Welcome

to WE Fest 2009

Can you believe we all made it? This is the year that we really needed something to celebrate, and what could be more perfect than great country music in the great outdoors? We want you to know how much we appreciate your willingness to spend your precious time and hard-earned money at WE Fest, and we promise you won’t be disappointed. The first thing you’ll notice when you get on site is the brand new stage and roof. We thought long and hard about this huge investment at a time when the economy is so uncertain, but we needed a new roof in order to bring you the top stars in country music. Their touring shows have gotten bigger and better every year, and we needed to be able to provide them with a stronger roof so we could hang all of their lights and video screens. The new roof allows us to bring you the best show possible. In the end, it wasn’t that hard a decision. We are enormously proud to present some of the finest talent in the world, under the biggest touring roof in the nation. Well, it’s not touring anymore because it’s found a permanent home at the Soo Pass Ranch. Having a roof we don’t have to put up and take down each year will also allow us to bring you some other great entertainment. The next thing you’ll notice is that everyone is going to have a little more elbow room. We’ve reconfigured most of the reserved seating areas to provide more leg room, expanded the general admission area, and added some concession booths to better serve you. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. It’s hard to believe that we are nearly at the end of another decade of WE Fest. Over the years the show has grown, as proven by the need to upgrade our stage for the third time. The stock market goes up and down, some people come to WE Fest for the first time, and some people just can’t take the crowds anymore. One year it rains and the next year it’s so hot you don’t want to move. That’s life – but for the past 27 years there has been one constant. WE Fest and great Country Music. Nashville keeps sending us great artists, people keep turning their radio dials and realizing that if you want to listen to some good songs, about things that matter in your life, sung and played by people who value talent over style, then it’s got to be country music. We are proud to be a part of that tradition, and look forward to many more years.

It Takes A Village To Build a WE Fest We want to thank all of the people who work tirelessly to put the show on, from the people who mow the grass, to the people who will clean the campgrounds and concert bowl following WE Fest. There are well over a thousand people working this weekend to make WE Fest a safe and enjoyable event. Our heartfelt thanks go out to each and every one of them.

Have a SAFE Weekend Many of the people working tirelessly this weekend are here to lend you a hand. We want everyone to have fun, just not too much, if you know what I mean. If you need help with anything at all, call the emergency number on your wristband. Calmly explain your situation, and stay there to wait for help. It’s a good idea to learn where your campsite is during the day, so you can find your way home after the show. Mark your tent, look for the closest pole numbers, and pay attention. If you’re lost, go to any employee and tell them you’re lost. They will get a Chaplain or Security person to help you get back to your tent. This is especially important if you are alone. Don’t wander around looking confused, just get some help. If you drove to WE Fest, but you don’t feel like you can drive home, don’t take the chance. Again, find a Chaplain, Security person, or EMS Medical person, and tell them you need some help. The Becker County Sheriff and Minnesota State Highway Patrol put in a lot of hours trying to keep the roads safe, and they need to get intoxicated people off the road. For your own sake, and the safety of others, please drink responsibly, and don’t drive if you’ve had too much to drink. GET HELP. Chryll Sparks F.A.C.E. Inc.

CMT - Cody Alan

Welcome Back Tom Katt We are once again proud to welcome back Tom Katt as the stage host of WE Fest Over the years Tom has become the one constant on the WE Fest stage. Artists come and go, many have passed on, but Tom Katt’s always here to keep the show rollin’. Joined by his lovely wife Lynn Kitty, (who is actually his boss at WE Fest as Stage Producer), Tom Katt’s an avid hunter, former pro baseball player, restaurateur, and entertainer, in addition to his annual stop at WE Fest. You can catch him and Lynn most nights at the Red Oak Steaks and Wine establishment they own in Lino Lakes, just a short shot from downtown Minneapolis or St Paul on 35 North. It’s a treasure trove of WE Fest history.

Froggy 99.9 Great Country Music All The Time We listen, and we hope you do, too. Froggy 99.9 is the only country music station in the Fargo\Moorhead market to be staffed by amphibians. They also play the best music, sponsor the best country music festivals, and definitely have the best lookin’ Station Manager, Michael Brooks. Seriously, Froggy is a valued WE Fest partner in more ways than one. They help us select artists, promote the WE Fest throughout the region all year round, and of course bring the same great talent and energy to the WE Fest stage that has earned them the number one slot in the Fargo market. Join us in welcoming Hoppy Gillmore, Anne Phibian and Jeremiah Bullfrog to WE Fest this weekend, and be sure to stop by their booth in the concert bowl for some up close and pers o n a l chat.

We are enormously proud to have been chosen by CMT to be part of their Summer of Music series. As part of that program, Cody Alan from CMT will be broadcasting nationally from the WE Fest. He will also be working with Froggy on the Main Stage once in while. You can meet Cody at the CMT headquarters in the VIP campground, so listen for stage announcements as to when he might be available. While your there you can participate in the CMT “Singing Bee” contest, or bring your friends and try to reach Superstar status on the country music version of the video game Rock Band. You’ll also have a chance to win an backstage Meet and Greet at the CMT party on Saturday night. Catch Cody Alan hosting shows on both radio and TV. Monday through Friday, he can be heard on CMT Radio Live With Cody Alan! Broadcast across America, CMT Radio Live originates from Nashville and is CMT’s premiere country music and entertainment radio show. Alan’s wit, energy and charm shine with big star guests and live interaction from listeners. Landing major interviews with Kenny Chesney, Keith Urban, Faith Hill, Taylor Swift and more, he asks the right balance of questions, including the untypical. Country artist Dierks Bentley says, “Cody’s show always feels fresh and current. Cody cares about country music’s past and future and has always worked to make his shows exciting, interesting and personal.”

The Twin Cities are K102 Country K102 has been supporting the WE Fest since our inception in 1983, and no matter how many other festivals come along, they continue to support the WE Fest year after year. We are proud to welcome the entire K102 team back to the show this year. We are excited to present one of K102’s top talents, and Wakeup Crew member Muss, as one of our illustrious stage hosts this weekend. Muss will assist Tom Katt with the many announcements that keep the show rolling, and interview artists for the Jumbotron pre-show interviews. An Owatonna, Minnesota boy, Muss has been in the radio biz since 1983, way back when WE Fest was born. If you don’t live in the Cities, you can always stream the K102 Wakeup Crew on your computer for the best in New Country. If you sign up to be a member of the K102 Country Club at k102.com, you can get advance information on upcoming concerts and some great deals on tickets as well.

Silverado

thursday 2:45pm

Silverado will be blasting onto the Main Stage at 2:45 p.m. today as the first band out of the chute into our fabulous Stars Shine in ’09 Thursday lineup. You can also catch them tonight at the Ranch House Stage where they will kick off a two-hour show right after Toby Keith’s Main Stage headliner show. That show starts around midnight and runs until 2:00 a.m. Wow! It’s actually been five years since the Silverado band made its debut at WE in 2003. Back then, they shook the Main Stage in the early afternoon and then worked the Ranch House Stage crowd with two rollicking, more intimate shows. Guitar player and one of Silverado’s two lead singers Terry Mackner was born and raised in Detroit Lakes. Like a lot of local kids, Terry grew up around WE Fest and worked for our festival by the time he was 15. “Back in 1989 I worked for WE Fest picking up trash in the concert bowl while the Main Stage was going full bore and people were partying,” he told WE Fest in ’03. “I’d look up at the Main Stage and think how way-cool it would be to some day sing from up there…then I’d bend over and pick up another crushed cup…and think there goes another crushed dream.” Before long, Terry was a full-fledged WE Fester enjoying the shows and camping. Terry knew 20 years ago what everybody else is fast finding out: America’s Best fest is the WE Fest! At one WE Fest, Terry was playing his guitar in the VIP campgrounds with a buddy. “…This dude came up with his guitar and started jamming with us. We didn’t know it then, but he was with Martina McBride’s band.” Not quite crushed like a discarded beer cup, Terry’s dream came true at WE in ’03 when the

