NOTE FROM THE PUBLISHER
We Win From Within These past few months have been exceptionally challenging as we have distanced ourselves from people we love for health and safety concerns. A special duty that left us with time to work on ourselves and reflect inwardly on the things that truly matter to us. For some, it was an opportunity to learn a new skill, finish a life long goal, reconnect in conversations with distant family, and find inner peace with a new daily routine. Most of us have heard the saying, “We truly win when we win from within.” If you haven’t enjoyed this concept yet, I’m excited to share it with you today. I personally took the opportunity to reach new goals and encourage other entrepreneurs in their journeys. This summer granted me exciting mentions on Yahoo! Finance and four different mentions on various Forbes articles, including one about my incredible journey as a publisher. I also learned how to play tennis and dedicated every morning to reach fitness goals. This year, at 33, I am in the best mental and physical shape I have ever been. I’ll treasure this season. I have had the opportunity to reset and re-evaluate life as I embraced winning from within. If I can have a breakthrough this season, I know you can too. It’s my honor to share this stunning issue dedicated to incredible people pushing forward with everything they’ve got. In these pages, we celebrate emerging artists like our cover girl, Brittney Palmer. We share the stories of entrepreneurs, doctors, a beautiful story of motherhood, and several game-changers. Our writers reveal great American places to travel and stunning interior design that will inspire you.

FEATURE STORY
DR. NEVILLE CAMPBELL Leading The Industry In Pain Care – By Ashlee DeMartino Dr. Neville Campbell grew up in Port Antonio, Jamaica. His family didn’t have much, but what they did have was love. “My mom and dad really did their best with the little that they had. They taught us to be appreciative, industrious, and committed,” said Dr. Campbell. His days started at 4:00 AM, working on the family farm and then off to school. After school finished, it was back home for more work at the farm. The discipline learned in his childhood is what lead to Dr. Campbell getting a degree in both medicine and business. At age eleven, he knew he wanted to be a doctor, but his path to getting there took a detour. “I got distracted when I migrated to the states at age eighteen and decided that I would pursue computer science. After taking a detour for more than eight years, my mother’s gentle reminder of my initial love for medicine was too loud to ignore. I decided to abandon my then good paying job and go back to school full time to pursue my dream of becoming a doctor,” he said. Dr. Campbell went to Medical School at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City. He did a residency in Anesthesiology at SUNY Downstate and Pain Management Fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital. After his residency, he decided to spend his life caring for people who had chronic pain. His choice again influenced by his most significant role model, his
mom. “Watching her suffer in Jamaica with chronic back pain broke my heart, and I vowed that I would help not only people here in the United States but also those in less fortunate countries.” This decision has lead him to become the founder and CEO of the Center for Wellness and Pain Care in Las Vegas. “We are known for practicing cutting edge pain medicine, helping people get their lives back, and giving patients hope to live again. We treat every patient like an individual, delivering the same care that we would provide a family member. We specialize in minimally invasive surgical treatment for spinal pain where patients experience very little downtime and short recovery periods,” he said.
When he is not at work, Dr. Campbell enjoys spending time relaxing with his wife, his three daughters, and finding the opportunity to volunteer. He is on the board of directors for Healing Hands Abroad Organization. This non-profit provides voluntary medical and surgical services to individuals in third world countries. “I lead the pain management brigade once per year on our trip. I recruit anesthesiologists, internal medicine doctors, physical therapists, chiropractors, students, and nurses to create a team,” he said. Dr. Campbell hopes to become a more prominent player in the pain management space in Las Vegas with a regional presence in adjacent states. Dr. Campbell says, “I also hope to expand my international voluntary presence and continue to lead others to make an impact locally, nationally, and internationally.” Why does he do all of this? Dr. Campbell states, “Helping others is what I was born to do. My life is one of servitude. I am complete, satisfied, and fulfilled when I serve others and extend help to others. This way of life has been inherited from my mom, and it has served me well.”

THE HEART OF LAW:
Patrick Kang Patrick Kang has had the honor of serving his community to protect personal injury and employment discrimination/compensation victims. Kang recalls the defining moment in his life that inspired him to pursue his path. “When I was young, my dad got into a work-related accident. I remember his struggle, and I remember him hurt for months. He was a factory worker with GM, and somehow an engine fell on him. He used the seed money from his settlement to start his own business. Not only was my dad given justice, but he was also given the opportunity to change his life.” Fueled by witnessing how deeply his family was impacted, Kang later decided to declare a sociology major and attend law school thereafter. With his law office now located in the heart of Chinatown and being of Korean descent himself, Kang can “cater to the Korean and Asian community.” He explains, “I understand the culture and language, so when someone comes here from Korea, I understand the issues they face. They may be cautious about who they do business with or more hesitant to reach out to human resources,” due to the language barrier.
Of all his clients, Kang says, “I always tell my clients how it is, the brutal truth, whether it’s good or bad.” He explains, “Some employees feel like they can do nothing, and the employer has done nothing to protect them. It is so important to hold employers accountable for every single one of their actions.”
“Every case is one step closer to real change.” – Patrick Kang Kang shares his greatest tips for success, “Pay attention not to the money aspect of the business, but to the service you’re providing.” He implements his own advice by not “worrying about what I’m charging, what it’s going to cost, and how much money I’m going to make. Instead, I look at my client as a person and focus on how to help them best.” He assures, “The rest follows naturally. The money and success just come back to you.” www.acelawgroup.com

SANDRA BLEDSOE ON THE BUSINESS OF ANTI-AGING & WELLNESS – By Danica Stockton Primarily servicing the Las Vegas and Reno regions of Nevada, Sandra Bledsoe develops businesses centered around anti-aging and medical wellness. Her company, Revenge MD trains and hires medical professionals specializing in weight loss, hormone balance solutions, botox, and PDO thread lifts. She hopes to inspire women and men alike to “transform and improve their confidence” with her help and trained professionals’ help. When asked about the history of her involvement in the industry, she explains, “for the past ten years, aesthetic balancing has been the roots and over the last five years, aesthetic contouring through botox fillers. Now we are the leading experts for PDO threading.”
“When you look better, you feel better. When you feel better, you treat others better.” –Sandra Bledsoe Many patients request bioidentical hormone replacement, which Bledsoe says, “is specifically geared to precision. It’s more than throwing testosterone, progesterone, and estrogen in the system, but rather, done specifically by blood work determining levels you’re low in.” She continues, “this gives the body what it needs in exact dosages to make you feel energetic and sexual,” while also improving “brain function and skin elasticity.” She mentions how this solution “specializes in not only looking good on the outside but feeling good on the inside. This approach is a way to keep the body working at optimum efficiency and appearance.” Bledsoe finds her work rewarding. She says, “it’s extremely gratifying seeing patients transform, improve their confidence, and relay better with others as a result of enhancing the way they look and feel.” She continues, “My goal is to give a patient the best customer service, results-oriented, so when they walk out of the office, they feel better and treat people better.” She values “building business around qualities that help people feel better and improve their lives. It gives me the greatest job satisfaction and establishes purpose.” Sandra Bledsoe intends to expand Revenge MD to several west coast cities such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento. PUBLISHER’S CHOICE: BEST LASER SPA IN 2020
L.A. LASER —By Ashlee DeMartino
Voted best laser spa in Vegas for 2020, L.A. Laser is a place where clients feel like family. The salon is a boutique-style spa with the latest laser technology. Beauty, comfort, and affordability provide custom treatments for all skin types. For owner Amber Reyes, being able to help clients feel beautiful, confident, and cared for brings Amber a sense of fulfillment. She says, “I entered this business with the idea that helping people feel better about themselves, and helping them feel their most beautiful was my priority.”
What does beauty mean to her? She answered that question by stating, “Beauty means feeling like a better person than yesterday. Whether external or internal, we all radiate beauty when we feel more confident, more true to ourselves than we did the day before.” Besides expanding to two locations in Hawaii, what sets L.A. Laser apart from other hair removal facilities in Vegas? Amber says, “We aren’t a chain, and we treat everyone like they are family. Each client chooses a tech they like, and we know clients on a first-name basis. We love to deliver a warm and personal experience,” she said, helping them to stay a step above the rest. “We will always feel like a personalized experience. We love to offer fun deals, paired with an exceptional client experience. You can go to one of the big-box hair removal chains, but they won’t tailor the experience to your needs quite like L.A. Laser will,” she said. The future looks bright for L.A. Laser as more locations are in the works, and they are always expanding their menu of services. They are also planning more events like their coveted “Fancy Fridays” in the near future.

