Boy cagers look to improve from last year Janu will be focal point of Hornet offense BY BRIAN WIERIMA brianw@dlnewspapers.com
The paint will be a hopping place for the Frazee boys’ basketball team, as they will concentrate of pounding the ball inside to senior center Dan Janu for the 2011-12 season. The tall and athletic post Janu will be a point of emphasis for the Hornets, who will be looking to improve off a disappointing 2010-11 season.
“We want to have a quick-strick offense...” by Jason Reierson “We’ll be going to Dan a lot and will run him from rim to rim,” said Frazee head coach Jason Reierson. “We want to have a quick-strike offense and if we don’t get an easy bucket, pull it out and have some long possessions.” Juniors Zach Nelson and Cody Nordquist also return with some solid experience and will help anchor the backcourt, which will have several players cycling through. Senior Beau Hanson also returns with some experience, along with sophomore Cory Wokasch. “We do have some concern of taking care of the ball and limiting our turnovers,” Reierson said. “Defensively, we’ll go man-to-man a bit and mix it up, as well.” The Hornets will focus on just improving off of last year and enter the season with a good attitude and positive outlook. “We want to be competitive in games,” Reierson said. “The Heart O’Lakes Conference is as tough as ever and the section will also be pretty good.”

Seasoned Lady Hornets ready to run Frazee returns majority of 2010-11 scorers BY BRIAN WIERIMA brianw@dlnewspapers.com
With over 90-percent of their scoring back from last year, the Frazee girls’ basketball team enters the 201112 season with higher expectations. The big trio returning for the Lady Hornets are all entering their third year on the varsity, which include ju-
“We hope to have a faster pace and the ability to throw some full-court pressure on opponents,” the Frazee coach added. Even though Taylor Tappe is only a 5-5 post, she has a knack of being at the right spot and the right time, Conzemius said. “Really, I’m not worried about our height, because we are a good rebound-
“We are expecting much of our scoring to come from Alexis, Ashley and McKinzie...” by Dave Conzemius, Head coach niors Alexis Tappe, Ashley Bachmann and senior McKinzie Tangen. All three provide a strong scoring presence, as Tappe was one of the team’s leading scorers, while Bachmann has drained 109 three-point shots the last two seasons. Sophomore Taylor Tappe returns will solid experience at the post position, while junior Katie McCorquodale is back in the backcourt. “We are expecting much of our scoring to come from Alexis, Ashley and McKinzie,” said Frazee head coach Dave Conzemius. “They will be providing lots of leadership.” Alexis Tappe and Tangen will each see time at point guard, while they also can play post to provide that everimportant inside-outside duo threat capability. With the Lady Hornets being more athletic and quicker, than possessing size, Conzemius is hoping for more of an up-tempo style of game this season.
ing team.” The big factor this season will be installing a killer instinct into the team, with the ability to finish off games. “In the past, we have had a tendency to build a lead and then relax and let the other team back into the game,” Conzemius said. But with Alexis Tappe and Tangen each taking care of the ball from the point guard position, turning the ball over should be lessened overall. Defense has also been a point of emphasis for the Lady Hornets, as the first week of practice proved. “The first four days, we did nothing but work on defense,” Conzemius said. “We want to improve our full-court pressure and man-to-man defense.” Depth is also a strength, with juniors Heidi Seeger, Jeni Bergstrom and senior Brianna Nelson all being an integral part of the team. Freshmen Josi Tappe and Kennady Barlund will even inject some playing time
and players who can also run the floor. With the experience and depth being solid, Conzemius wants to see his team take the next step and post a winning record this year, despite playing in a very rugged Heart O’Lakes Conference. “We would like to earn a high seed in the playoffs and not be a one-anddone team,” Conzemius added.

Hornets defend title with heavy hearts Schermerhorn will be on minds of teammates BY BRIAN WIERIMA brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There will be more on the minds of the Frazee wrestling team members than just their defense of the Hornet’s Class 1A state championship this season. The season started out with a black cloud over the Hornet wrestling team, as one of their top wrestlers — junior Myrel Schermerhorn — was involved in a tragic car accident, which resulted in serious injuries. Schermerhorn is now in a fight for his life, as he is recovering in a Fargo
shock and grief of the ordeal.” While Schermerhorn will not be left out of his teammates’ thoughts and prayers, getting back on the mat is a healthy way to cope with the unfortunate accident. The Hornets, who were Class 1A Co-Champions with Jackson County Central, was voted as the No. 2 team, behind the Huskies, in the preseason polls. The Hornets have six wrestlers ranked in the top 10 of their respective weight divisions, including Schermerhorn’s slot at 145. But now it’s time to start over for
“They guys are confident in themselves and they believe they can get back to that position from last year...” by John Barlund, Head coach hospital, while his teammates will start the 2011-12 season with heavy hearts. “It was definitely a hard way to start out the season,” said Frazee head coach John Barlund. “The first couple of days of practice were very tough. Unfortunately, tragedy happens and you have to keep moving forward, while we keep Myrel in our hearts and thoughts.” Schermerhorn entered the season ranked No. 9 at 145 pounds, but now there obviously is more important thoughts on his teammates’ minds. “The first couple of days, we had some time to reflect on ourselves and regroup our thoughts,” Barlund said. “The inspiration to do well for him is there, but we are still dealing with the
the Hornets, who were able to complete their quest at the top of the mountain last year. “It takes a lot of energy and effort to get where we were last year, it was rewarding, but now we have to start over,” Barlund said. “These kids know there are a lot of guys gone from last year’s team, so there will be a different plan this season.” The Hornets are also transitioning to the new weight classes, which starts this season. The new weight classes include an added division in the heavier weights. “I think everyone will have a hard time filling their upper weights, not just us,” Barlund said. The strength of the Hornets will once again be depth and strong lower

