The Moor Pool Garden Suburb has been recognised by English Heritage as exceptional, being one of the best examples of a surviving garden suburb; it was designed following the principles of the Garden City Movement as an answer to cramped Victorian housing. Established by John Sutton Nettlefold, the Moor Pool Garden Suburb echoes the principles of the Cadbury family’s Bournville Estate - low density housing amongst green open spaces that centre on a community hall. His philosophy continues as today the Estate boasts two tennis clubs, a bowling green, allotments and appropriately, the pretty Moor Pool itself. The community hall has since been Grade II listed and is home to an acclaimed dramatic society and a unique wooden skittle alley dating back to 1913. Borne Valley borders the northern perimeter of Harborne on the Moor Pool Estate which, with its neighbour Edgbaston, are considered some of the most exclusive suburbs of Birmingham. The bustling city centre lies approx three miles or a 15 minute drive away but Harborne feels like a world apart. The local High Street offers a wide range of independent stores as well as an M&S Simply Food and Waitrose supermarket. There are plenty of opportunities for wining and dining, most notably at renowned restaurants Turners of Harborne and Simpsons in Edgbaston, both of which have been awarded a Michelin star.