BRITTNEY PALMER Written By Dayna Roselli Cover & Editorial Photo By Timothy Hancock Styled By Forplay Stylehouse
Interview BRITTNEY PALMER
Brittney Palmer is more than just a pretty face; she is a thirty-three-yearold contemporary artist, a philanthropist, UFC octagon girl, Playboy cover girl, traveler, dancer, and model. Brittney knows how to hustle, and each job she takes on helps her achieve her dreams. Growing up in Las Vegas, Palmer has been a UFC ring girl since the age of nineteen. She was a professional dancer in Las Vegas shows and a cocktail waitress at Hard Rock Hotel’s REHAB pool party and PURE Nightclub at Caesars Palace. She worked hard for the money. That money paid her way through art school; in fact, she paid for it upfront in cold hard cash. All the work was worth it. At the age of twenty-one, life changed for Brittney after being injured in a car accident. Palmer was out of commission for about three months; she couldn’t walk or dance, but she discovered something she could do that she had never shown interest in before, she could paint. Brittney used the time she had at home to put the emotions she was experiencing on canvas. She had discovered her calling. When she recovered from the accident, Brittney realized she didn’t want to go back to the same things she was doing before; she wanted to paint! She moved to Los Angeles and began studying art at the University of California, Los Angeles. She has stayed with the UFC and now uses the social media following she has built to showcase her creations. Palmer says, “my first commissioned painting was an Amy Winehouse painting, and it sold for maybe a thousand bucks, so three months after I moved to L.A., I started selling my work.” Since then, various exhibits have featured her art at institutions and galleries in Los Angeles, Miami, New York, Hong Kong, and Milan. Palmer recently did two Pop-Up Gallery shows called Electric Flow at Park MGM in Las Vegas. It was at this Gallery Brittney was able to show Lady Gaga a painting that she had completed of the star. It was an incredible moment for Palmer to witness her reaction, and Gaga committed to buying the painting for her foundation. Palmer also has her art pieces displayed in the lobby of the W Hotel in Hollywood. With many people still not wanting to venture out, Brittney’s next show in L.A. will be virtual so that everyone can see it. Palmer says she is always thinking ahead, “At my last show I was thinking about my next show, I never settle at one thing.” Palmer uses a lot of vibrant colors in her artwork and describes her art as spontaneous realism. She has big plans, “I want to keep exhibiting and working with museums, doing lectures, and getting more into the world of art; it is such a powerful, big, broad-spectrum. I want to do huge collaborations with big brands and take my art global.” The artist also supports a lot of charities, which she loves. She works with amfAR and UNICEF as a donating artist. She is a prominent supporter of Steven Tyler’s Janie’s Fund and Lady Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation. Palmer is also working with a public benefit fashion company called One Golden Thread that prints her art on scarves that can be used as face coverings, which everyone is using right now

What makes you the best version of yourself? Just being who I am, with no apologies and no explanation necessary. So many people want to be someone else or always compare themselves to other people. I think it is important that we are all individuals because we are all beautiful, we are all perfect in the way that we are. So to stay true to that and not worry if I can be on the cover of Playboy or be an artist, or if those two can’t go together. Why not? Why? Make your own rules. I was talking about art while I was in Playboy. Never apologize for anything, and trust who you are. What do you love about working with the UFC? I love the sport. I genuinely love the UFC; I think it’s so fascinating and exciting. It is an amazing show, I love the production value, and I love the people I work with. My best friend is Arianny Celeste, she is like my sister, and we travel the world together. We do the same job, wear the same clothes, and do each other’s make up. I love that I get to travel, meet people, and see the world. I feel like a lot of people would benefit from seeing more of the world because you can understand how much more there is out there, and that has helped me at such a young age to grow up. What’s your workout and health routine? “I don’t eat meat. I’ll eat fish if it’s good fish, but very limited. I used to take every kind of workout class before the quarantine, but now I have just been doing home workouts, two-mile runs every day, and yoga. I always have to switch it up and sweat in some way every day.” Palmer says she’s also fallen in love with home workouts during the quarantine. She may stick with it and not go back to classes or a gym. She loves not having to be at a class at a particular time, enjoying the freedom to do it when it fits her schedule. If you had to indulge in a meal, what would it be? It would be Truffle pasta from Crossroads. When it comes to luxury, what are your favorite things? “I am my father’s daughter, so I love luxury cars.” Palmer also likes watches and has a vintage Rolex, 1979. She spends most of her money on travel, saying, “I’d rather buy a first-class ticket to Bali than a bag; I like the experiences, and that kind of luxury.” What’s your style? Day-to-day Palmer is boho, casual, artsy, and fun, but she also enjoys dressing up. One of her favorite looks was a skirt she wore to a gala in Hong Kong, “I wore a Jean-Michel Basquiat huge skirt, he’s one of my favorite artists, so it was like a graffiti skirt that I wore at the amfAR.” INSTAGRAM: @brittneypalmer @brittneypalmerart WEBSITE: brittneypalmer.com

