What a bride wants: relaxation and sophistication favored choices for bachelorette parties (Bpt) - as a rite of passage, the bachelorette party has long gotten a bum rap. Stereotypes persist of the bride’s night-before-the-wedding gathering as a ladies-only version of the raucous bachelor party. Yet the truth is, a growing number of brides crave a tasteful, relaxing and deeply personal send-off for their single days. In fact, a relaxing getaway ranked high as an ideal bachelorette party for 59 percent of brides-to-be in the ultimate bridesmaids census. A snowy new year's day proposal

y name is Andrea and my fiancé Ben and I have been together for a little over one and a half years now. We met each other at a small bonfire in the middle of June at a mutual friend’s house. He had just graduated high school and I was going to be a Jr. in high school that following year school year. When we first met, I didn’t know how far things would go between the two of us, because Ben would be leaving a little over a month later to go to boot camp for the Marine Corps. However, over that next month, we grew to be inseparable. We both had that same weird sense of humor and quickly became the best of friends. When it became time for him to train in San Diego, he promised he would write to me, and that’s what I held onto for the next three months. After graduating from boot camp, he 10 | YOUR PERFECT WEDDING 2016

went across the country a few times and visited home every three to four months, ten days each time. Every time he visited home, our relationship grew stronger... This past time he was home, was a little different than all the rest. He asked me a very important question that would affect the rest of our lives. Ben asked me to be his wife. He asked me at a snowy wooded area on Lake Sallie called Dunton Locks in Detroit Lakes. I was told we were just going there to take a few family pictures with his side. Obviously, this was not the case. He told me when I got there, there would be a path that I should follow. I walked the stomped down path strung with white lanterns and signs I could tell he made. As I read the signs, tearing up, I walked closer to the man I would someday call my husband. At the end of the path, he was waiting for me down by the lake next to a huge oak tree, which towered over the bridge. He stood there smiling his smile and I heard the song Amazed by Lonestar come on. I walked up to him and he took my hands and told me how much I meant to him and how this place is now special for us, because of this day. Ben got down on one knee and after I said yes with tears in my eyes, put the beautiful ring he thoughtfully picked out on my finger. I heard screaming and cheering from his sister-in-law and her friend who were the “secret photographers”. They came over and congratulated us after catching the whole thing on camera. I have never been more happy than I was at that moment, knowing I would officially forever have him supporting me and by my side! Although we are both young, we’re aware of what a huge step marriage is. I consider myself extremely blessed to be ready to take this step at such a “young” age. I get to start my life with the person I love, earlier than most people do; for which I will be forever grateful. That New Year’s Eve day will forever hold a special place in my heart. The journey begins and I couldn’t be any more excited to start it with the man I call my best friend.

Great food Forget the pigs in a blanket, deviled eggs and other de rigeur finger foods long associated with bridal showers. Modern bachelorette groups are looking for dining options that are luxurious and delicious, or that accommodate lifestyle needs such as gluten-free or low-calorie diets. A valentine's day proposal doesn't get any sweeter than this

itting at the kitchen table in Mark’s mom’s kitchen looking at the most recent Shopko ad, eyeballing the best price on a Keurig I have seen since wanting to upgrade, I point it out to Mark, “Look! This Keurig is only $129 and there’s an additional coupon on the front for $15 off a purchase of $75 or more.” “Is that good?” he asks. “Yep…and it would be a good Valentine’s Day present.” “Oh you think so? I didn’t know we did Valentine’s Day presents.” And that is pretty much all the further that conversation went! Mark is many great things; romantic is not one of them. But I did my best. I planted the idea, folded the ad to that page and made sure he had the coupon. I did REALLY want a Keurig. Two weeks later I was in Perham for a job interview; my parents were planning on coming up the next day with a trailer full of my stuff since I was moving to Perham. They were going to help me paint the inside of the house I was moving into, and then on Sunday we would trek back to Iowa. Oh, and it was Valentine’s Day weekend. Mark’s only request that weekend was that we take my parents to his favorite place to eat-Zorbaz on Little Pine. I was informally offered the job that I had interviewed for and my soon to be boss said to me as I was leaving “I have a feeling this could be your best weekend ever!!” Well, it was off to a pretty good start! We got the trailer unloaded on Friday and started painting. We painted 14 | YOUR PERFECT WEDDING 2016

for hours and hours again on Saturday and actually lost track of time and were going to be late getting to Zorbaz. We had assembled a little gathering for my parent’s first visit to Perham and to Zorbaz. My parents, Marks parents, sister, nephew and niece were all there. We enjoyed some pizza and nachos. I can’t say I noticed anything out of the ordinary. Mark had gone out to get a refill on his pop, his niece Lexi followed shortly behind. Even when they came back to the table I didn’t pay any special attention. Mark started making a joke about trying to find my Valentine’s present in a machine in the game room, but that he couldn’t find one. I had laughed it off- even making a comment that that was ok he couldn’t find one, because a Keurig wouldn’t fit in a quarter machine anyway. He said “Well I was thinking more along the lines of a ring.” Again, I laughed it off. I didn’t even have a definite move-in date. We had been dating long distance for 2 years. I figured I would move here and we would see if we got along for longer than every other weekend! “Seriously, I looked for machines with rings, but they didn’t have any.” The

whole table laughs. Then Lexi (age 11) chimes in “When are you going to ask her to marry you for real? What are you waiting for anyway?” More laughter. Mark says “Actually I was thinking right now.” As I turn to him he’s holding a ring out. “Will you marry me?” Of course, I said yes! The whole moment was a blur. I was in shock and that’s not an exaggeration. My boyfriend who doesn’t like people staring at him, or attention on him just proposed in front of our parents and a whole restaurant full of people?! His whole family knew he was going to propose, but he got Lexi involved at the last minute for her “part”. He had tried to talk to my mom and dad all weekend, but in Mark’s words, “You wouldn’t go away so I could!”. I kind of liked that I wasn’t the only one that was completely surprised! People say you shouldn’t propose on a birthday or special occasion, and NEVER on Valentine’s Day. Apparently that’s cliché…turns out it’s one cliché I am absolutely, 100% ok with. To me, there is nothing unoriginal about our story. Mark proposed in front of our families, in a place that will always be important to us as a couple, and it was a complete surprise! It still brings tears to my eyes. I think about how he proposed with the wedding band instead of the engagement ring, and I smile when I picture his face when he figures it out. I thought all I really wanted was a Keurig. This Valentine’s Day you’ll find us at a special table inside Zorbaz enjoying a plate of Macho Nachos… as Mr. and Mrs. Jorgenson.
