TEXTILE DESIGN 2023

TEXTILE DESIGN

BA (Hons) Textile Design at De Montfort University gives students the opportunity to work in distinct specialisms of knitted, mixed media, printed or woven textiles. This year our students have, yet again, excelled themselves in the production of wonderful collections of design work. They have explored many different themes and processes in depth, and this has been achieved through hard work and resilience over the last three years. The vast range of skills they have developed during their years of study will ensure that they will be able to navigate through their intended career path.

The students have already had the opportunity to showcase their talent to industry by competing in national and international competitions. They have also had the opportunity to work on live projects for Next, Royal Crown Derby, Habitat and Amtico. Designers from each of those companies were amazed by the quality of work created by the students.

We know that these students, like so many of our previous graduates, will go on to do amazing things in whichever path they choose to follow. We wish them all well.

“I specialise in creating intricate, highly detailed hand drawings using a range of materials and media. My preference is digital printing for wallpapers and fabrics because I can showcase the complexity of my designs and bring them to life by experimenting with colour palettes that express the mood I want to convey. I am intrigued by nature, and I enjoy exploring ideas and finding ways to incorporate this into my artwork. Ultimately, I am keen to build on both my technical and personal skills to excel in my future career as a Textile Designer.”

“As a designer who loves the world of fine art and textiles, my design work revolves around the reinvention of past art. Design elements such as colour and carefully constructed pattern play a huge part in my collections, which focus on enhancing interior spaces through contemporary design. The variation in my aesthetic, shows my ability to adapt as well as my wide range of skill. This is reinforced by working with a range of sustainably sourced yarns including silk and wool, hand dyeing and technical warp set ups - such as double cloth and single cloth structures.”

“Surface quality and distortion are at the center of my design practice. Within my process, minimalistic designs are transformed into new surfaces through exploring drawing styles and print combinations. Connecting digital and physical methods is important to link the past and the future of printed textile design. My final major project uses minimal colour contrast to create new material qualities from exploration with screen printing. Sustainability has influenced my project by looking at drawing solutions to reduce the amount of dye printed. Designing for high-end consumers shows consideration for product longevity, production needs and conceptual outcomes.”

“Pattern, texture, and colour from the natural world are the main source of inspiration for my work as a woven textile designer. This project, ‘Coast’, explores the connection between people and nature, more specifically coastal landscapes. I enjoy looking at how aspects of nature can be brought into interiors through calming colour and interesting woven structures. A positive colour palette of cool blues and neutral greens, balanced with warmer rusty, pink hues, brought directly from the natural world, creates a relaxing, yet optimistic collection. My collection is aimed at interiors with a focus on blankets for outdoor living spaces. Winning the DMU Roadley Award for supporting innovation in sustainability allowed me to source a range of different textured wool and tencel yarns to create a more sustainable collection.”

“As an ambitious woven textile designer, I have a strong eye for colour, pattern and scale which is something I developed throughout this collection. Influenced by the Italian inspired Welsh village, Portmeirion, I collected visual imagery of the colourful, graphic architecture located within the beautiful natural landscape. My collection explores the concept of enhancing interior spaces through the use of sustainable materials, including a range of wool and silk, which was supported by winning a DMU Roadley award. In order to emulate my vivid colour palette, I dyed most of my yarns, resulting in a colour cohesive collection which reflects Portmeirion Village.”

“‘Cosmos’ is a fashion collection inspired by years of watching sci-fi movies with my dad. After every movie, I’m left in awe of the extraordinary worlds they create, sparking the idea to develop worlds of my own. In an alternate universe humans inhabit four planets: Metropolis, Arcadia, Solaria and Okeanos. ‘Cosmos’ is divided into four sections, visualising what people on each of these planets would be wearing. From graphic geometrics to organic textures, this unique collection showcases the diversity of my design skills and inspirations. My curious and investigative approach to design encourages extensive exploration in the print room, allowing me to feed my passions for colour, pattern and texture into all of my designs.”

“Biomimicry is a design field that draws inspiration or materials from nature that can problem solve and create innovative solutions through the technical side of textiles. My work discusses how the high demand of fast fashion retailers has increased during the recent years and considers how biomimicry can be introduced into high street brands. Studying the rise of high street fashion and the importance of analysing the potential of biomimicry in fashion drove the research into sustainable textiles and environmentally friendly choices within textiles. Focusing on the comparison of durability of high street sportswear and bioinspired sportswear, accelerated laboratory skills in textiles testing.”

“‘Shifting Lights’ is a collection intended to boost people’s mood and wellbeing by introducing bright colours into home interiors. My passion for colour is the forefront of my design process, I take inspiration from the natural world as well as colour trend research to formulate colour palettes. I use yarn dyeing as a tool to convey mood throughout my designs, particularly ombre warp dyeing which creates flow in the weaves. My final major project allowed me to thoroughly explore my love of colour whilst giving me the opportunity to challenge myself technically and creatively.”

“My personal history is a mix of living in China, Mexico and England and this has given me an appreciation of, and openness to, new ideas from other cultures which have influenced my work. I have explored tessellation for my designs as it forms the basis for many traditional patterns from different cultures. Through my understanding of the rules of tessellation, I have then been able to experiment and make variations to form my own style. My outputs are geared towards interior design products, from wallpaper to curtains, cushions and bedding and I prefer working in a bright colour palette.”

“The industry debate regarding the sustainability and reliability of dyes has been a widely discussed topic. My dissertation investigates and compares natural and synthetic dyes touching on the importance of sustainability while producing quality samples that meet British standards. It not only explores the process of both methods but will investigate the trials and tribulations that come with being more sustainable as an industry, finding new ways to enhance not only dyes but the catalyst of new and everyday products.Through the use of colour fastness tests, elements of possible change were identified and further work recommendations were made, along with my own personal ideas that have been inspired by this investigation.”

“A mixed media textiles designer who is inspired by surface textures and structural elements. My work features surface manipulation techniques such as smocking and pleating, along with exploring colour through hand dyeing fabrics. I have a keen interest in combining various fabrics such as acrylic and leather, weaving them together to create a new piece of fabric to work onto. I have also enjoyed experimenting with the laser cutter during projects, which has enabled me to cut out various geometrics as well as cut into fabrics to incorporate a three-dimensional element. My work is designed for fashion and accessories, particularly contemporary streetwear with a youthful market in mind.”

“As a woven textile designer, I am interested in creating collections that brighten and bring comfort into interior spaces, achieved through confident use of colour, geometrics, and variety of yarns for their textural qualities. I enjoy problem solving and am driven by technical challenges created by combining weave with other processes. These experiments have led to investigations into ombre warp dyeing, as well as the more technical challenge of screen-printing onto warps, and combining this with a double cloth block draft. The aim of my collections is to create versatile and transitional textiles, to increase their longevity.”

“After spending the covid lockdowns being unable to escape the busy bustling life of a health care worker in a big city I turned to plants to find some part of the nature that I craved. My project explores the link between nature and wellness. My passion for colour played a part in this project as I explore colour therapy which has a strong link to mental and physical wellness. I use tropical plants as inspiration as I want to create a feel of a tropical oasis. I love to work digitally. I use this skill throughout my project to create a collection of wallpapers that make whatever room they are in feel like a tropical paradise.”