ENTREPRENEUR SPOTLIGHT:
Shyon Keoppel – By Danica Stockton
Shyon Keoppel began his career in entrepreneurship and investments in his hometown in Oklahoma. A deficit in subprime lending to borrowers with less than ideal credit inspired him to step in on projects with potential but little to no funding. At 19 years old, he founded his first company and has not slowed down since. He relocated to LA in order to expand his reach and develop larger brands in the hospitality field. Initially the relocation was high risk. Keoppel had to fulfill the relocation costs, while turning down smaller opportunities in Oklahoma to prioritize larger opportunities in Los Angeles. The pay off was certainly worth it. He now operates both of his investment companies, SK Venture Group and Millennial Capital Group, seamlessly with a supportive team to back his needs and the needs of his partners. Keoppel saw the potential for accelerated growth by seizing higher-level opportunities in a larger city, and we are certainly glad he took the leap. Keoppel stays in communication with his office staff, partners, and potential partners to keep project development on track. The ongoing journey of discovering new ideas and pairing them with the real estate and funding needed to bring them to fruition is one of Keoppel’s greatest rewards. He emphasizes the importance of keeping his team happy and explains, “One sour employee or dissatisfied partner could bring everything down.” Therefore, it is essential “to keep everyone happy and good energy rolling” throughout the entire process. Ultimately, he says of his partners and staff, “If they’re happy, I’m happy.”
40 | Deluxe Version Magazine
When asked for his greatest tips for success, Keoppel shares, “to concentrate on one thing, work hard on one venture, and finish it.” He cautions not to start multiple projects with partial commitment, but instead to “be passionate about the idea you have and execute it to the finish line.” Once that happens, that is the right time to take the proceeds from a finished project to reinvest in a new one and start the process again. With the home office still being located in Oklahoma, and his physical presence reaching larger cities, Shyon Keoppel has created a national powerhouse in the investment field and hospitality industry. Many of the dining and entertainment brands that we love and enjoy would not have been possible without SK Venture and Millennial Capital Groups involvement To learn more about Shyon and his company, please visit skventuregroup.com

The Stirling Club: LUXURY AT ITS BEST – By Dayna Roselli Las Vegas has its fair share of country clubs, but when you don’t play golf, it doesn’t really serve a purpose. The Stirling Club is an upscale private club that may be a better fit for your lifestyle, and so far this year, the club has sold more memberships than its other clubs across the United States. The Stirling Club is located at Turnberry Place, near the Las Vegas strip. Keep in mind, you don’t have to be a Turnberry resident to be a member. It’s for everyone. Truly upscale-luxury at its best.
Kathleen Gustafson is the Vice President of membership sales, she says, “people are so thankful to get their lifestyle back, they are thrilled to be able to have lunch at the club and bring their clients in, they enjoy our pool cabanas and tennis courts, it’s nice to be around like-minded individuals, they love it.” The club closed back in 2012 and was purchased by DK Hospitality in 2018. It’s undergone a complete remodel and opened its doors in October of 2019. Since then, the club continues to upgrade and add amenities. The “Michael Boychuck Salon at Stirling Club” is opening soon. Boychuck has been doing hair in Las Vegas for more than 20 years. His client list includes dozens of celebrities and fabulous people! It will be a full-service salon. During these uncertain times, Gustafson also points out that people feel safe and secure in the club. She says many of the members like the fact that it’s a private club and they see faces they know and trust. The club takes a lot of regular precautions. Gustafson says, “they do temperature checks upon entry, there’s a cleaning staff around the clock, gym equipment is
wiped down after each use… it’s spotless.” The decor inside the club is a mix of modern luxury and old school luxury. Members also enjoy incredible food by Chef Dan Rossi. They often request specific dishes and Chef is always up for it. Rossi is known for his fresh pasta and everything is made from scratch. Friday nights at the club include socially distanced pool parties with a DJ until midnight. The pool was remodeled and includes cabanas and poolside service. You can grab a drink or food. There’s also an indoor pool, they use salt water so it’s easier on the hair and skin. Gustafson also says The Stirling Club is proud to have four Har-Tru clay tennis courts, “it’s easier on the body… we even have professional players like Steffi Graf come by to play on the courts.” The club also has added new Pickle Ball courts. There are membership plans for everyone. You don’t even have to live in Las Vegas to join. The Stirling Club also offers an Elite Membership that comes with Signature Gold by ClubCorp. This allows you to get two dinners and two rounds of golf each month at clubs around the country. Initiation fees are being waived for a few more weeks. Gustafson says you can contact her directly to talk about memberships and get a tour, “the remodel is done so nice, it’s a gem, you can’t believe how beautiful it is!” Website: thestirlingclub.com | Kathleen Gustafson: 702-274-5672

CARMEL, CALIFORNIA C A R M E L VA L L E Y R A N CH
Carmel Valley Ranch is unlike any other resort you've been to. Sure, it's a perfect place to let your shoulders rest, sit by the pool and enjoy the good life. But more importantly, this is the place where you'll sneak away to tap into that elixir of life-play. All kinds of play, for all kinds of people. Programs and experiences designed specifically to help you rekindle romances and reconnect with friends and family, and of course, revive spirits. Where else can you play 18 holes of world-class golf, access hundreds of miles of hiking trails, wander around an organic garden, learn about honey bees in an apiary, explore vineyard terroir, enjoy mountain-top yoga, go

horseback riding, enjoy some archery and then relax by your choice of pools-all within walking distance of your suite? Carmel Valley extends from the coastal village of Carmel-by-the-Sea into the heart of the Santa Lucia Mountains. Because of the location, the climate tends to be a lot warmer, sunnier and less foggy than the coast. This is the same reason the area is such a premier wine growing region - in fact, Monterey County has one of the largest collections of premium vines around. And at just an hour from Silicon Valley and a short drive from everything the Central Coast has to offer, Carmel Valley is the perfect base camp for any getaway.

A UFC RING GIRL’S BABY STEPS TOWARD MOTHERHOOD
POSING FOR TWO:
ARIANNY CELESTE – By Stacey Gualandi
When it comes to striking her signature pose, spokesmodel Arianny Celeste isn’t going to let a little pregnancy get in the way. “I still like my bikini, so I’m not going to hide the bump. I’m proud of the bump,” Celeste says. “I always joke: I’m going to be in my bikini until I’m 95.” The popular UFC “ring girl” is making a shift from girlhood to motherhood, now that she is 8 months pregnant with her first child. In late June, she and her boyfriend of a year, model/actor Taylor King, announced to her faithful followers (3 million and counting!) that their baby boy will arrive in September. “We actually had a 3-D scan of the baby and he looked just like Taylor…literally a little mini-me,” Arianny jokes. The 34-year-old Mexican model-turned-mom says she’s always wanted to have children, but admits her maternal instincts didn’t quite kick in immediately.
“I don’t want to say I’m a control freak, but I like to control aspects of my life; I like to know what’s happening. I don’t like change too much, so this was very scary at the beginning.” Now as she prepares for her due date, Arianny is researching everything on pregnancy; relocating to her hometown of Las Vegas (to be closer to her son’s elated grandmother!); and relaunching her business Girlfriend Box, personalized jewelry gift boxes sent automatically to your girlfriend on all the big days. I caught up with Deluxe Version Magazine’s favorite ring girl to talk about her growing pains, her pregnancy role model, and how she stays positive in a pandemic.