weight classes. Byron Byers will be a spark at 106 pounds, while No. 6 ranked freshman Isaac Schermerhorn will be strong at 113 pounds. “Austin Skillings can also wrestle at 113-120,” Barlund added. At 126 pounds, Jordan Ketter returns as a section champion, while Hunter Sorenson will try and crack the varsity lineup at 130 after wrestling to the ninth grade state meet in 2011. Other top-ranked Hornets include No. 2 ranked Bruce Lemon, who will be a force at 138, after finishing sixth in state last season, while senior Rij Koehnen returns as the No. 4 ranked 152-pounder. Senior Cody Piper also will be a vital component to the heavier weights as the No. 8 ranked 160-pounder, even though he will start the season with a shoulder injury. Senior Rick Brandt caps the stateranked Hornets as No. 5 at 220. For the majority of the Hornets, though, they have wrestled in some big matches and will not be awe-struck when they get to that point this season. “They guys are confident in themselves and they believe they can get back to that position from last year,” Barlund said. “We are starting out with five guys injured, so we need to get healthy and get them back on the mat.” For now, putting effort into defending their 2010 Class 1A state championship has enabled the Frazee wrestling team to focus their energies on a good cause, while still keeping their fallen teammate in their hearts and minds.

Frazee gymnastics program on the rise BY BRIAN WIERIMA brianw@dlnewspapers.com
Four are back to anchor the Frazee gymnastics team, which is growing in numbers which signifies the program is making yet another step of progression. The Hornets will enter the 201112 season with four gymnasts who saw plenty of varsity action last year in sophomores Montana Osterman, Kirsten Tollefson, freshman Jerica Totland and Morgan Leine. “We should be improved on floor and will have to work on our bar routines,” said Frazee head coach Amie Erickson. “We should also have at least three girls going all-around, too.” The team’s vault will be a strong point this season, while the floor and beam will need some work. “We need less falls during our beam events,” Erickson said. “But our first goal is to have a full varsity and junior varsity lineup, which is something we haven’t done before.” There are 14 girls out for the gymnastics season, which is an improvement from past years. Numbers have improved with six first-time gymnasts out, with Totland and Osterman looking to be the Lady Hornets top scorers. “We have several first-timers out with some good, natural talent,” Erickson added. The Hornets also have opted out of the Mid-State Conference and will have a lighter schedule, as the program matures. “It saves money for traveling, since

The Hornets will have meets against schools more their size in Morris, Park Rapids and Long Prairie.

dance team SCHEDULE
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
For the last five seasons, the Frazee Fly Girls Dance Team has reached the apex of qualifying for the state meet and trip No. 6 is as realistic as it comes. The four seniors on the team will be leading the way in Elizabeth Anderson, Jena Rader, Kayla Sprouls and Caitlin Wirth. “We have a strong team with excellent leadership in our captains and veteran dancers,” said head Dance Team coach Ta Fett. “All of our varsity dancers have a lot of experience to bring to the floor.” Anderson is the Fly Girls’ most seasoned dancer, with five trips to the state meet, while being a member on the varsity team the last six years. She was named to the AllTournament Jazz Team in 2011 and has been a captain for the last two years. Rader is a four-year varsity dancer and has competed in the state meet the last two. She was named All-Conference and All-Around Best Dancer in Jazz and High Kick. Sprouls and Wirth each have been competing on the varsity the last two seasons, while the latter was named All-Tournament High Kick in 2011. With the strong senior leadership being a key component of the Fly Girls, Fett said the season will be determined by the full team. “Competitive Dance is in every way a true team sports,” the Frazee coach

