogram or artwork to further embellish the invitation. If your wedding will be a formal affair, choose a classic style invitation that will reflect the formalness of the affair. If your wedding will be casual, choose a design and font that expresses that feeling. Here are some otHer tips to consider: n Wait until you have definite times and locations for the ceremony and reception before submitting any wording to the invitation company. n Type out the wording you prefer with a word-processing program on your computer. Run a spell-check and print it out and read it over several times. This will cut

down on the chances for error once the wording is sent for printing. n To know how many invitations to order, take the forecasted number of guests and divide that number by two. Then add 25 to 30 additional invitations for any single guests you may be inviting as well as to have extras on hand in case you make a mistake addressing the invitation. So if you are inviting 150 people (assuming most will come as couples), order 100 invitations. n Many people opt to print out addresses on the invitation envelope themselves. While home printers and software packages have certainly advanced, it may be difficult to match the font and style of your invitation. Furthermore, while hand-addressing invitations is more time-consuming, it adds a personalized touch and shows you care about those invited. n Make sure you bring an invitation to the post office to be weighed so you can determine how much postage you will need. Mail them 4 to 6 weeks before the wedding to allow for response time. It’s customary to enclose a response card with postage already applied so guests can simply drop their RSVP in the mail.

W

hile couples about to get married may differ with respect to personal style or what season in which to hold their wedding, most agree that having photo memories of their wedding is essential. That’s why a photographer is such an important part of the wedding planning process. Although professional wedding portraits and albums are a key component to good memories, candid shots from you -- the family and friends who attend the wedding -- are some of the most cherished photos a couple can have. Here are some tips for capturing all the incredible moments of this important day. n Familiarize yourself with the camera: Take some time to learn the ins and outs of your camera before you’re called upon to take pictures of the wedding. Learn the best way to zoom and focus, and find out if your camera has any special features, such as black and white capabilities or panoramic views. Also, don’t forget to charge or replace the batteries. For those with digital memory cards, purchase a new one with plenty of space so you can freely snap away. n Tell a story: Start taking pictures before the wedding even occurs. If you’re a friend or a family member, capture the special events leading up to the wedding, such as dress fittings, choosing wedding rings, the bridal shower, or shots of the bachelor party. This way the photos can be put together to tell the entire story of the wedding, culminating with the big day. n Go for the close-up: Stand no more than 4 to 6 feet from your subjects when snapping a picture. You want to be sure the couple is the central focus of the picture, not the distracting background items. n Shoot candid shots: Posed pictures have their place, but candid shots can really capture the mood and excitement of the day. Snap away while everyone is dancing, when the couple isn’t looking, or if you see a special moment that others may not be aware of. n Include pictures of party participants: The couple will have plenty of images of themselves and their wedding party in a photographer’s album. What they may be missing are the people who actually attended the wedding. Be sure to take plenty of pictures of the people who came together to share in this special day.

SO MANY CHOICES

selecting the grooms wedding day attire

T

here are many grooms-to-be who leave choosing their wedding day attire to the last minute. After all, it’s something that doesn’t require much thought at all, right? Actually, choosing your attire requires careful consideration of several variables. As such, many men are intimidated by the process, another reason for procrastination. However, acquiring a few pointers will help make the process easier if you have limited experience with wedding day attire. It’s first important to consider the style of your wedding. What time is it being held? What is the size of the wedding party and the number of attendants? Will it be held in a church with a reception at a fancy catering hall, or is it a more laid-back affair at a park or on the beach? All of these questions will help determine the formality of the event. Your wardrobe choices should coincide with this level of formality. Tuxedos are often the attire of choice for weddings that are moderately or ultra formal. A tuxedo with a bow tie and tails is a very formal look. For the majority of weddings a tuxedo without tails, with a matching vest and regular tie, will be adequate for the groom and groomsmen. On some occasions, especially casual weddings, grooms choose to wear a sports jacket and slacks rather than a tuxedo. Tuxedoes are flattering for most men, especially when a black tuxedo is chosen. Black is slimming, and simply slipping into a tuxedo can enable anyone to look sophisticated. Working with a tuxedo shop representative can help you to find a tuxedo that fits well. These garments are available in a number of sizes, but a reputable shop will make minor alterations to ensure a perfect fit. You want to be sure there is no pulling in the jacket and that the pants are a good length. Also, shirt sleeve length is important (the cuffs should extend past the jacket a little bit), as well as the fit of the shirt collar. You want to be comfortable the entire duration of your wedding. Tuxedo jackets come in many styles, with the basics being single- or double-breasted. Double-breasted jackets may add a little bulk, which should be avoided by heavy men or those who are very slim. Jackets also come in different lengths. Choose one that is proportionate to your height so your body does not look overwhelmed by the jacket. Here are a few of the styles: n Cutaway jaCket: This jacket is shorter in the front and tapers to one longer tail in the back. It is traditionally a formal daytime jacket. n traditional tuxedo jaCket: As mentioned, this can be single- or double-breasted and feature varied numbers of button closures. The lapels may also be varied. A peaked lapel forms a “V” at the collar and points upward. A notched lapel has an indentation at the collar in the shape of a triangle. A shawl lapel has no indentation and smoothly curves around the neck. n Mandarin jaCket: Mandarin-style jackets do