ARIANNY CELESTE
Motherhood
ARIANNY CELESTE
Q&A DELUXE VERSION MAGAZINE: A big congratulations to you and Taylor! Were you secretly hoping for a boy? ARIANNY CELESTE: I’ve always wanted a brother to defend me and take care of me. I’m girly—I love fashion and makeup and everything— so I hope that I have a girl one day too. I want to have two kids, but I’m just so happy that the first is a boy. DVM: Have you had any issues during your pregnancy, like morning sickness? ARIANNY: I have back pains, hip pain and leg pain, but it’s just from the extra weight. Other than that, just knowing that my little baby is in my belly is the coolest and most beautiful feeling in the world. DVM: Why did you post that beautiful ‘letter to your baby’ on Instagram? ARIANNY: I think through these hard times, it’s important to remember that there’s still beauty in the world, and that the love that we are about to share is part of that beauty; also, just to always be positive and remember [to] love through all this chaos, because there’s so much chaos going on right now. It’s really scary stuff that’s happening, so I just want to protect him as much as possible. DVM: How are you coping with stress right now? ARIANNY: The more positive thinking and meditation and everything else that you can do to kind of calm your mind during these hard times is really important, and I learned a lot about that during this time. I started a meditation challenge because I was always curious about meditation. I would do it here and there, but this challenge really forced me to have to do it every morning and I saw how it affected me in a positive light. I’m doing it while I’m pregnant and it’s a great tool, especially now. DVM: Were you concerned that pregnancy would affect your career? ARIANNY: It definitely was something that shocked me and made me super nervous because my job has always been to be in the spotlight and to be fit and seen as the sexy thing, so all of those thoughts went through my head like, ‘Oh my God!’ But again, it was about that control and it was about letting go and not always having to plan every single little thing perfectly. DVM: Your body is your calling card. Are you worried about it changing? ARIANNY: It’s definitely nerve-wracking, because you’re like, ‘Oh, is my body going to go back to the way it was?’ and blah, blah, blah. I’m just really trying to stay positive and as active as possible, with prenatal yoga and 30 minutes of live workouts that I love, which include a lot of dancing and band work. I’m always go-go-go and doing super high-intensity workouts, but everything changes when you have a baby so you have to listen to your body. I’m just trying to be as gentle as possible with myself, not look at the scale every day, and not obsess because that can really psych you out. DVM: Do you have a pregnant role model? ARIANNY: Brooke Burke has always been my mommy idol. She’s graceful, beautiful, sexy, she’s done Playboy, she’s hosted television shows. She’s very into fitness and has four kids and she still looks amazing. DVM: You’ve had to step back from your UFC duties, but do you plan to return to the ring, post-baby?
DVM: How has this impacted your life with Taylor? ARIANNY: We’ve taken the time to enjoy being with each other and we’ve grown. He is starting two different businesses. I’ve been busy to say the least, but I’ve also had the time to slow down and enjoy my pregnancy. I think that if the world were normal, I would probably have some FOMO and not be resting as much as I should be. So it’s been a blessing in disguise to be honest. DVM: You relaunched and rebranded Girlfriend Box in July. What is different? ARIANNY: The box has gone from a fashion box with makeup and beauty products to a jewelry box. After being in business for 2 years, I know girls love jewelry and it’s really, really, really rare for them to ever want to send jewelry back. The jewelry box is now more personalized and you can choose to have it delivered one month, every month or five times a year, which means you can schedule it around special occasions and holidays. DVM: What’s on Taylor’s pre-daddy plate? ARIANNY: Taylor is really focused on is his passion project, a nonprofit called Unity Love Equality. With everything that’s going on in the world, he decided to start this to help address children’s education and child sex trafficking, which is a big thing that’s going on right now. We’re both passionate about it and we just want to help the kids as much as possible. There’s no division when it comes to unity, love, and equality. There’s no color when it comes to that. That’s really what we want to teach our baby. DVM: So, how prepared are you for your September due date? ARIANNY: I’m just taking this motherhood thing and running with it. I’m super excited to meet my baby and to be able to connect with women. It’s just so nice to be a part of this new club and everyone, for the most part, has been so sweet and supportive and they’ve helped me. I hope that when I do move to Vegas, I can connect with more moms and do outings and stuff. I really want moms to feel special, to feel important, and to feel sexy. My mom gave so much of herself that she kind of forgot to take care of herself. I want to inspire moms to just take care of themselves and be a role model for their kids. DVM: How important is it to you to be so candid with your millions of followers? ARIANNY: I really wanted to do something that was more personal. I’ve had this perfect image for so long and not everything is perfect in my life. I know that just being pregnant is a lot of work, so hopefully if I can inspire at least one woman who is going through the same thing, that makes me feel good. DVM: 2020 has been a challenging year. What advice would you give to people who are struggling? ARIANNY: I would say don’t compare yourself to any other people or how they are feeling. If you are in a dark place, just know that that’s okay and it’s normal and that it will pass. We’ve all been there. We’ve all had those dark times. This is not an easy thing we’re going through. So just be easy on yourself, be gentle with yourself and go outside, take a walk at a park, take your dogs out, get some sunshine. All of that is free and helps so much with your mental state. DVM: Do you have a name already picked out for your son?
ARIANNY: I definitely want to do some events once I feel good and I’m ready, especially the biggest events. That is my family, and UFC helped me become who I am. I don’t think that I’m going to like traveling every weekend like I was, but I definitely want to come back.
ARIANNY: Yes, it starts with an ‘R.’ But we are waiting to reveal his name when he arrives!
DVM: Did you and Taylor have to change your plans this year?
ARIANNY: That is a definite plan in the future, but right now, we are focusing on our baby and this new chapter.
ARIANNY: Our plan was basically to travel the world, exploring and doing good in the world. We wanted to start this organization called ‘Conscious Travel.’ We had funds to do that and had a bunch of trips planned, and then we found out we were pregnant in January. So like, okay, change of plan, I might have to slow down a little bit, but we can still do this.
DVM: So is this ring girl going to ‘get a ring on it’ anytime soon?
DVM: And one last question: What if your son wants to fight in the UFC? ARIANNY: I would be so nervous but, of course, I’m going to support him in whatever he wants to do. I feel like I have no choice! Ha!

