WELCOME TO THE
ART & DESIGN DEGREE SHOW/17 I am delighted that you have joined us for our Art & Design Degree Show. We are very proud to celebrate the inspiring and innovative work of our final year students and to showcase the exciting creations of the next generation of artists and designers from our architecture, art, design and fashion undergraduate courses.
This year the Art & Design Degree show will take place in the new state-of-the-art Vijay Patel Building, the centrepiece of DMU’s £136 million campus transformation. This new art and design facility shows how serious we are about giving our students the very best experience and to provide them with the tools to achieve their aspirations. At DMU the Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities brings together award-winning student work, worldleading research and the innovative thinking of our many creative disciplines. As an acknowledged leader in creative education, we work tirelessly to give our students a rich and rewarding experience. Our strong industry links, placements, lectures by industry professionals and opportunities to work on live commercial briefs all equip them to realise their full potential and enter the workplace ready to make a valuable contribution from the start. Our graduates go on to work for high-profile brands such as the BBC, Mothercare, Abercrombie & Fitch, Dyson, BMW, Next and Adidas. We were delighted that our expertise in preparing our students for the workplace was recognised by the 2016 British Industrial Design Association (BIDA) survey which voted our Design Products programmes joint third in the UK for producing the most employable graduates. Each year we celebrate many student successes. This year has included Fashion Design student Katrina Zdanovska who was one of just 20 finalists in the 2017 Fashion Awareness Direct competition whose designs
earned her a place on the catwalk at London Fashion Week. Product and Furniture Design graduate Agnete Linikaite has seen her range of street furniture go into production after winning a competition with leading hard landscaping manufacturer Marshalls, and Contour Fashion graduate Elissa Grainger beat off over 600 brands to win a prestigious ASOS competition with a £50,000 prize with her trademark latex lace designs, which combine the two fabrics in a unique aesthetic. The Leicester School of Architecture received another accolade this year by achieving unconditional revalidation for a further five-years from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). This accreditation by the leading professional body is the gold standard worldwide and demonstrates how closely our teaching is aligned to the needs of the profession. And lastly we re-launched the Leicester School of Art. Originally founded in 1870 the school was the first element of what, more than 120 years later, became De Montfort University. Today the school offers our students an unrivalled environment to explore the full spectrum of visual arts, from traditional processes to cutting-edge digital media. I hope you enjoy the show.

THE VIJAY PATEL BUILDING DMU’s new Vijay Patel Building brings all of our art and design courses together into a beautiful, striking building filled with light. It has been designed to provide the space and facilities where ideas can develop and flourish. The creative industries depend on cross-disciplinary, collaborative teams to provide the imagination that results in new ideas and products and drive success. With that in mind, we have created a building that reveals the wonderful array of different practices and techniques housed within it and offers opportunities for students and staff to gather and work together in many different ways.