DL gymnastics ready to unleash young guns BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
With the departure of two-time state champion Amy Crawford, the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team has a big hole to fill for the 2011-12 season. But excuse the Lakers if they are not too worried about it — and that is nothing against DL’s first-ever state champion, either. The Lakers are once again stacked and loaded to make yet another run at eight-straight state champion Perham,
“Jess is highly motivated this season and she is looking to improve on her own state placings last year,” Zamzo said. Stelter’s senior teammate, Natalie Hoffert, missed the entire season last year after she broke her ankle in the first meet of the year. But a strong offseason of endless work in the gym will show she is back to where she was two years ago, where she was a state qualifier as well. “Natalie will show everyone what they were missing last year,” Zamzo
“This group is as capable as any other one in the past to knock off Perham.” by Steve Zamzo, head coach with highly-skilled gymnasts in every event. “I think we will be strong in every event,” said DL head coach Steve Zamzo. “This group is as capable as any other one in the past to knock off Perham. “That’s not saying we are taking anything lightly, because we are still the underdogs, since Perham are the eight-time champs.” The Lakers will have both top-level experience and youth in the same lineup. Senior Jess Stelter is a seasoned state competitor and took fifth on the bars last year. She will lead the Laker contingent as an all-around performer.
said. There shouldn’t be an event in which the Lakers are not deep or strong, but if there was one, it would be the floor. But there will be improvement by the younger Lakers who had to fill in for injured teammates last season. Eighth grader Jordyn Peterson stormed onto the scene during the 2010-11 scene and looks to be even better in her second year of varsity as an all-around performer. Freshman Allison Berg returns after a strong year in vault, as well as the three other events. Freshman Katie Crawford adds valuable depth as an all-around gymnast, while seventh grader Thia Olds

comes in with a strong bar routine. Another seventh grader, Leah Chavez, comes in with potential of being an immediate contributor as well. The depth just keeps going with freshmen Morgan Eiter and Hannah Okeson as point-scorers, with the former having a solid season last year on beam. There will be plenty of competition just in practice to form the starting five for each meet. “We will have a consistent five starting, but it’s still early and they will have to earn those spots,” Zamzo said. “We will be going with our best five in each meet.” The big white elephant in the room, of course, is trying to unseat Perham as the Section 8-1A champions.

The Lakers will have plenty of opportunities to see how they measure up against the Yellowjackets, starting with the season-opener in Perham for the Jackie Mann Invite. The two teams will also see each other five more times, including the Mid-State, Section True Team and Section 8-1A meets. “The key will be to be consistent, they’ll need to be solid in each routine and know their routine well,” Zamzo said. The Lakers will have three home meets this season, including Dec. 16 against Park Rapids, Jan. 20 versus Perham and Feb. 4, with Bemidji. “We strengthened our schedule some, so we can see more state-caliber competition,” Zamzo said. “That will make us a better team.”

Lakers ready to make another run
DL senior trio to lead a talent-laden boys’ cager squad BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
The 2010-11 season was nearly a historical one for the Detroit Lakes boys’ basketball team, as they came up just one game short of earning the Lakers’ first berth in the Class 3A state playoffs in the modern age. But unfortunately for the Lakers, St. Cloud Apollo proved to be too fast
ing scorer in senior swingman Joe Mollberg returns with his 449 points, 178 rebounds and 72 assists. Also back is senior post Brian Labat, who will fill some of the need offensively, while maintaining his strength in rebounding with 200 from last season. Senior guard Rick Hutchinson and junior Kirk McLeod also return with plenty of seasoning to make the Lakers
“Losing Josh is one big spot we will need to fill... We have several players fighting for that spot, but everyone will have to chip in to fill his shoes.” by Robb Flint, head coach and too big, as they ended one of DL’s best seasons in decades with a record of 21-8. That doesn’t mean all is lost, as four of the six main contributors are back for the Lakers this season — despite losing a big piece from last year’s team in Josh Stalberger. “Losing Josh is one big spot we will need to fill,” said DL head coach Robb Flint. “We have several players fighting for that spot, but everyone will have to chip in to fill his shoes.” Stalberger was the team’s secondleading scorer with 427 points, while being one of the team’s leading rebounders with 172. DL also lose two of their big contributors in the backcourt in point guard Connor Hedstrom and Connor McLeod. But the cupboard certainly isn’t bare for 2011-12, as the Laker’s lead-
formidable once again in the backcourt. “We will be able to score points, I’m pretty confident in that,” Flint said. “The question is if we can play defense like we did last year. We are hoping our defense leads to more offense.” Mollberg and Labat will each be match-up nightmares for opposing defenses, with both possessing strong inside-outside talents offensively. “Joe is very hard to guard because he is such an inside/outside threat and he can run as the three or four guy, depending on matchups,” Flint said. “Brian is such a strong and athletic player and he rebounds so well. He also has been working on his jump shots, so he can be a perimeter shooter and hit his 15-footers.” Hutchinson brings back his deadly aim from beyond the three-point arc, after shooting 42-percent from that
range last season. Flint wants Hutchinson to become a little more aggressive with his shooting, as well, and take more shots. “Rick and Kirk (McLeod) do compliment each other well in the backcourt,” Flint said. “Rick also should have some more shots with Joe and Brian each seeing a lot of defensive attention.” Flint added Kirk McLeod returns as DL’s best defensive player and he will draw the duty of guarding the other team’s best guard threat. “He’ll be up for the challenge,” the DL coach included. Depth is still not settled, as a bevy of players are vying for playing time. Those include seniors Tyler Baukol, Nate Bausman, Kyle Singer and Luke Morgan playing the inside positions. “Nate Bausman is coming off a shoulder injury and he provides us with good, physical play,” Flint said. “Kyle Singer has good length and can jump well and (junior) Aaron Marsh will be a five-man post player.” Senior Jake Hoganson will also

provide strong work ethic in the backcourt to spell Hutchinson or McLeod. Others who will see time on the floor include Derek Long and Shawn Noonan. “We have many younger players also who can play their way onto the floor, as well,” Flint added. The Lakers will see a new section look, with St. Cloud Apollo, Bemidji and Rocori out, with Thief River Falls in, along with the usual teams of Little Falls, Sartell and Fergus Falls. “There will be no head over heels favorite in the section and we hope to be right in there,” Flint added.