OPULENT WATER’S EDGE CUSTOM HOME SELLS FOR $6.5 MILLION – By Whitney Ogden Lake Las Vegas and its developer, Raintree Investment Corporation, have sold and closed 23 Summer House, the inaugural custom home built in the newly developed Estates at Reflection Bay. “Water’s Edge” sold for $6.5 million, making it the highest priced sale in Lake Las Vegas since 2007. The 8,597 square foot home has received multiple architecture and design awards, including a Gold Nugget in the prestigious 2020 Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC) and a Silver Nugget Award for design and architecture by the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association. “Our vision was to bring contemporary architecture to Lake Las Vegas and to have this home truly be connected to the lake,” said Patrick Parker, president of Raintree Investment Corp., developer of Lake Las Vegas. The home’s architecture team was led by Michael Wetzel and Vern Swaback. “Vern Swaback is the last living apprentice to Frank Lloyd Wright, and his style is evident in the open floor plan, multiple overhangs and highlights of nature throughout the estate,” said Parker. “From the moment you walked into the home, there was an immediate connection with the lake,” said Gene Northup, real estate professional
at Sotheby’s International Realty and the listing agent on the home. “It had approximately 270 degrees of grand vistas overlooking the lake and surrounding mountain ranges, blurring the lines between indoor and outdoor space.” “Indoor-outdoor living is one of the most sought-after designs right now, especially for an area like Lake Las Vegas that has some of the most incredible views with outdoor activity in the city,” Northup said. The home highlighted trends in modern design including neutral and bright colors, clean lines, natural sunlight and spa-like features in the master suite and bath. “In our custom homes, we’re seeing that for many residents, particularly women, creating a relaxing and resort-style feeling in the master bedroom and bath is the most important aspect of the home,” said Northup. Lake Las Vegas currently offers half-acre and 1 acre lots on the water, which both enjoy private parks and beaches at The Estates. Modern Elegance LUXURY DESIGNER: DONNA JOHNSON
“I think what sets us apart is that we start from the very beginning of building all the way through the final accessory,” says Johnson. “We do our own interior architectural drawings and buy direct from the furniture companies.” Sophisticated interior design is an essential part of what makes the homes, hotels, and businesses of Las Vegas and Southern California look opulent and desirable. Donna Johnson, the president, owner and interior designer behind Luxury-Designer, is a big player in the contemporary design scene and has been for the past 37 years. While there are countless interior designers in the luxury game, Johnson and her team stand out from the crowd by being involved in all stages of design. Artisanal Bladesmith & Jeweler:
RAYMOND ROBERTS Raymond Roberts has been developing and executing his craft as a bladesmith and jeweler for the last three years. Hailing from Norman, Oklahoma, he takes pride in providing artisanal pieces to the local area as well as fulfilling orders for customers nationwide. Initially, his craft was centered around custom made knives. Raymond expanded into jewelry by crafting rings and pendant necklaces. Raymond’s creative process has allowed him to stay true to his artistic roots while delivering high-quality products tailored to his customers’ specific desires. A full understanding of customer preferences and intended use of the piece Raymond crafts is an essential component to his ability to satisfy his customers time and time again. He provides knives for the restaurant industry’s professional chefs. Other customers use the knives for cooking at home, as art to display, or as gifts for friends and family. In addition to knives, Raymond creates unique engagement and wedding rings, necklaces, and earrings. The next step in his process is to sketch several designs to review with his customer. Once a design is selected, Raymond either sources his materials, whether they are handcrafted by him or sourced from other craftsmen. Materials include wood, gemstones, steel, and titanium. Damascus, which is created by welding together slices of steel and titanium, is a common theme of his works. Damascus yields patterns reminiscent of marble, water ripples, or wood rings by alternating light and dark metal elements. To complete his process, Raymond forges metals, heat treats materials, grinds, shapes, and polishes his pieces to perfection. He then packages the knives in handcrafted leather sheaths or wooden sayas to protect the blades. Jewelry patrons can expect their items to arrive carefully packaged in jewelry boxes with a handwritten appreciation note from the artist himself detailing materials used and optimal care instructions for their piece. Raymond is happy to impact his community with high-quality knives and jewelry. As he puts it, “Every time my customers look at their wedding rings, it is a lasting impactful symbol of their union.” And of his knife customers, Raymond loves that with every meal his knives prepare, he had a part in creating a lasting memory. Raymond says his path to success is widely due to bringing a “human element to the business, while human connection and interaction is a huge part.” When asked for his greatest tips on success, Raymond advises to, “push yourself beyond your limits and artistic abilities” and to “stay true to yourself.” – By Danica Stockton To see Raymond’s creations and learn more about him and his artwork, you can visit his Instagram @royalty_rings_co.

ARTFULLY ENHANCE YOUR
Bust
Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgical procedures in the United States. Dissatisfaction with the size and shape of the breasts can cause many women to suffer from lowered self-esteem and negative self-image, but Dr. Engineer has the experience and finesse to help you attain the natural-looking, larger breasts you desire with a breast augmentation in Las Vegas. Dr. Engineer employs the use of implants to achieve the breast size and shape you desire. There are several different implant types from which to choose:
SILICONE IMPLANTS
Silicone implants have a durable silicone outer shell pre-filled with silicone gel made to mimic the feel of natural breast tissue. Silicone implants are safe and available in different sizes and have either smooth or textured shells. The circular shape of silicone implants allows the breast augmentation to increase the size and protrusion of the breasts. Some patients feel that the look and feel of silicone implants create a more natural result. Silicone gel-filled breast implants are approved for breast augmentation in women age 22 or older and for breast reconstruction in women of any age. They are also used in revision breast operations, which correct or improve the result of an original procedure.
SALINE IMPLANTS
Saline-filled breast implants are made of an outer silicone shell, which are then filled with a sterile saltwater (saline) solution. Some are pre-filled and others are filled during the implant operation to the size agreed upon by the plastic surgeon and the patient. Saline implants usually have a circular shape to improve protrusion of the bust. Because the silicone implant shell is implanted and placed prior to filling, they may require less invasive surgical incisions. Saline-filled implants come in different sizes and have either smooth or textured shells. The FDA approved saline-filled breast implants for breast augmentation in women age 18 or older and for breast reconstruction in women of any age. In the unlikely event of a rupture, the saline should not cause any health issues, but the implant will need to be replaced as it will deflate.