already well-seasoned Silverado entertainers hit the Main Stage. After five more years of entertainment experience and life lessons Silverado is back at the Soo Pass Ranch. “Silverado is a five-piece country rock band that plays the best of current and classic country with a little bit of rock and roll,” Silverado tells the WE Fest in its update. “Silverado is not your daddy’s country band! We guarantee we will move you out of your seat and get your boots to the dance floor. Our band of killer musicians features two lead singers—Terry (also plays bass) and Martin Vigesaa (also plays guitar, steel guitar and fiddle)--and impressive harmonies (everybody sings). Bryan Aamold (steel guitar and fiddle), Charles Woodard on drums and Jason Wika on guitar make up the rest out the rest of the group.” Silverado’s full plate of summer gigs (available on their website) is scattered all over Minnesota and North Dakota including playing for WE Fest’s partner the Minnesota Twins at an autograph party; shows in nearby Erhard, Elizabeth and Elbow Lake (all neighbors to the south of Soo Pass Ranch); and Fargo and West Fargo (more WE Fest friends and neighbors to the west). While visiting that website, be sure and check out the photogs of the Silverado members filling and tossing sandbags while doing volunteer work to help save Fargo from flooding this past spring. (Kudos to Silverado!) Please welcome these musical pros, community helpers and WE Fest friends and favorites back to the Soo Pass Ranch to help your Stars Shine in ’09!

thursday 4:15pm

WE brought 32 Below back for this year’s Wednesday night Kick-Off Party, and if ya missed that grrrreat show last night, ya won’t want to miss 32 Below today when they tear up the Main Stage at around 4:15 p.m. as the second batch of stars in our Stars Shine in ’09 Thursday lineup! Last year WE had a hell-raisin’ time once again heatin’ up with 32 Below when they gigged for four hours at our Wednesday night Kick-Off Party for Feelin’ Great in ‘08. The freezer crew also kicked off our Main Stage line-up for Thursday and they were back at the Ranch House Stage closing down last year’s WE Festivities while winning the hearts of those WE Festers who were not already well entrenched as faithful followers in 32 Below’s loyal fan base. At Heaven in 2007, 32 Below was the last band to perform at our 25 Year show as our Silver Anniversary revelers reeled, rocked and rolled proving “The road goes on forever and the party never ends” as Robert Earl Keen so aptly wrote in his anthem. Montgomery Gentry told WE Fest this about 32 Below: “…On stage there are bands that hope for your attention, and then there are bands that grab you by the ears and demand it. From the distinct vocal harmonies, to the accomplished musicianship, to their professional demeanor, we were very impressed…” On a hot summer afternoon there’s nothing like a cold beverage to cool ya down, except maybe thinkin’ cool. When 32 Below made their WE Fest debut on the Main Stage on a hot WE Fest afternoon at our More in 2004 Triple Star Power show, the Fargobased band maintained their cool while putting on one heckuva hot show!

The group burst onto the stage of the local music scene at the end of 2001. This is 32 Below’s fourth trip aboard the Good Ship WE Fest and these home-boy favorites are another reason why America’s Best fest is the WE Fest!. The 32 Below band: Luke Nygaard (drums) grew up on a farm in between Ulen and Hitterdal, Minn.; Matt Aakre (lead vocals, lead guitar)— from neighboring Hawley, MN; Jeb Reinhiller (fiddle, mandolin, guitar, vocals) of Hazen, ND; and Nathan Stang (bass, vocals) of Hettinger, ND. Their debut album was the self-titled 32 Below, and their sophomore project, Don’t Look Back, came out in 2004. In 2006, 32 Below released their live CD/DVD This One’s for the Fans. And their latest album project, Stopping the Machine, is now available. All four albums can be easily obtained in CD or MP3 format. The band has sold thousands of CDs and thousands of downloads. In 2009, 32 Below beat out 300 other artists to take first on a nation wide contest at Eventful. com to open for Little Big Town on a date in their 2009 tour. They picked a show close to home in Green Bay, Wisconsin. WE Festers take notice: you will NOT want to be lollygagging in the campgrounds this afternoon when this great band makes its only appearance today at Stars Shine in ’09! Come on out and romp and stomp in some early-August 32 Below weather! WE’ve had beautiful sun showers at the Soo Pass Ranch in the past. You won’t want to miss the fourth of our historical, hysterical and very musical 32 Below sun freezes!

Sawyer Brown When Sawyer Brown hits the Main Stage at 6:15 p.m. today to help make your Stars Shine in ’09, they will make WE Fest history by being the only act that has performed at 10 of our 27 WE Fests! Sawyer Brown last came to the Soo Pass Ranch to help us share 25 years of WE Fest at Heaven in 2007. WE’ve been calling their fans Sawyer Brownies since Chyrll Sparks coined the phrase in ’96, and one of their biggest fan bases was built right here at the Soo Pass Ranch. Just as little elves bake crackers and cookies all night while you party, WE Fest bakes the best Sawyer Brownies.

Mark Miller (lead singer, dancer and spark plug band leader) always gets the crowd in a groove. The other founding member is our good friend Stephen Gregg “Hobie” Hubbard (keyboards and vocals). Joseph Smyth, II (drums), James Thomas Scholten (bass guitar), and Shayne Alan Hill (guitar), comprise the rest of Sawyer Brown, and they are truly one of he best bands in the history of country music.

It wasn’t an April Fools joke on Monday April 1, 1982 when Mark Miller & company founded Sawyer Brown, the revered rockin’ country band that zoomed to fame after winning the

grand prize on TV’s Star Search. These guys were the first-ever Star Search champions; the original American Idols. And, after performing over 4000 shows while touring the better part of three decades, numerous gold and platinum albums, and awards Sawyer Brown remains a band you can count on. Never ones to get above their raising, they have a deep appreciation for the heart of small towns, rural realities, lives lived in common places and truths so basic they go unnoticed. When Sawyer Brown made their WE Fest debut at Alive in ’85, WE knew they were going to be around for a long time. And they’re still around for the 27th WE Fest, so they’re surely doing something right. “Your festival is a well-oiled machine and just too much fun,” Hobie complimented the WE Fest with his usual smile, during a past visit. “Sawyer Brown and WE Fest are very important threads in the cloth of each others’ histories and we’re going to weave some more fun this year!” Rejoice, a 2008 Christmas album project, is the 21st album released by this amazing group that captured fan-voted industry awards for six straight years as top vocal band and has also picked up County Music Association (CMA) and Academy of Country Music awards. Mission Temple Fireworks Stand was the band’s 20th album. The title cut, “They Don’t Understand,” and “Keep Your Hands to Yourself” are three singles from that project that resonate well with Sawyer Brownies and WE Festers alike. Sawyer Brown has a reputation of being an act that nobody wants to follow. They have also built up a fan-base that shows up no matter what. “It’s crazy,” Mark Miller told the WE Fest. “It’s almost like Jimmy Buffett’s fans that come not because of the new record or the new song, but because they know they’re gonna have fun. We’ve got kids who grew up listening to their parents’

records coming now - and they’re totally into it. But that’s what you wanna do: maintain what you’ve created. When it’s showing people a good time, well, that’s a pretty great thing to have to keep up.” WE’ve heard and watched Sawyer Brown “keep up” for years as they popularized pulsating party songs like “Betty’s Bein’ Bad” and “Step that Step;” put their own stamp on classics like “The Race Is On,” “Six Days on the Road,” and “Lookin’ for Love;” and performed countless other hits as they blasted the airwaves and graced our WE Fest stage. In nine shows, Mark Miller has amassed marathons of musical miles right here on the WE Fest stage (including the old original red-painted WE Fest stage)! Congratulations to Sawyer Brown as they play their TENTH WE Fest!