Experience and talent makes DL better BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There are a bevy of varsity minutes logged on the feet of the four Detroit Lakes seniors on the Laker girls’ basketball team, which ultimately has created some higher expectations in the last several years. The Laker quad of Kayli Muckenhirn, Courtney Hedstrom, Courtney Gray and Makensie Gedrose will be a strong core for the Lakers, as they head into the 2011-12 season. “We have a nice nucleus back, with our four seniors being the key,” said
turning as last year’s team leader with 306 points. Gray was the third-highest scorer with 184 points, while point guard Hedstrom was fourth at 178. Muckenhirn and Gray give the Lakers a dual threat capability, with both being able to score from the inside and outside, thus creating some good mismatches for opposing defenses. “Muckenhirn can score from the inside and outside and she has been one of our leading scorers the last two seasons,” Hoganson said. “Courtney (Gray) has been working hard in the offseason to improve her perimeter
“We have a nice nucleus back, with our four seniors being the key... Our expectations are quite high because of our experience returning” by Mike Hoganson, head coach DL head coach Mike Hoganson. “Our expectations are quite high because of our experience returning.” But the Lakers will also have to rely on some of the upcoming talent in the underclassmen, because DL lost a slew of rebounds which were recorded by last year’s senior class. Those younger players who will be counted on in filling in the board numbers include junior Trisa Hutchinson and sophomore Shay Neilsen. “Trisa Hutchinson is a player who never gets outworked, and Shay provides our post position with good size and strength, which we haven’t had there in a while. “Both will be battling on the boards for rebounds.” But in the end, the team’s success will depend on the four seniors. The Lakers do retain the majority of their scoring, with Muckenhirn re-
game and she will be used as a wing and post. “She has proven she can shoot from the outside and has improved her ball handling to drive to the bucket.” Hedstrom also took some leaps as DL’s court general last year, adding a potent three-point shot, in which she sunk a team-high 44 last year. “Courtney is a two-year starter at point guard and that is invaluable experience at that position,” Hoganson noted. “She isn’t afraid to take the big shot, as she proved last year against Little Falls (in the playoffs). “The point guard position is also all about making good decisions.” Gedrose carved out her role last season as the team’s most relentless defender. She will reclaim that role, since she will be guarding the other team’s best scorer on a nightly basis. “Makensie just goes and goes and
she will be one of our best defensive players again this season,” Hoganson said. The front court additions of Hutchinson — who saw plenty of varsity time last season with 94 points and 112 rebounds — and Nielsen will also be key during the very rugged schedule DL will have to play this season. “Trisa has worked very hard on her rebounding and she also can score from the inside,” the DL coach said. “Her perimeter defense also has really improved.” Junior post Karli Kerzman returns after missing a season with a knee injury. She will be back at 100 percent and has already shown plenty of improvement in the preseason, Hoganson said. The Lakers will also need to look to their bench for depth, since they are looking for an up-tempo game where they will be running the floor as well as implementing a full-court press at times. Juniors Marissa Bridgeman, Megan Lindquist and Brooklyn Thompson will each see valuable minutes, while sophomores Brooke Olson and Matty Tschider will also contribute. One aspect which will be challenging is the schedule the Lakers will playing, especially in the front half of the season. They open against DilworthGlyndon-Felton at home Nov. 26, while

Section 8-3A contenders Thief River Falls, Alexandria and Fergus Falls are also upcoming in the front part of the season. “It’s a brutal schedule, so mental toughness will be key because there will be many close games,” Hoganson said. “The Mid-State Conference will also be tough, so there are no cream puffs on the schedule.” Tim Swenson returns as the assistant coach, and will also be the team’s defense specialist, while Barb Oistad will be the B-team coach. New addition Jossey Bergan will also be an assistant and will provide the Laker guards will great experience, as she was a two-year starter in the University of North Dakota women’s basketball squad’s back court.