RESORTCIERGE
GENTILLE CHHUN
Q&A WITH FOUNDER TYRA BELL-HOLLAND
ON MARRYING MILLIONS TV SHOW & G.R.I.T.
–By Sarah Jenkins
–By Sarah Jenkins
TELL US ABOUT RESORTCIERGE RESORTCIERGE is a true Covid silver lining company created by me and Jerome Jeannest as a result of the impact it had on hospitality in Las Vegas but specifically on the Concierge community in Las Vegas, in which I owe my entire career. WHAT EXACTLY IS RESORTCIERGE To explain the what, I have to start with the why. As a past career concierge, President pro tem of SNHCA, and a Les Clefs d’Or, I have dedicated myself to preserving the traditional role of a concierge who is employed by a resort versus industries who have “adopted” the word to achieve a level of prestige or assumption of ultimate guest service. Over the years, a few resorts thought outsourcing this role was an option and it has never been successful as the pedigree, relationships, training, and most of all the heart, was not part of the offering.
After I retired from the profession, I created a medical marketing agency which catered exclusively to the concierge to offer the only 24/7 world-class medical service dedicated to their guests called RESORTCIERGE MD.
Gentille Chhun is one busy woman. The Las Vegas resident of nearly twenty years wears many professional hats. Chances are you’ve caught her stealing the show on Lifetime’s hit, “Marrying Millions”, currently filming Season 2. I met Gentille a recent afternoon to discuss the show’s success, as well as her other entrepreneurial endeavors. Those include Real Estate Investing; a gelato catering business (Mon Amour Gelato), and running an online boutique (Nomi Boutique Online.) Gentille says her ex-boyfriend Brian first submitted an application for them to appear on the show “Marrying Millions”. Viewers witnessed the then-couples’ ups and downs before they ultimately decided to part ways after Season 1.
“With the cameras in front of you all the time… a lot of people become a very embellished, or bigger version of [themselves], basically,” she says. “You’re kind of forced to react, [whereas] in real life, you know, you may not have that much drama.” What’s on the horizon for future dates? Gentille is currently single, she says, but those who don’t fit the bill need not apply. She’s got a set list of qualifications she’d like in an ideal partner, and isn’t apologetic about being picky.
Later on, a past VP at Sands, Paul Pusateri, contacted me to consult with Ava Rose Agency to launch a Concierge department in the Bahamas at Baha Mar. It brought a renewed sense of what I have always felt, once a concierge, always a concierge. Since then, I have consulted for resorts to curate building the best teams in terms of talent, training and methods. It’s WHO I am, not just what I do.
“My friends were saying, ‘you’re not even trying!’” she laughs. She says they even set up online dating profiles for her, but they didn’t yield the potential dates she was looking for. It was then she took things into her own hands.
Because of these uncertain times, a few resorts have once again considered outsourcing to companies camouflaging as offering concierge tech solutions and talent so I was compelled to step in and fight the battle against outsourcing. RESORTCIERGE will become the only true service provider with past Les Clefs d’Or experienced Senior Executives to fill the need. I am proud of the company Jerome Jeannest and I have created together, to temporarily fill this niche in hopes of each and every concierge returning to their perspective roles and by us creating opportunities amongst the most talented concierge pool in the world. Viva Concierge!
“Marrying Millions” airs Wednesdays on Lifetime at 10 PM (PST)

“I said look…. I am looking, and this is my criteria, so I think that it’s just better to put it out there.” She says she’s open to dating overseas, as she has always been attracted to European men. “At the end of the day, regardless of the list, it’s the connection,” she says. “The attraction, and connection.”
NICK POMPONIO GOING THE EXTRA MILE
“I played hockey my whole life. It’s molded me into the person I am today,” said Nick Pomponio, owner and head attorney of Pomponio Injury Law. Nick Pomponio grew up in Michigan, where he was born a hockey player. The lessons he learned on the ice: hard work, determination, and teamwork have followed him his whole life. Hockey took Pomponio to Massachusetts, wherein he attended Merrimack College on a full-ride scholarship to play Division One ice hockey. After graduating with his degree in Communications, Nick took off to Europe to play professional hockey for several years. Knowing he could not play hockey forever, Pomponio decided to head back to the states and go to law school, graduating from Whittier Law School in Costa Mesa, California, in 2012. “The journey that has taken me to where I am today is not your typical journey, but I think the path I have taken has helped set me up for success as an attorney,” he said.
“I thoroughly enjoy my job and assisting so many individuals in their time of need. The thrill of victory I get when I settle a case for a client brings back some memories of when I was playing. The personal injury world is an exciting environment and an energizing experience,” he said. Not only is Pomponio known amongst the legal community and his clients as being able to resolve cases very quickly, but also for getting the maximum amount possible.
He says, “I’m not saying I’m smarter than any other attorney or a magician for that matter. I get the great results that I do because I am putting in the work that many others don’t. While working six or seven days at times may seem daunting, I am more than happy to go that extra mile for my clients.” In 2018, he opened his law firm, Pomponio Injury Law, to focus on providing the highest level of customer service to all of his clients, believing that each client is not a number, but
rather a part of the family. “I handle every aspect of the client’s representation, from the initial consultation through settlement. When it comes to representing my clients, I am a very aggressive individual. I go out and get what I want for my clients. A lot of hard work goes into that,” he said. When this workaholic is not at the office, you still might find him on the ice. “I still try and play hockey once a week. I sponsor an adult league team at City National Arena here in Las Vegas. I also enjoy going out to dinner, hanging out with friends, and traveling from time to time,” he said. Pomponio’s hard work and dedication are paying off. He is currently working on expanding his practice in Las Vegas and opening a second office in Newport Beach, California in the new year as he also holds a license to practice law in California. – By Ashlee DeMartino