Trace Adkins WE are proud to welcome honky-tonkin’ badonkadonkin’ Trace Adkins back to the Soo Pass Ranch. When Trace hits the Main Stage at 8:30 p.m. he holds the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Single of the Year Award for 2009 for his fourth No. 1 hit “You’re Gonna Miss This.” And when our six-foot-six friend

16

thursday 8:30pm

strolls onto the stage, he will do so as Country Music’s Sexiest Man according to a poll taken by Country Weekly mag last September. “Trace…was the clear choice—getting three times the votes of his nearest competitor for country’s hottest hunk!,” Country Weekly reported.

But all of those fans who voted Trace the No. 1 country male hottie have reason to weep. “With a wife and five daughters, the stage is the only place where I’m in control,” Trace likes to say. And control it he does. The bass end of his big beautiful baritone is bound to shake the Soo Pass Ranch from Viking to Lake Salle and from Northwoods clear down to the south end of the VIP Campgrounds for a third time. When you feel the ground shakin’ this evening—that ain’t no train comin’ down the Soo Line, its Trace getting warmed up. Trace has ten major albums under his belt including a Greatest Hits album which debuted at # 1 when released in 2003, American Man: Grtst Hits Vol. II released late in 2007, and his latest album of new stuff—X— ,released last November. “X” is the Roman numeral symbol for the number 10. Trace has scored two top hits with “Muddy Water” and “Marry for Money;” and the latest single from X is “All I Ask for Anymore.” “Ladies Love Country Boys,” a single from his 2006 album Dangerous Man, was Trace’s third No. 1 hit. Trace has sold millions of albums and singles. Dreamin’ Out Loud (his debut album in 1996) went platinum. That debut also helped Trace get New Male Vocalist from the Academy of Country Music and the TNN/Music City News Star of Tomorrow awards early in his career. “When I was singing five nights a week in beer joints I think I just developed tungsten vocal cords,” Trace told WE Fest. “I think those years of playing in clubs and not having a good monitor system and singing as loud as I possibly could, just to hear myself, served me well.”

Thinkin’ Thing,” “I Left Something Turned On At Home,” (both No. 1 hits) “Every Light In The House is On,” “Lonely Won’t Leave Me Alone,” and “The Rest of Mine.” In 1999 “Don’t Lie” was a hit and in 2001 he hit with “Chrome” and “I’m Tryin’.” He had another top hit with “Then They Do,” a song about kids growing up too fast, and the song’s success spawned a book of the same title, all dedicated to his girls. Tarah was born in 1985 and Sarah was born in 1989. Trace and wife Rhonda have three daughters: Mackenzie (1998), Brianna (2001) and Trinity (2004). “Honky Tonk Badonkadonk” was a No. 2 single in 2005. The song scored high in the Hot 100 and Pop charts, charted on US Hot Digital and US Ringtones and the video was a smash hit and won GACTV’s Video of the Year. All of this broadened Trace’s fan base and increased his already ever-growing success and popularity.

Early on in his recording career, Trace registered a string of hit songs including: “[This Ain’t] No

Toby Keith

thursday 10:45pm

WE Fest favorite Toby Keith makes his fifth visit to the Soo Pass Ranch tonight and WE’re mighty pleased to have him headlining our Thursday night lineup for Stars Shine in ’09. Since his last visit to WE Fest, Toby’s fourteenth studio album, That Don’t Make Me a Bad Guy, became his sixth No. 1 album and it has garnered him two No.1 singles: “She Never Cried in Front of Me” and “God Love Her.” A third single from the album, “Lost You Anyway” was at No. 12 on the Billboard Charts as the Offi-

18

cial 2009 WE Fest Program goes to press. In his career, Toby has racked up 18 No. 1 country songs and seven No.1 country albums including his latest hits package, 35 Biggest Hits, which, at press time, is charting at No. 23 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums after an astronomical 56-week run. Toby Keith made his WE Fest debut at Let’s Go in Triple O, on the Friday Main Stage line-up

and he was a smash. At Just For You in 2002 Toby was the Saturday night headliner for our four-day Love Your Country show. Toby Keith wowed us all right after the rockets red glared over the WE Fest from our 20th Anniversary fireworks display. Toby Keith has sold more than 25 million albums in this decade alone, untold millions of concert tickets and formed the basis for an entertainment empire that includes movies, restaurants, a record label and more…and BMI recently honored Toby for 50 million airplay performances of his songs, a figure that puts him in company with hit makers like Elton John, The Bee Gees and John Lennon! Some of Toby’s other No. 1 singles include three multi-week No. 1 hits from Shock’n’ Y’all: “I Love This Bar,” “American Soldier” and “Whiskey Girl;” his duet with Willie Nelson “Beer for My Horses” from the Greatest Hits 2 album has become a barroom anthem along with “I Love This Bar.” Prior to country stardom, Toby led the Easy Money Band on the Southwestern nightclub circuit. He did oil field work, bucked broncos and even played semi-pro football. He’s 6’4” and looks like he could waltz or slug his way across any stage, or any state for that matter. “I don’t think most of the other new country guys have worked nearly as many beer joints as I did,” Toby told WE Fest. Toby’s Honky Tonk University education began right in his Grandma’s bar and grill where he got interested in the musicians who played there. Toby came of age in Oklahoma City, but he was born in Clinton, Oklahoma--right on old Route 66. Toby chose music over football and came to Nashville with a tape of original songs in search of a record contract. “They told me my songs sucked, spanked me and sent me home,” he recalled for WE Fest In 1993 he got a record deal and began recording his own songs. He

exploded onto the country scene with four massive hits from his debut CD, three of them from his own pen. Toby was showered with awards from Billboard mag to BMI songwriting awards, voted Academy of Country Music’s Entertainer of the Year in 2003 and 2004 and he won the CMA’s Music Video of the Year Award for “As Good As I Once Was.” Toby Keith wrote or cowrote all 12 of the songs on Honky Tonk University; and all but two of the songs on Big Dog Daddy, which was also the first album produced by Toby and totally owned and released by Toby’s own Show Dog Label. Toby’s got 11 writing credits on That Don’t Make Me A Bad Guy, which speaks directly to the enduring relevance of his writing. Toby Keith is a living legend as a performer, and one of the greatest songwriters of his generation. As if that isn’t enough, WE hear he’s opening Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar in St. Louis Park in the near future. See ya there!

