flowers are black roses, “They’re a lot different than most people’s favorite, and that’s why I like them so much.

Their unique but their still very beautiful.” Black roses, like crimson are a symbol of mourning and death.

ove dates back to the dawn of time, and what is the first thing that pops into your head when you think of romance? Flowers. Flower arrangements date back to ancient china, as early as 207 BCE. The art of gifting flowers goes deeper than just buying ones that look pretty for Valentine’s Day, a special event, or a birthday.

“My favorite flower has to be the Japanese Spider Lily, not many people have heard about them but their super unique looking, and very colorful.” says sophomore Kaden Thompson.

Japanese spider lilies are called “Manjushage” in Japan, which translates to flower of the heavens.

Flower symbols and meanings have deep history all throughout the world, with roots in Europe and Asia.

The symbolic aspect behind flowers can be found in Shakespeare plays, different mythologies and plays written by the ancient Greeks. There is a code for nearly every phrase out there, pink flowers for yes, tulips to declare love, sunflowers to represent purity and the heather flower as a sign of admiration.

Roosevelt Senior Regan Ore explains that her favorite flower is the lilac. “Even though the lilac is very simple and basic, that’s why I love them so much, you can find them almost anywhere and they’re so beautiful.” Lilacs, because they are one of the first flowers to bloom in the spring, symbolize renewal and confidence.

During the Victorian era, flower symbolism was extremely popular, according to the Farmer’s Almanac, in nearly all Victorian homes alongside their bible, were guidebooks for aiding in seeing different messages. Alongside different meanings for different flowers, the way they are gifted is significant as well. Handing a bouquet of flowers with the right hand can mean yes, and no with the gesture of the left hand.

ating violence is not something that just happens to teens, unfortunately dating violence and domestic abuse comes in many shapes and sizes, and can affect middle schoolers just as severely as it effects adult men and women.

The key factor in differentiating between younger victims and older victims is that teens and young adults rarely realize the relationship they are in is harmful, this is why raising awareness and creating easy access to tools and helplines is so important. These young adults are often scared and embarrassed and don’t know who or where to turn to and without the right resources, teens in violent situations might never escape the deep and dangerous hole they’ve fallen into.

According to youth.gov, “Youth ages 12 to 19 experience the highest rates of rape and sexual assault. Studies show that approximately 10% of adolescents report being the victim of physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner during the previous year.” There is plenty of debate on whether teen girls or teen boys are a greater percentage of the victims in these situations, and different studies say different things, but aggression can look a lot different in teen girls than what it looks like inteen boys. Boys are more likely to resort to punching and hitting and non consensual sexual acts which are overall more outwardly violent, whereas for girls, it is more common for smaller acts of violence to take place; pinching, slapping, and potentially verbal acts of violence.

In some circles these smaller acts of violence are seen as socially acceptable, things that turn boys into men and such. These tropes teach teenage boys to ignore the signs of dating violence and can butterfly effect into extremely dangerous circumstances.

The side affects of dating violence can expand past physical issues and dive well into mental side affects such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, severe self esteem issues and lasting traits that will damage the ability to trust in future relationships. Young girls who experienced dating violence are more likely to get pregnant then young girls who haven’t. Not only is the risk of teen pregnancy higher, but so is the threat of substance abuse and self harm. Survivors of these heartbreaking crimes can experience an urge to isolate themselves from

the violence these victims experience, they feel that leaving their abusers would be a betrayal. The abuse and injury can then cycle until authorities get involved or until the abuse becomes fatal.

Preventing dating violence isn’t just about catching the warning signs early, and making resources readily available, but it is also about catching the potential abuser before they can do any harm. Plenty of researchers have discovered that there are significant parallels between parenting style, and child behavior. Psychologists have been have been debating this topic sense the late 1800’s and these specialists argue that child development is one of the most important processes to exist.

They know when they aren’t trusted, when their in trouble, when they’ve done something that would upset their parents, or when the topic they want to discuss might not go over well. Biologically, all children want to do is please their parents, and when they feel confiding in their parents about the dating violence they are experiencing getting in trouble or being punished. Teens will recoil and keep what their going through to them selves. This is

We did not want to feel isolated, so we joined to connect with others, and it absolutely changed our high school experience for the better!”.

The Core program goal from the begging was to make the diverse students of Roosevelt feel safe to talk about any social injustices now the Core programs has branches in at Central Academy, Lincoln High School, North High School, Valley High School, Urbandale High School etc School and the program even has monthly statewide meetings where representatives from each school meet to plan collaborative events such as presentations

In mid-2019, Gill began posting pictures of his stock portfolio to a reddit forum known as WallStreetBets at this time he was still investing in GameStop, and other small companies many thoughts were going anywhere.

He also posted updates and other stock news, as well as predictions on to his YouTube channel, where he goes under the username RoaringKitty. His videos and pictures didn’t get much attention, with him investing more than 50k into GameStop at the time, many people didn’t take him seriously.

When WallStreetBets, as-well as Gill got ahold of this information, the forums erupted. People began discussing plans, and ways they could manipulate these hedge funds.

They decided that members who could, should buy as many GME (GameStop) stocks as possible. This would drive the prices up, causing all the hedge funds that bet against GameStop to louse massive amounts of money.

On January 20th, Biden was inaugurated in Washington DC and became the 46th President.

With the start to the term, Biden wasted no time in getting to work and taking executive action. Signing multiple executive orders in his first hours as President, Biden took swift, decisive action to build America up. At a time when many Americans were longing for less drama, more positive impacts for the future, and a President who would spend more time acting in America’s bests interests than golfing and tweeting, Biden has brought hope to America.

“I see the pandemic going in a much more positive way. It might be slow, but I think if it’s going to take all that money for his plan, I can see it getting better day by day.”

Jenesis Dotson senior here at Roosevelt had this to say about Biden’s plan for the pandemic.

The plan entails the manufacturing of Covid vaccinations for all Americans, which would be free and establishing new guidelines and funds for schools to help decrease the risks, productively adapt, and help with budget cuts.

It also includes ways to help reduce risks and begin to rebuild.

Junior Ivy Lawson believes, “I believe Black people deserve to be represented in a positive light in this country in every way possible. Harriet Tubman has had an even more positive influence on this country than many other old rich white people that are put on our bills. She and many other black leaders in the US deserve to be recognized for making change when it was almost impossible. The old white men on our dollar bills have been in the spotlight for too long.”

Since becoming President, Biden has decided to continue moving forward with removing Andrew Jackson from $20 bills and placing Harriet Tubman on them. This was supposed to happen in 2016 but was stalled due to Trump. Overall, the new beginning has seemingly had positive impacts and hopefully will continue this through the next 4 years.

When it comes to the topic of marijuana legalization, it seems that everyone has an opinion about it. Whether you stand for the legalization of Cannabis or not, most people find it an interesting subject. In honor of National Hemp Day which occurred February 4th, this article is meant to inform and educate about the misconceptions of hemp, CBD, and marijuana..

Due to prejudice against Mexican immigrants, and the stereotype that they loved getting high by smoking marijuana, the U.S. banned and criminalized the use of cannabis. there are more dangerous chemicals incorporated into the weed. A lot of the abuse with marijuana isn’t that it’s inherently bad for you, it’s mainly what you get, and how you use it.

Over the years, marijuana has been demonized. It’s just now the United States is allowing legalization in select states, but many think it should be legalized throughout the whole country.