SUCCESS IS HARDCORE FOR LARRY NOLAN —By Ashlee DeMartino From rock bottom to triumph, at 36, Larry Nolan’s life reads like a Hollywood movie script whose success has landed him with mentions on Forbes and Inc. 5000. Born and raised in Southern California, Nolan moved to Antelope Valley when he was in high school. “When I was young, I was super by the book, and I wanted to be a police officer. So I was the last one anyone would think would get in trouble. But when we moved to the valley, my family was really poor, I had to wear my mom’s shoes to school,” said Larry Nolan. By the time Nolan was sixteen, he had moved out and lived on his own. Couch surfing from one friend’s place to another, taking the city bus to school and work. ”I was working at a local gym, and I was super into fitness, nutrition, and personal training. It got to the point where I dropped out of school because I couldn’t do work and school, and I just got tired of being broke.” He said. That is when Nolan started getting in trouble with the law.” I was outside of a Del Taco with a group of guys that said they were going to go steal stuff; I had never stolen anything in my life, but I got in the car with them and ended up breaking into a police officer’s home. It was bad; we got caught,” he said. Facing a one-year prison sentence and convicted of two felonies, Nolan knew things had to change. “I was one crime away from potentially spending my life in prison. I had no education; it was a wake-up call for me. I was in jail and decided when I got out this would not happen again; I decided to pursue and do something great,” he said. When released, he got a
84 | Deluxe Version Magazine
job working in the food industry, but that wasn’t his passion. “I stepped away from that and went back into fitness,” he said. In 2006 with only two clients, his girlfriend (now his wife) and his mom, Nolan started Hardcore Fitness. “ Back then, there weren’t a lot of ‘boot camp’ style fitness centers. I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I grabbed a pink laundry basket with some dumbbells and headed to the park and started training my wife and mom”, He said. From there, it was one client at a time. After years of being in the park, the program finally grew to a small 1,800 square foot indoor facility and is now in an 11,000 square foot facility in Santa Clarita.
“Since 2007 we’ve seen huge growth, we have 27 franchise locations across the US from California to Las Vegas, Texas, and Florida. We have a few more franchises set to open in Florida soon”, he said. When it comes to the future, Nolan says the skies the limit. “This has never been about how much money I can make. It has always been about our clients and helping them achieve their fitness and nutrition goals. I want to create technologies, systems, and equipment that completely changes the group fitness space and require other people to do the same. We also have several equipment and technologies that are patent pending. This will take group and personal fitness to a whole new level”, he said. What advice would Nolan give to others who are struggling to find their way? “It’s okay that you don’t have it all figured out. The people that you’re looking up to you don’t either. You have to have faith in yourself that you’re going to be willing to do the work to figure it out. If you truly want it bad enough, remind yourself every day that it’s probably going to require a lot of you, and the reason why other people aren’t there is that they just weren’t willing to put in the work. As long as you have faith in yourself, you will accomplish your dream,” he said.
HARNESS YOUR INNER ENTREPRENEUR
– By Michael DeLucca much life they were missing from inside their cubicle walls. This eye-opening experience has caused many people to feel uneasy with simply going back to the “old normal.” If this scenario speaks to you, or you have found yourself in a similar position, it’s time to start living a life by design.
Here is your quarterly dose of teachings, preachings and
unsolicited advice. For many Americans, the very thought of the world’s largest economy shutting down was an impossible feat, yet brick and mortar shops, and office buildings alike were all mandated to close if they were not deemed “essential.” Those so-called safe 9-5 jobs turned out to not be so safe after all, as millions were furloughed, laid off, or made redundant. Our country’s middle class instantaneously shrunk overnight forcing many skilled employees to file unemployment for the first time in their lives.
While the market contracted for these traditional business models, it exploded for those who embraced online technology. By being forced to quarantine and separate from one another, we found better ways to remain connected, which, in turn, opened up the opportunity of remote work to many. Being given a reprieve from these traditional office positions allowed millions of Americans to realize just how
The smart money is always on investing in yourself. What are you passionate about? Do you have a business idea that’s been just out of reach, in the back of your mind, for the past decade? It’s time to avoid analysis paralysis, and create small daily executable goals. Do all the little things. As I tell my clients, “Do all the Do’s and none of the Don’ts.“ According to Nasdaq, by the year 2040, it’s estimated that 95% of all purchases will be through eCommerce. The online market is rapidly expanding, and it is time that you harness your inner entrepreneur to carve out a piece. Check back next issue, where we will be diving deeper into how to launch your newly formed start-up. DINING REDEFINED:
3RD BASE LA
– By Danica Stockton Shyon Keoppel, co-owner of 3rd Base LA Restaurant, gives us insight on the evolution of dining during the pandemic. Keoppel describes the restaurant prior to Covid-19 as, “operating at full capacity and doing really well! Each month was record-breaking.” Even though 3rd Base LA had only been open for approximately three or four months prior to shutdowns, the restaurant was exceeding its projections by a landslide. The business was bustling. The shutdowns broke the momentum of business as restaurants were continuously required to shut down, then given the option to re-open, and required to shut down again. With state and federal guidelines changing dayto-day, a real challenge presented itself to the hospitality and dining industries. Keoppel expresses the difficulty of operating under such circumstances. “[When we close], we have to throw away all of the food. [When re-opening], we have to reorder food and rehire staff.” In order to satisfy requirements imposed on dining establishments, Keoppel expresses that 3rd Base LA “obtained more parking spaces outside and made them into a patio” seating area. The atmosphere of the establishment was geared more towards the nightlife, bottle service, and sports bar demographic. Keoppel describes 3rd Base LA as “more of a party with solid food quality [prior to the pandemic]. Now we have a calmer atmosphere focused on [upscale] food and cocktails.” 3rd Base LA has made several changes to its operations in order to accommodate staff and patrons while keeping them safe. Keoppel explains, “With all the guidelines, [our] staff has to wear face masks and face shields. We have to sanitize the building daily to keep patrons and staff safe.” He says of 3rd Base LA employees, “they have adapted pretty quick. People need jobs and our staff is happy with what we are working with, especially with the new patio seating.” Many former dining patrons have been dining only at home due to the pandemic. Co-owner, Shyon Keoppel encourages them, “to get out and to look for restaurant operators that are following guidelines for social distancing, sanitizing, and mask requirements. If they don’t see that, try a different place that is abiding by the guidelines. Help the economy by giving establishments that are following requirements a chance.” To learn more, you can visit 3rd Base LA in person, located off of Cahuenga Blvd and Selma Ave. You can also visit their website, 3rdbasela.com, and their Instagram, @3rdbasela.

THE FEMALE FACE OF CANNABIS IN THE U.S. – By Dayna Roselli Priscilla Vilchis knew she had big shoes to fill once given that title, but she’s proud and confident she can help educate the public about the benefits of marijuana. Vilchis is the CEO and CMO of Premium Produce. She is the youngest and first-ever minority female CEO to be awarded licenses to cultivate and produce medical and recreational cannabis in Nevada. Vilchis says, “we have come a long way. The quarantine brought one good thing, the Governor deemed marijuana essential, along with hospitals, it is finally acknowledged. Hopefully, sooner rather than later, it will be federally legal.”
The current situation with COVID-19 has many people suffering from anxiety and lack of sleep. Vilchis says there has been a big boom in the industry because of this, “people realize they can take an edible and have a good night’s sleep. It’s making a huge difference.” Vilchis started her journey when she worked in the healthcare industry. She saw first hand, the opioid epidemic, and wanted to make a difference. Seeing how people taking pain medication would return with an addiction caught her attention. She says, “it was a big eye-opener, I tried to find an
alternative, I read about marijuana, and I jumped on it, fast forward, and now I’m a genius! (she laughs) Everyone thought I was crazy.” The industry continues to grow. Vilchis built Premium Produce from the ground up, and the company is proud to be launching her own “Queen of the Desert” cannabis brand. She’s also known as the Hollyweed Queen on her social media sites with more than 86,000 followers on Instagram alone, “I say listen, the science and research is out there, we all have access to the internet, individuals need to read up. There are so many benefits for high blood pressure, inflammation, kids with epilepsy. CBD relieves the pain and helps us heal quicker post-surgery too.” Community outreach is vital to Vilchis. She wants to educate people who think marijuana is a gateway drug, and show them the research and benefits. She wants to shed the outdated stigma surrounding cannabis and inspire young professionals to pursue their dreams in the groundbreaking industry. The “Hollyweed Queen” quotes in one of her latest Instagram posts, “Self-belief and hard work will always earn you success.” Pricilla Vilchis is living proof of that. She says she will keep moving forward to make an impact and help as many people as she can. Her work isn’t done yet. Follow Priscilla on Instagram: @hollyweedqueen

