Occupational ocular injuries that hospitalized at rayong hospital Vicharn Chokruengsakul M. D. *

Abstract The purposes of this descriptive retrospective study were to study the epidemiology, severity classification and visual outcomes of occupational ocular injury treatment in patients hospitalized at Rayong Hospital. Medical records of the patients whom were diagnosed as occupational eye injury and admitted at Rayong Hospital between October I , zoo7 and September 30,2008were reviewed. There were 42 cases include in this study. Among 42 cases, 40 patients were male patients (95.24% ) and 2 patients were female (4.76 x ) . The range of age was between 1 7 - 59 years with mean age 35.5years.Ten patients were injuried by

blunt trauma, i o patients injuried by sharp objects, 2 patients injuried by chemical agent, and 20 patients

injuried by nails and polishing objects. Twenty patients had closed globe injury and 2 2 patients had open globe injury. The visual outcomes in closed globe injury were stablized in 9 patients and improved in whereas 12 patients were stabilized,

patients were improved and 2 patients got worses in open globe injury.

The average mean of hospital stay was 5.03 days. In conclusion : The hospitalized occupational eye injuries incurred significant visual loss, morbidity, health care expense and socioeconomic impacts. Safety strategies aimed at preventing eye injury are mandatory especially legal control.