Building Laker team looking to peak BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
The build has been gradual through the last few seasons for the Detroit Lakes girls’ hockey team, but the 201112 season could be the one in which the payoff can occur. The Lakers do return a host of experience, but not just that, talented experience. There also will be a new head coach taking the reins in former Laker hockey great Gretchen Norby, who will supply a fresh, new outlook after taking over for Dan Maloney, who helped build up the DL girls’ program from the ground level up. “I’ve already seen the experience they bring and the intensity they have shown thus far in practice,” Norby said. “One key is they will need to play with confidence.” Putting the puck in the net shouldn’t be as a big a problem as it’s been in the past, with 2010 All-State Honorable Mentioned Brianna Seebold back in the mix. The senior forward collected 53 points in the 2010-11 season, which included 32 goals and 21 assists. The first line will have a bit of a change, with junior Callie Johnson moving from forward back to defense, while Seebold will skate with junior Emily Payne and first-year eighth grad player Hailey Sonstegard. Johnson will provide the Laker defense with quick skates and also add some scoring punch from the back-
end. “Callie’s style of play allows us to put her in any position and she will play well,” Norby said. “Playing defense will aid her to be able to see more of the ice and she will also give us some offense from her defensive position.” Payne returns with good varsity experience, as well, along with speed and a hard-nose style of play. Norby wants her second line to be her “grinder” line, so she brought freshman Emily Seebold up from her defensive position to a forward spot. Sophomore Sydney Haman will also provide an offensive spark. “I expect the second line to score goals,” Norby included. The third line is still up in the air, but Norby will be counting on the group not to be scored upon and add a goal here and there. “You need three lines to have the ability to score,” the DL coach added. With the addition of Johnson, the defensive unit will be a strength of the team. Senior Emily Raboin returns with plenty of experience, along with senior Heidi Nelson. “Emily is a strong, solid defensive player and she can also bring an offensive spark,” Norby said. “In the past, the defense hasn’t been our strongest suit, but we are looking to change that.” Jeff Norby, Gretchen’s father, will be the defensive coach and in charge for the unit’s improvement. The goaltender position will be a
fluid one for the early portion of the season, but it will be the focus of the season. “This year, we will be building our team around the goalie,” Norby stated. Junior Veronica Roy and freshman Veronica Badurek each have seen good ice time between the pipes, as Norby is looking for one of them to take a hold of the job sometime this season. “Those two are providing healthy competition with each other,” Norby said. “I challenge them daily and they are showing me what they have. I’ve seen the experience they bring and the intensity both have brought to practice.” The expectations are higher this season, as well, with the experience

the Lakers are bringing back. “The girls’ goals were not to get shutout, ever, and try for some shutouts on the other team,” Norby said. “The key to every game is we can’t start flat and dig ourselves a hole.”

Laker icemen to have lots of new faces BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There will be plenty of new faces in new places as the Detroit Lakes boys’ hockey team is looking to start a rebuilding process with some skilled and talented youthful players. The scoring for the Lakers may have taken a hit with the loss of All-State Honorable Mentioned Nate Baker’s 46 goals and 30 assists. But there will be a pretty solid filler for DL’s scoring attack in the form of senior forward and 2010-11 All-State Honorable Mentioned Alex Mason, who notched 18 goals and 41 assists last season. Mason isn’t your ordinary highscoring forward. Even though he does possess some fast, quick moves, his strength is, well, his strength. “We are fully expecting great things from Alex,” said DL head coach Chris Denardo. “He has added more muscle and is up around the 220-pound area. “He is a lot different than some of our leading scorers here the last few seasons, but defensemen will figure out they will not be able to stop him because he is so big and strong.” Joining Mason on the first line will be juniors Austin Rusness (five goals, six assists) and Connor Collins. “We’ll have a physical first line who will be able to score,” Denardo said. “Overall, this team will be much more grittier, because they will have to work a lot harder to put the goals up like we
are used to doing.” From there, the lines will be up in the air with an assortment of new, fresh players filling the ranks. Junior forward Taylor Magnuson will center one of the two other lines, with junior Kyle Herrmann along as a forward. Senior Nick LeTourneau will center the other line, with forwards such as junior Casey Paskey, sophomores Jacob Fritz, Wilson Lysford and seniors Brennon Benscoter, Brady Wilberg and Sam Velde seeing time as scoring threats. “Early on, we’ll probably be running just two lines, especially in the third period, while having the fourth and fifth lines flip-flopping each game,” Denardo said. “We just have a multitude of guys who will be filtering in and out of the lineup.” Defensively, the Lakers will be anchored by seniors Ethan Brekke and Derick Brehm, along with junior Isaac Fondrick and sophomores Mike Herrmann and Dylan Bremseth. “Ethan Brekke is a very strong and physical defenseman, who is also offensive (nine goals, 22 assists),” Denardo said. “We have a lot of youth also who will see some time on defense.” Much like the rest of the team, the goalie position will be filled by a young player in freshman Mackenzie Steele, who had a strong season last year for the Bantams. Steele is a smallish goalie, who will learn on the job this season, the DL
coach said. “Fundamentally, Mac is sound,” Denardo said. “He takes good angles, too. But he will have to play big and eliminate space in net, since he is a smaller goalie. “One thing he does understand is there is no pressure on him, he has nothing to prove to his team or to me. Development is the biggest key for him this season.” Senior Garret Hill will be Steele’s backup, as well. As is per the usual for every season, Denardo expects to be a contender for the Mid-State Conference title. From there, it will be how the team

develops, since the Lakers have been moved back to the mighty Section 8-1A, where teams such as Warroad, Thief River Falls and East Grand Forks reside. “I’m glad to be back in Section 8-1A, because if you make it out of there, you are a contender in the state,” Denardo said.

Hemsted to lead young DL Dance Team Ramsey takes over as Laker head dance coach BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There will be plenty of youthful bounce in the Detroit Lakes Dance Team’s season, with only seven of 14 varsity dancers returning with experience. But experience is still present, as the Lakers do have a strong leader returning in their lone senior Rikki Hemsted, who will be the driving force behind the 2011-12 season.