October Road

friday12:30pm

October Road is about as Minnesota as a band can get. They originated in a barn west of Little Falls only five short but well-traveled years ago and they are another of the many reasons why America’s Best fest is the WE Fest! WE are pleasantly pleased to have these guys back for their third trip aboard the good ship WE Fest playing a Main Stage gig at 12:30 p.m. today when they open up our Friday lineup for Stars Shine in ’09. The last time I bumped into October Road, they were performing in front of what appeared to be the entire town of Holdingford, Minnesota and a thousand other central Minnesota revelers who had ventured down into what’s known as “the Holy Land” (Holdingford’s about the only city down in that neck of Minnesota that doesn’t begin with “Saint.”) for a street dance at the annual Holdingford Daze 2008 Community Festival. Needless to say, the main drag of Holdingford was rockin’ and so was October Road. The band had only been together for about a year when October Road made their WE Fest debut on the Main Stage and the Ranch House Stage at Triple Star Power II Still Alive in 2005.October Road played on into the WEee hours of Sunday morning as they closed down the 2005 WE Fest. And they were back again to kick off Super Star Power Kicks in 2006 on the Ranch House Stage for a four-hour 9:00 p.m. Wednesday until 2:00 a.m. Thursday gig. They also played the Main Stage and another Ranch House Stage gig at Kicks in 2006. October Road’s band leader is Shawn Smalley who plays guitar and provides lead vocals, grew up in Little

Falls and tells WE Fest he “started singin’ at age five.” Ty Taylor plays a solid mix of Nashville “chicken pickin’” and straight ahead melodic rock riffs; the exceptional drumming skills of Mark Westby gives the band a solid anchor; and the bass player is Joseph Thiele –all three live in Fargo, ND. Their summer schedule (easily available on the web) tells you that October Road will be playing all over Minnesota and North Dakota this summer at fairs, festivals, saloons and concerts. Based on the fun the guys were havin’ last summer down in the Holy Land and the way they had that Holdingford crowd shaking the main street, WE strongly suggest you catch October Road at a festival near you. WE also strongly suggest that you get out of the campgrounds and into the concert bowl today to catch their Main Stage and only gig at Stars Shine in ’09! Be there or be square—12:30 p.m. Shawn Smalley shares this with WE Fest: “2008 was a very successful year for the band and the group has exceedingly high hopes for 2009. Already solidly booked well into 2009, perhaps this will be the band’s break out year and you’ll be seeing them on CMT and GAC! One can only hope!” WE predict and wish more success for OR! Their latest album project, Rise and Shine, was just released in May of 2009 and the solid self-penned songs and stunning performances can be heard on their MySpace spot. Give a WE Fest welcome to October Road! Rock on!

Jetty Road Within four months the Australian group Jetty Road will have traveled from Australia to Europe to North America and back to Europe playing dozens of gigs in some way cool places including spots like: Blackheath, NSW, Australia, Festival a Villeneuve de la Raho, France; Merrit Mountain Fest, British Columbia, Canada; Grand View Stage Resort, Alberta, Canada; Matte Keller, Bettenhausen, Switzerland; Zebra Bar, Maidstone, England; and WE Fest, Minnesota, USA! You will not want to miss this internationally renowned act when these talented Australians make their WE Fest debut on the Main Stage this afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Helping to make your Stars Shine in ’09 and digging the notion that America’s Best fest is the WE Fest, Jetty Road came here to perform music. They agreed to play another gig at the Ranch House Stage tonight! Immediately after tonight’s headliners--Brooks & Dunn--wrap up their Main Stage show, Jetty Road will be rocking the RH Stage from about midnight to 2:00 a.m. This show is guaranteed to be one of those great moments in WE Fest history—like when Trick Pony had ‘em hangin’ from the trees back at Let’s Go in Triple 0! You’ll want to tell your grandkids about this, so get on up to the RH Stage early, grab a cool beverage, grab some ground and get ready to jive with Jetty Road! Twin sisters Lee and Paula Bowman renowned for their rich harmonies, along with talented and respected multi-instrumentalists Julian Sammut and Simon Ross comprise Jetty Road. The four friends met while studying at Music College. Jetty Road was born a few years later

friday 2:00pm

when they began writing and recording their own music. Their music has been described as “a tapestry of rock, pop and country, with a hint of folk” and they are touring the world and “traveling a million miles” to promote their third album, Life at a Million Miles. Their previous albums, Full Circle released in 2005 and Dirt Roads City Lights released in 2007, saw the band garner the attention of the country music industry, both locally in Australia and on the international music scene. “I stopped retreating to the backline, and I went out and I started playing the front nine” together with “I’ve always played my cards just how I wanted” and “this time I’m digging my feet down in the sand” are lyrics that capture the high and lows of their sometimes crazy life, along the amazing roads they’ve traveled. Jetty Road has had strong chart success in Australia— No. 1 and No. 2 hits and many Top 20 hits with viddies and singles on country radio and country television. Jetty Road has twice taken home the TIARA Award for Best Group (2008 / 2009) and the Victorian Album of the Year at the 2008 Victorian and National Country Music Awards. In January 2008 they were honored with a finalist nomination at the 36th Country Music Awards of Australia for Best Group. And Jetty Road was invited to play for the prestigious CMA Global Artist Showcase during the annual CMA Music Festival in Nashville. Let’s give Jetty Road a great welcome and show ‘em some WE Fest hospitality!

Joey + Rory

friday 3:30pm

Joey + Rory are a married duo consisting of Rory Lee Feek and Joey Martin Feek. WE Festers are bound to be enthralled by the well-crafted songs and tight harmonies of Joey + Rory when they make their WE Fest debut at Stars Shine in ’09 on the Main Stage at 3:30 p.m. today. In lineage with a long tradition of married duos in American country music (Lulu Belle and Scotty, George and Tammy, Johnny and June, Tim

26

and Faith, to name a few), Joey + Rory are a perfect match for the Soo Pass Ranch where America’s Best fest is the WE Fest! The couple came into the country music limelight as finalists on CMT’s “Can You Duet” reality television contest show. After placing third on the show, the two were signed to Vanguard/Sugar Hill records. They released their debut album project The Life of a Song in 2008.

They are quickly becoming country favorites, sharing their beautiful harmonies and songwriting skills, along with their joyfulness and authenticity, to country music lovers everywhere. In addition to singing, Joey runs a restaurant with her sisterin-law outside Nashville called Marcy Jo’s Mealhouse. Rory is an established songwriter with cuts including Blake Shelton’s “Some Beach,” Clay Walker’s “The Chain of Love”and Collin Raye’s, “Someone You Used to Know.” In the latter part of the 90’s, Rory worked as a writer for Harlan Howard, legendary songwriter and Country Music Hall of Fame member. He went from there to Clint Black’s Blacktop Music and then started his own Giantslayer Publishing Company, with partner Tim Johnson in 2004. The Life of a Song, was released in October of 2008 and debuted at No. 10 on the Billboard Top Country Albums chart, and No. 61 on the all-genre Billboard 200. Its leadoff single, “Cheater, Cheater,” was originally recorded by the duo Bomshel. Kristy Osmonson, formerly one-half of that duo, co-wrote the song with the Feeks and Wynn Varble. Bomshel’s version was released as a single in early 2008 shortly before Osmonson’s departure. Joey + Rory’s version was released in September 2008, featuring a music video with a cameo by Naomi Judd, who had been a judge on Can You Duet. Rory also founded the independent label Giantslayer Records in 2004, on which Joey had recorded a solo album entitled Strong Enough to Cry in 2005. This album is now available as a digital download or CD on the Joey + Rory website. In 2009, Joey + Rory were nominated for the Academy of Country Music’s Top Vocal Duo award, and the CMT Music Award for Duo Video of The Year, for the “Cheater, Cheater” video. Listening to songs from The Life of a Song while looking over the Joey + Rory website, it doesn’t take long before songs like “Sweet Emmy Lou,” “Rodeo,” “Loved the Hell,” and the heart

rendering “To Say Goodbye” really start sticking to you the same way “Cheater, Cheater” did the first time you heard that song on the radio. Joey even manages to make “Free Bird” her own song, which is a very tough act to pull off. WE have been looking forward to seeing Joey + Rory live since we first heard “Cheater, Cheater,” and welcome the opportunity to introduce this incredibly talented due to the WE Fest audience. WE are warning you now – this is your chance to be a part of something wonderful, Country Music Legends emerging like butterflies, into the light.