not have a lapel but a collar that stands straight up. There are six buttons along the front. It is worn with a mandarinstyle shirt without a tie. n long Coat: The long coat is best worn by tall, broad-shouldered men and is traditional in colder weather. The coat extends beyond the fingertips of the wearer. n dinner jaCket: This is a variation on the regular tuxedo jacket, but it is usually ivory or white in color. This can set the groom apart from other members of the wedding party. Many grooms-to-be opt to rent their tuxedo instead of purchase one. Wedding experts recommend renting the attire three months before the wedding. All groomsmen should rent their tuxedos from the same shop for a uniform look. It is also customary to coordinate the tuxedos with the gowns bridesmaids will be wearing. One way to do so is with a similar colored tie, vest or cummerbund. Take a color swatch of one of the bridesmaids’ gowns with you to the tuxedo store for assistance with matching the look. Pick up the tuxedo a day or two before the wedding and try on every piece, including the shoes, to check for fit. This way you have time for an exchange if something is not right or to pick up a missing tie or cufflink, which is apt to happen. Rented tuxedoes usually need to be returned the day after the wedding or the next business day. Elect a member of the wedding party to handle tuxedo returns because you’re likely to be on your honeymoon at this point.

how to establish a wedding day budget and stick to it

W

hen it comes to planning a wedding, finances are first and foremost on the minds of many couples. As the costs associated with weddings continue to rise, the need for a budget only grows more apparent. But how can a couple establish and stick to a budget? Doing so depends on each individual couple, how much they can spend and what they’re willing to sacrifice for their big day. establishing a budget Wedding budgets can vary greatly depending on the couple and the type of wedding they desire. A wedding budget should be established as far in advance as possible. When setting the budget, it’s best to determine exactly how much you can spend, and then set the budget lower than that. For example, if the most you can afford is $25,000, set your budget at $22,000. This will allow you some wiggle room when the inevitable happens and you’re forced to go over budget. Monitor your spending Once a budget has been determined, a good way for couples to adhere to that budget is to establish a separate wedding spending account. This account should be separate from personal accounts, and all wedding expenses should be drawn solely from this wedding account. This is a good way to monitor how much you’re spending, and your monthly statement will provide an itemized list of how much is being deposited and spent.

be ready to spend More Regardless of how well you’ve planned the wedding, you’re going to end up spending more than your initial budget allowed. This happens for a number of reasons, ranging from overtime fees at the reception to tipping the vendors to larger guest lists than you might have originally intended. Prepare for the inevitable overspending by cutting back on other expenses leading up to the big day. Rather than going out to dinner on weekends, make a homecooked meal to save some money. Instead of costly trips to a night club, invite friends over for the night. You’ll be surprised how much these subtle lifestyle changes can save you. stiCk to your guns While you should be prepared to spend more, that extra spending should be saved for things such as tipping the staff and possibly paying more for an additional guest or two. Where couples should be budget-cautious is when vendors try to up-sell services. For example, while a topshelf bar might be a nice gesture, it can be considerably more expensive than just offering beer at your reception, and letting your guests pay for liquor. If a vendor tries to up-sell, couples should not hold that against the vendor. After all, that is the vendor’s job. Instead, prioritize what you want before you go visit any vendors. You’re much more likely to be happy with your selections.

breaking in shoes It is recommended to choose shoes prior to a last fitting so that the gown length can be adjusted depending upon the height of the heel. Purchasing shoes early also gives brides a chance to break in their shoes. Wearing the shoes around the house and scuffing up the soles not only makes them more comfortable and less slip-worthy, it gives brides practice walking in them. Plus, if upon breaking in the shoes she finds they aren’t what she hoped for, a new pair of shoes can be purchased. Remember, feet tend to swell as the day goes on, so brides may want to choose a shoe a half-size bigger for comfort later on.

hile a bride’s gown, hairstyle and other accoutrements are the first things others see when she walks down the aisle, it’s what she wears on her feet that may make the most impact on her wedding day. But how can a couple establish and stick to a budget? Doing so depends on each individual couple, how much they can spend and what they’re willing to sacrifice for their big day. That’s because a comfortable bride is often a happy bride. And as anyone who has squeezed into too-tight shoes knows, one’s mood can certainly turn sour if feet are covered with blisters and walking is uncomfortable. While many brides are quick to pick the most beautiful shoes for their wedding day, perhaps they should choose more based on comfort than aesthetics. That said, there are still plenty of options that are beautiful as well as comfortable.