‘WRITE’ NOW: FINDING PEACE IN A PANDEMIC WITH A PLAN, A PEN AND MY PALATE.
– ByStacey Gualandi There was nothing more relaxing and soul-replenishing than my recent road trip to the heart of California’s wine country—from the palate-pleasing pinot of Paso Robles to the breathtaking beaches of Carmel-by-the-Sea—but the much-needed escape from reality almost didn’t happen. I’d never been that person to second-guess a decision to hit the road; but with this trip, I came thiiiiis close to canceling. Because, 2020. As most people have experienced in one way or another, maintaining normalcy in the age of COVID-19 is no easy feat. Under typical circumstances, a summer getaway along the Golden State’s Central Coast would’ve been a no-brainer. (Not to mention, this opportunity would have me tagging along with food, wine and travel journalists Elaine and Scott Harris of Cuisineist.com, a top-100 travel website featuring hundreds of articles and videos from the husband-and-wife sommelier’s globetrotting adventures.) But with a legitimate concern over catching coronavirus, our safety and well-being were of utmost importance. Luckily, at the time, California had just prohibited indoor dining in counties we would be visiting (which would automatically ensure we’d be eating outdoors at all times) and before and upon our arrival, our innkeepers guaranteed a strict pandemic protocol during our stay. Taking those facts into consideration, we stocked up on masks and sanitizer; memorized social distancing guidelines; and ultimately decided to clear out (in separate cars) to California. Uncertain times call for uncertain measures, but looking back, I am so grateful I did.
HOW TO DINE With a wide range of dining choices in and around Paso Robles’ downtown square, we started the gastronomic portion of our getaway on the elegant back patio of Thomas Hill Organics, deemed one of the city’s best restaurants. This farm-to-table concept is dedicated to organic, locally sourced food options and unique Central Coast wines. Lucky for us, we washed down our sea bass and vegetarian Buddha Bowl with a superb 2011 Tudor Wines Pinot Noir, hand delivered by Dan Tudor himself. (Thank you, Dan!) In keeping with the COVID-conscious theme, we ate on the patio of Cello Ristorante & Bar at Allegretto Vineyard Resort by Ayres, a 5-year-old hotel resort/spa that has added a refined element to Paso’s profile. The Mediterranean-inspired restaurant offers a Northern Italian menu by Chef de Cuisine Benjamin Drahos. The upscale yet casual feel made us feel right at home while devouring spring pea pasta, pan-seared salmon and Allegretto’s own home-grown rosé. To cap off the exceptional meal, we took a beautiful stroll through the manicured gardens, Tuscan architecture and art-lined hallways of the 20-acre estate. (I plan to return someday for the complete Allegretto experience!)
HOW TO WINE The minute (actually, the second) we arrived in Paso Robles, our first stop was atop DAOU Mountain, a gorgeous winery famous for its exquisite cabernet sauvignon. Sitting 2,200 feet above the city and overlooking the entire Adelaida District, the tasting room was closed due to COVID, but with a view that extraordinary, there was no better way to experience DAOU than outside. This property is widely considered Paso Robles’ “birthplace of modern winemaking.” Now, proprietors—and brothers—Daniel and Georges Daou continue to challenge themselves to produce a Bordeaux-style cabernet they say will “rival the greatest.” They are succeeding; and, their culinary choices were perfectly paired (do not leave the mountaintop before trying the Vegan Fregula and Onyx Mezze)! Trust me. Hands-down, DAOU is a two-fold tasting adventure. From the mountain to the vineyard, Onx Wines offered our foursome a wine flight-filled adventure…on foot (with a little help from a Kawasaki “mule!”). A blend of adventure with timehonored winemaking tradition is at the heart of the Olson family’s cuvée blends at Onx, a 127-acre estate property located in the shotgun of the Templeton Gap, and home to complex soils, vast views, perfect wine growing temperatures, and outdoor tasting areas! Our tasting visit began in the open-air “tractor shed” and continued to five beautiful “Oases” found throughout the vineyard, an option perfectly suited to the new normal of six-feet-separation.
Once in Carmel, we opted for alternative fare just off the beaten path. If you have a fondness for fondue like us, it’s “hip to dip” at Lugano Swiss Bistro, an authentic eatery that serves up Switzerland, with a side of France and Germany. Seated outside in the biergarten, we satisfied our fondue fix with cheese and, of course, Swiss chocolate. But I won’t soon forget my first experience with a Swiss puff pastry pastetli (all mushrooms!), and an order of original Swiss Raclette cheese. Yodel-ay-hee-hoo. Proscht! Looking for casual cuisine on our last night in Cali, we ventured out to nearby Monterey for a halcyon happy hour—and history lesson—at popular steakhouse Tarpy’s Roadhouse, one-third of the area’s well-known trio of hot spots including Montrio Bistro and Rio Grill. The rustic stone building and courtyard was built in 1917 on three-plus acres, and thanks to an exclusive tour from new owners Ken and Mona Donkersloot (who took over the restaurant group during the pandemic), we learned about the beautiful property and Matt Tarpy, the celebrated vigilante for whom the restaurant got its name. It was perfectly picturesque and an enlightening end to our culinary roundup.
HOW TO RECLINE The suites at La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Paso Robles were luxurious yet affordable and well-suited as “headquarters” for our two-night stay.
Jeff Strekas, the director of operations and winegrowing, also showed us the vineyard’s innovative way of drinking-while-social distancing called “Onx-at-Home.” Tasters can now enjoy Onx wines in fun-sized vials either on location, or via its Private Virtual Tasting Experience. Needless to say, he had me at fun-sized—but I left with two full-sized (Indie Rosé, my favorite!). Paso Robles is definitely “where wine takes you” and I can’t wait to return.
The newly redesigned property is right off Route 46, just minutes from downtown, the wineries and Highway 101. Our timing was impeccable, too, because La Quinta is just four minutes from the art installation Bruce Munro: Field of Light at Sensorio, a 15-acre, solar-powered exhibition of 58,800 stemmed fiber-optic spheres that gently illuminate the landscape. With limited attendance allowed and safety measures installed, this was just the kind of outdoor attraction for social distancing purposes in the age of COVID-19. It has been extended through June 2021, and it is not to be missed.
Our al fresco tasting tour continued up the Pacific coast to Carmel-By-the-Sea, the second leg of the trip. We couldn’t pass up a chance to visit Dawn’s Dream Winery, home to Dawn Galante’s award-winning pinots and rosés (and, the most Instagrammable wine tub ever!). The married mom of five saw her dreams of making “approachable wines with exceptional quality” and giving back to her community come true. Her rosé was voted “Best of Monterey” 5 years running, and she has raised sizable donations for several non-profits supporting women and children.
Finally, there was no better way to enjoy Carmel-by-the-Sea than with a stay at the pretty-in-pink Hofsas House. Founded by the Theis family over seven decades ago, this Bavarian-inspired 38room charmer is within walking distance to everything the beautiful beachside village has to offer (especially the 5th Avenue Deli, where we stocked up on essentials for our hike at Point Lobos— easily the best hike I’ve ever done!) It’s a European retreat where the attention to your personal needs—and safety—can’t be beat. I already miss those Dutch doors.
Dawn’s husband, Jack Galante, and Otter Cove winemaker Richard Oh—both Carmel royalty— were our gracious hosts for the afternoon (one of many perks when you travel with experts!) The Galante family has a long history in the area: Jack’s great grandfather, J. Frank Devendorf, discovered Carmel Beach, and together with his partner Frank Powers, created the town of Carmel in 1902. Turns out our last stop was in the courtyard of Carmel’s first tasting room: Galante Vineyards and Western Emporium. Galante is synonymous with fine cabs, merlots, pinots and Sauvignon Blanc, and after a few (read: several) sips, I understand why they reign supreme. (Oh, if you missed the wine tub, be sure to check out the leather cowboy boot chair!)