Craig Morgan friday

When WE started booking the show last fall, Craig Morgan was on everybody’s list. Every radio station we called, every country music publication, all the country music super-fans we consult to see what’s new on the horizon. Craig makes the most highly recommended debut in WE Fest history. He hits the Main Stage at 5:45 today, so plan to be there. Craig Morgan’s five studio albums have accounted for sixteen singles on the Billboard Hot Country Singles charts. His highest-peaking single is “That’s What I

28

5:45pm

Love About Sunday”, the only No. 1 of his career, the first No. 1 for his then the Broken Bow label, and the No. 1 country music single of 2005 on the Billboard YearEnd charts. Five more of his singles have reached Top Ten on the country singles charts as well: “Almost Home,” “Redneck Yacht Club” (certified gold by the RIAA), “Little Bit of Life”, “International Harvester” and “Love Remembers.” When Craig Morgan was ten years old and on a school field trip to Nashville, he sang “The Star-Spangled

Banner” well enough to catch the ear of a distinctive older lady in the crowd. “She walked up to me and said, ‘Son, someday you’re gonna be a famous singer,’” Craig remembered this, two-plus decades later, when he was looking at a picture of that woman—Minnie Pearl—in the Ryman Auditorium dressing room that bears her name. He was getting ready for his first performance on the Grand Ole Opry. What Minnie didn’t know was that before his moment in the spotlight finally came, Craig Morgan would be an EMT, a contractor, a sheriff’s deputy and a Wal-Mart assistant dairy manager. He’d also spend ten years serving his country in the U.S. Army. Craig Morgan is one of country music’s most respected performers. It doesn’t matter if he’s jumping out of airplanes, putting gallon jugs on a refrigerated shelf or singing hits like “Redneck Yacht Club,” “Almost Home” and “Tough”—his honesty, humility and work ethic stand out as strongly as his talent. That’s Why is the title of Craig’s fifth album, and his debut on his new BNA Records label. From the evocative and instantly familiar single “Love Remembers” to the rural rally cry of “Sticks” to the church-choir epic “Ordinary Angels,” it’s the sound of an artist soaring to new heights as both a vocalist and songwriter, but with his steel-toed boots still firmly on the ground. The same cannot be said, however, for the tires of his Kawasaki motorbike. Craig isn’t ready to trade in his KX450 yet. Before most concerts Morgan jumps his bike across the stage. And he attended the 2006 ACM Awards on crutches after crashing in a race. Nashville reporter and industry insider Robert Oermann wrote, “Craig Morgan is country music’s champion of the Everyman—a loyal husband and father, unblushingly sentimental, tough enough to kick your butt if you cross him and the kind of friend everyone would like to have. As the song goes, “That’s why I keep swinging this hammer... break my back for a slice of that American pie…” Craig sings on That’s Why. His stout voice rings out with such authority and passion that you know the sentiment is no less true now that the hammer’s been replaced with a guitar.

As it turns out, selling records, being on the radio and playing some 200 shows a year has only made him embrace fatherhood and family more firmly. Craig has four children with his wife, Karen, as well as a daughter from a previous marriage; they live just a few miles from the farmland in Dickson, Tennessee, where his mother and father went on their first date. “Family truly is the thing that’s most important,” Craig Morgan explains to the WE Fest. “I love the music; I love singing and writing songs and producing records. But ultimately, I do what I have to do to take care of my family. Even someone who has the greatest job in the world would rather spend more time at home. I know I would, and I have the best job in the world.”

Taylor Swift

friday 8:15pm

WE Fest was thrilled when WE were able to book Taylor Swift for Stars Shine in ’09 making it two years in a row for this budding superstar. Taylor has had a very busy year since her last trip aboard the good ship WE Fest. Fearless, her second album project has broken more records in the music industry than a trap shooting expert with a double-barreled shotgun and a truckload of 78 RPMS. 30

At press time Fearless was holding the No. 3 spot on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart after spending fifteen non-consecutive weeks in the NUMBER 0NE slot on Billboard’s country charts. The album has also spent 25 weeks in the top ten of the Billboard 200, making Fearless one of the top five longest running number-one album in Billboard

history. That’s what you call a big, big record! It was certified Triple Platinum and sold over a half million copies in its first week after release! According to Nielsen SoundScan, Taylor Swift was the biggest selling artist of 2008 in America with combined sales of more than four million albums. (She also graduated high school last year). Taylor’s Fearless and her self-titled album finished 2008 at No. 3 and No. 6 six respectively, with sales of 2.1 and 1.5 million. She was the first artist in the history of Nielsen SoundScan to have two different albums in the Top 10 on the year end album chart. Taylor became the first country artist to top the two million mark in paid downloads with three different songs. Taylor Swift is the only female solo artist in country music history to write or co-write every song on a Quadruple Platinum-selling debut album. She plays a Taylor Grand Auditorium acoustic guitar made of koa wood, dances like she don’t need the money, and approaches her role full-fledged recording and touring artist with a mature grace that is uncommon for a teenager. Taylor will be 20 this December.

Milestone Award; and she has been nominated for other other ACM and CMT Awards.

Amazing stuff for a girl who grew up on a farm in Wyomissing, Pa, started singing at age 10 in karaoke contests, festivals and fairs, and picked up a guitar and started writing songs when she was 12. By age 14 she had a publishing deal in Nashville and the family moved to nearby Henderson, TN. Taylor started playin’ at the Bluebird Café, caught the attention of Last year at WE Fest Taylor made a real difference in music-industry veteran Scott Borchetta, and when some lives, taking the time to speak with some young he launched a new label, Taylor was on it and on her girls whose lives could use a little boost. Taylor’s way. WE’re proud to welcome her back to the WE charming mother hosted them on the tour bus, and Fest stage. you could not the believe the smiles. Meanwhile, Taylor has won a Country Music Association (CMA) Horizon Award 2007; Grammy nomination for Best New Artist; Female Video of the Year, Video of the Year and Breakthrough Video of the Year awards from Country Music Television (CMT); the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Top New Female Vocalist Award 2007. and Album of the Year 2009 (Fearless) and the Crystal

Brooks & Dunn Since Brooks and Dunn last played the Soo Pass Ranch in 2006, their magnificent album, Cowboy Town, stormed the country, yielding five huge singles including “Proud of the House We Built,” “God Must Be Busy,” “Put a Girl in It,” “Cowgirls Don’t Cry” (with Reba McIntire), and “Indian Summer.” “We came from pretty blue-collar backgrounds, so you had to dream some lofty dreams,” Ronnie 32 30

Dunn tells the WE Fest, talking about the emotional momentum that drives the music by these country music superstars. In a career of more than 20 No.1 singles, Dunn observes, “It was literally a fairy tale to think we could get to where things are now. I could tell you a thousand times when I hit the wall, but through persistence, we got there. I think for most people, it’s not about being the most talented. It’s about weathering the storm.”

“I love playing, singing and writing,” Kix Brooks says simply to WE Fest. “The fact that I walk away from shows and people tell me what a great time they had, that gives me a lot of joy. We’re doing what we want to do and people are enjoying it, so I like to think that everybody’s winning.” Has it really been sixteen years since those bootscootin’ boys were so good headlining Saturday night at WE in ‘93 that we brought ‘em right back again for More in ‘94’s Friday finale? The Stars Shine in ‘99 Saturday night card that had their name at the top was another great show, and they were another important chunk of WE Fest history when they closed down our four-day 20th Anniversary show at Just for You in 2002.