deCiding on a style Shoes come in many styles that can complement a wedding day look. Closed toe: These shoes are completely enclosed and may be prefered for the bride who wants to wear a full stocking. They create an unbroken line from the gown to the floor. They’re also elegant and ideal for winter weddings. peep toe: This offers the benefits of a closed-toe shoe with a little peek of toe. They’re often considered sexy and sweet. open toe: These sandal-like shoes are best worn in warm weather and without stockings for a clean look. Brides should be sure to splurge on a pedicure so their toes look neat and perfect. slingback: These shoes expose the heel for a little bit of drama. Make

sure they fit well otherwise the heel strap may slide down and become a nuisance. Choose heel height Many brides want to be the belle of the ball, and to them high heels seem to be the way to achieve this. However, choosing a lower heel or a flat may be a smart move where comfort is involved. A word of advice is to choose the lowest heel possible, which helps avoid snags on a gown or unsteady traversing down the aisle or up and down church steps. Lower heels are also much more comfortable for dancing.

bait and switCh Some brides prefer to sweat out the ceremony and pictures in one pair of less comfortable shoes and then switch into a pair of satin slippers or even sneakers for the remainder of the celebration. When favors or flowers are dropped off at the reception, a friend can tuck these switch-out shoes under the bride’s seat so that she can change into them at her convenience. wedding traditions Brides can create wedding memories by taking their shoes and having them bronzed, just like parents used to do with baby shoes. They can also have all of the unmarried bridesmaids sign their names on the soles of the shoes. The last name left that hasn’t worn off after the end of the wedding is the next person who will be getting married. Some brides prefer to wear shoes that match their wedding color or offer that “something blue.”

FEEDING THE GUESTS

O

ne of the biggest decisions a couple has to make when planning a wedding concerns how to feed the guests. This boils down to two choices: a sit down meal or a buffet style serving. Each has their ups and downs, and which route to take typically depends on a number of factors. Degree of formality: Formal weddings often call for a sit-down meal, as it’s generally viewed as more elegant. But this doesn’t exclude the buffet- style option from formal weddings. At more laid back, but still formal, weddings a buffet-style meal is perfectly acceptable. For weddings that aren’t as formal, it’s generally best (and less expensive) to offer a buffet style meal. the guest list: The global nature of the world today means friends and family are spread out more than ever. The guest lists at many weddings are increasingly looking like a United Nations summit, with attendees coming from all over the map. If a wedding guest list features many guests who have flown or traveled from afar, it might be more appropriate to offer a more relaxed, sit down meal. The age of guests should be considered as well before deciding on a meal option. If there will be lots of elderly people or even guests with young children, it’s probably easier on them to offer a sit down meal. For weddings that boast a particularly young guest list, a buffet style might encourage more mingling and allow those guests to meet one another a lot easier than a sit down meal would. BuDget: Buffet-style meals are generally less expensive, but this isn’t always the case. Some think a sit-down meal will cost more because a wait staff is required to serve the food and drinks. While this is true to an extent, buffet-style meals still require a staff on hand to replace food that has run out. In addition, the time of day of the reception plays a role as well. For example, a buffet-style lunch will not be nearly as expensive as a buffet-style dinner. In general, though, a buffet at a wedding is almost always more budgetfriendly than a sit down, typically costing far less per plate. flexiBility: Guest lists are often unique, with each guest having particular preferences when it comes to food. This makes buffets an especially attractive option. Sit

down meals can be very limiting, which won’t bode well for picky eaters. A buffet, however, offers many selections, and chances are even the pickiest of eaters will find something they can devour.

How SwEET IT IS selecting the wedding cake

&Gift Guide

W

hen it comes to the wedding cake, couples have many options. Some may skip the cake entirely and go with a dessert bar instead. Some may order one small wedding cake and several sheet cakes to serve to their guests. Some may forgo the main cake and serve smaller cakes in various flavors at the reception tables. Whatever your personal preferences, make certain you discuss the matter in great detail with your fiancé, and should you decide to go with a wedding cake, keep the following trends in mind. The wedding cakes of today hardly resemble those of yesterday. Gone for the most part are the rich, threetiered, heavily decorated cakes and in their place is a wide range of cakes customized specifically for the bride and groom. When selecting a wedding cake, couples often look to the location, theme and season of their celebration as a guide. A simple affair on the beach in the middle of summer might not call for the same type of cake as a formal evening affair in the winter. The actual design of the cake is up for grabs. Some couples may opt for the traditional three layers, while others may go for fewer or additional layers. Tiers can be of the same or different heights with the same or alternating designs. Some couples may request the design of their wedding cake incorporate the traditional flowers, either made of silk or frosting, while others may choose dots or scrollwork. Although once popular, basket weaves and swags appear to be on their way out, as do plastic columns and foil boards. Common cake flavors include carrot, chocolate, lemon, spice and vanilla, with many couples requesting each layer of their cake to be a different flavor. Some couples go an alternative route and choose unusual flavors like espresso, hazelnut and gingerbread. Frosting may be buttercream or fondant, though many couples today seem to favor the former. As for the top of the cake, couples no longer have to stick to the traditional bride-and-groom cake toppers.