“Rikki is vital to our team’s success,” said first-year head coach Britton Ramsey. “She is a skilled dancer with a strong drive to be successful and has taken many of the younger girls under her wing to show them the ropes.” Other dancers returning with section experience include juniors Arika Johnson, Kaylee Jackson and sophomore Grace Lindquist. The youthful look will come from the six rookie eighth graders, who will be looked upon to contribute, as well. “The biggest difference between this year’s team and last is experience,” Ramsey said. “Most of the girls on last year’s team had been to state before and knew what they were after, while this year, half of our team has never competed at sections before. “The intensity of a varsity level sport is all new to them.” But with the ceiling being high, the Lakers will be working on to progress through the season. Already, the fundamentals are being hit on and learned by the younger dancers, Ramsey said. “I’m starting to see the girls make corrections and connect the dots,” the DL coach said. “Some of our young girls are excellent technical dancers

Now is time to shine for Laker swimmers This is the season team has been building for BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
It’s the season in which has been anticipated for the last five years and it’s finally here for the Detroit Lakes boys’ swimming and diving team. The potential of the 2011-12 Lakers is as high as it ever has been and that’s saying something after last year’s finish, which ended with DL’s Jon Melgaard winning the school’s firstever state diving championship. Although those are some big expectations to fill, these Lakers have been working up to this season to have their breakout party. “This is my sixth year as head coach and the last five years we have been working towards this year,” said DL head coach Rian Heimark. “We’ve been working on the numbers going out, as well as the talent and the kids’ desire. “It used to be that we went out to have fun, but that has changed to, ‘Let’s go out and win.’” That shift in attitude is the result of having 33 swimmers and divers out, which breaks last year’s record of 31. But it isn’t just about numbers, it’s about the skill and talent the team brings into the season. The Lakers will have some solid top-heavy talent in two-time state runner-up senior Quillan Oak and senior Brandon Olson, who finished fifth in state in the 500-yard freestyle. Junior Carter Krengel is coming off

Johnson, Andrew Holzgrove, Ricky Borah, Aaron Johnson, Brady Labine, Spencer Heimark, Ryan Wendt. Row 3: Austin Nelson, Austin McCullough, Michael Richter, Travis King, Jacob Kempenich, Danny Arndt, Steven Labine, Tristan E. Johnson. A lot of good things can come of that.”
“It used to be that we went out to have fun, but that has changed to, ‘Let’s go out and win.’” by Rian Heimark, head coach one of his best offseasons, after working with Oak throughout the summer and fall, while seniors Mike Okeson, Travis King and junior Cody Johnson are all back with state experience in relays and a hunger to make this one of DL’s best campaigns as a team. “Everyone knows they have a big job in front them, but they also know they can do it,” Heimark said. The mid-level depth is there, as well, with juniors Christian Tigges, Hunter Scheleske, sophomores Isaac Clem and Austin Nelson all returning with plenty of yards put in the competitive pool last year. One area the Lakers will be thin in was their strength last year — diving. Gone is state champion Melgaard and state qualifier Justin George. The void they leave will be filled by a good number of young, but inexperienced, divers. But with that many swimmers in the
For Oak, he knows he will be competing on the state’s highest level, it just comes down on cashing in on his final year of high school competition. Twice, Oak has finished second in state in the 100-breaststroke, while take third in the individual medley last year. An unfortunate goggle mishap eliminated his hopes in the breaststroke last year, but that has driven up his motivation for his senior season. “Like he said at the pool the other day, he has a chip on his shoulder and he wants to take it off,” Heimark said. “He is stronger than he has ever been and everything is lined up for Quillan this year.” Olson is also coming off a broken foot which was incurred during the fall, but he should be at full strength sometime this season for another run in the 500 freestyle, Heimark mentioned.
Relays also will be a strength and Heimark’s goal is to qualify all three in state. “I can now play around with the relays because we have so many good swimmers and I can be creative with the lineup,” the DL coach said. As for Krengel, both are vying to qualify for state in four events, something which the potential has gone up after working hard in the offseason. “Carter has come a long way and his technique has grown stronger,” Heimark said. The team goals have also increased and the Lakers are aiming on beating Fergus Falls this season, something they have not done since Heimark has coached. “That would be big for the boys,

Nordic skiers growing into successful teams Richards and Ramstad-Skoyles return as state skiers BY BRIAN WIERIMA

Plenty of growth has been had by the Detroit Lakes boys’ and girls’ Nordic ski teams over the years and it will be on full display during the 2010-11 season. The Lakers return two multiple state qualifiers in senior Jake Richards and sophomore Berit Ramstad-Skoyles, while bringing back a slew of experience. “We are an older team with experience and we will be getting some valuable leadership from our seniors,” said DL head coach Dan Josephson. The Laker boys will be led by Richards, along with senior teammates

putting in.” The section has gotten more rugged, with the addition of St. Cloud Tech, St. Cloud Apollo and Sauk Rapids. When the snow does fly and accumulate, the Lakers will start their schedule. They do have a meet scheduled for Saturday in Grand Rapids and Saturday, Dec. 17, in Bemidji. But the skis won’t hit the trails until the snow does. “We need snow, that’s the most important thing now,” Josephson added.