Fogerty and The Eagles. Before they were B & D, Brooks charted twice—a No. 73 in 1983 and a No. 87 in 1989; Dunn charted twice--a No. 59 in 1983 and another No. 59 in 1984. The two were paired by Arista Records to pen songs. Together or solo, they are amazing songwriters. After singing together on B & D are the reigning award-winning VOCAL demo records, they were offered a recording contract DUO of all time! They have won the Country Music and the rest is, well, country music history. Association (CMA) Vocal Duo of the Year award twelve times and the Academy of Country Music Some “experts” predicted that B & D was merely a (ACM) Vocal Duo/Group of the Year Award trend that would fade as fast as the Urban Cowboy sixteen times since they burst onto the scene in blip of the early 80’s or those line dance numbers that 1991. Kix and Ronnie held the ACM and CMA helped fire their early career. Unlike those naysayers, duo/group awards so long that it was jokingly called WE predicted in our 1994 Official WE Fest Program “the Brooks & Dunn Award”. B & D have also won that their ride was gonna be a long one. And here WE the Entertainer of the Year Award from both the are, together again, riding with Brooks and Dunn. CMA (‘96) and the ACM (‘95, ‘96 and ‘02). These Yee Ha! entertainers rocked the stage at five of our festivals and they will rock the stage once more tonight. Kix was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1955, sites Hank Williams, Sr. and Johnny Horton as influences, Steve Miller as a favorite singer and Layla by Derek & the Dominos as a favorite album. Ronnie Dunn, was born in Coleman, Texas in 1953, raised in Tulsa, Oklahoma, names his dad as a great musical influence, and enjoys Merle Haggard, John

Katie Armiger When 18 year old Katie Armiger makes her WE Fest debut at Stars Shine in ’09 on the Main Stage at 2:00 p.m. today, she will be taking a break from a whirlwind tour that includes 17 states in less than two months. Katie will be promoting her second album project, Believe, on this tour. Three singles have charted since Believe was released last year; “Make Me Believe,” “Unseen,” and “Trail of Lies.” About a year ago, Katie Armiger teamed up with the TV station Great American Country (GAC) for a wildly successful six-part exclusive web series entitled “Kapturing Katie.” Fans got a behind-the-scenes look at one of country music’s brightest new stars. Cameras followed Katie for several months capturing real moments surrounding the launch and release of Believe. Each Wednesday for six weeks, fans were able to check out a new three-minute, “Kapturing Katie”, webisode by logging onto the GAC website. Due to the success of the web series GAC teamed up with her for their most successful nationwide sweepstakes “Kapturing a Love Song with Katie Armiger” where a lucky winner got to write and record a song with Katie. The single, “I Guess That’s Love,” written by Katie, country music group Love and Theft, and the sweepstakes winner Stephen Shumacher, is available now on iTunes. Katie Armiger was born in Houston, Texas and was writing songs and poems in her journal by the time she was ten. She won grand prize in a Houston radio station

saturday 2:00pm

country music contest when she was 14 and got a shot at making a couple of demos in Nashville. Recording the demos morphed into a full-tilt album project. Her first self-titled album was released on Houston-based Cold River Records in the 2007. It was produced by Mark Oliverius, (who also produced the two demos she won as a prize), and other country acts such as Lorrie Morgan and Trick Pony. The first seven tracks on that debut album were co-written by Katie, Oliverius and Ashlee Hewitt, our home-girl from Lancaster, MN, (up in the northwest corner of Minnesota in Kittson County). Though 16 when Katie Armiger was released, Katie’s first single was “17 in Abilene.” Katie has been featured in numerous publications as an artist to watch including People magazine, Country Weekly, The Tennessean, Cosmo Girl, Seventeen.com, AOL’s The Boot, the Houston Chronicle, and ElleGirl. com. Her star is definitely on the rise.

Katie first came to our attention through the urging of Froggy 99.9’s Anne Phibian, who had caught her live show and told us that she was as good on stage as she was on record, and we really needed to book her for WE Fest. As far as we’re concerned, endorsements don’t get any better than that. So, thanks to Anne, we are earnestly telling you that this is another one of those up and coming artist shows that you don’t want to miss. You’ll be glad you rolled into the concert bowl a little early because it 41 will definitely be worth your while.

Kellie Pickler WE were absolutely thrilled when WE were able to book Kellie Pickler for Stars Shine in ’09. It’s like adding hot sauce to a great taco. Kellie is a beautiful, talented firecracker, who is absolutely going to blow up the stage. Kellie Pickler’s current single “Best Days of Your Life” was still climbing the Billboard charts when we went to press. The song is the second single from her self-titled sophomore album project, which has been on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart since last September, where

42

it hit No.1.

saturday 3:30pm

Since late 2005, Kellie has been living life in fast forward. Landing a spot on the 5th season of “American Idol,” Kellie made it all the way to the top six, a finish good enough to guarantee her a place on the American Idol Tour. Her unmistakable talent and star quality also earned her a recording contract in Nashville; and she has barely had time to catch her breath since then. Before the end of the tour Kellie was in her new label chief’s office on

Music Row, discussing her future as their new artist, a future that was taking off before she even had her seat belt fastened. She had just turned 20 the month before. Kellie recorded her first album in between dates on the grueling 60-city/90-day American Idol Tour. “Every day off I was in the studio,” Kellie recalls for the WE Fest. “Either they were flying out to meet me somewhere or I was flying back to Nashville to record. I had written five songs for that record—“I Wonder,” “My Angel” and “Red High Heels”—but every song I didn’t write, I had to learn in the studio the day we recorded it. I don’t remember anything about recording that album. It was all a blur.” That debut album, Small Town Girl, a reference to Kellie’s upbringing in tiny Albemarle NC, was released on Halloween Day, 2006, and Kellie was off on another whirlwind of radio visits, media appearances and concerts, meeting and rubbing shoulders with her childhood heroes-particularly Dolly Parton; opening Brad Paisley’s tour, where she became fast friends with another country newcomer, Taylor Swift. Kellie’s Small Town Girl album was certified Gold just three months after its release. A crucial part in getting where she is now was taking charge of her second album, and Kellie embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. “The first year after my record came out was a crash course in the music business. I was barely 20 years old, and I had to learn how to basically be the CEO of a company, the Kellie Pickler Company. I had no training for anything like that. I had never been anywhere and wasn’t exposed to anything outside of Albemarle. When most girls my age are picking what classes they’ll take and what sorority to join, I was trying to decide on a manager, a lawyer, a business manager, hire a band, record an album, sing in front of 50,000 people, and sell enough records to keep all that going and pay all those people who rely on you.

long.,” Kellie shares with WE Fest. “When I look back on who I was when I started in this business, I see a naïve and gullible girl. I was so uneducated about the world. I grew up in public and I made some mistakes. It’s so important to surround yourself with good people. I had to do some filtering personally and professionally. I built an all new team and when it came time to do my Kellie Pickler record, I was ready.” The last two years have taught Kellie that “when you’re starting out everyone thinks they know what’s best for you, that they know you better than you. And you’re so new you don’t want to make anyone mad. I wasn’t completely able to be myself,” she confides to WE Fest. “But this is me, this is who I am. I look forward to every day. I’m happier than I’ve ever been and I feel ready for anything.” It is always a pleasure to introduce a new artist to the WE Fest audience, and in this case, it is pure joy. DO NOT MISS THIS SHOW!