They can go with flowers, sculptures or monograms. Monogrammed letters in silver or tin make for stylish cake toppers. For those that prefer bride-and-groom toppers, they’ll be glad to know that the traditional toppers have made a comeback and can be customized. Many companies now make toppers that match the actual bride and groom in hair color, skin color, age and more. These are just some of the hottest trends in wedding cake design. Whatever type of cake you choose, make sure it is flavorful and presented well. It should serve as a focal point at your reception, so place it in a prominent position and decorate the area around it.

Music To YouR EaRs

planning the wedding reception entertainment

Y

ou’ve spent several weeks checking out various professionals for your wedding. You’ve chosen a minister, a caterer and a florist. Now you’re looking into musicians. You thought you wanted a live band, but that may not be within your budget, so you are also checking out DJs. In fact, you may have a found a DJ already. Whether you hire a band or DJ, the decision-making probably won’t stop there. You may be asked to create a list of songs that you would like to have played at your wedding If you listen to music a lot, selecting songs for your wedding may not be too difficult. If you don’t, then you may find it a struggle and prefer leaving the matter to the band or DJ. Just make sure you tell them what music genres would best suit the tone of your wedding and your guests’ tastes. Punk rock might not work so well for an elegant evening wedding with several elderly guests. Classical music might be better. If you would prefer to select the songs for your wedding yourself and the band or DJ has no problem with that, make sure you do some research. Several Web sites are available that list popular wedding songs and offer suggestions for various wedding events and activities. You will definitely want to check those out. You will need several songs for the actual ceremony, including some for the prelude when guests are arriving, the processional when the bridal party is coming in, the interlude when the vows are being exchanged, and the recessional when the newlyweds are walking down the aisle. In all likelihood, you will want to try

to stick to the same music genre for your selections. Starting off the ceremony with a selection from the Carpenters and ending it with a selection from the Ramones might be a bit too much. You will also need several songs for the reception. Receptions in general tend to be more relaxed than wedding ceremonies, so you can mix it up a little. You don’t have to play all classical music. You can throw in some soft rock, some oldies and even some country music. Again, just be sure your song list offers a little bit of something for everyone. You may have specific activities planned for your reception, like the father/daughter dance and the garter and bouquet toss. When picking selections for these, try to find tunes that reflect the tone. For the first dance, for example, you may want something romantic, like Nat King Cole’s “Unforgettable,” whereas for the cutting of the cake, you may want something less stirring and more fun, like the Archies’ “Sugar, Sugar.” Whatever the activities, make sure your song selections befit them. Selecting the right songs for your wedding will take some time. Do your homework and don’t hesitate to get your fiancé and friends involved. They are sure to have suggestions. Don’t forget about the band or DJ you have hired either. They may be willing to do a lot of the work for you and come up with their own list of suggestions for the ceremony and the reception from which you can pick and choose.

Myths and Good Luck Charms

Wedding Folklore

W

ho doesn’t hope for good fortune on their wedding day? That’s why there are so many traditions and steps people take to ensure luck is smiling down on them for their wedding. Here are some traditions you may not have known about. n According to Greek culture, tuck a sugar cube into your glove on your wedding. The sugar will sweeten your union. n English tradition says that Wednesday is the best day to marry. Monday is for wealth and Tuesday is for health. n The groom carries his newly betrothed across the threshold to protect her from evil spirits. n Hindu tradition says rain on your wedding day is good luck. n For good luck, Egyptian women are known to pinch

the bride on her wedding day. n In Holland a pine tree is planted outside of the newlyweds’ home for good luck and fertility. n A law in 1775 said a wedding was not legal if the bride wore makeup during the ceremony. n Wedding and engagement rings are worn on the fourth finger of the left hand because it was long believed a vein ran from that finger directly to the heart. n Ancient Greeks and Romans said a wedding veil protected the bride from evil spirts. It has been a tradition to wear a veil ever since. n The term “tie the knot” comes from Roman times when the bride wore a girdle tied in knots that the groom was later able to untie. Some also believe it refers to the knots of rope that were tied to form the marriage bed