Laker matmen still young, but seasoned DL to experience the new weight classes employed BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There are two factors in which has changed and remained the same for the 2011-12 Detroit Lakes wrestling team. The first, youth, still remains the same. The Lakers return plenty of their young matmen from a year ago. The second, experience, has increased after a season of learning on the ropes in 2010-11. “We are still very young, since we only have three seniors on the roster,” said DL head coach Rob Ullyott. “But we should be very experienced from weights 106 through 160, but be pretty green up top. “Our goals are to just develop and get better.” But the biggest change of all has nothing to do with the Lakers, but instead, the weight classes. After the National Federation of High School Association wrestling committee completed a nationwide study on weight classes, they were changed after being divided evenly in each weight division. They added a weight class in the upper slots, with the old divisions being 160, 170 and 189. Now there will be 160, 170, 182 and 195 pound classes. “That may make it more difficult for smaller schools to fill that extra heavier weight class, since there are fewer kids in those divisions,” Ullyott said. “But they basically just equally laid out the weight classes.” The lower weights have also changed, with the start of matches beginning with the 106-pound class, followed by 113, 120, 126, 132 and 138. The middle classes include 145-pounds, 152, 160 and 170, with the ending being 182, 195, 220 and heavyweight. What hasn’t changed for the Lakers, though, is the fact they will be able to start out strong with senior state entrant from last year Gabe Foltz back at 106 or 113. Another state qualifier returns in freshman Parker Jackson, who will fill the 145 division. “Both Parker and Gabe put in a tremendous amount of work during the

Freshman 126-pounder Nate Francis was a regular on last year’s squad, while being a two-year starter and posting a 26-16 record. Freshman Logan Twigg will also see time at 126, as well. The experienced junior Zach Baker will be DL’s 132-pounder after he finished third in the section last season and had 39 matches. His back-up to start the season will be newcomer junior Mike Crowell. The 138 class will have plenty of competition, with freshmen Boyd Bradbury, Bryant Swiers, sophomore Luke Eggebraaten and junior Justin Reineccius all competing for time. Reineccius brings the most experience with 33 matches in 2010-11. Sophomore Cody Bora will be wrestling at 145, along with Jackson, while five wrestlers will help fill the 152 slot. They include freshman Jordon Nolan,

At 120, some seasoning was had by each of freshman Luke Payne (11
sophomores Brandon Dahring, Cole Hegg, Ben Ortiz and junior Austin Cook. “Brandon Dahring has the most experience there with 30 varsity matches and there will be good depth 152,” Ullyott included. Sophomore Jarett Nosal and senior Travis Kienitz each had 28 matches last season and will fill 160, along with sophomore Alex Webber. The 170 class will be pretty young, with eighth grader Malcum Bradbury, freshman Kyle Achterling, junior
Perham transfer Matt Carlson all contending. Junior Jason Griego will start as DL’s 182-pounder, with senior Ben Gailfus (31 matches) and junior Cameron Fritz each vying for time at 195. Sophomore Kirby Siewert and freshman Evan Mali will each see time at 220, while eighth grader James Huwe and freshman Luke Martens each filling DL’s heavyweight division. “Since we are pretty inexperienced and young in the higher weights, we’ll need to get the job done in the lower weights early on,” Ullyott said. With the Section 8-2A favorites being Thief River Falls and Perham, Ullyott feels the Lakers can be a contender as a top four team. “We are always hoping to be in the hunt in the section,” the DL coach said.

Experience brings higher expectations LP-A boy cagers learned in 2010-11 season BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There will be less of a learning curve for the young Lake Park-Audubon boys’ basketball team, which basically passed Basketball 101 during the 201011 season. The first couple of weeks of practice were easier and less about the basics, but more about learning the Raider’s scheme under head coach Lucas Isaacson. “One of the things I did notice in practice that the guys are knowing what to expect and knowing what’s going on,” Isaacson said. “The experience factor is huge, they are a long ways ahead of where we were last year at this time.” The Raiders of last year had very little varsity experience, so it was a baptism by fire type of season. After taking those bumps in 2010-11, the Raiders will have a bit more seasoning this time around, along with some solid athleticism. Returning will be senior guard Bryce Bartunek, who will be the outright leader, while junior Andrew Erickson will join him in the backcourt. The athletic senior Chase Zeller will anchor the frontcourt, along with a host of guards in seniors Andrew Bailey, Wes Jaster, Zach Tougas, forward Beau Svobodny and junior forward Nate Renner. Sophomore Isaiah Person will also see some time on the floor. One aspect lacking in the LP-A lineup will be height, so Isaacson is hoping the teams’ athleticism and hustle will make up for that. “We’re going to rely on running the court and not slowing down,” the LP-A coach said. “We want to pressure the ball more than we did last year and hopefully create some more easy buckets from our transition game. “Our size is always a concern and

we may struggle with the teams who have the big guys in the middle.” Defense is also an area the Raiders will need to improve on from last season, so Isaacson is installing a more aggressive approach on that end of the floor. “Last year, we were forced to play zone, but we should be more comfortable playing more man-to-man defense,” Isaacson added. The Raiders will see more comparable competition this season after their move to the Pine to Prairie Conference, from the larger school Heart O’Lakes Conference. The Pine to Prairie South half will contain Waubun, Ulen-Hitterdal, Norman County West, Norman County East and Ada-Borup. “We’ll be playing schools more our