I know from the media that some people thought of me as ditzy, but you can’t survive in this business and not be knowledgeable, or you won’t be in this business very

Clint Black saturday 5:45pm

It’s been way too long since Clint Black graced the Main Stage at WE Fest. Scheduling conflicts have been the main culprit, but today WE are very proud to welcome Clint back today at 5:45 PM, after an eleven year hiatus. What better year than 2009 for a return of Clint Black since ’09 marks the anniversary of country music’s famous class of ’89, of which he was a stellar member. Taylor Swift was born in 1989, Keith Whitley died that year and WE Fest had its first of three Stars Shine in… shows…all important landmarks in country music history. But, 1989 will also be remembered for giving country music fans their first taste of Clint Black, Alan Jackson, Travis Tritt and Garth Brooks. Dubbed, “The Class of

44

‘89,” each of them had their first major hits during that year, and dominated the early 90s, increasing country music’s popularity and visibility like never before. Clint Black made his WE Fest debut at Just for you in ’92, was back for Still Alive in ’05, and kept us all Feelin’ Great in ’98 when he closed the show as our Sunday night headliner. Yep, WE had Sunday night shows back in ’98 and WE didn’t have an outdoor Ranch House Stage for late-night/early-morning action back then. All three of Clint’s WE Fest shows created memorable moments in WE Fest history and tonight you can expect more memories, as he treats us to a heaping helping of

some of the over 50 hits he has charted in his amazing career. To date, Clint Black has had nearly two dozen No. 1 hit singles, and almost as many Top 5 and Top 10 hits, all of them original compositions. The number of awards crowding his trophy shelf surpasses the number of hit records. And the number of music fans he has performed for in concerts through the years is staggering. Clint Black has had a profound effect on the music industry, not only through his own recordings, but also through the establishment of his brainchild, Equity Music Group, a record company he co-founded in 2003. He is a profound and prolific songwriter who has written, recorded, and released more than 100 songs; a benchmark in any artist’s career. He has sold over 20 million albums worldwide. As a musician, Clint Black is an accomplished guitarist, and humbly describes himself as proficient on drums, harmonica, bass guitar and any assortment of percussion instruments. Clint Black—even his name evokes a deep sense of history and place in country music and in the WE Fest. The 1989 debut of his critically acclaimed and fan endorsed Triple Platinum Killin’ Time marked a subtle shift in the country music industry, and, thanks in part to Clint Black, a return to the more traditional sounds of the country music genre. CMT lists this album as one of the 100 Greatest Albums in Country Music. That album, from a then unknown Texas-based artist and writer, boasted five No. 1 hits; unprecedented in any music format, and won Clint Black a collection of awards that included: Country Music Association (CMA) Horizon Award, CMA Male Vocalist of the Year, American Music Awards Favorite New Male Country Artist, Academy of Country Music (ACM) Best New Male Vocalist, ACM Best Male Vocalist, ACM Album of the Year (Killin’ Time) and ACM Single of the Year (“A Better Man”). For Clint Black, this was only the beginning. The Triple Platinum Put Yourself in My Shoes followed in 1990, and the ride continued. Still, he keeps it fresh. When he felt that things were becoming a bit stale and feeling a certain sameness in the late 90’s, he took a risk and shook things up by leaving his label of more than a decade, and taking a much needed break to reevaluate where he wanted to take his career. And more importantly, he and

wife Lisa Hartman Black decided to start a family. The birth of daughter Lily Pearl gave Clint a new perspective and vigor that affected not only his personal life, but his professional and creative sides as well. Clint Black devoted his time to nurturing his little family, and his big career. In 2003, he decided the best course for that career was to start a record company that was artistfriendly, and would be not only home to his recordings, but to other artists of a like mind and approach. Enter Equity Music Group. The release of Clint’s highly anticipated first album for the label, Spend My Time, received great critical acclaim and gave the company the credibility it needed. The label proved itself to be a little scrapper, taking on the big corporations with a flair and success that earned it Billboard’s No. 2 Independent Imprint of the Year and No. 4 Independent Label of the Year over all genres in 2006. In addition to Clint Black, the label was home to Little Big Town, whose first release for the label went Platinum. Besides Little Big Town, the label has attracted Laura Bryna, Carolina Rain, Kevin Fowler and Blake Wise to its roster. Clint Black is a super successful songwriter, singer and guitarist, who seems to have the ability to keep some balance in his life. He makes time for his wife and family, time to take care of business, and time now and then for a trip to WE Fest. I know this may be heresy when Clint writes such great songs, and The Eagles are such a great band, but man, I cannot wait to hear Clint sing “Desperado.” That alone is worth the price of a day at WE Fest.

Big & Rich WE Festers will be treated once more to a full-blown three-ring circus when Big & Rich hits the stage at 8:15 p.m. tonight. Comprised of Big Kenny and John Rich and Cowboy Troy and Two Foot Fred and their whole shuh-bang of rock ‘n’ rollin’ rappin’ rockabilly rhythm! It’s a great way to get exhausted, being overwhelmed right off your feet by a Big & Rich Show, and the boys have promised to help make all your Stars Shine in ’09! The last time Big & Rich visited WE Fest, Minnesota, USA was at our Super Star Power Kicks in 2006 show and they came in the wake of their sophomore album,

46

with Cowboy Troy saturday 8:15pm

Comin’ to Your City. Big & Rich might be getting bigger in popularity and richer than ever before, but just as sure as WE love butter-fried venison steak and batter-fried walleye cheeks here in Minnesota; B & R are still freaky, fun and far-out. Check out the song “The Freak Parade” from Comin’ to Your City. Freak Parade is also the name of the B & R’s Official Fan Club website. Since their last gig at WE Fest, B & R released their third and latest album project in June of 2007, Between Raising Hell and Amazing Grace, (a No. 1 album on the Billboard charts that’s been certified Gold). A single from the

album, “Lost in This Moment,” garnered their first No. 1 hit. And in September of 2008 they released their second compilation/fun album Big & Rich’s Super Galactic Fan Pak 2. John Rich released the album Son of a Preacher Man as a solo project for Warner Bros. in March 2009 and the single “Shuttin’ Detroit Down” made it to a No. 12 slot on the country charts. Since 2004, Big & Rich have been nominated for the CMA Horizon Award (twice) and the CMA Vocal Duo Award (six times) and the Academy of Country Music Top New Artist Award (twice) and the Academy’s Top Vocal Duo Award (six times). The B & R smash debut album Horse of a Different Color was released in 2004 and remained on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart for over a year, peaking at No. 1. The B & R song “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” from the Horse… album was a Billboard Top 20 Country Single for two months in the summer of ‘04. It peaked at No. 11 during WE Fest week and was the most heard campground fav’ at More in 2004. Appealing to all ages, “Save a Horse…” became a sing-along-with-the-jukebox barroom fav’ as well as a great dance tune from high school dances to tailgate parties. Early in 2005, the viddie of “Save a Horse (Ride a Cowboy)” hit No. 1 on both CMT and VH1, and it was nominated at the CMT Music Awards for Video of the Year and Breakthrough Video of the Year. When the pair first hooked up to write songs together, Big Kenny, the six-foot-three former carpenter, was fronting a wild outfit called lovejOi and had a rep as Nashville’s Universal Minister of Love. John Rich, shorter, slyer and younger, was a former member of Lonestar embarking on a solo career. They became friends and writing partners, and kept jamming at each other’s shows. Casual sessions turned into weekly Tuesday night gigs at a small Nashville saloon called the Pub of Love. Their story and this whole scene are in their songs. Their show is worth a thousand stories, but here’s an acorn shell preview: the Pub of Love sessions were dubbed the Muzik Mafia which has morphed into one of the most

exciting scenes that Nashville has seen in quite a spell. Surrounding B & R was, and still often is, a rollicking moveable feast of sidekicks and characters like: the sixfoot-five inch black cowboy rapper named Cowboy Troy; who is with them tonight, a former homeless drug addict called Limo Larry; and Tim the Electrician—a championship chair ride; and of course Two-Foot Fred, who is also with them tonight. Following their WE Fest debut at Alive in 2005 and immediate return to Kicks in 2006, rumors were everywhere about all the B & R campsite sitings—from train-dodge-dancin’ with Elvis on the Soo Line RR tracks over by Oatfield to line-dancin’ with the Lucky Liquor Pigs in Viking. Wild and absolutely unsubstantiated rumors about the artists joining the partying at a partyhardy place like WE Fest…gotta be nonsense. If you haven’t heard Big & Rich you are in for one big treat tonight, because they have one of the funkiest bands in country music. In addition to putting on a great show, if you close your eyes, you still will want to dance. Welcome back Big, Rich, Troy, Fred, and one of the hottest bands you’re going to hear all weekend.

