CASE STUDY
Marco Marin Design Management and Entrepreneurship MA
“I always knew I wanted to study for a masters after graduating from my undergraduate degree in 2018. I knew Design Management and Entrepreneurship was the course for me as it amalgamated my foundation of design knowledge from my first degree with the application of such design principles that can be used within the context of a business. This course showed me a practical way of using design as a strategic business tool.
was filled with people so different to me, it was a great experience to learn from as an individual and as a designer.
My favourite part of the course was the live brief. Collaborating with Sainsbury’s on a live project was the most exciting and interesting aspect of my course. Liaising with design professionals on a live project was an excellent way for me to develop my networking skills with industry professionals. Overall, it was amazing. There are some really high-quality lecturers who don’t just teach, they go above and beyond by ensuring you as an individual are on task, happy and doing well. The study facilities at DMU are amazing, they are modern, clean, spacious, well-designed with the purpose of the space in mind. The space specifically dedicated to my course was also very nice, open and welcomed collaboration with other designers. A real highlight of studying at DMU was meeting so many people from so many different backgrounds and cultures. My course
Since graduating, I am looking to go into UX design. This is exciting for me as DMU has allowed me to prepare for this direction within the flexible modules and projects I undertook. I am excited as this is the type of role that I am most passionate about! However, most of all, the impact my role will have on other people excites me the most. Being able to have a positive and significant impact on people is why I started design, and UX design will allow me to do just that. DMU allowed me to dictate my own future by allowing me to flexibly choose the direction of each module based on my passions and aspirations after graduating. Also, the lecturers were very approachable. At times when a portfolio review was necessary for a job application, or even preparing for an interview, they were there for me.”

Dan received a commendation for his innovative ideas to improve pedestrian crossings in the international RSA Student Design Awards 2020. He has also launched his own business called Dimensional Designs where he uses a 3D printer to make and sell a range of items. “Product design seemed like a natural progression for me as I was always making things. It’s a proud moment and feels very rewarding thinking back to where I’ve come from and what I’ve achieved. I’ve been co-running Dimensional Designs for two years now and it’s been a great way to make an income and develop my skills at the same time. I’ve also learnt how to take my business to the next level and I’m currently assessing ways to enhance it thanks to the business modules available on my course. Being able to work and gain academic experience while studying at DMU has been brilliant. My aim is to build a career where I can divide my time between teaching and running my own business. DMU has been great – it’s a very inclusive place and you’re encouraged to do well. My tutors knew what direction I wanted to go in and gave me lots of relevant opportunities. I’m going to miss it, but not for long hopefully, as I’m thinking of coming back to do a PhD.” Dan Sawford, Product Design MA graduate