Lady Raiders to run-and-gun in 2011-12 BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
First-year Lake Park-Audubon girls’ basketball coach Anthony Bryant knows plenty about hard work and a killer mentality. After all, the new Raiders’ coach is a Captain in the Army National Guard and has served two tours in Iraq and Kosovo. Bryant enters his first coaching job with some good weapons, as well, with a host of talent returning on the 2011-12 Raiders girls’ basketball team. The biggest gun the Raiders will employ will be senior guard Andrea Knudsvig, who as a three-year starter has already accumulated 1,599 career points entering the season. Knudsvig’s determination and work ethic matches Bryant’s background. “Andi has a heart of a champion,” Bryant said. “She is fast and can handle the ball. When she is in the zone, no one can stop her.” With senior point guard Tate Hall taking over the ball-handling duties, Knudsvig will be that more dangerous as a scorer. “With Tate running the point, that really frees up Andi,” Bryant said. The Raiders will also be stout in the frontcourt, with the athletic sophomore Bailee Bartunek coming back with good experience. Bartunek was named AllConference in 2010-11, while being an athletic and long post, rebounding will be a strength with her 11
rebounds per game average last season. “She will be key down low for us,” Bryant said. Hall provides the Raiders with a good perimeter shot, as well. Joining Bartunek down low will be seniors Marley McDunn and Rachel Carlson. “Rachel is a quick player, who is a defensive maniac,” the LP-A coach said. LP-A will also be eight to nine players deep, with sophomores Breann Hogie and Lindsey Olson each providing solid depth off the bench. The slow-pace game the Raiders have played in past years will not be the focus this year. Instead, LP-A will be looking to run, run and run some more. “This year, we are going to play hard man-to-man defense and we are going to try to run the floor on people,” Bryant said. “I’ve brought some training tips on how to get stronger.” Bryant knows what this team is capable of doing, it’s just a matter of the players buying into it and keep working hard throughout the season in every game. “This team is good enough to go out and beat a lot of teams,” Bryant said. “But I want to convince them never to be satisfied. These girls are good and if they can go out and out-work their opponents every night, they can go somewhere.” Bryant’s assistants will by Andy Weber and Lindsey Schultz, as well.

Bigger numbers add depth to UCB BY BRIAN WIERIMA
brianw@dlnewspapers.com
There will be a familiar face in a new place for the United Clay Becker wrestling team this season. For the past five years, Brenton Newling aided Travis Nagel in rebuilding the Lake Park-Audubon wrestling program, which later formed a cooperative with Hawley to form the UCB Badgers. After Nagel accepted a Principal job in the Ogema-Waubun Elementary School District, thus leaving the head coaching job to the next obvious choice
tribute, we should be fine,” Newling said. “I think we have a good opportunity to win an extra five or six duals.” The Badgers do have a good, strong core returning in state qualifier senior Wyatt Wixo, along with past state qualifier Mason Swegarden. Senior Logan Gage is also knocking on the door as a state wrestler, as is junior Matt Pepper. But the depth has improved dramatically, with 15 out in grades seven through nine and an all-time high of eight wrestlers out from Hawley. “If you are going to build up a program, you have to start with the
“I think we have a good opportunity to win an extra five or six duals... If you are going to build up a program, you have to start with the younger kids” by Brenton Newling, head coach — Newling. The new head coach has already raised some expectations after a 2-11 dual record last year, which is keyed by an influx of a higher number of kids out for wrestling. “In the past years, we were having around five to six forfeits, but with a lot of younger kids out and if they can con-
younger kids,” Newling said. Wixo returns as the No. 8 ranked at 145 in Class 2A and will look to continue his success from last year, where he qualified for the state meet. Swegarden suffered a “heartbreaker” in the section meet last year, just missing out on a state berth. He will potentially bump up to 126 pounds from 119,
while Wixo will bounce from 145 to 152. Gage has also been on the path of improvement and he will anchor down at 132, while Pepper will wrestle at 220. “We’ll be pretty strong from 126 to 195,” Newling said. Those youngsters who will be looked upon to contribute will start at 106 with eighth grader Jarrett Lange kicking things off. “He’s tough and has shown a lot of improvement,” Newling added. “(At 113) Nick Wamre had a strong offseason and looks improved.” Eighth grader Jonah Lange has put in his time during the offseason and will wrestle at 145, while junior Alex Lindsay has the inside track at 170.

The Badgers will once again compete in Section 8-2A, where the favorites will be Perham and Thief River Falls, with Detroit Lakes and Fergus Falls also being possible contenders. But the Badgers will continue to build on what has been worked on the last several years, now with Newling heading the way.