Tim McGraw saturday 10:45pm

WE are so glad that Tim McGraw could join us this year at WE Fest. McGraw is a superstar, movie star and fourtime past WE Fest star – going on at Midnight one year after waiting for the rain to end, because he didn’t want to disappoint his fans

When Tim returned the next year, so he could get his full show in, he stepped to the edge of the stage, spread his arms wide, and the audience gave him a standing ovation. It was one of the most extraordinary moments of any WE Fest. Pure Energy.

Thunder roared, lightning cracked and the rain came down in torrents as WE Festers scrambled for dry turf and safe harbors. WE were beginning to wonder if Tim McGraw’s show was going to happen. Contractually Tim was not obligated to hang around ’til the rain eased up, and he had gigs to make farther on down the road. The loyal and soggy WE Festers who hung in there found out that Tim the trouper put on one of the finest shows in the history of WE Fest

With 30 No. 1 singles; ten multi-platinum albums; sales of over 50 million albums in the U.S. and Canada and millions more around the world; more CMA, ACM, Grammy and more other industry awards than his trophy shelf can hold, Tim McGraw is one the hottest acts in country music. He’s also a world-class family man, frequently touring with his beautiful and talented wife, Faith Hill, and their children.

48

Tim makes his fifth trip to WE Fest with The Dancehall Doctors---Tim’s outstanding long-time band. His latest album project was 2007’s Let it Go, a No. 1 country album that delivered four Top 5 hits, including the No. 1 single, “Last Dollar (Fly Away)”, and his current hit, “Nothin’ to Die For.” He also released two Greatest Hits packages since his last trip aboard the good ship WE Fest—one in 2006 and another in 2008, both of which were No. 1 country albums. Tim came to More in 2004 a month after his “Live Like You Were Dying” song hit No. 1 country single in the nation and one month before his No.1 multi-platinum album, Live Like You Were Dying, was released. WE Festers who were treated to Tim’s live performance of “Live Like You Were Dying” got a sneak preview as to why it was voted single of the year by both the CMA and the ACM. A Start, Louisiana boy, and son of pro baseball star Tug McGraw, Tim actually got his start by trying his luck in Nashville after becoming a self-taught guitar player and playing some solo gigs in hometown area night spots. He arrived in Nashville in May of 1989, the day his idol, Keith Whitley, died. He hit the local club circuit and wasted little time in establishing himself as a charismatic performer. Tim McGraw released his self-titled debut album in June 1992. His breakthrough came with his second album, 1994’s Not a Moment Too Soon. It was the year’s topselling country album and spawned a pair of trademark hits: the rowdy rocker “Indian Outlaw” and his first No. 1, “Don’t Take the Girl.” Tim won the Academy of Country Music awards for Album of the Year and Top New Male Vocalist later that same year. Tim returned for Alive in ’95 and his third album, All I Want, debuted a month later at No. 1 on the Billboard country album chart and spawned three No. 1 hits, including “I Like It, I Love It.” The album was followed by the Spontaneous Combustion tour, which became the year’s top-drawing country tour. The tour also featured opening act Faith Hill, who made her WE Fest debut just before Tim’s gig at Kicks in ’96. Tim and Faith would marry in October of 1996.

than five No. 1 singles, including “It’s Your Love,” which became the most-played single since Billboard began monitoring airplay; and “Just to See You Smile,” which became Billboard’s longest-running modern chart single, spending 42 weeks on the chart. Everywhere won the CMA Album of the Year. A Place in the Sun debuted in 1999 at No. 1 on both the Billboard Pop and Country charts, racked up four more No. 1 singles including “Something Like That” and “My Next Thirty Years,” and won the CMA’s Album of the Year and Male Vocalist awards. Tim’s first Greatest Hits collection, released in 2000 spent nine weeks at No. 1 and to date has also sold over eight million copies just in the U.S. (6x Platinum) and Canada (2x Platinum); and his Set This Circus Down album project was released in 2001. That project produced smash singles “Grown Men Don’t Cry,” “Angry All the Time” and “The Cowboy in Me.” Also in 2001 Tim McGraw took home the CMA’s Entertainer of the Year award, five Billboard Music Awards and his first Grammy for Best Country Vocal Collaboration on the “Let’s Make Love” duet with wife Faith. Tim’s film credits include: Friday Night Lights, Black Cloud, his first leading role in Flicka, (based on the book and TV series My Friend Flicka), The Kingdom, Four Christmases and the forthcoming film The Blind Side. Tim McGraw is a multi-talented superstar, and he sure ain’t bad to look at. WE know you’ll join us in giving Tim McGraw that unparalleled WE Fest welcome.

Wednesday’s Kick OFF is from 9:00 p.m. to 2:00 a.m. on Thursday. During the three days of WE Fest, we’re runnin’ one R.H. Stage show just af-ter mid-night until around 2:00 each early morning. When Thursday night’s Toby Keith headliner show is finished on the Main Stage—Toby Keith—Fargo group Sliverado will crank up about 12:15 to prove that there is indeed a silver-noted lining in them thar WE Fest hills. Get there early to meet the bands at the R.H. Stage, buy their t-shirts and CDs and get ‘em autographed. After Brooks & Dunn’s headliner show on the Main Stage on Friday, Jetty Road—all the way from Australia—will play a gig at the R.H. Stage until 2:00 a.m. Saturday.

This stage has hosted great local and national talent along with many surprises. As from the accompanyRocking at the Ranch House Stage. ing photo montage illustrates, WE were having a

WE Fest blast with 32 Below at last year’s Saturday night/Sunday morning finale. If that wasn’t enough, Ashlee Hewitt—just back home from being a Nashville Star top contestant, stopped by the R.H. Stage to jam with 32 Below and yuck it up with some of her R.H. Stage staff pals. Ted Fiskevold has handled the stage hosting duties since we started this way-cool stage back at Let’s Go in Triple O! TedF is also one of our in-house staff photographers and contributes his writing talents to write the artist bio stories in the Stars Shine in 2009 Official WE Fest Program you hold in your hand. Dancing is encouraged at this laid-back stage. Ol’ TedF the MC has been know to give away CD’s and t-shirts and other cool swag to WE Festers who have the right answers to country music trivia questions. Tim West is the stage manager at the R.H. Stage. You can see Hands-in-Cement monuments and autographs of many of the major stars who have performed at WE Fest and Spirit Fest Midwest productions over the past twenty-six years! The WE Fest Walk of Fame is located just below the Ranch House and across the sidewalk from the Ranch House Stage! Immediately after headliner Tim McGraw performs his Main Stage finale, heated-up WE Festers will head on up the hill to the R.H. Stage like cattle headin’ for the ol’ waterin’ hole on a hot day for nightcaps and mornin’caps and a trip to BoomTown. This boomin’-cool Fargo band will party with those WE Festers who want to make Saturday night a Sunday morning! You can sleep in late on Sunday so you won’t have to miss any of this Ranch House Stage action! Last year, new loves were found and formed, romances were born and grew, and old true loves matured all because of just one little slow dance out in front of a live band at the Ranch House Stage. This is the place to be!
